Under Your Spell (heavyweight coloured vinyl LP)

Coldwave/Synth
  1. Under Your Spell (4:54)
  2. Don't Call (4:15)
  3. Mirroir Mirroir (5:21)
  4. Under Your Spell (vocal mix) (4:55)
  5. I Can Dream About You (5:28)
  6. Don't Call (vocal mix) (4:24)
Review: The Desire trio is made up of John Padgett, Megan Louise, and Nat Walker. Together, they've released a handful of EP's and an LP for the excellent Italians Do It Better, and they return to the label with a new six-tracker of off-the-wall, sultry synth disco. "Under Your Spell" is a soundtrack kind of tune, where Louise's vocals ride ever so well amid crunchy, mid-tempo drum machine beats, but there's also plenty of uplifting discotheque fun such as "Don't Call", and the supremely funky "Mirroir Mirroir". The B-side features a moodier vocal mix of the title track, the quirky bleeps and beats of "I Can Dream About You", and the beatless vocal mix of "Don't Call". Whether you're into synth pop, coldwave, or disco, Desire is sure to please your needs.

Soundtracks
  1. The Other Side Of Midnight (part 1) (17:42)
  2. The Other Side Of Midnight (part 2) (13:30)
Review: Having worked together on the set of 2011's Drive, Ryan Gosling has called on the services of composer Johnny Jewel for the actor's directorial debut, Lost River. We haven't seen the film yet so we can't comment on the blend between sound and cinematography, but we can tell you that this soundtrack is pure class from beginning to the end, a masterful artillery of dark ambience and atmospheric drones. The Italians Do It Better head honcho delivers two parts of "The Other Side Of Midnight", the first being a rough, heavy piece of noise metal that would satisfy any Wolf Eyes fan, while the second chapter is tamer, more submerged in a layer of deep, ethereal pads and subaqueous synths. All in all, compared to the rest of Hollywood's current musical output, this is totally killer - and totally recommended.

Review: Finally in on triple vinyl! Given the fashion for library music, disco noir and the synth-heavy soundtrack work of Goblin and John Carpenter, it was probably inevitable that Italians Do It Better would dip their toe into cinematic waters at some point. Themes From An Imaginary Film is their contribution to the oeuvre - an all-star collection of melodic synth doodles, atmospheric compositions and faux cinematic themes produced by Chromatics/Glass Candy men Jonny Jewell and Nat Walker. Its 37 tracks are, predictably, impressively evocative, variously recalling sounds and styles previously employed by notable synth composers Vangelis, Jan Hammer, Claudio Simonetti and, of course, John Carpenter.

Review: ** Clear vinyl edition! ** Way back in 2007, it was arguably the release of the After Dark compilation that really put Italians Do It Better on the map. These days, Mike Simonetti and Johnny Jewel's infamous label is part of the furniture, though it still retains an ability to amaze with the quality of its releases. After Dark 2 is, predictably, another cracker. Showcasing mostly new and previously unreleased music from the label's impressive roster, it's packed with stylish, synth-laden gems, from the yearning melancholy of Chromatics' brilliant "Cherry", and the droning, late night intensity of Farah's "Into Eternity", to the tactile, intergalactic atmospherics of Simonetti's "The Magician" and sparkling new-wave pomp of Glass Candy's four impeccable contributions. Don't sleep!
