Review: Mississippi have unearthed a lost classic from what is widely considered Ethiopia's 'golden age' of music before an authoritarian crackdown on arts and culture in the 70s. Aselefech Ashine and Getenesh Kebret perform a captivating duet over the distinctive sound of Ethic jazz - fans of Mulatu Astatke will instantly find themselves on familiar ground here, but it's the singers' voices which truly shine. While Beauties was a hit upon release, it was soon quashed by the Derg regime, and has since been out of print. It's been carefully remastered and presented with its stunning artwork intact - a true gem for anyone enthralled with the unique sound incubated in Ethiopia in the mid-20th Century.

Review: Balearic DJs Chris Coco and George Solar have been making tunes together fora couple of years after first meeting at Ibiza Sonica radio. They soon hit it off in person and in the studio, so now we get their first album, Island Vibrations. Solar is an accomplished percussionist so he and Chris made a list of rhythms around which to loosely build each track with some of those used including Nyabinghi, Guaguanco, One Drop and Algaroba. Most were record in Ibiza with added bass from Fly and lots of organic synth work embellishing each one into this lush collection of fresh downtempo and chill out sounds.

Known for their outlandish, non-politically correct, and gritty lyrics, they owe much of this influence to their former memberhip of New York posse The LoLifes, founded by Thirstin Howl III. Gunz Knivez & Nunchuckz carries out what the title implies; Clever One's lyrical skills and Giallo Point's grimy production combine to produce a cinematic, action-packed sound, be that via the sinister mover 'Vizable Ghost Gunz' or the hilarious, film-referencing 'Lo'ceanz 11'. Review: Respected UK jazz keyboardist Greg Foat and ambient legend Gigi Masin started piecing together the music for Dolphin during the lockdown years of 2021, developing their collaborative album online before committing to final recording sessions when they were able to convene at the Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle Of Wight. As you might well expected, there's a sumptuous, refined quality to the music the two have conjured up on this release for Strut, taking in mellow jazz and ambient with elevated musicality at the core. With additional instrumental contributions from the likes of Mosesy Boyd, Siobhan Cosgrove and Tom Herbert, it's a richly satisfying listen from beginning to end.

Review: You may well have spotted UK jazz keyboardist recording for the likes of Athens Of The North, Jazzman and Strut in recent times, and it's the latter label he returns to for this luxurious collaboration with Venetian ambient legend Gigi Masin. Initially conceived during those blurry days of 2021 when life felt very different, the album was developed remotely before culminating in some recording sessions in the stunning surrounds of Chale Abbey on the Isle Of Wight. Attending those sessions were the additional talents of Moses Boyd on drums, Tom Herbert on bass and Siobhan Cosgrove on flute, who all add additional sparkle to this stunning set of pieces to bring a little elegant magic into any situation. This special clear vinyl edition won't hang around for long, so you'd best be quick acquiring it.

Review: Gabin (pronounced gae'baen) is the nu-jazz duo Filippo Clary and Max Bottini. The Italian pair debuted in 2002 with their self-titled album and followed it up with four more as well as nine singles. Remarkably, their music has appeared on over 200 different combinations, such is its appeal. The debut album now gets a latest reissue as the acid jazz, jazz dance, downtempo and house sounds are still as relevant now as they ever were. The singing in French and Spanish adds a real European feel to this with its smooth beats and Mediterranean beach party vibes. A true classic.

Review: Peter Gabriel’s return to the limelight is demarcated by i/o, the latest 12-track album on which he reasserts his voice and compositional skill, delivering a profound and life-affirming new message. Embracing a Wattsian speck-of-dust existential theme, lead cuts like the title track turn the thought of "I’m just a part of everything” into a motif, while also touching on themes of injustice, surveillance and the roots of terrorism. But While reflective, the mood is never despondent; i/o is musically adventurous, often joyous and ultimately full of hope, topped off as it is, by the rousingly optimistic closing song, 'Live and Let Live’. Note that this is the Bright Side Mix of the album: i/o is not simply a collection of a dozen songs. Review: National Album Day is of course all about reminding music lovers of the joys of a proper good full-length. Not collections of singles, not various versions of the same tune, but a record that was designed to be played from front to back in one sitting. It's something of an old school idea these days but one that always warrants revisiting. Here it's Gabrielle's Rise that gets special attention. The title track was of course one of the English singer's biggest hits and the album came in 1999. It was a huge commercial success and spent three weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, achieving quadruple Platinum status.

Review: Soulful pop trio Gabriels hail from LA and the UK and make gospel-tinged electronic music that takes you to a higher plane. After some epic singles and a recent standout performance at Glastonbury which got everyone talking - not least because of the magnificent outfits of the lead singer - they have finally put together a debut album. The first part was widely acclaimed and this seance part is no different. Review: Diamanda Galas's The Divine Punishment was the first album in her Masque of the Red Death trilogy and is a stark, confrontational record that was produced in response to the AIDs epidemic. On the same day it was first released back in 1986, the Supreme Court criminalized consensual sex between men at a time when then epidemic was truly taking hold. Galas uses her voice both to deliver oration taken from the Old Testament as well represent AIDS and its ill effects. Dark analogue synth drones by Dave Hunt and haunting atmospheres complete this most brilliantly bleak put poignant work.

Review: Greek-American legend Diamanda Galas conjours up an ode to a Medieval plague sanctuary in Hanover on her latest brilliantly bizarre new album Broken Gargoyles. The sounds are as unsettling as the cover and were made during the pandemic - hence the references to the quarantine for plague victims. It's a nightmarish mix of synths and spoken words, screeching vocals and distant vowels that very much puts you in the middle a room full of the mentally and physically ill, desperately looking for a way out that isn't there.

Review: Galcher Lustwerk has put together a collection of 10 ambient cuts here that he wrote to score a film by Josh Kline, a fine artist whose solo exhibition 'Project for a New American Century' recently opened at the Whitey Museum of American Art in New York. It is a dystopic science fiction movie that details what happens after the climate crisis really takes hold. The music is an esoteric mix of free jazz, drones and bleeped-out ambient that is alive with busy, fizzing frequencies. It's a dense, textural brew that collides synth and sax sounds into a new sort of tribute to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner score.

Review: Medway's garage rock king Allan Crockford has credits flittering all the way back to the 80's including the likes of The Prisoners, Billy Childish's Thee Headcoats, The Solarflares, and even the OG line-up of the James Taylor Quartet, to name but a handful. Keeping sharp and busy, however, The Galileo 7 serves as his own passion project; melding 60s mod-beat garage rock with jangling psychedelic pop, leading to a sonic bickering between anthemic hooks and fuzzed out, twinkling guitar lines.
