The Rhythm EP Part 2
The Rhythm EP Part 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RVR 03. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Don’t Go (5:39)
  2. Don’t Go (Ease Up George Flip) (5:12)
  3. U Want Wot? (5:38)
  4. Who Knows (VIP mix) (4:33)
Review: Rhythm Vibe keep the old-skool garage house flavour alive and well on this absolutely essential drop from Herb Rhythm, riding the kind of uptempo 4x4 flex that joins the dots between the scene's house roots and the speed garage that came after. The A side kicks off with the impeccable 'Don't Go', which rides the same vocal sample as FCL's deep house burner 'Lets Go' from 2010. Ease Up George gets busy on a remix of the track which injects some classy dubby shimmers and 2-step flex into the scenario, and it really works. 'U Want Wot?' is another tight and bumping joint with rich chords and oodles of soul, while 'Who Knows (VIP Mix)' gets things swinging good and proper without getting losing the smoother vibe that hangs over the whole EP.

Groovin' EP
Groovin' EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RNV 05. Rel: 14 Sep 20
  1. Groovin' (4:59)
  2. Not Because Of You (4:34)
  3. Teedra (6:37)
Review: Highrise continues to pile on the pressure through his breakout year in the buoyant UK garage scene, following up crucial spots on Plastik People and Shuffle 'n' Swing with more of that immaculately rendered 2-step tackle to get you shaking uncontrollably. 'Groovin' is steeped in soul and vibe, while 'Not Because Of You' gets even craftier with its organ chops and vocal slices. 'Teedra' on the B-side follows suit, displaying a razor sharp instinct for the funkiest slithers of sound to get bouncing around that deadly swing. If you need proof there's plenty of fresh garage being made these days, then cop yourself one of these before they're all snapped up.

Practical Rhythms Vol 2
Cat: PRHYTHMS 002. Rel: 08 Sep 20
  1. Highrise - "Feedback" (4:29)
  2. Highrise - "Feedback" (Sly remix) (5:25)
  3. Bailey Ibbs - "Talk To Me" (5:38)
  4. Bailey Ibbs - "Talk 2 Me" (Soul Mass Transit System remix) (4:51)
Review: The ongoing re-emergence of garage continues apace in 2020, despite the fact that none of us are actually able to knock out shapes in a club. Practical Rhythms builds on the success of its first release with another split, this time introducing High-rise on the a-side. 'Feedback' is a bumpy ride with 98-style 2-step and lush vocals that Sly then flips into something more down and dirty. Bailey Ibbs opens up the reverse with the more minimal and skeletal 'Talk To Me' with its glitchy sound and sub warmth. Soul Mass Transit System remix with a more bliss out and soulful late night house vibe, but at high speed and to great effect.

Want You Back
Want You Back (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PPLTD 04. Rel: 22 Jun 20
  1. Want You Back (Highrise mix)
  2. Want You Back (Marc Cotterell mix)
Review: Hold tight for more absolutely essential garage fodder from the Plastik People camp. This sharp and snappy two-tracker kicks off with Highrise, aka Darlington-based producer Dinn Warde who's been making increasingly large splashes with his jungle productions as Dwarde and more recently his on-point garage productions. His mix of "Want You Back" is a tightly wound, bumping slice of 4x4 with cool and deadly organ stabs. By contrast, label boss Marc Cotterell brings a more outwardly soulful flavour to his original version, leaning on uplifting chord sequences and putting the vocal front and centre. Depending on the mood you're looking to set, this record has you covered in two distinct and supremely classy ways.

INSTINCT 09
INSTINCT 09 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: INSTINCT 09. Rel: 17 Feb 20
  1. Turn Up (feat Logan) (6:03)
  2. Evanition (5:31)
  3. Echo Tone (4:33)
  4. Out Of Town Foes (4:21)
Review: The Instinct label continues to champion contemporary garage, this time welcoming Holloway to drop four sure shots guaranteed to go down a storm whether you're at a minimal night or a main stage festival rave up. Logan is spitting deft bars over "Turn Up", a crisp and cool stepper laced with smooth chords. "Evanition" juggles different energies from the mellow to the nasty with a classy touch, while "Echo Tone" gets a little more melodic flex into the mix. "Out Of Town Foes" maintains the soulful mood, while keeping the synth lines snappy and slick for those who prefer a little quirkiness in their club tunage.

Some Bad Days EP (reissue)
Some Bad Days EP (reissue) (limited splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: TIN 003. Rel: 14 Aug 20
  1. Hold U Close (4:25)
  2. Bad Days (5:13)
  3. Homage To Claro (5:13)
  4. MFCC (5:21)
Review: In case the first couple of releases passed you by, Timeisnow is a new UK garage focused sub-label from Bristol-based house stable Shall Not Fade. This is the imprint's third 12" and showcases cuts from London-based rising star Holloway, whose previous outings include contributions to split EPs from another West Country label, the under-fire Dr Banana. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the two-step brilliance of opener "Hold U Close" - all sweet, seductive female lead vocals, Armand Van Helden "dark garage" sub-bass and jazzy musical flourishes - to the breakbeat garage heaviness of "MFCC", which reminded us of Zed Bias' earliest work as Maddslinky on Sirkus. Elsewhere, "Homage To Claro" is a bouncy broken beat affair, while "Bad Days" explores the moodier end of the two-step spectrum.

Time Is Now Allstars Vol 1
  1. Interplanetary Criminal - "Crazy (Manchester Crew)" (4:17)
  2. Soul Mass Transit System - "Someone" (5:47)
  3. Holloway - "Wisemen" (4:47)
  4. Mainphase - "Mercy" (5:15)
  5. Ollie Rant - "Uptown" (4:28)
  6. Wilfy D - "Good Day" (6:29)
Review: Increasingly vital garage label Time Is Now keeps on kicking with this superb various artist six tracker. It recalls close associates like Holloway and Interplanetary Criminal as wells enlisting new names. All shades and sodas are covered here with face mangling jams like 'Mercy' covering the darker end of the spectrum and more sweet and fluid jams like 'Uptown' from Ollie Rant bringing plenty of soul, and a healthy dose of sax. Vocal pumpers from Soul Mass Transit and dubbed out minimalism from Holloway complete this most crucial of cuts.

INSTINCT 10
INSTINCT 10 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: INSTINCT 10. Rel: 04 May 20
  1. Pinder - "Forever" (5:30)
  2. 0113 - "Hard Lines" (5:46)
  3. Zac Stanton - "Stop Tellin Me" (6:13)
  4. Holloway - "Places To Be" (6:09)
Review: The campaign for real, modern UKG continues unabated over at Instinct, as another crew of like-minded bassbin botherers step up with their own fresh takes on the 2-step sound. Pinder is super speedy and tight as you like with "Forever", while Instinct regular 0113 gets freaky with the subtly tripped out "Hard Lines". Zac Stanton is perhaps the stand out turn on this 12" with the absolutely surefooted and sharply soulful "Stop Tellin Me". Holloway comes in strong on the B2 though, channeling that impeccable Ghost sound for the stripped and spooky "Places To Be". Classy club gear throughout, but especially on that B side.
