Take Me Up
Take Me Up (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIVID 03. Rel: 21 Sep 20
  1. Take Me Up (6:16)
  2. Heads Up (6:30)
  3. What I Need (6:02)
  4. Turn Out (6:00)
Review: We all taking up right about now and Yosh is the one to do it. Four crucial cuts flexing around the UKG/breaks axis, all heavily entrenched in the turn of the century breakbeat, dark garage melting pot. Classic vocal samples galore and really punchy drums, highlights include the classic "What I Need" and the pure kick drum militancy of on the title track "Take Me Up". Serious vibes for all ages and all floors.

Still Life Remixes (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Can't Run Away From Yourself (Holloway remix) (5:27)
  2. Can't Run Away From Yourself (Holloway dub) (5:24)
  3. Badman (0113 remix) (5:47)
  4. Can't Run Away From Yourself (Desert Sound Colony remix) (5:56)
Review: The garage heat continues to fly out of Instinct as Burnski's 2-step-tinted alias gets some serious remix treatment. Holloway takes control on the A side with a remix and dub of 'Can't Run Away From Yourself' that ups the ante in intricate beat craft while maintaining a rolling moody atmosphere and a walloping serving of wobbly bass. 0113 tackles 'Badman' and has fun flinging the core elements around the mix with gleeful abandon, making an utterly rude dancehall wrecker in the process. Desert Sound Colony steps up on the B2 to create a distinctive, breakstep-leaning version of 'Can't Run Away From Yourself' that will get bodies jumping and jiving all over the shop.

Apache
Apache (12")
Cat: INSTINCT 11. Rel: 17 Aug 20
  1. Apache (5:33)
  2. Ignite (4:26)
Review: Burnski's Instinct outlet continues to bring some serious firepower to the resurgent UK garage scene, and this time he's facing off with 0113 (otherwise known as Kepler.) for two rabble-rousing heaters packed with inventive twists on the 2-step formula. "Apache" is an intensely detailed roller that pivots around a killer vocal take, and uses all kinds of synth flourishes to create a wholly futuristic atmosphere - the garage of the future, but certainly not future garage. "Ignite" has a slightly more old-skool flavour that nods to past masters like Smith & Mighty as well as the pioneering work of El B et al. Classy stuff on both sides of this cool and deadly 12".

Time Is Now Allstars Vol 1

  2. Soul Mass Transit System - "Someone" (5:47)
  3. Holloway - "Wisemen" (4:47)
  4. Mainphase - "Mercy" (5:15)
  5. Ollie Rant - "Uptown" (4:28)
  6. Wilfy D - "Good Day" (6:29)
Review: Increasingly vital garage label Time Is Now keeps on kicking with this superb various artist six tracker. It recalls close associates like Holloway and Interplanetary Criminal as wells enlisting new names. All shades and sodas are covered here with face mangling jams like 'Mercy' covering the darker end of the spectrum and more sweet and fluid jams like 'Uptown' from Ollie Rant bringing plenty of soul, and a healthy dose of sax. Vocal pumpers from Soul Mass Transit and dubbed out minimalism from Holloway complete this most crucial of cuts.

Groovin' EP
Groovin' EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RNV 05. Rel: 14 Sep 20
  1. Groovin' (4:59)
  2. Not Because Of You (4:34)
  3. Teedra (6:37)
Review: Highrise continues to pile on the pressure through his breakout year in the buoyant UK garage scene, following up crucial spots on Plastik People and Shuffle 'n' Swing with more of that immaculately rendered 2-step tackle to get you shaking uncontrollably. 'Groovin' is steeped in soul and vibe, while 'Not Because Of You' gets even craftier with its organ chops and vocal slices. 'Teedra' on the B-side follows suit, displaying a razor sharp instinct for the funkiest slithers of sound to get bouncing around that deadly swing. If you need proof there's plenty of fresh garage being made these days, then cop yourself one of these before they're all snapped up.

Gabriel (reissue) (limited white vinyl 12")
Cat: LARV 019WHITE. Rel: 08 Aug 20
  1. Gabriel (The Scroll mix) (6:59)
  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

Cat: DPR 035. Rel: 22 Jun 20
  1. Myron (2steppah Re:refix)
  2. Myron (2step Re:re:refix)
  3. Myron
Review: Back in 1998 Groove Chronicles took on Myron's "We Can Get Down", delivering a hard-stepping breaks-y version which was dazzlingly fresh for the time, and still sounds effervescent now. DPR continue their incredible service to archival garage holy grails by digging this one out of the dust and offering up some newly aired versions to take you even deeper. This is the sweet and smoky side of the UKG scene, not least on the spacious and dubby "2step Re:re:refix" that kicks off the B-side. Mellow, moody and oh so smooth, but with bass pressure where it counts. Don't sleep on this one - it's guaranteed to fly out.

  2. 0113 - "Hard Lines" (5:46)
  3. Zac Stanton - "Stop Tellin Me" (6:13)
  4. Holloway - "Places To Be" (6:09)
Review: The campaign for real, modern UKG continues unabated over at Instinct, as another crew of like-minded bassbin botherers step up with their own fresh takes on the 2-step sound. Pinder is super speedy and tight as you like with "Forever", while Instinct regular 0113 gets freaky with the subtly tripped out "Hard Lines". Zac Stanton is perhaps the stand out turn on this 12" with the absolutely surefooted and sharply soulful "Stop Tellin Me". Holloway comes in strong on the B2 though, channeling that impeccable Ghost sound for the stripped and spooky "Places To Be". Classy club gear throughout, but especially on that B side.

  3. Alec Falconer - "40oz" (5:57)
  4. Alec Falconer - "40oz" (Jack Through The Tunnel mix) (6:52)
Review: On one of his previous EPs on the Orbital London label he inaugurated, Jack Michael has shared headline billing with Harry Wills. He's decided to repeat the exercise, though this time fellow rising star Alex Falconer is the other artist involved. Each offers up an original production and a remix of the other producer's track. Michael's A-side opener "Holding Down" is an inventive, funky and hugely addictive fusion of hardcore-era breakbeats, cut-up vocal samples and raw, razor-sharp acid lines, while Falconer's accompanying remix brilliantly re-wires the track as a chunk of warped, bass-heavy, mutant two-step garage. Falconer's own "40oz" tiptoes the fine line between two-step and sub-heavy hardcore revivalism, while Michael's revision is a rave-igniting old school delight.

Stableface EP Pt 1 (Peverelist remix)
  1. Stableface (original mix)
  2. Stableface (Peverelist remix)
Review: "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Lithuanian producer Eleven Tigers' debut album "Clouds Are Mountains" found itself pride of place on this 12" release from Soul Motive. Opening with an extended intro of cracked Burial-like atmospherics, the track soon gains a life of its own with its minimal 2-step beat and cracked vocal samples, complete with the kind of intricate melodicism of Four Tet. On the flip side Bristol's Peverelist turns in a fine reworking of the track. Taking the already sparse original and extending its panoramic reach even further, he concentrates on the micro qualities of the rhythms, opens up huge holes in the original's deft tapestry and creates a masterful reworking which brings out the dubstep within its DNA.

  3. Pose Up Kill Dem (4:50)
  4. Romanza (4:53)
Review: Does exactly what is says on the tin this one - serves up sounds befitting of a warehouse rave somewhere in the backstreets of London. Opener "Bronze" is a tough bit of garage with old school jungle breaks. "Escape" is broken beat banger with serious bottom end and eerie leads while "Pose Up Kill Dem" will warp your mind and melt your face with its rude boy verses and reversed stabs. "Romanza" closes out in serious fashion with a ditty lead melody and razor sharp drums and hits all glistening brightly through the murk of a late night rave. Another killer election from the mysterious Interplanetary Criminal.

Review: South London label GD4YA has had a fairly incredible year so far, with no fewer than five EPs out to date. It is now cult soundsmith Throwing Snow - a veteran of plenty of post-IDM inventions on Houndstooth - who steps up to stretch his legs with some sure fire dance floor weaponry. 'Murky' is just that with its broad bass and skipping drums, then 'Ellipsis' leans on UK funky drum patterns to get you up on your toes. Two remixes closes out, with Wen going for a perfect bit of swing, and Benny iLL keeping it deep, mid tempo, and warm.

  3. Cool Down (93 mix) (6:09)
  4. All Of The People (4:12)
Review: He may be based in Copenhagen, but rising star Adam "Main Phase" Emil makes UK garage so authentic that it could have been made by two dudes in Elephant and Castle. Further proof arrives via "Bluku" and "Eski", the two A-side tracks from his latest must-check EP. Both are sub-heavy two-step workouts whose warped bass sounds and eight-bit melodies owe plenty to another London-pioneered style, grime. Over on the flip, he takes us back to the rave era via the slack-tuned breakbeats, sparkling piano stabs, echoing female vocal snippets and elongated dark garage bass of "Cool Down (93 Mix)", before peppering a bustling, pitched-down jungle break with more ear-pleasing, 16-bit synth sounds on "All of the People".

  3. All The Stars (8:08)
  4. All The Stars (Nemo Vachez 4/4 Sunset dub) (5:18)
Review: Label boss Mitch Wellings is at the wheel for the second Space Tour outing - a year after the first - and is in fine form here. Opener "Break It Down" is a real party starter that melds garage drums and house soul into a compelling new beat that is clean and crisp, fresh and funky. "90 Steps" gets more deep and balmy, with smooth chords and neon tones wrapping you in melody while the kicking drums stay busy. "All The Stars" keeps up the innovation with knocking woody beats and R&B vocals next to bendy synth lines that sound distinctly UK. "All The Stars (Nemo Vachez 4/4 Sunset dub)" is a cute and curious closer.

Review: Garage house forever! Plastik People keep the fire burning like few others, and they press their intentions up clear as day with Danny J Lewis and Mike City's joyously catchy "I'm So 90s" with its sweet, soulful 'back in the 90s refrain'. It's sentimental and cheeky in equal measure, and the consummate garage house bumper from a label that do it so well. Marc Cotterell then pops up on the B side with "Jumpin '94", an organ soaked sizzler with delicious piano sprinkled on top and all the bump and flex you could wish for.

Just listen to the stirring strings of opening track "Frozen" or the jungle-flecked urgency of "Home" and you'll hear new dimensions to the sound revealing themselves with each listen. Steeped in cinematic imagery and loaded with obsessive levels of attention to detail, it's a powerful artistic statement that pushes Instinct to the forefront of Burnski's creative concerns.

Review: Southend-on-Sea party collective Gather are back with a quick follow up to their soon sold out debut offering STM back in March. It's another four track split EP with two tracks each by Soundboy Cookie and Bluetoof, who kicks off with the louche, sax flecked depths of 'Mistakes.' The Gradient mix is more doom laden with darker bass, and Soundboy Cookie then 'Brooklyn Swing' drops in some cheeky grooves and wonky chords to really pump the party. Last of all is the kinetic 'Mic Professional' with all its spin backs, stripped back beats and womp-womp bass. Delicious stuff.

Review: Brentford's finest pirate radio crew turned BBC sitcom stars have finally made it onto CD. For those familiar with the ebb and flow of their acclaimed People Just Do Nothing series, The Lost Tape is something of a treat. Presented as a non-step Korupt FM broadcast complete with Chabuddy G intro, skewed Steves mixing and rhymes from Grindah and DJ Beats, it's a memorable romp through the history of British garage and grime with a few exclusives and never-before-heard tracks thrown in. Stylistically, it's eerily reminiscent of many pirate radio mixtapes from back-in-the-day - which, of course, is the idea - but with the added bonus of laugh-out-loud moments amongst the scene anthems from Sunship, Wookie, DJ Zinc, Youngstar, Wiley, Dizzee and the boys themselves.

  12. Molecules (3:57)
  13. Moving Mountains (feat Brendan Reilly) (5:33)
  14. Afterthought (5:19)
Review: Brothers Disclosure bring the sound of house and more to the mainstream in incredible fashion, merging poppy vocals with basslines inspired by the likes of the Windy City's Mr Fingers and RP Boo. Furthermore there's splashes of UK styles like garage and dubstep in tracks like "Superego" and "Moving Mountains" and there's even smatterings of footwork in "Echoes". There's Ibiza-charged hits like "Nocturnal" to the skipping beats of "Holding On" that will make you think Daniel Bedingfield's made a comeback had Gregory Porter's lyrics not been there. And for some sublime club fodder check out "Hourglass".

Salsa Apocalypso
Cat: NONPLUS 018. Rel: 19 Dec 11
  1. Salsa
  2. Ache
Review: Nonplus continue to confound all with their esoteric approach to curation with the debut record from Doubleheart, a collaborative project between Optimo's JD Twitch and bass pioneer Neil Landstrumm. In a year of strong releases from the label, it easily stands out as one of their best; "Salsa" utilises brittle mechanical congas as the rhythmic backbone for the track, but it's the massively oscillating bass and sirens that really make it, being simultaneously huge but also restrained enough to prevent it falling into typical bass tropes. "Ache" meanwhile takes things down a notch with a housier tempo and thick bass slabs which threaten to go into full on acid at times. But it's the echoing vocal fragments and rhythm guitar that fascinate most, joining the dots between the obvious influence of Jamaican dub and contemporary bass.

Summers Of Love
Cat: NAIVE 010. Rel: 26 Feb 20
  1. Gotchu (5:09)
  2. WRTRGRER4A (5:06)
  3. Put On Our Classics (5:05)
  4. End Of The Nite (5:33)
Review: Wonky and off-kilter cuts from London-based producer Eleanor Pinfold aka Elles. This release is her first for Violet's Lisbon-based imprint Naive, and follows her 2019 release "emo_ecstasy_everything" on their experimental sub-label Naivety. Eloquently described as "a melodic ode to melancholy moments spent in clubs and broken romances captured in the snapshots of a strobe", UK club sounds of various eras definitely permeate these tracks. From the intoxicating slo-mo bass of "Gotchu" to the cheeky 2-stepper "Put On Our Classics" or the classic house throwback sounds of "End Of The Nite". All life-affirming vocals and hands in the air pianos that hark back to the namesake of the EP's title.

Some Bad Days EP (reissue)
Some Bad Days EP (reissue) (limited splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: TIN 003. Rel: 14 Aug 20
  1. Hold U Close (4:25)
  2. Bad Days (5:13)
  3. Homage To Claro (5:13)
  4. MFCC (5:21)
Review: In case the first couple of releases passed you by, Timeisnow is a new UK garage focused sub-label from Bristol-based house stable Shall Not Fade. This is the imprint's third 12" and showcases cuts from London-based rising star Holloway, whose previous outings include contributions to split EPs from another West Country label, the under-fire Dr Banana. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the two-step brilliance of opener "Hold U Close" - all sweet, seductive female lead vocals, Armand Van Helden "dark garage" sub-bass and jazzy musical flourishes - to the breakbeat garage heaviness of "MFCC", which reminded us of Zed Bias' earliest work as Maddslinky on Sirkus. Elsewhere, "Homage To Claro" is a bouncy broken beat affair, while "Bad Days" explores the moodier end of the two-step spectrum.

You Don't Wash
K7
Cat: K7 262EP. Rel: 08 Jul 10
  1. You Don't Wash (feat The Spaceape - vocal)
  2. You Don't Wash (dub)
Review: Kode9, Actress and Martyn: it's the ultimate forward leaning electronica menage a trois isn't it? "You Don't Wash", which featured on Hyperdub boss Kode9's recent DJ-Kicks mix, gets a 12" release here on !K7 Records. First up is the flying Dutchman Martyn, whose remix showcases his inimitable brand of shuffling, raw percussion and rumbling bass, while Spaceape's vocals are chopped and rearranged to jostle with some intriguingly tense strings. Werk Discs chief Actress, the producer of one of 2010's best albums, turns the original into a warped Latin-tinged hip shaker with jingling, out of phase chimes and whistles.

Cat: BEWITH 008TWELVE. Rel: 12 Jul 18
  1. Check 4 U (3:52)
  2. Check 4 U (Metrodome UK Gee mix) (5:16)
Review: Seminal Manchester street soul from 96; Bovel's "Check 4 U" had anthem status in clubs and on pirates throughout the city at the time but suffered limited pressing and an OG copy has been known to be priced at 2000 quid. Revitalised by Ruf Dug and Bovel herself, it now comes complete with a superb UKG update from Metrodome which maintains the feel of the era but with the pace and punch of the times. Limited to 1000 copies.

  1. Clownery (5:09)
  2. Do Not Follow Us (6:28)
  3. The Return Of The Gorgons (5:56)
  4. Serena (4:09)
Review: Watch your bassbins! Dogpatrol debuts on Sneaker Social Club following a string of fine releases elsewhere, and as you'd expect the resultant tracks are notably sub-heavy. For proof, check lead cut "Clownery", a bustling, mind-altering garage number that peppers two-step beats with cut-up female vocal samples and fuzzy, experimental techno type electronics, and the mangled but inspired track that follows, "Do Not Follow Us", where lo-fi bleeps and dub techno-esque chords bubble away above a rolling garage groove. He doffs a cap to UK funky on bouncy B-side opener "The Return Of The Gorgons" - a suitably cheeky and silly workout - while "Serena" is a percussively intricate skip through weighty post-dubstep pastures.

Secret Garden EP
Secret Garden EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RNV 02. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Secret Garden
  2. Together
  3. Endorphins
  4. Insomnia
Review: Ukranian producer SE62 has been ducking in and out of the limelight since 2009, notching up impressive releases on labels like My Love Is Underground and Home Taping Is Killing Music. Now he returns to deliver the second release on Rhythm N Vibe, and does so in style. There's a tripped-out, heady atmosphere to "Secret Garden" that would sound incredible on a Sunday session at Panoramabar, while "Together" is a much rawer proposition. "Endorphins" is a curveball of a track, all uptempo stomp and off the wall samples, and "Insomnia" finishes the EP off with another switch up. The crafty breakstep flex of the drums and sparse atmosphere make for a cool and deadly variation to the rest of the EP.

The Chunky EP
The Chunky EP (limited heavyweight vinyl double 12")
Cat: SWAMP 022. Rel: 04 Sep 12
  1. Decca
  2. Experiment 727
  3. Thang
  4. Rugged
Review: The Mancunian tones of Swamp81's resident MC Chunky are well known to those who tune in to the label's Rinse FM show on a regular basis. However, this debut EP, forwent any kind of vocal showcase for the kind of hefty, refined fusion of garage and techno we've come to expect from Loefah's empire. Arriving as a 12" doublepack featuring four tracks, The Chunky EP shows Chunky to have the production chops to match his skills on the microphone, showcasing a wide range of influences channeled through a uniquely dark mood; "Decca" is a straight up piece of rolling deep house with a shadowy basement vibe, while "Experiment 727? recalls the syncopated techno of Bambounou or Boddika's leaden beats, while on the second 12?, "Thang" is a masterclass in stripped back garage mechanics, and "Rugged" provides a lo-fi beat that ploughs the darkest recesses of instrumental grime for inspiration.
