Witchcraft EP
Cat: OVD 002. Rel: 02 Jul 18

Deep Dubstep
Breakthrough (5:31)
Terror Strike (3:20)
Witchcraft (4:41)
Review: Deep dubstep heads may already be aware of Dalek One. He's been releasing good quality music for a couple of years digitally, though the Witchcraft EP appears to be his first appearance on vinyl. There's much to admire throughout, from the bombastic, pulverizing sub-bass and clandestine, Burial style sound soup of opener "Breakthrough", to the fantastically heavy and suitably trippy title track, where both bassline and beats change tempo and time signature several times throughout. The EP's other moment, "Terror Strike", is a dark, stabbing dubstep roller primed for peak-time plays at venerable bass music institutions.

Can't Walk EP
Cat: DSDV 003. Rel: 24 Sep 19

Dirty Dubstep/Trap/Grime
Can't Walk (4:48)
Skincrawler (4:30)
Sicim (with Max Mischief) (3:45)
Review: Ooof. Denver darksmith Dalek One lashes out with more savage magic, this time on St Louis collective Dub Sector. The EP kicks off with "Can't Walk", a raw fusion of swaggering beats, cannon ball bass hits and sudden flurries of amenistic breaks that fly by before you even realise. "Skincrawler" follows but with even more edge and coldness. Pranged out, trippy and cold to the bone, it lives up to its name in every way. Finally, Dalek teams up with Max Mischief for the closing farewell "Sicim". Icy, haunted and laced with chilling guitar loops, things suddenly take a turn for the strange as the warped basses weep into the mix. Powerful; no one does it quite like Dalek.

ENV 019
ENV 019 (12")
Cat: ENV 019. Rel: 13 Mar 19

Deep Dubstep
Eyes Red (3:49)
Wire Tap (3:34)
Man Sees Aliens (4:38)
Review: Although Dalek One has been exterminating dancefloors (sorry) for some time, it was only last summer that the deep dubstep don made his long-awaited vinyl debut. Here he keeps up the pressure via a weighty EP on Encrypted Audio. Check first the mangled, electronically scrambled rap vocals and sci-fi riddims of "Eyes Red", before getting your ears around the elongated sub-bass tones, tribal percussion and paranoid electronics of "Wire Tap". If that's not enough to set the pulse racing - and it should be - we'd recommend whacking on the crackling, sub-heavy roller that is time-travelling dancefloor treat "Man Sees Alien". In summary: pleasingly far-out.

Echo Signal EP
Cat: 786X 002. Rel: 18 May 20

Deep Dubstep
Echo Signal (3:41)
Nobody Got My Style (3:38)
Galaxy Dub (3:47)
Shackled (with Binary) (4:44)
Review: Riding the chem trails of his remarkable "Deep, Dark & Dangerous" EP, Dalek One jumps aboard D-Operation Drop's new ship 786. Four tracks deep, he's taking us on a serious cruise. As always with Colorado long-timer, less is more and tension is always high. Flavours range from subtly jungle-influenced slo-mo warper "Nobody Got My Style" to the melting textures, centipede bass and haunted house basses of "Shackled". Fresh for the lockdown generation.

Bat Country
Cat: ENV 023. Rel: 13 Nov 19

Deep Dubstep
Bat Country (3:16)
Yucatan (4:00)
Apogee (3:30)
Review: Bristol buds Glume & Phossa link up once again for another superb collab collection. This time on Encrypted, it's another trippy hat trick. "Bat Country" kicks off with a sense of cosmicity that gets deeper as the track begins to open up into an awesome sample you and your dad will recognise. Gradually upping the strange as the EP develops, "Yucatan" gets all Halloweeny with its arpeggio and strange warped keys while "Apogee" flips out in a ping-pong frenzy with layers of pipes and chimes which all double up in a really interesting and surprising way. Batty... In the best possible way.

Banshee EP
Banshee EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MEDI 120. Rel: 08 Apr 21

Deep Dubstep
Banshee (3:43)
Jitter (3:19)
Vessel (4:28)
Sunken (4:22)
Review: The Banshee EP was one of the last musical projects the pair of Glume and Phossa worked on together in Bristol before they left the city to live elsewhere. Lead single 'Banshee' has been played for years on the circuit and always got great reactions, so the pair sat down to write three more tunes to go with it for the sake of this EP. That was during lockdown so they haven't been road tested yet but rest assured when they are, the club will erupt. Each one hits deep, with trippy synth motifs from the Orient on 'Jitter', warrior energy on 'Vessel' and more broken beats on 'Sunken.'

Review: Oskar Allen and Luke Barnett are Glume & Phossa, but beyond that we dot know much about them, Musically this superb album shows that they bridge the gap between electronica, trap and hip-hop with plenty of slick and sleek minimal rhythms and glistening synths. There's a psychedelic edge to these sounds - hyper real melodies and warped vocal sounds - that makes it otherworldly and futuristic at the same tie as having the sort of nostalgic chords that remind you of a time you probably never actually lived. Brilliant stuff for either home listening or the dance floor.
