Thanks to a camera output the recorder's stereo signal can be recorded also on the camera to ease subsequent editing of the material in combination with the slate tone function of the recorder. The two omnidirectional microphones allow you to easily record natural stereo sound with just this unit. Used together with small shotgun mics, you can even record audio from people speaking in an interview and the ambient sound at the same time (on different tracks), for example, with a compact set up.

The four-channel design enables use of two shotgun mics and the stereo mic to record ambiance and each speaker individually. Since channels 1 and 2 can be set to the stereo input and channels 3 and 4 can be set to the built-in mic, a large variety of microphone setups is possible: MONO/DUAL MONO mode - This is best for recording the audio of a single performer. STEREO/DUAL STEREO mode - This is best for recording with the built-in microphone or a stereo mic. 2MIX/DUAL 2MIX mode - This creates stereo files of the signals of multiple inputs that have been mixed.

The mixer can take a total of 4 channels from among the four XLR inputs that support phantom power, the stereo mini-jack input and the built-in stereo mic. In addition to enable pan and level adjustments, this unit also offers a limiter, a five-setting low-cut filter and a delay that can compensate for distances between mics. Moreover, a mid-side decoding function allows the use of two microphones in mid-side configuration.

Mic preamps, which receive and amplify microphone input signals, have a large impact on the quality of the recorded audio material. The DR-70D uses Tascam original HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) microphone preamps that we created through careful selection of parts. For example, we chose the NE5532 for the operational amplifier, which has a strong effect on audio quality. With a mic amp circuit that uses discrete architecture comprised of meticulously-chosen parts, we have achieved an equivalent input noise of -120 dBu.

The A/D converter that converts analogue signals to digital is made by Cirrus Logic and is equivalent to those used in our successful DR series of linear PCM recorders. Recording at resolutions up to 96 kHz/24 bit is supported.

The designer of the DR-70D focused on making the unit small so that it does not interfere with camera-work when it is attached to a camera support system or stabilizer. The unit has tripod screw threads on the bottom side and a removable camera attachment screw on its top. When capturing video using changeable auto-focus lenses, the sounds produced from the lens itself can disrupt and interfere with recordings. In situations where this noise is a problem, you can reduce the interruptions by using the included noise isolation arm. The noise isolation arm physically increases the distance from the noise source to reduce its capture. The structure of the arm, including its length and height, was developed through extensive testing.

The unit includes an on-board low-cut filter to cut out low-frequency background noise. Depending on the video recording scenario, you can choose to turn this feature on or off (LOW CUT/FLAT).

When filming outdoors, even a slight breeze can enter the mic and cause wind noise. This unit comes with a furry windscreen that can physically prevent this noise from occurring. Wind noise can be reduced by simply covering the mic unit with this windscreen.

The TM-60 offers a wide frequency response for precise and smooth reproduction of virtually any sound source from vocals to instruments. Its unidirectional pattern can suppress sounds from the sides and rear, helping to bring out the intended source.

The TM-60 is a condenser microphone opposed to dynamic microphones which are usually being used in live performances. Unlike dynamic mics, a condenser mic does not need a relatively heavy magnet and voice coil to convert acoustic waves into electrical signals. Instead, it uses a diaphragm coupled to an electrical condenser where vibrations are converted to changes in capacitance, realising a lightweight structure that helps to create a wider and smoother frequency response. To derive a signal from the changes in capacitance, electrical power is required.

The figure shows the construction of typical condenser microphones. The TM-60 is a back electret condenser microphone, which has a slightly different structure, but no specific difference is in the features.

Condenser microphones are largely divided into two categories according to the size of diaphragm. Large-diaphragm mics are more expensive and have a higher SPL capability, while small-diaphragm types are more robust, sound very good on low and high frequencies and have less colouration.

The TM-60's frequency response is typical for a small-diaphragm mic with a smoothly increased high end that allows anybody to get a clear, crisp sound.

Tascam TM-60 The polar pattern of a microphone shows how well the mic picks up the sound from different directions (directivity). The TM-60 has a unidirectional, or cardioid, pattern. This type of directivity is ideal for vocals and other single sound sources because it mainly picks up the sound from the front and reduces sounds from the sides and rear. This pattern also helps to avoid feedback when used in the vicinity of loudspeakers.

Standard condenser microphones require external phantom power for their operation. If such phantom power of 24 volts or 48 volts is supplied by the recorder, its battery runs out quickly.

The TM-60 is operated by a single AA battery inserted in the microphone, so the recorder does not have to supply phantom power and the microphone does not draw on the recorder's battery. To extend battery life, you can switch the microphone off when not used.

But instead of judging the design merely by test measurments, key components were selected following extensive listening tests.

Eight XLR mic inputs and eight TRS inputs can be used simultaneously for 16-track live recordings. Capture every detail of live performances or rehearsals for later mixdown.

The eight XLR mic inputs have switchable +48V phantom power to use up to 8 condenser mics at the same time. The two front panel TRS line inputs are switchable between instrument level and line level input with adjustable gain. An additional six TRS line ins on the rear of the unit are switchable between -10dB and +4dB. All of the jacks support balanced or unbalanced 1/4" signals.

Digital processing features like the DSP Monitor Mixer and advanced USB drivers make sessions with the US-16x08 comfortable for the musicians and engineer. The DSP Mixer includes processing for a polished-sounding headphone mix without latency delay from your DAW software, fueled by a Blackfin DSP processor.
