  2. Perilous (4:26)
  3. That Got Dark (5:25)
  4. That Got Dark (Interplanetary Darker mix) (5:42)
Review: By now everyone knows Time Is Now is a sure bet when it comes to the freshest new garage, breakbeat and all-round smart, headsy party gear, and so we pay attention when a fresh name crops up. Bluetoof has been spotted here and there, on a split 12" with Soundboy Cookie and on an Accidental Meetings compilation, but this marks one of their biggest releases to date, which kicks off in style with the big, booming and spacious roller 'Alakazam'. 'Perilous' takes things into gnarly, darkside 2-step, while 'That Got Dark' goes to town on the cool and deadly breakbeats. Interplanetary Criminal steps up with a hollering remix of 'That Got Dark' that opts for bashy 4x4 as the rhythm of choice, and makes an absolute monster in the process.

  6. Be Down (3:57)
Review: 2-step meets Latin guitar on this third white label from Dafs, which leads a stonking 6 tracks across two sides with a Pinkpantheress-style rerub of Mahalia's modern classic, 'Sober'. What ensues afterwards is an R&B-heavy array of steppy choons, owing heavily to UK garage's known origins in R&B, new jack swing and hip-hop. 'Stay Ready' samples the eponymous song by Jhene Aiko, condensing her heavenly vocals to alchemic vocal science, while further rerubs of Usher and, of course, Brandy, top it off.

  1. Counter Strike (6:15)
  2. Armshouse (6:25)
  3. Return (6:26)
  4. Return (Al Wootton remix) (5:24)
Review: Perhaps Council Work are this generation's Keysound, pushing the classic sound of the London underground and fusing it with the haunted present we find ourselves in. With 5 releases notched on the belts of label owners Frankel & Harper, their sound as a pair is smooth and crunchy, and that's no less or more true for their latest, 'Return', which weaves Cockney kitchen sink-drama vocal samples through echo, reese and step. Deft Horsepower stylee.

Limited (12")
Cat: DTR 022. Rel: 04 May 22
  1. Inside Your Mind (5:41)
  2. To The Beat (5:33)
  3. Morgans Vibe (6:17)
Review: Back in 1994 UK garage was still in an embryonic stage, with the bumping US sound still defining the style even as a darker, moodier strain was starting to come through. From the legendary Nice n Ripe crew came this 12" of heavyweight pressure, and while the G.O.D. tag wound up being used by other producers, on this Limited release it was the work of Grant Nelson and Si Firmin. The A side cut 'Inside Your Mind' is an intense, heads down workout which nods to the likes of Chez N Trent, while 'To The Beat' bring a rougher vibe with mammoth subs and manic sampling that points to the future in no uncertain terms.

Disc Service 01
  1. Jeigo - "Bloom" (6:37)
  2. Max Casebolt - "INOu" (4:58)
  3. DJ Chupacabra - "Lowrider" (5:22)
  4. Frankel & Harper - "Madness Of Life" (2:39)
Review:  A new offering from the Banoffee Pies clan comes in the shape of Disc Service 01, comprising garage-licked minimal tech with oodles of colour and a joie de vivre we all need as we barrel through the winter months. London producer Jeigo is up first with the subtly trippy 4x4 romper 'Bloom', while Max Casebolt leans in on the RnB vox for the elegant and shimmering 2-stepper 'INOu'. DJ Chupacabra serves up something with a distinctly French flavour (see also: Ark) on the choppy but resolutely deep 'Lowrider', and Frankel & Harper switch things up for a sweet and soulful broken beat finisher.

  2. Oldboy - "Walrus Party" (4:50)
  3. Xander - "If I Tell EM" (4:58)
  4. Xander - "Get To The Point" (4:52)
  5. Longeez - "Evermore" (4:47)
  6. Longeez - "Wheel Up" (5:09)
Review: The latest from Burnski's Vivid label is a three way split, six track affair with Oldboy, Xander and Longeez each dispatching a pair of tunes in the label's trademark roughneck breakbeat style. - Oldboy kicks off proceedings with the speedy junglisms of 'Blackbird' before the chunkier, funkier and a little more traditionally paced breaks heft of 'Walrus Party'. Xander's 'If I Tell EM' and 'Get To The Point' both plays off two step rhythmic twists and menacing bass against dreamy synths and more breakbeaty flourishes, before Longeez closes proceedings with the slightly sparser 'Evermore' - super sharp hi hats and echoing rasta dialogue - and the appropriately spinback-peppered 'Wheel Up'.

Cat: INSTINCT 20. Rel: 11 Apr 22
  1. Gemini (5:49)
  2. Kilo Of Filo (5:19)
  3. De Nata (4:40)
Review: Burnski's Instinct label serves up some fresh platters from a new name, Papa Nugs. These are of course naughty as you like garage tinged late night gems for cosy dance floors. Opener 'Gemini' is a high speed affair with exotic strings and neck-snapping hits. 'Kilo of Filo' is a super heavy wobbler with a fat as fuck bottom end oscillation. 'De Nata' closes out on more super crisp breakbeats that recall the genres hey day when artists like Ali B were knocking out killer mixes for Fabric. All killer no filler, as ever with this label.

Get Me (Groove Chronicles mix)
Cat: S00 122. Rel: 27 Apr 22
  1. Get Me (Groove Chronicles mix) (5:20)
  2. Get Me (Groove Chronicles mix - instrumental) (5:21)
Review: If you're even half serious about UK garage, you should be very excited about this reissue. Sia's voice became an iconic sound in the peak of UKG's glory days, and amongst other reasons that because of this drop. Groove Chronicles, otherwise known as Noodles initially alongside El-B, is one of the most important projects in defining the UKG sound, and everything falls into place perfectly on this most classic of remixes. This is as classy as garage ever got, with that cool and laid back Chronicles touch on the keys and an oh-so crisp beat all riding underneath Sia's inimitable voice. An absolute, unrivalled gem, finally back on wax.

Set You Free
Cat: VIVID 11. Rel: 04 Apr 22
  1. Set You Free (4:43)
  2. Nah Nah Nah (5:43)
  3. Phat Booty (3:55)
  4. Smoke (3:52)
Review: Since joining forces as Soul Mass Transit System a couple of years ago, Baby J and D Jason have released a wealth of club-ready 12" singles, many of which explore their love of vintage UK garage. This EP on Vivid is a little more eclectic but no less celebratory or peak-time ready. For proof, check saucer-eyed opener 'Set You Free', where giddy old school piano stabs, stretched-out sub-bass and spinetingling female vocal samples ride a rolling breakbeat, and the revivalist hardcore hedonism of the ludicrously bass-heavy 'Nah Nah Nah'. They doff a cap to their bassline roots on crunchy breakbeat roller 'Phat Booty', before drawing a fine EP toa close with the two-step-goes-Niche heaviness of 'Smoke'.

Inside Looking Out
Cat: DCLSFD 003. Rel: 27 Apr 22
  1. Inside Looking Out (5:01)
  2. All Night (4:32)
Review: The third release on SP:MC's own Declassified Records label is another killer from the boss himself. The man born Stewart Proctor's first two releases sold out in quick time and thus one will as welll: it another meticulously crafted, high quality two tracker that mixes up bumpy garage, shadowy 2-step and plenty of heft bass. 'Inside Looking Out' kicks off with those mysterious late night vibes, primed and ready for a dark and gritty warehouse space. On the flip, 'All Night' samples classic Chicago house vocal over a skeletal groove with some nice warm and jazzy chords. It's an absolute viber that will bump and dance floor.

So True (hand-stamped 10")
Cat: PRESTIGE 002. Rel: 06 May 22
  1. So True (4:59)
  2. Give You Love (4:08)
Review: Prestige Cuts deliver premium, fully fat-marbled remix cuts of classics to 12" wax. On the A-side of their second single, a hazed-out garage remix of Groove Chronicles' 'Stone Cold' comes to the surface, adding gargantuan reverb to the original vocals and pad mix. The B-side, 'Give You Love', offers a belling-trilling rework of a lesser-known classic. A brilliant new bit from Robin Wylie.

Review: Instinct has been one of the key protagonists in garage's ongoing renaissance. Not only have his tunes given a fresh take on the much loved old sound, but there have been plenty of them, too. Now he's back with yet another full length, and once again it's packed with heat. There are deep shufflers that nod to the original US garage sound, as well as darker, 2-step tinged get downs. More so than before, there seem to be plenty of reversed bass stabs and MC vocals, old school signifiers and jungle breaks that pay homage to the roots of the sound while never simply copying it. The heart aching vocal of 'Don't Know' is our fave and a likely candidate for one of this summer's standout tunes.
