It's been a hot minute since Al Kent dropped some of his sweet and soulful dancefloor instinct on us, but he's back in style on his reanimated Million Dollar Disco label. "Pick Me Up (Say Goodbye)" takes Gladys Knight & The Pips' tender "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Say Goodbye)" and gives it a supremely pitched dancefloor injection. Upping the tempo and rolling out an organic disco beat, Knight's vocal gets a whole new backdrop without losing the emotional heft of the track. A truly heart-melting cut for that sentimental, cut loose, late end of the party.

Under the Guts guise, instrumental hip-hop beat-maker turned tropical soul enthusiast Fabrice Franck Henri has become one of Heavenly Sweetness' most reliable artists. "Philantropiques" is Henri's first album for three years and could well be his most expansive and adventurous to date. The set's 14 tracks are as colourful and musically rich as you'd expect, with the storied producer and a range of vocal collaborators conjuring up tracks that draw influence from a myriad of Central American, Caribbean, South American and African styles. The results are uniformly excellent, with highlights including the tropical shuffle of "Mucagiami (feat Vum Vum)", the sun-kissed French Caribbean funk of "Daddy Sweet (feat Pat Kalla)", the Afro-Tropical rush of "Kenk Corner" and the synth-powered brilliance of "Shake It and Rise Up".

What more can be said about the output of Alex 'Omar' Smith? The Detroiter's releases have perhaps been a little more varied of late than we've come to expect, but the quality nevertheless remains dizzyingly high. This white label excursion is full of floor-friendly gems, with Smith's use of classic house samples and familiar vocal samples also making it one of his most party-hearted releases for a while. Check, for example, "Catch Ya", where a much-loved turn-of-the-'90s acapella rises above bouncy New Jersey organs and snappy machine drums. "Better Believe It Baby" brilliantly wraps a chiming synth loop and R&B style vocal snippets around a chunky, disco-fired deep house beat, while "Cheat" and "Pull Ovaa" are deliciously dusty, bass-heavy deep house workouts with just the right amount of hypnotic late night charm.

On his previous album, 2017's "Inspirations", veteran jazz vocalist Dwight Trible joined forces with Manchester bandleader Matthew Halsall to cover some of his favourite songs. Two years on, the Los Angeles-based artist returns with a set of mostly new compositions recorded with a backing band including broken beat veteran Mark de Clive-Lowe on keys (thrillingly, fellow LA resident Kamasi Washington also features on title track "Mothership"). It's an impressive album, all told, with Trible's soulful, impassioned vocals and conscious, hard-hitting lyrics providing a constant source of inspiration on tracks that are variously impressively spiritual, intensely psychedelic, delightfully uplifting and seductively soulful.

Japanese jazz pianist Ryo Fukui bowed out in 2016, passing away following the release of his final album, the very personal "A Letter From Slowboat". The album was a touching tribute to the Showboat jazz club in Soporo, a venue where he played countless times in the final years of his life. Here that album gets a vinyl release for the very first time. It's something of a contemporary piano jazz classic, all told, with Fukui's fluid and positive improvised solos taking centre stage throughout. His accompanying musicians - a drummer and a double bassist - make their presence felt at just the right time, too, with more up-tempo dancefloor workouts "Speak Low", "Soultrane" and "Sonora" standing out.
