Abu Ali (Record Store Day 2019) (limited yellow vinyl 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: WWSLP 021LP. Rel: 30 Apr 19
International
  1. Abu Ali (13:12)
  2. Prelude (Theme From Mais El Rim) (12:49)
Review: Wewantsounds' 2019 Record Store Day release takes us back to 1978 and a hard-to-find 12" single from Lebanese composer, pianist, playwright and political commentator Ziad Rahbani. "Abu Ali" is perhaps not Rahbani's best known work - in the Arab world his various albums are far more celebrated - but it is one that has chimed with Western audiences thanks to its assimilation of elements of American disco, soul and funk. The title track is something of a beast: a 10-minute epic that wraps Arabic orchestration, mazy horn refrains and prominent piano motifs around an atmospheric disco groove and intergalactic synthesizer lines. It's bonkers but brilliant, making this reissue more than welcome. On the flipside there's a chance to enjoy "Prelude (Theme from Mais El Rim)", an epic example of Rahbani's 1970s soundtrack work.

Review: Gabriel Reyes Whittaker is The Abstract Eye: an L.A.-based producer also known as GB (Gifted & Blessed) and Frankie Reyes. Regarding the dynamic pace of the music industry, he asks the question, what's real anymore? For him, it comes down to the feelings this music evokes. Last year saw the much needed reissue of his underrated 2011 opus Cool Warm Divine on Holland's Rush Hour, and this new record is another emotive release which explores classic electro and techno sounds - borrowing from the best of the genre's recent past but reinterpreting it in his own distinct way. From the old school deep techno bounce of "Land, Sky & Sea" to the chill groove of "What's Real Anymore?" or the mellow electro of "Butterfly Patterns" - thia is as real as it gets.

  2. The Sunset Of Puerto Sagunto (4:47)

  4. Viajando (Kejeblos dub) (5:02)
Review: This is a very confident debut from previously unheralded Balearic musician Pablo Color, whose music - on this evidence, at least - is as vibrant as his musical moniker suggests. The Swiss producer begins with the warm and atmospheric "Viajando", where echo-laden electric guitar motifs rise above a gently shuffling dub disco groove. "The Sunset of Puerto Sagunto" sees him sliding into Jonny Nash style ambient territory, while "The Guitar & The Sea" is a crackling, intoxicating, bongo-driven weird-out that sounds like an unlikely hook up between Black Merlin and Mudd. The EP is completed by a fantastic deep space dub of "Viajando" by Kejeblos (with support from Lexx on keyboards). Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: If you are lucky enough to have visited Dusseldorf club Salon Des Amateurs, you may be familiar with one of its residents, the cultish Serbian DJ Vladimir Ivkovic whose daring sets are inspiration to another of the venue's stars in Lena Willikens. Often Music is Ivkovic's new label and their first release shines a light on the unreleased archives of pioneering Serbian electronic artist Rex Ilusivii, real name Mitar Suboti?. The Serbian artist sadly passed away in a studio fire in 1999 leaving behind a vast number of unreleased works recorded over a decade from 1980 onwards. Six of those rescued tracks feature on this double 12" release In The Moon Cage (side 4 houses an etched illustration) and the more daring selectors out there will find them quite inspirational.

Review: Active between 2006 and 2009, the Members Only series was essentially a homage to the days of Muzic Box and Ron Hardy from Jamal Moss which saw the Mathematics boss dramatically rewire everything from Loleatta Holloway to Chris & Cosey via Liaisons Dangereuses and Gil Scott Heron. The series has long been out of print, though a recent Members Only edit for the Brasserie Heroique series from Berceuse Heroique will have ignited some interest in the project amongst a new generation of collectors and selectors. This Editions Disco Vol 1 double pack should be viewed as a second chance to witness Moss doing disco edits in the manner they were originally intended. Moments of outright queasiness (the klaxon that runs throughout the Frankie Goes To Hollywood revision will really test a dancefloor's patience) sit alongside killer percussive disco cuts and wonderful oddness like the closing Banamarama edit.

Review: Andy C's mega-label Ram celebrates the big 200 in style: triple vinyl in trifold sleeve with etched sixth side, each of the five cuts represent Ram's dark, start extremes. The touching depths of Culture Shock's long-awaited "Piano Dark", the Noisia-level antics of Audio on his June Miller, InsideInfo's deep throat bass on "The Truth" and the add bass fluctuations on Rene's VIP. 200 singles deep and still killing it, Ram have put together a serious package here.

Review: It's the big, bad Joe Claussell, and the master reigns in the new year with this absolute stunner of an EP for the Sacred Rhythm label. This is Claussell at his most daring, however, and while you might be expecting some phat-ass house beats and groovy tribalism, the man goes far left of the field on here. The opening "Dungeon Maggots" is a translucent blend of crystal synths and subtle dub echoing, while "Matter Of Factness" injects a delicate house flow into the mix, propelled into motion by a dubby guitar riff. "Affect", "Nuances", and "Seciov" all act as beatless electronic tools, a trio of synth sways to add extra effect to your DJ mix. Yes, Joe!

Review: The Busy Twist run a really interesting operation... Inspired by the UK's bass movement, the London-based producers have recorded extensively in their native Ghana, giving this a truly international tongue. A fine case in point is Drumtalk's remix of the brilliantly titled "Auntie Fatty": riddled with all manner of chopped up chants and percussion, there's a very familiar riff on the drop. "Floor Excitement" is another highlight; the vocals are reminiscent of a Wookie plate but delivered with heartwarming gusto. Technically this is an EP... But with such a bounty of tropical treats, this is almost album material.

  6. Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

After six successful albums throughout the 80's before disbanding and making a brief return in 2010, the group's new single "Hit Or Miss" will appear on their first album in 38 years: Love 4 Love which is produced by Change alumni Davide Romani Mauro Malavasi, it's got the same kind of life-affirming soul power you've come to love from the outfit, and they've still got the knack for a great tune - listen for yourself!

Review: Having previously only appeared on WotNot Music in the past couple of years, K15 now slides over to Wild Oats to deliver a wholly appropriate slab of fluttering house romanticism rich in Detroit dreams and Chicago cheekiness, wherever the music might have been conceived. The cheekiness is no doubt most noticeable on "GWRH" with its homage to "Gypsy Woman", turning it into a fluttering Latino house jam, but before that comes the plush bump n rub of "The Story Of Her Life". "Insecurities" gets into a sexier kind of deep house funk, which "Gratitude" dutifully carries on until "Yellow" can round the record out with some largely beatless piano business.

  4. Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

Review: The combination of Richard H. Kirk and Minimal Wave was never going to disappoint, but the four tracks on this Never Lose Your Shadow 12" are still very special! Digging deep through the archives of the Cabaret Voltaire front man, Veronica Vasicka presents a quartet of solo recordings that have never been committed to wax before. The highlight is undoubtedly the A Side title track, a lolloping ten minute track of hypnotic industrial action made all the more memorable by Kirk's acerbic intonations about "the blind leading the blind". If you've caught a Vasicka DJ set recently you will have probably lost yourself to these ten minutes. On the flip are three tracks recorded in the same late '70s period which are distinctly more experimental in tone and just as vital.

Fans of the Romanian's work will delight in this double pack on his and Tulbure's prospering TC Studio label with the six tracks on Lobster Club really showing Chereches' full production range. Review: Every time that we get a drop of some new Joaquin Joe Claussel material our ears are automatically attracted in that very same direction. In fact, we've been known to get into trouble for playing his material extensively on our Juno HQ system, because we just hate to see it leave. However, this new material is probably not what you're expecting; rather than a new house EP, Mr Claussel has prepared a nerd's guide to sound testing, described by himself as: "DJ tool for testing, measurement, and calibration of mediocre reproducing stereo sound systems". The elements inside the box are flex-discos, not vinyl, and they are a series of sound, spoken word lyrics, and general FX tricks to either test your system out on, or simply sample and twist-up however you please. It's a collectors piece, and something refreshingly different to support the development of good music in clubs. We love you Joe...

Review: BOOM! Our favourites, Cititrax, roll the third editions of Tracks out onto our shelves, and the results are unsurprisingly strong on this excellent various artists comp. It's a mixed bag of skills, as per usual, and the sounds are those of a new NYC, fuelled by a new sort of post-industrial sensibility. Amato Y Mariana open with the tight beats and groove of "Queires Bailar", followed closely by the ominous compositions of the EBM-flavoured "Montgat" from The Sixteen Steps. On the flip, His Dirty Secrets bleeps out some morphed acid on "Structures", and "Another Stranger" from Further Reductions churns out a slow, mild-mannered house experiment with its roots clearly planted in the coldest of waves. Sick.

Review: In cahoots with the annual (not to mention excellent) Liverpool Disco Festival, celebrated editor and remixer Rahaan has been let loose on the West End Records catalogue. Happily, his new versions are rightfully respectful to the chosen disco and boogie classics with the Chicagoan simply adding choice effects here and there as well as some cranky old drum machine beats and occasional synthesizer flourishes. This is particularly evident on his raw but deep and slightly dubby take on Brenda Taylor's "You Can Have You Cake It Too", but also comes to the fore on the standout remix of Mahogany's spacey boogie jam "Ride on The Rhythm". String-laden disco bliss is provided via a bass-heavy re-arrangement of the Chuck Davis Orchestra's "Spirit of Sunshine", while Rahaan's Billy Nicholls rub is a high-octane, shirts-off treat.

Review: Luther Vandross originally wrote and recorded "My Body" in 1979, though his version was never released; instead, the song was re-recorded by Stephanie Mills and included on her 1983 album "Merciless". Here we finally get a chance to hear Luther belt it out himself, with Masters At Work man Louie Vega providing production and a dizzying number of remixes. There are two bumpin' and life-affirming "Soul House" mixes (the second replacing Vandross' lead vocal with some mazy Rhodes solos), a fluid and positive "Remix/Synth Bass Mix" that packs plenty of dancefloor energy, and warmer "EOL Mix" and "EOL Dub" versions that utilize a warm bass guitar part and some tasty chord progressions. Throw in a couple of edits and instrumentals and you have a suitably epic set of reworks.

JKriv takes on "Cosmic Dancer" and makes it into a slick disco-fied workout that adheres to the RNT vibe, while Dicky Trisco takes the track and makes it into a suitably interstellar strutter heavy on the synth lines. Then then the second slab of wax offers up a side each to the original versions, from the Afrobeat-indebted "Children Of The Sun" to the sweet and starry-eyed disco of "Cosmic Dancer".

  1. Leave

  3. Frogs
  4. Surpass
Review: Despite some FXHE releases containing playful artistic references to the films that undoubtedly referenced the titles, this Romancing The Stone double pack from Omar S is sadly lacking in any MS Paint renditions of the Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner 90s vehicle of the same name. It does however contain four more fine examples of the fact no one does it quite like Omar S. Lead track "Leave" sets the tone, as ripples of percussion emerge from a pool of simmering sonic emotion and embarks on a masterclass in slow build dancefloor revelation at breakneck pace. "Romancing The Stone" pulls from the same palette of anthemic Omar S productions as "Here's Your Trance, Now Dance" and "Psychotic Photosynthesis" as a lead array of synths, keys and chords weave with supple grace over crunchy drums - watch out for the track finishing abruptly. On the second 12", "Frogs" dovetails from a simple disco guitar loop into fucked up abstract acid techno territory with little prior warning whilst "Surpass" finds AOS ending with some anthemic maximal piano house.

Review: In 2016, Family Groove Records released a 12" of previously unheard 1979 demo recordings by Webster Station, a boogie-funk band from Dayton, Ohio whose studio efforts were initially binned by Warner Brothers for not being commercial enough. Demand for Family Groove's limited 12" of their recordings has remained high, so the label has decided to do a reissue. There's much to admire throughout, from the high-octane thrills of opener "Are You For Real" and the spacey warmth of the super-soulful "Can You Feel My Love", to the sugary sweetness of the Latin tinged ballad "Lady" and righteous closer "If You Feel Like Dancing", a killer combination of spacey synths, crunchy drums, urgent vocals and killer Clavinet lines.

The Atlanta based producer has had several cassette releases on his own DKA and CGI Records in addition to appearing for Glasgow's Clan Destine and London based Crimes Of The Future. The Rather Not LP for Dutch label Enfant Terrible sees Weiner throw down some convincingly '80s sounding alternative synth music, such as on tracks like "Leader's Choice" which is reminiscent of Geography era Front 242 or "I'm Not The Same" channelling Gary Numan circa The Pleasure Principle. A must have for retroverts, this great album that pushes the same territory as fellow North American analogue synth heads like Beau Wanzer, White Car or Streetwalker.

On the Noah's Day LP, Binh shows us that he's one of the best at merging classic electro sensibilities with minimal house; a current trend that's sweeping the Berlin underground at present. Fast tempo rhythm patterns reminiscent of early Detroit and UK techno come into the fold, as well as obvious nods to the classic reductionist sounds of DBX and Pantytec. This guy's one of the most exciting producers of the moment and this could well be one of the year's best releases.

Cherry picking the best elements of every genre (even ones of the future) Onyeabor's songwriting, coupled with some deliciously creative production techniques, still sound timeless now... The cosmic harmonies of "Heaven & Hell", the twitchy ESG-style punk-funk fusion of "Good Name", the calypso croons of "Crashes In Love", the list goes on. A true celebration of a unique man in African music, both this and Box Set 1 are fascinating documents.

Review: For Record Store Day 2018, UK downbeat legends Zero 7 present an exclusive collectors box set. The package contains seven 7"s, containing 14 tracks picked by Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker themselves. Featuring their acclaimed collaborations with Sia, Sophie Barker, Mozez, Jose Gonzalez and Martha Tilston among others. This is the first time some of these tracks have been made available on such format. Four tracks are taken from 2001's Simple Things LP, a further three are taken from their 2004 album When It Falls, four from The Garden (2006) and the final two come from the 2009 album Yeah Ghost. Artwork is by the band's original design collaborator (Julian House) and the sleeves are colour coded - placed into a cruciform overwrap sleeve with heavyweight vinyl.

Review: In 1988, Yasuaki Shimizu moved to Paris and collaborated with avant-garde artists such as David Cunningham of Flying Lizards (who is a special guest on this album) and Manny Elias of Tears for Fears. His second album Dementos conveyed a spirit of the times unique to Shimizu - who was at the epicentre of a world music movement that was extremely prosperous at that time. He brought his sister Mieko over from Japan and made her engage in hours of idle talk which is a constant throughout the LP and this eventually led him to conclude that human patterns of communication were indeed strange.

Review: The outspoken pair that are Paul Nickerson and Francis Englehardt ran the Dope Jams record store out of Brooklyn until the pressures of rising gentrification in the area forced them to sadly close their doors in 2012. Featured on this compilation across three 12"s are exclusive tracks; reissued or previously unreleased. Highlights weren't limited to: Scottish tech house legend Funk D'Void: who delivers the hi-tech soul of "Thank You (Slowly)", Chicago hardware maverick Hieroglyphic Being on the relentless jack of "Kilometer Zero" and D'Marc Cantu and Tadd Mullinix aka 2AM/FM with the tunnelling acid techno of "Kilometer Zero". Comes with a 32-page booklet full of photos, staff profiles and various anecdotes from over the years.

Review: For those who missed the memo, Occult Oriented Crime is one of several hundred alter egos occasionally used by Legowelt man Danny Wolfers. He first donned the pseudonym in 2014 for "The Occult Orientated Crime Album", a stunning but previously digital-only outing that has finally made it to vinyl for the very first time. From start to finish, the set prioritizes mood and atmosphere over club-focused rhythms, with Wolfers offering up a range of evocative, heavily electronic ambient soundscapes. While some cuts sound like Radiophonic Workshop doodles or Pete Namlook style immersive synth-scapes, others wrap delay-laden pianos around a whisper of electronic texture; throughout, Wolfers proves a masterful maker of meditative ambient bliss.

Review: Shogun duo Technicolour and Komatic cut their third album to deluxe wax comprising two white 12"s and two coloured 10"s... And it sounds every bit as good as it looks. Soulful yet varied in its scope and range, it's the most confident and clearest LP the duo have given us so far as it ranges from the darker, gnarlier minimal twists of "True Believer" to the more signature flourishing orchestration of cuts like "Weightless (feat Lucy Kitchen)" and naked introspection such as "The Nightfall (feat Jono McCleery)". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Potential drum & bass album of the year.

Review: There is little to say or introduce about both the Impulse label and master John Coltrane, apart from stating the obvious. Both label and artist have been cornerstones of jazz music for the better part of sixty years, and it's always a pleasure to have these timeless classics re-compiled and presented as a shimmering remaster of the original format. A Love Supreme is perhaps Coltrane's greatest moment - which that is a bold statement - and unlike the vintage Chicago house reissues that are lauded as being too 'clean' compared to their original formats, jazz is a music that must be listened to with crystal-clear detail and sound. That is precisely what you get here with this beautiful new version of the album, an edition which boasts longer cuts of the original, and that'll go down a storm with the Dingwalls heads. A classic - enough said.

Review: Originally Recorded live at Music Laboratories, New York, September 29, 1982 and eventually released 27 years later, William Basinski's 92982 receives a vinyl re-issue courtesy of the Temporary Residence label. Spread across two slabs of vinyl, the four separate parts to 92902 see Basinski teasing out ethereal, mesmerising loops from a reel to reel in all their decayed and degraded glory. It's all drenched in delay and reverb that works in the same tradition of his seminal LP, The Disintegration Loops . The truly haunting dark ambience of "92982.2" in particular is essential listening and a moment you won't forget, complete with eerie field recordings of NYC.

Review: Uncharted Territories is a three LP studio album by English jazz bassist Dave Holland, together with saxophonist Evan Parker, percussionist Ches Smith and pianist Craig Taborn. Avant-garde jazz for the most part, they present a series of deep, multi-layered conversations between one another - some of whom were collaborating for the first time. The origin of these new, free improvisation sessions goes back to Holland's pre-New York days and his association with Parker - when they played together in Spontaneous Music Ensemble.

Review: Jon Thor Birgisson (Sigur Ros) and his partner Alex Somers make brain cleansing and heavenly ambient as Jonsi & Alex. 10 years ago they put out cult classic "Riceboy Sleeps" and to mark the anniversary the whole album has been lovingly remastered across six slabs of wax. Taking the time to do nothing but sit back and sink deep into this album is a pleasure you will thank yourself for: its pastoral synths slowly wash over you while muted pads gently unfold, evolve and evaporate as barely-there voices from the Kopavogsdaetur Choir come in and out of focus next to smeared strings from Icelandic quartet Amiina. Perfection.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Review: Often cited as the sort of album that took hip hop in credible new directions and opened it up to a broader audience who had previously been put off by rap and all its streetwise slang and urban references, Hieroglyphics' "3rd Eye Vision" landed in 1998. It has been cited as one of the best indie hop hip albums of all time thanks to its lavish instrumentation and stellar production from Domino, with contributions from A-Plus, Opio, Del and Casual. Each of the 20 tracks tell their own stories but mesh them together and it's a coherent album overall that proves going your own way, away from the majors can be a scary but rewarding move.

Review: ** REPRESS ** Italians Do It Better continues with their deluxe reissue pledge for 2010 delivering the definitive edition of Chromatics classic 2007 album Night Drive. For a multiplicity of reasons (most notably misplaced master tapes) the version that has gained a million column inches in the past three years was never meant to be heard, an incomplete demo version burned to hand out at tours. Having located the masters some 18 months later, Simonetti and co do the smart thing in presenting this deluxe edition, replete with the five tracks missing from the demo CD and fully remastered. Thus Johnny Jewel's original cinematic vision is presented in its full glory seeping in analogue warmth. Enough words have been dedicated to the tracks that filled the 2007 demo version that it seems redundant to spill any more ink on the matter though the Kate Bush cover does sound delicious! The five extra tracks make this a more than worthy purchase, from the poignant piano heartbeat of "Shining Violence" to the final departure via the Carpenter esque synth dynamics of "Accelerator".

Review: Archeo trumps once again with a stunning reissue of Riccardo Giagni's highly desirable 1988 masterpiece "Kaunis Maa". It's a subtle, refined body of work that places Giagni's delicate guitar refrains front and centre, with a hazy mist of atmospheric synth pads drifting in the middle distance. The title track is especially sublime, folding dreamy exotica tones into the pastoral sound palette with stunning results. Alongside the six original pieces, Archeo have also commissioned a special, Balearically charged remix from Claremont 56 artist Simon Peter.

Review: Since debuting as Grouper back in 2005, Liz Harris has delivered a swathe of experimentalist albums that explore almost every aspect of ambient and drone music. Here she launches a new project, Nivhek, via an expansive double-album of sparse, atmospheric compositions that tend towards the epic. Really, it's two albums in one. The first slab of wax is entitled "After Its Own Death" and boasts a two-part, non-stop suite of tracks built around echoing choral vocals, dark electronics and blissful bells. It's alternately melancholic, blissful and grippingly intense. In contrast, "Walking In A Spiral Towards The House", the piece stretched across both sides of the second record, is breathtakingly beautiful - a meandering, soft focus trip through chiming, reverb-laden motifs and gentle music box melodies.

Review: Hiroshima-based producer Paul T Kirk is hardly prolific, but has nevertheless managed to release a string of fine albums over the last 14 years. Short Fuse is his first set for alt.vinyl and sees him expand on the dusty, otherworldly industrial, illbient and dark IDM experiments of his 2015 full-length, Sometime, Never. Kirk is a talented sound designer, capable of crafting fascinating, fully-formed tracks that rise above a sound soup built on manipulated field recordings, shortwave radio chatter and crackling electronic distortion. It's a formula that not only guarantees atmospheric listening, but also a string of fine tracks that veer from fuzzy industrial intensity to ghostly ambient bliss.

Review: For a long time Giuseppe 'Neel' Tillieci has been known best for his supreme mastering skills for labels such as Morphine, Prologue and Northern Electronics and as the other force behind the revered Voices From The Lake project with Donato Dozzy. The Italian artist now debuts solo with the album Phobos, a completely ambient work of earthly sound design and alien atmospheres in a 45-minute journey laced with otherworldly Martian motifs. Neel's defining opus comes through John Elliot's Spectrum Spools, closely following the lauded reissue of The Aquaplano Sessions, and it's a wholly rewarding body of work best enjoyed in full in the one sitting.

Review: Not to get all emotional and stuff but, as some of you may already know, Jazz Semai is officially the first jazz album to get recorded in Turkey. The 1978 juggernaut is a collector's item, seemingly impossible to find in its original format, so it's kind of a big deal that Rainbow 45 have managed to find the rights and press up some new vinyl copies for us all - a true xmas present! The infamous Erol Pakcan leads on drums, Tuna Otenel resides all over the pianos, and Kudret Oztoprak delivers the bass and extra percussive wonder. Together, these three conjured what is a beautifully diverse and playful jazz LP, full of twists and corners, subtle Turkish influences, but also plenty of sounds and styles adopted from the American school of thought. All in all, it's a special and important album, both musically, historically, and politically. Don't miss it.

Review: Sth. Notional was a short-lived project that manifested in one album back in 1992, originally released on Japanese label Zero Corporation. Yawn Yawn Yawn focused primarily on various Balearic-friendly mixes of the title track and some other scattered pieces, and now they've received a much-needed spruce up from Archeo Recordings. The "Dream... Another Reality" versions of "Yawn Yawn Yawn" are laid back to the extreme, revolving around delicate instrumentation and occasional threads of speech and singing. There's a mellow beat behind the "G-Tar Cannyon Mix," and the "Thankful Mix" brings a weightier groove to the table. With the other tracks adding to this utterly smooth, early 90s shake, and spread across three discs, this is the holy grail reissue collectors have been waiting for.
