Review: Nature documentary series The Living Planet very much captured the imagination of Raoul Bjorkenheim back in 1986. It featured erupting volcanoes and plumes of molten lava and some of that drama and energy is captured in this fine jazz album which now gets a new extended reissue. Bjorkenheim studied at the Helsinki Conservatory for a year and the Berklee College of Music in Boston for three years and worked with composer and drummer Edward 'Eetu' Vesala. For this album, he played with reed virtuosos Jorma Tapio and Tapani Rinne, bassist Sampo Lassila and drummers Michel Lambert and Heikki 'Lefty' Lehto. It is a hot and raw record that contains an album's worth of previously unheard material.

Review: It is always a joy to hear from the Music For Dreams label. Not only is it a musically interesting outlet but also one that digs deep into plenty of fascinating different scenes. And this is one such case as the project is centered around 99-year-old Iboja Wandall-Holm who sings about memories from her childhood growing up in Eastern Europe. The record plays out like a musical encounter where the songs are worked into magical forms by Danish musician Mikkel Hess and other members of his Hess Is More band with extra collaborative input from label head and producer Kenneth Bager.

Review: The Jahari Massamba Unit is an all new jazz project from the legendary Madlib and Karriem Riggins. Madlib is responsible for all the instrumentals bar the drums, which Riggins takes care of, and both bring a wealth of jazz and hip hop experience and knowledge to the collaboration. The sounds are best described as spiritual jazz, or as Madlib calls it 'Black classical music', and are steeped in history while also offering up a vision of the future. There are moments of abstract sun worshiping, lush broken beat grooves with exquisite solos and more prickly pieces. This sure is another vital entry into the ever excellent discography of Madlib.

It drew together all their finest moments from the proceeding decade but gets the full reissue treatment here with limited numbered gatefold 180 gram and coloured wax. The Belgian rock band hail from Antwerp and in their heyday mixed up alt-rock, post-grunge and folk rock on a series of albums that went gold and platinum in various countries around the world. This collection has all the big, stadium-sized tunes as well as the more quiet moments of introspective calm. It's a great reminder of a band that had a big impact at the turn of the millennium.

Review: The second solo releases from Edward Ka-Spel to appear on the Lumberton Trading Company label offers eight spectacularly original compositions from the outsider artist. These are tracks that bore their way into the heart and mind through startlingly personal moods and meanings. The atmosphere is often tense, and, when it's not, 'surreal' is the word that springs to mind - albeit more unusual hallucination than comical experiment. 'Platform 5' might be the best example of how unnerving things can get, the low, rumbling synth bassline underpinning spoken word, distant, almost inaudible harmonic refrain and eerie chorus. 'No Show Tomorrow' asks "what if they had a war and nobody showed up' to seemingly disconnected tones, notes and noises. 'They Seek Her Here' ups the tempo with a synth-wave-breaks trip through dystopian spaces.

Review: Kabala Records label head Manuel Kabala is back on his own imprint with a new record that leads you into intriguing alternative dimensions. It follows on from his well-received debut Polaris as he further explores spirit, mind, jazz, blues, frenzied rhythm and electric invention. Some tracks are airy and shuffling broken beat pieces like 'Dancing In The Morning' with its lush cosmic chords, others are late night and zoned out cuts like 'Japanese Subway' and the likes of 'Colorful Samba' does just what it says in the title. Review: While they are those who moved on from Kaiser Chiefs the mere moment the hype dissipated around their iconic 2005 debut Employment; the committed faithful have stuck by through six more eclectic full-lengths, now ultimately leading to the aptly titled Kaiser Chiefs' Easy Eighth Album. Produced by Amir Amor (formerly of Rudimental), and boasting co-writing credits from Chic's own disco legend Nile Rodgers on 'Feeling Alright', the material here feels less pre-occupied with where the Chiefs currently reside within the zeitgeist of modern indie-rock, and instead prioritises hooks, wit and instantaneous composition to deliver some of their tightest earworm bangers to date. Ten cuts of joyous, life-affirming, whimsical mayhem, with the horn-centric throwback 'The Job Centre Shuffle' casting attentive ears back to a time where landfill indie wasn't a death knell or even a coined term.

It is her first record sung primarily in Spanish which does nothing at all to detract from the beauty of her delivery. Guests such as PartyNextDoor, Nasty and Cortez add their own flavours but the overriding vibe of this one is bright, melodic bedroom pop, r&b and reggaeton with funky breaks and trippy jazz stylings. Love is often in the air throughout the record which often soars to blue skies and brings the rays direct to your face.

Review: Kali Uchis is a globally renowned Columbian r&b and pop songstress who first rose to fame due to her frequent collaborations with alternative hip-hop wunderkind Tyler, the Creator. Review: Ariel Kalma is a musical outsider, a visionary who combined a diverse world of sound into his own unique signature. Jazz, weird ethnic instrumentals, warm electronics, folk, spoken word and avant soul all feature in his compelling oeuvre and the visionary French musician sure had a large one. French Archives Vol III: 1964-1989 is another superb collection of material from it that comes in a lovely four LP box set with booklet and download code. It gets from astral wonderment on 'Space Pillars' to layers of harmonic bells, tropical flutes, harmoniums and drones of light on 'Muse Mirroir' with plenty in between.

Renowned for his ability to improvise and create stunning, beautiful, minimalist compositions on the fly, while this is hard to truly capture on record, Forest of Tines does its best. With a subtitle referencing the instrument Kalman is perhaps most associated with, the work is deeply textured and yet deceptively bare, with layers slowly revealing themselves before dissipating into the ether. A sonic adventure that lures us in with calm, organic movements set against tones that are more obviously the result of man and machine, timelessness meeting modernity in these exquisite forms, like stories of the ancients told through contemporary musical language.

Review: Spanning no less than 131 volumes in print, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has understandably found cult status among fans of Manga worldwide. Running from 1987 to present day, the most recent instalments began serialisation in 2023. Presumably looking to make the most of the first new chapters since 2012, Sony has opted to re-release the score to part five, Golden Wind, which landed in 2001 and was adapted into anime form. Setting the scene in Naples, Italy, the plot involves gangsters, drug dealers who specifically target kids, and a plot to kill the protagonist's daughter. Steeped in Japanese animated movie score traditions, the accompanying music by celebrated composer Kanno Yugo is at times tense, in other moments playful, often fantastic, regularly bizarre, and resolutely eccentric.

Review: Karlowy Vary are rather legendary amongst alternative and new wave fans. They formed in Zagreb, Croatia and played widely across the former Yugoslavia throughout the 80s. They had a rather rotating line-up of musicians and one replacement frontman Milan Manojlovi?-Mance was often prone to inventing all new lyrics live on stage. This reissue is of their best album, La Femme, which is a potent and fresh now almost half a decade on as it was back in the 80s. Katalyst operate as a communal endeavour in the tradition of Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan People's Arkestra, with all members pooling their compositions and ideas and helping each other grow as artists. Across four sides of vinyl she brings us everything from totally wigged out ambient sounds to lively, bubbling electronica and sub bass-enhanced rhythmic assaults. Her world is a bewildering, sometimes disorientating one at times, downright beautiful at others, but one in which you'll want to hang around in for more than a little while.

Review: A concept album in the truest sense, not that you'd necessarily assume that from the outset, Kate NV has quite literally thrown her toys out of the pram for this one. Taking the bits and pieces, sounds and sonics from her 2020 album, Room For The Moon, Wow feels like she might have scattered the parts on the carpet like an eager child emptying a chest of fun they've not opened in years, then started to see what might be made anew from those once-familiar elements.
Fittingly, the result of that approach is very, very fun, but also pretty serious. There's plenty of innovation at work here - leftfield, alternative electronica messing around with assumptions we make about structure and order, at times almost sounding like a cut and paste project. In other moments, we step from staccato rhythms and percussion into rich brass movements. Quite unlike a lot you'll buy this week.

It was recorded originally in New York and now gets a reissue form the hard working Mr Bongo crew. It is a record that has picked dup cult status over the years for those looking for samples and has been pillaged by everyone from Diamond D, Puff Daddy, and Kool G Rap. Review: Blackmarket Seminar was entirely produced by the American beat making master Madlib with guests features from the man himself as well as MED, Wildchild, Declaime (Dudley Perkins) and Oh No. It first came in 1996, but was digitally remastered in 2016 which is the version that is now pressed to wax. It is a dark and raw record that took hip hop into new territory back in the mid-nineties and features a number of skits detailing a mysterious character's search for a black market. What is also for sure, is that the beats hit hard here and cast a looming but alluring shadow.

Review: Breakout neo soul vocalist Kehlani first turned heads with her 2020 album It Was Good Until It Wasn't, then backed up that promise with her more intimate follow-up, Blue Water Road, earlier this year. The record now comes on nice clear vinyl and the US artist herself describes it an emotional journey as well as "a sexual journey, and a spiritual journey," she says the album is akin to a glass house in that it is "light, transparent, and the sun is shining through it." We agree - the production is silky, sweeping, sonorous, the vocal work just as delightfully liquid and seductive as she goes from intimate lows to empowering highs.

Review: The eighth full-length from Canadian noise-rock indebted industrial hardcore behemoths, KEN Mode, is arguably one of their most visceral offerings to date. Taking influence from the likes of Nine Inch Nails and Einsturzende Neubauten, as well as exuding more sonically familiar inspiration from Botch and Converge; 'Null', is a masterclass in combining the ugliest aspects of disparate forms of aggressive styles to conjure a caustic, audible assault. In the four long years since its predecessor, 'Loved', the world has become a much uglier, unfriendly place, and these malevolent, crushing pieces reflect this with arresting specificity.

Review: Keno aka David Hanke's albums are always worth hearing. There was his fantastic 2018 debut Around The Corner, then a collab with Los Angeles-based musician Tristan de Liege in 2020 and now comes Out Past The Current. It is made up of some of his top recent remixes as well a new and exclusive tunes that show off the producer's love of ambient and downtempo. It's a style developed over the last 20 years, but over that time has grown with ever more lush instrumentations, complex songwriting and distinctive drum programming. Those who like Bonobo will find lots to love here.

Review: London might be seen as one of the hottest places for new, urban jazz sounds, but this album Second Light from Kepler Is Free shows that Greece also has its own vibrant scene. Their debut album was a quickly sold out success and now the jazz rock ensemble is back with more expansive work that traverses the 60s, 70s, soul jazz, hip hop and experimental in all new ways. The band was founded in 2018 and though all members are relatively young, they show their maturity here with more widescreen and entrancing sounds that come in collaboration with LEX, one of Greece's best-known rappers.

Review: Despite their obvious love of Japanese culture, Kero Kero Bonito were formed in Bromley, South London, although vocalist Sarah Midori Perry is pretty adept at switching from English to Japanese with her half rapping, half sung style. Intro Bonito was first released in 2013 in mixtape form and introduced the trio - Perry plus multi-instrumentalists Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled - to the world. Influenced by JPop and 8bit computer game theme music as well as hip-hop and electronica, theirs is a rich and wonderful aesthetic with a challenging, Marmite effect, but whether you like it or loathe it, the songwriting is so strong and original you'll almost certainly find yourself singing it sometime next week.

Review: Kettel's My Dogan album was a real landmark when it was released 15 years ago. Amazingly it has never before been on vinyl, but thankfully Lapsus now right that wrong with this special green marbled version. Dutch artist, Reimer Eising, aka Kettel, has long been a key player int he IDM and brain dance scene and this album proves why. It is one of his most enduring works on the Sending Orbslabel and even now sound fresh, innovative and original. His complex rhythms dance delicate dances, the brain cleaning synths burrow dee into your mind and the reflective melodies sound straight from heaven.

Review: It was in 1998 that pioneering Canadian musician levin Key released his solo debut Music For Cats. Artoffact Records reissued it on vinyl back in 2014 and now they do so again but this time on gatefold pink and blue splattered vinyl double album. It's a unique work that blends classical, glitch, and noise-driven pieces, featuring collaborations with artists like Dwayne Goettel, Genesis P.Orridge, Philth, and Mark Spybey. 'Music Fur Cats' showcases Key's songwriting depth, followed by 'Wind On Small Paws' with its electro-industrial sci-fi vibe. 'Meteorite' offers glitchy beats. Familiar tracks like 'Bird', 'Blotter', and 'Greenhouse Gasses' provide accessible listening, albeit experimental. 'Music For Cats' is gritty and against the grain, yet melodic. While not mainstream, it's an intriguing, well-crafted release, appealing to experimental electronic enthusiasts and completists alike.

Review: Khalab's new album Layers comes on his own Hyperjazz Records and signifies a culmination of sorts. His musical journey started back in 2015 with this first EP on Black Acre Records and has then evolved through Afro-future sounds like his Black Noise 2084 album through On The Corner Records in 2018. His development has continued at pace after that and this record shows how across a series of deeply musical and spiritual tracks full of rich layers, jazz freedom and electronic rhythms. Review: Vibraphonist Khan Jamal has made many fine albums over the years, though few are quite as revered within the jazz scene as Infinity, a self-released set from 1984 that has been near impossible to find for years. While Jamal's fluid and attractive vibraphone playing is given an airing throughout the album, it never dominates the sound space, with the storied members of his backing sextet - including scene legends Byard Lancaster (alto sax, flute) and drummer Sunny Murray - all being given a chance to shine. Musically, it sits somewhere between spiritual jazz, jazz-funk and Latin jazz, with hectic dancefloor numbers (see the superb 'The Angry Young Man') being joined by a wealth of deeper, more laidback compositions.

Review: Canada may not shout as loud as the US, UK or Germany when it comes to electronic music, with the exception of Richie Hawtin perhaps, albeit frequently assumed he's American, and is actually part-British. Nevertheless, the larger North American state has a truly remarkable legacy in house, techno, ambient, and synth-y odds and sods.
It's proof the apple never falls far from the tree, given proximity to some of the bonafide birthplaces of those sounds - Chicago and Detroit. Edmonton's Khotin is indicative of the difficult to define tones that emanate from the Maple Leaf and its people. So much texture, pouring with emotion, and fundamentally born of new ideas, or at least different ways of thinking. Release Spirit, his third album on Michigan's Ghostly International, is thoughtful, intelligent, downtempo electronic stuff, crafted with love and attention to detail.

The remix album is probably pretty hard to crack in terms of putting it together. On the one hand, you want a broad selection of producers to take the work and make it new again. But there's also a very real risk of winding up with a bunch of random tracks with no real coherent thread to ensure the LP is actually going to get enough people buying to warrant engineering, mastering, and pressing costs.
Khruangbin have certainly cracked it with these takes on tracks from their most recent and perhaps most lush long form outing to date. We have sophisticated micro house, percussive slo-mo disco, slick-to-the-touch downbeat grooves and surrealist pop, all of which work both individually and together, the result being a record that not only knows its own mind, it can easily convince others, too.

Review: Kid 'n Play's 1988 album finds them at their very best. 2 Hype was the US duo's debut in October 1988 on Select Records and it mixed up the golden era styles of the day with new jack swing. Production was handled by Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor and the Invincibles and the album managed to chart with three different singles. The witty bars are entertaining from front to back and the high, playful energy of the suds throughout make this a really fun listen even now decades on.

Demonstrating the artist's bold sidestep into cloud rap (as opposed to stark classics like 'Day N Nite'), this album contains slow-chugging dreamers like 'Mr. Solo Dolo III' and playful gut-bouncers a-la 'Tequila Shots', spanning collabs with Trippie Redd, Skepta, Pop Smoke and folk pop sensation Phoebe Bridgers. For those invested in Kudi's artistic progression, this is a concept album finding the rapper in an internal struggle against his evil alter-ego, Mr. Rager - whether Cudi prevails is up to the listener's interpretation.
