Review: Timerhi Records have taken it upon themselves to think of the music they release as reliquary, likening each to an indentation made on the tapestry of history itself (Timehri is a Guyanese Amerindian word for petroglyph). Their latest sonic rock etching comes from much beloved drum n' bass pusher DJ Perception, who makes a complete detour here, swapping out the usual breaks-centrism for funky house, speed garage, 2-step and broken beat. 'Journey To The Star' is made up of myriad lo-fi dance tunes, from 'Darkside' to 'Jupiter's Lullaby', subverting the simplistic elements that historically make up UK dance music and flipping them on their heads. For once, 2-step garage isn't as 'down to earth' as it thinks it is - it's on the moon.

Review: Back in the early days of the UKG scene it was all about those famous Sunday sessions. This EP from Twostep2 captures the magic of that special time across three hefty and bass-driven new cuts that stay firmly entrenched in the underground sound. 'I Can't Let It Go' is a raw and jostling cut with metallic hits and a classic pitched-up r&b vocal. There is more cheeky skip and swing to 'Sound Of The Hardcore' with its innocent melodies and kinetic kicks, while closer 'War Of Da Worldz' brings 2step shuffle, great Big Ben samples and sustained chords that bring the soul.

Review: No digital, vinyl only. Save for these previews on Juno. Art Of Dark are one of just a handful of UK labels pushing 2-step garage in the best way they know how - 'keeping the tradition alive', if you will. Farty and strange as hell comes 'Hillyfields Warrior', referring to a lesser-known park in Hither Green known for its illegal parties and mystical properties. The A-side continues to be helmed up by proder JM Project, with 'Meltdown' serving harder and choppier flavours. Keo Lab handles the B and opts for nuskool electro and breakstep on 'Rich Cascade' and 'Swarm'.

Review: The Vivid label is yet another one from Burnski who also runs Constant Blanc and Instinct. He is s single handed garage hit making machine and he knows how to tap into the next gen, too. Here he calls upon Peaky Beats for a naughty and nasty three track affair that has retro feels but contemporary style. 'Can't Stop' opens up with a 2-step shuffle and steely hits, then 'Get Ready' gets more free and melodic with some boxing little melodic patterns and oscillating bass. Last of all is the most menacing and dark - 'Wildcat' flips into a dub wise swagger mid-way through that is going to blow up the clubs.

Review: Our second sound-clash instalment sees Panix lock heads with DJ Snowy Buffet. Based out of South London, Panix made a name for himself in the dubstep scene, before emerging as one of the most exciting producers of UKG and breaks. The A1, 'Premium Dubz' combines moody bass-lines with ravey stabs to make the ultimate 2-step dance floor killer. The A2, 'Hefty' does exactly what it says on the tin.. Hefty basslines and squeaky clean 4 to the floor drums. DJ Snowy Buffet is another veteran of the dubstep game, producing under the well known WZ. Surfacing as his new alias, the Czechoslovakian producer shows depth to his game with a bouncy UKG sound. The B1, 'Can I Tell' provides skippy garage drums and synths certain to light up any set. The B2, 'Club Life' showcases the darker side of UKG, with warping basslines and amen breaks.

Review: IRIS are also known as IRIS Soundsystem, made up of Eric H and DJ Joseph. They recorded a clutch of tunes back in 2000 and 2001 which capture the magic of the UK garage sound in a raw and ruff form, and now they've been unearthed and pressed up by the good folk at Bubblin Fresh. 'One Eye' is a skippy 2-stepper with a nu jazz undercurrent (just check that bassline), while 'Beabay' takes a more melancholic trip through minor Rhodes chords and minimal beats. 'Shastic' has a little more fun with the bass, getting properly wobbly underneath more of those atmospheric keys, and 'Myumax' locks into a spooky little shuffler which fans of El-B should absolutely take note of.

Review: 'Ripgroove' or 'RIP Groove' is inarguably the catalysing classic of speed garage. It's always a breath of fresh air when a relatively unknown act goes down in musical history, as it proves the music world hasn't been entirely subsumed into the industrial fame monster. Tim Deluxe and Omar Adimora were barely out of their teens when they made the beepy, jungle-voice-timestretchy hit, which, we'll have you know, reappropriated the melody of Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' and turned it into a killer womping bassline. Now, as is much deserved, a slew of banging remixes of Ripgroove comes as part of an anniversary edition repress: it's got a 2-step version from 10 Below, two 'Reimaginations' in dub and breakbeat style, and even a jungle version from Fixate.

Review: Londoner Otik has been about for a long while now, but his Aus Music debut signals some serious tack-change when it comes to putting true respect on the name of an artist who deserves it. 'Xoul Trap' not only references a Skyrim game mechanic, but delivers four Uk-funky-ish dream-heaters to either quench or ignite the soul, depending on one's inclinations in the dance. The haunting vocal chops and thunderous kicks of the title track, the shuffling chords and speaker-rattling subs of 'Temptress', the washed-out synthesis and pumping 4/4 of 'Inertia,' and the shimmering UK Funky inspo of 'Unorthodox' render this a solid top-up to the rep of UK dance music on the international stage.

Review: For those who've yet to check out his productions, Envee is regarded as Poland's number one producer of underground dance music with soul. This EP sees his make his belated bow on soulful dance music institution Local Talk, with a little help from legendary UKG producer (and all-round studio don) Zed Bias. There are two Envee originals on show: 'Sum Luv', a gorgeous, sun-splashed, modern soul-meets-slow house head-nodder smothered in organic instrumentation and eyes-closed female vocals, and the jazz-funk-flavoured broken beat swell of 'Styrax'. Both are remixed in a club-ready style by Zed Bias. His wobbly, sub-bass-sporting two-step take on 'Sum Luv' is simply sublime, while his similarly UKG-powered take on 'Styrax' recalls the soulful jazziness of his Phuturistix project.

Review: Will Hofbauer returns to Wisdom Teeth for another addition to the label's Hessle-esque vision for the fleshing out the more playful side of 'bassy techno'. Hofbauer is a firm fixture and favourite of the sort of quasi-underground UK DJ circuit that has cut the teeth of the likes of Moxie, Rhythm Section, OK Williams and Ben UFO - and these four new ones are bound to cement that favour, with bare-essentials bits like 'Subtracing The Egg' blending with mischievous audio-hijinks like 'Hiccups' for a humorous, yet no less powerful EP.

Review: Endangered Musique kicks off with a high-quality reissue of an EP that deep house heads will either already know or soon grow to love. It was written by Jose Chinga in 1994 and is an alias of an artist better known as Brothers' Vibe aka Tony Rodriguez. The opening tune 'Love Is What You Need' is also the most well-known - it's US garage with low-slung drums and grainy pad work with a simple but effective vocal. 'I Got You' picks up the pace with shuffling drums and a grinding lead before the warm 90s house sounds come to the fore again on 'Let It Go' and 'Riding On A Cloud'. Lovely stuff.

Review: Fans of traditional US house - and why wouldn't you be - will salivate over this new EP from the Plastik People label. It's a pure and feel-good four tracker steeped in New York style that brings those magic 90s vibes to the dance floor. First up is the warm and bouncy '4 Real' (937 main mix) with its dumpy kicks and humid organic chords, then 'Psycho Times' ups the pace with a nice grinding bassline and heavy US garage vibes in the chuffing kicks while 'Dusty Sound' owes a debt to the one and only Kerri Chandler for its lush and jazzy musicality. Review: It's been a while since we heard any convincing electro-garage or UK funky, but this new and extremely rough-round-the-edges EP from Sky Joose might just have persuaded us once more. Debuting for the anarchic UK label Renegade Season as their fourth white label slab, these bits are proving that people with an ear for the 'true' sonic spirit of garage are still out there and kicking it. Curious moods are conveyed on both light-hearted cuts like 'Runaway', not to mention the bubbly future world that is 'Ace', with its vocoders and back-alley spookiness, plus the rousingly melodic funky cut 'Shango Dub'.

Review: A melting pot of UK garage, house and bass, DJ Swagger's latest release on Berlin-based label, 777, is a fascinating exploration in structure and chaos. Opening track, 'Thanks Felix', moves at lightspeed - a thrilling race through a gritty arrangement of blunted kicks, shifting in and out of focus, moving between order and disorder. 'Fingerclut' emerges with an instantly more house-facing feel - a satisfyingly hypnotic groove spirals in a circle motion, featuring a cyclonic gathering of subtle flecks of percussive variation over the course of the track. Offering a spliced, glitched-out take on contemporary bass, 'Final Bout' journeys through moments of airy weightlessness before being thrown back into the growling, driving bass section of the track. The perfect tension builder, 'Full Cycle', is an ingenious tease of a track, skillfully building up to, you guessed it, even more build.

Review: Demuir's Visions album gets its first series of remixes here as standout cut 'Home Sweet Home (The Journey)' gets reworked by Baltimore's finest dance music ambassador and bona fide legend DJ Spen. First up he brings some shuffling and deep soul to the groove with an irresistible skip to the drums and a lush vocal. The dub pairs things back a little further with more splash in the percussion and last of all comes the Hump mix. Review: Well, it's been a long old while since we saw or heard the Semtek name. His last release on these pages was a full six years ago on his own always mighty fine Don't Be Afraid imprint with only one or two other EPs credited to him in the whole of the last decade. Rubadub have done well to coax him out of semi-retirement because these two tracks are hard: 'Denny Island' is a supple drum workout with darkness in the air but plenty of deep cosmic feels keeping things warm and welcoming. 'Catching Smoke' is another one defined by its rubbery busy bottom end and atmospheric synth work up top. Two heads-down back room beauties.

Review: Few other labels have been as instrumental in the garage revival as Time Is Now. Everything they do has hit a perfect sweet spot - never too nostalgic and reverential to the DOGs, and always with something fresh and future facing to enjoy. Yosh once again strikes that perfect balance on this handy four tracker. There is booming sub bass to sink into on the deep 2-stepper 'Show Me' then 'Principle' ups the pace with more percussive clatter, jungle breaks and rude boy bass stabs. 'Point Blank' pulls back again to a dark and atmospheric late night riddim and 'Take Down' is a nawty little number with sick neon chords.
