Review: Heads On Platters is the third instalment in a trilogy of vinyl records that delves into the intersectionality of queer pleasure and the pandemic. Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the series, titled Undetectable: Queer Pleasure and Pandemic, amplifies voices on queer sexualities, chemsex practices, and emerging cultural responses amidst rising global LGBTQ+ challenges. Through exploring themes of public sex and evolving queer cultural expressions, the project confronts pervasive homophobia, transphobia, and violence. Review: The House Of Love was the name of both a British indie band and that of their debut album. Notably part of the C86 scene in the late 1980s - a catch-all term to describe a wave of bands at the time making jangly indie with a distinctive power-pop song structure, and which was sadly maligned after a dismissal by massively influential radio DJ John Peel - the band's sound fit well into the category and is a suitable precursor for an undeniably British sound which still resounds today, whether exemplified by its lead track 'Christine' or follow-ups 'Shine On' or 'Destroy The Heart'. The reissue is pressed on vinyl for the first time since 1989.

Review: House Of Love's classic album Babe Rainbow gets a full reissue that wholly replicates the original version from 1992 on Fontana. The band initially formed in 1986 in South London and features vocalist Guy Chadwick, lead guitarist Terry Bickers, bassist Chris Groothuizen and drummer Pete Evans. Early on they were inspired by The Jesus And Mary Chain and soon found critical acclaim and commercial success with their self-titled debut becoming an instant indie-disco hit. Babe Rainbow came after lots of heavy touring and promotion saw Bickers leave the group to form Levitation and be replaced by Simon Walker. It features notable singles such as 'The Girl With The Loneliest Eyes' and live favourite 'Crush Me.'

Review: The Voice, as she was affectionately known, is having plenty of her greatest albums all reissued this year and that is never going to be bad news. Whitney Houston's range, emotion and heartfelt delivery style is surely never going to be bettered and even by her own standards she was in superlative form on I'm Your Baby Tonight, her third studio album back in 1990. At this stage she was already one of the most successful recording artists in history but didn't let up with singles including the title track, and 'We Didn't Know', a duet with Stevie Wonder, both proving massive.

Review: It would be easy to think of Whitney as the first album from one of R&B's all-time greatest icons, but in fact Whitney Houston released a self-titled album just two years earlier in 1985. Either way, it was with this light beam of pop perfection that Houston truly cemented her reputation as a global superstar, and it's not hard to understand why. The hits just spill out of this record, from 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) and 'Love Will Save The Day' to 'So Emotional' and 'For The Love Of You'. The songwriting is stellar, but of course it's Houston's impassioned, full-bodied vocal which makes these the perennial hits they are - it's an all-time classic, need we say more?

Review: .Hollywood heavyweight James Newton Howard has turned his hand to a wide variety of movie soundtrack styles in his tenure as one of the go-to names for Hollywood scores. Allow us a moment to reel off the names, or a few of them at least: Pretty Woman, The Fugitive, Space Jam, The Sixth Sense - a list that could go on, and on, but you get the point. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sits at the more pomp and ceremony-filled end of things, epic classical overtures that invoke a sense of adventure, overcoming adversity, mild peril and inner strength. Even when heard without the visual accompaniment of the film itself you can't get away from those feelings, making for a rousing and compelling listening experience.

Review: .The critical jury has certainly been out on Ben Howard's latest slice of soft electronic pop-dance-indie business, some slapping an Album of the Week label on it, others referring to it as "a little dull". Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder, or in this case the ear, and from where we're sitting Is It? certainly is a thing of exceptional beauty. Indeed, if there was a major criticism here it would be the most 21st Century, mind-ruined-by-tidal-waves-of-wireless-information criticism imaginable. Howard clearly expects us to listen and listen good, with such delicate tracks easily at risk of slipping into the background. Turn it up, then, and feel the full, subtle power of what's here - 1980s hued sophisticated lushness, lo-fi downtempo curveballs, postmodern art pop. Ace.

Review: The 90s East Coast house scene owes a real debt to John Howard. He was a pioneer of the era who led the way with his mix of groove, soul, jazzy rhythms and fresh breaks. His best work has become the subject of a new series of reissues from Repeat who kicked off with his Scianloic 12" and now drop this hand-stamped double 12". Shessions is packed to the brim with innovative early house grooves that are up there with your favourite artists from Chicago and Detroit - or at least should be. Review: This recorded autobiography of Catherine Howe, age 20, briefly appeared in 1971. Too young for memoirs, most artists have barely established any sort of musical competence by the age of legal adulthood, let alone compositions matching the maturity and complexity of Howe's. What A Beautiful Place, however, is a prodigious effort wrought from the melancholy ruminations of post-adolescence. The album's twelve songs unfold like a classic bildungsroman, beginning in the smoke-stained industrial county of Yorkshire, transformed by the electrified creative landscape of mid-century London, and retiring to the warm pastoral bliss of the county of Dorset on England's southern coast. Produced by noted jazz pianist Bobby Scott, the LP - oft-mistaken for a concept album - was available for only a month in the summer of 1971, disappearing after Reflection Records' shuttering in 1971.

Review: Howlin Wolf's contributions to the development of blues culture are vast, just like his back catalogue, but this classic compilation is a great place to start in understanding the impact he had as he helped usher in the electric Chicago blues era. Originally released in 1962, Howling Wolf Sings The Blues gathered together eight songs originally recorded for Modern Records in the early 50s as well as further instrumentals by Joe Hill Louis. It's a classic era for a true blues legend, right up there with his fabled Chess sessions recorded a few years later.
