Soul
The Natural Soul Brothers Ltd - "Cement Plaster & Gold" (3:57)
The Four Thoughts - "Kisses & Roses" (2:39)
Review: Soul Direction's 19th outing might be their best to date. It is some top work from The Natural Soul Brothers Ltd that was originally recorded in Philly for the Wally-O Production stable back in 1970. It never got released after originally being laid down back then and that's a shame because it has plenty of great talent on display. The soul grooves are defined by a haunting sound and lingering vocals that make for a mellow but involving track. On the flip, there is more rambunctious energy, prickly drum rhythms and free-form guitar riffs next to a big vocal.

Innaghetto (5:16)
Ozymandias (live) (6:27)
Review: Nephews of Phela debuted in 2005 with 'Mulah 2' but haven't done anything that we can find since. This mysterious outfit have now resurfaced with this vinyl-only limited edition 12" of fascinating electronic Afro sounds that are hypnotising and intoxicating. 'Innaghetto' opens with some hefty percussion over corrugated basslines and raw slapping hits. It's got a playful flute adding a little light to the otherwise mood vibes. 'Ozymandias' is a lively tune with twisted funk sounds and hints of Ethiopia in the magical melodies that lead you late into the night.

Authentic (6:05)
Organic (4:55)

Mechanic (4:38)
Review: We've extensively covered the work of Greek electronic music project Neural Network for a long time now, thanks to their compelling fusion of experimental techno and industrial music with themes of malevolent AI and/or cyborg takeover. Mostly active during the 1990s, the trio were instrumental in bringing robotic ideas to EU techno. This reissue of 'Cybernetics' is a big curio, with four new alternate takes on classic neuromantic cuts including 'Authentic' and 'Mechanic'. For those who like to sprinkle a bit of dystopianism into their DJ sets, this EP littered with sinister vocal samples scraped from future-facing TV documentaries abut cyborgs.

Your House Is Yours (11:53)
Your House Is Yours (part II & III Simultaneously) (11:50)
Feel Feel Feel (16:39)
Invasion Of The Touchy Feelies (11:48)
Review: .Nimbus Quartet were also known as Moral and featured producers Dave Stevens and Woody McBride cooking up their own slick fusion acid, techno and house. Their 'Chunkafunk EP' from 1995 is one other best and it has now been newly remastered for this nice heavyweight reissue on Sounds. 'Your House Is Yours' is a heavyweight bumper with emotive vocal stabs and off-grid chords bringing the rawness. Then comes part II & III Simultaneously in a more late night and mysterious track defined by its whimsical pads. The epic 16 minute workout that is 'Feel Feel Feel' is high speed cosmic tech house and 'Invasion Of The Touchy Feelies' is a masterful mix of gritty tech loops and hard-edge drum funk.

Deception Island (5:25)

Nachtgang (4:39)
Tulips (5:27)
Review: Formerly known as Non-Human Persons, NNHMN (or Non-Human) are a duo from Berlin who sound every bit like stereotypes of synth-twiddling tag teams from the German capital. Which is no disrespect, more to celebrate how long the city has been known for embracing noises plucked straight from the future, and then combining those with mechanical hyper-emotion. Androids or not, on Deception Island Part 1 NNHMN show off deft skills at creating strangely sensual and sexual soundscapes from plugged-in things, offering up five stand out tunes that straddle club scenes and twisted romances, or obsessions, each perfectly poised to move bodies while also enveloping us in mysterious atmospheres thick enough to drown in. It's dark, (predominantly) driving, epic and alluring - the art of sinister seduction, to put all that another way.

Walk In Romance (3:03)
Dreams On Hold (3:30)
Review: NT is Nail aka Neil Holliday, one half of Bent and a master of UK tech house. But here he shows a different side across six majestically Balearic groovers. That draw on everything he has done before to send you out to sea on gentle waves of shining synth goodness, downtempo bliss and dreamy, chubby, soft focus drums. 'Beside Boa Linn' is a soothing summer sound to kick off then 'Going Out To Feel It' is a spiritual house cut for sundown, and 'Don't Hide Away' is slow motion disco brilliance. The trip continues with the star-gazing 'Evening Fixture', Eddie C style guitar licks of 'Walk In Romance' and romantic lullaby 'Dreams On Hold.'

Review: Iceland's Olafur Arnalds (Kiasmos) and German multi-instrumentalist Nils Frahm team up again for some breathtaking excursions in classical/ambient crossover bliss. Frahm's sombre piano passages gently dance over Arnalds' serene soundscapes and eerie field recordings on this bittersweet and emotive journey. What was meant to be a one hour video recording of the duo in action turned out to be an eight hour long improvisation session and these are some of the segments of the wonderful marathon recording. We particularly enjoyed the gorgeously haunting electronic soul captured on "23:52" where those analogue synth strings just rise and rise to an epic climax.

Review: 1995 saw the unlikely pairing of David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails playing together in a live setting, as part of the latter's 'Self Destruct Touring Cycle' - this arm being the Dissonance tour. Bowie was celebrating his then-latest album 'Outside', while NIN were still reeling from the roaring fallout success of 'The Downward Spiral'. This new 180-gram LP version consists of a picture disc with fitting spiky red lettering, straddling the typographic connotations of both Ziggy Stardust and Trent Rezor. The recordings themselves are remastered and greatly-enhanced versions of the original KLLT-FM and Syndicated radio broadcasts, documenting two live appearances at the Riverport (MO) and Shoreline (CA) Amphitheatres. Be sure not to skimp on timeless restylings of 'Hallo Spaceboy' and 'Hurt', each artist lending strange charisma to each other's masterworks.

Review: The superb Make Up series hits release number three and in doing so heads back to the trio that started it all. The combination of Chicago house originator Chez Damier, Adeen label head Camille and Italian talent Nico Lahs is a dream team indeed and they serve up some crucial edits that cover a wide sonic range. There are standout cuts on the first 12" such as 'Dance to Freedom' and 'African Bump' while jazzy grooves define 'Sunny' and 'Changes' is all about getting that dance floor vibing. This is another in-the-know musical voyage from this crew that more that deserves a spot on your shelves.

Review: Ian Carr and the Nucleus crew were real favourites of US hip hop master Madlib. He valued their dark, brooding, menacing beats and spooky soundtracks and this album is a perfect example of that adsorbing broodiness. It came on Vertigo in 1973 and was in part funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It started off life as a live show and then with an expanded cast become an album recording with help from vocalist Norma Winstone. Be With have remastered the whole record from original tapes and the sleeve has also been restored to its full original glory.

Review: Some tempos are pivotal to certain genres and 140 is one of those when it comes to dubstep. For that reason it is the title of this fine on going All Stars series from DUPLOC. Volume four is another masterful one with all niches explored starting with the low-end wobble of Mob Killa's 'Hattori' which is a brilliantly moody and late night saunter through a desolate urban landscape. Oudjat's 'Losing Control' is just as menacing and dark, and Ego Death pairs to back further to lush echoing hits and warped synths that hang in the air on 'Run It.' The flip side offers three more sparse but impactful cuts of hefty 140 bass brilliance.

Review: Italian techno heavyweight Giorgio Gigli has been at the forefront of his country's scene for some time now, working with Dozzy way back in 2004 and releasing an album on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe label in 2015. This release on Planet Rhythm gathers together a series of collaborative EPs Gigli recorded for the label between 2015 and 2018, working with tough techno operators Ness, Paul Ritch and VSK. Gathered together in one handy triple-vinyl package, this is an essential set for anyone who cherishes dark, driving techno loaded with steely atmospheres and next-level production.

Review: Masayuki Takanayaga was a pioneering Japanese free jazz player who started his career in the early 50s. More than just a skilled guitarist, he boldly pushed into noise and free improvisation realms, perhaps best captured with the New Direction Unit group on this landmark album from 1975. Eclipse is a formidable experience in which Takanayaga and his group wrangle an incredible spectrum of tones from their instruments with a seemingly unbound attitude. It sets the tone for groups like No-Neck Blues Band and beyond - a masterful statement from a fearless innovator.

Review: Last Spring, long-serving electronic experimentalist Norm Chambers (otherwise known as Jurgen Muller and Panabrite) was diagnosed with a rare form of sinus cancer after a period of ill health, During the time he spent waiting on news from his doctors, Chambers recorded what he thought would be his final sonic statement - an album called Facets that he rushed-out digitally. Here it lands on wax, alongside the happier news that so far Chambers' treatment has been a resounding success. Musically, Facets is a little more unsettling than some of the artist's work, with his usual fluid and dreamy ambient sounds being joined by angular and off-kilter beats, strange sounds and unsettling electronic rhythms. It's a formula that makes for interesting and occasionally intense listening.

It will be no surprise to learn once you hear this album that he loves to travel and manages to ably capture that in his work. Equator Hotline is packed with exotica-fuelled beatscapes and transportive vibes. On 'Animal Lithographs' there are lush harp sounds and subtle eastern melodies, 'Floating Through The Delta' is a humid and steamy trip down the river with the gentle patter of hand drums and swooning strings and 'Catching Waves' then carries you away on more gently broken beat loops and sun kissed melodies. This is super warm music for super warm days.

Review: It has been some years now since Nail came back from the wilderness after one of his early EPs was re-released by Fear of Flying. Since then he has turned out plenty of new material as well as digging deep into his vast and vital vaults to serve up the sort of lo-fi but kicking house sounds that made him and his Nottingham crew such a driving force back in the 90s. And that's what we get here on For Those That Knoe - no fewer than eight masterfully stripped-back cuts of deep house. Some are laced with dreamy melodies, some roll deep for days, some are raw and textured pumpers and some are jazzed-up bangers with charm to spare. Essential stuff.

Review: If you're not familiar with Naked Raygun we're guessing you either never spent time in Chicago between 1989 and 1999, hate punk music, or simply don't bother trying to find out what songs are playing on specialist rock radio shows.

Simply put, this band is one of the most important in US guitar history - or at least around a decade of that history - managing to influence and inspire countless others, hence having a number of albums dedicated to them, films documenting their story, and a resume that reads like a sprawling spider diagram referencing a who's who of gritty, sweaty, basement rock. Over the Overlords is a classic example of why they are so good, combining pop sensibilities and pacing with the sense of disenfranchised youth yearning to speak out about the wrongs of a world in which few of us feel comfortable to be ourselves.

Review: Many years after its release, Illmatic still remains a gold standard hip hop album and one of the most accomplished debuts ever recorded. It's the multi-syllabic internal rhymes of Nas, the tales he tells of life in the Queensbrudge suburbs of New York and the lexicon he uses which makes it resonate through the ages. Of course, the production (taken care fo by Bas as well as DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock and Q-Tip) and wealth of samples also elevates each tune to a higher plane that few have ever matched since. Including Nas himself, frankly. The album is widely regarded as one of greatest and most influential hip hop albums of all time, so don't sleep on this latest vinyl issue.

His impeccable discography will of course always be compared to his most legendary album, Illmatic, and most of the time it stands up. This one on Mass Appeal landed in November 2022 and now makes its way to vinyl - a coloured version is also available. The production was taken care of by Hit-Boy, Chauncey Hollis III and Jasnport J with Nas proving his famously loose yet complex mic work and digging deep into a wide array of prescient topics.

Review: You will not be surprised to learn that the last issue of this earlier in summer sold out almost instantly so Sony has done there right thing and reissued it also straight away. It is a 2002 compilation album by the legendary rapper that arrived a year after the game-changing wordsmiths come back. It includes several tracks that were unreleased at the time having been culled from recording sessions done during Nas's previous studio albums I Am... in 1999 and Stillmatic in 2001. Sparse, lo-fi beats are detailed with observational lyrics about urban life. Nostalgic and personal and a bit of a departure from his usual style, they still bite pretty hard.

Review: New Yorker Has is a hip-hop behemoth who will always be associated with his untouchable Illmatic album, but he has also penned plenty of other words that are almost as good. One of them is I Am: The Autobiography, which they say might be the greatest album never released. It is a connect double album that was originally meant to follow up Illmatic and It Was Written and it follows a superb plot line from the moment he is born during the intro to his death in the outro. The second half of the album then sees him reincarnated but before any of this saw the light of day in an official capacity it was leaked and bootlegged back when the internet was still young and infamous for these things. Now after all these years it finally gets the proper vinyl drop it needs.

Fortunately, though, he continues to work on new music with King's Disease III being his sixteenth studio album. The American dropped it at the back end of last year and it now makes its way to limited gatefold red & black striped vinyl. The record has enjoyed great critical acclaim for its loose yet complex style and cutting verses. The production was taken care of by Hit-Boy, Chauncey Hollis III and Jasnport J and is truly gold standard.

He is prolific, too, with three new albums dropping in quick succession, all of them proving he has tapped into some new and rewarding creative reserves. He explores it all here form classic boom bap to Atlanta and Memphis-inspired rhythms with guests like Lil Wayne hoeing him get back to something like his best - not bad given this landed on September 14, 2023 through Mass Appeal Records, on his 50th birthday.

Review: Nat Birchall is a prolific artist and someone who has proven he can do all forms of jazz from spiritual to contemporary to dub styled. This newest album from him finds him join with an expanded Unity Ensemble to cook up six original compositions featuring the likes of cult UK tenor saxophonist Alan Skidmore and guest percussionist Mark Wastell. They all came together initially at a John Coltrane tribute concert at London's Cafe Oto last year and soon found they had a common creative group so decided to get in the studio together. That early synergy shines through here on a lush five track record that is expansive and uplifting and rich in celestial melody.

Review: The Hip Walk is often said by both fans and critics to be one of Nathan Davis's finest albums. It finds him with his quintet and featuring Carmell Jones on top form back in 1995. At the time, Afro-American Davis was living in Europe and working with the likes of Art Blakey. Jones was an old school mate who plays trumpet on this record and is know for doing the same on Horace Silver's classic 1965 Song for My Father. Nathan's role was to hold down the rhythm section and he did so in style here across some top ballads and virtuoso solo exhibitions from his bandmates.

Review: Ceremony Of Seasons drops its first two releases in quick succession and after Ross Gentry's inaugural ambient wine pairing, Brett Naucke now repeats the trick. He has written this lush ambient long player "to be paired with Conjured In Shadows, a Mendocino-grown, carbonic macerated Nouveau wine from the 2022 harvest." It is a superbly organic soundtrack with found sounds and plenty of evocative designs all bringing to mind a warm day outdoors on 'An Open Secret', celestial skies on 'A Glass Touch' and autumn melancholy on 'Private Life'. The flipside explores the rest of the season with icy melodies and candle-lit sounds that evoke hymnal solitude.

Review: Brooklyn-based Rachika Nayer broke the mould with her startling 2021 debut, Our Hands Against the Dusk. She then proved that was no fluke with follow-up release, Fragments - more a collection of songs rather than an LP per se - and by 2022 had cemented herself as a darling of the chin-stroking music press with Heaven Come Crashing, a record that could not be more beautiful if it tried, but one which also manages to leave us feeling like something has had a huge impact on our lives. For the most part, Heaven is a blissful electronic album that pays homage to silent zeitgeists of nightlife culture - 6am walks through empty city streets with chosen family, moments of strange stillness, depth and quiet on a dance floor. But all that climaxes on the closing titular offering, which explodes into a symphony somewhere between DNTEL, Explosions In the Sky, and LTJ Bukem.

Review: Following their signing to the immensely impressive roster of pop-punk-centric label Hopeless Records, Welsh upstarts (soon to turn megastars) Neck Deep made good on all of the promise of their 2014 debut full-length Wishful Thinking with their breakout sophomore effort Life's Not Out To Get You in 2015. Linking up with A Day To Remember vocalist Jeremy McKinnon, former guitarist-turned-engineer Tom Denney and producer Andrew Wade down in Florida, the guidance and input from more seasoned veterans helped elevate the band's hardcore-adjacent blend of anthemic, saccharine pop-punk to staggering new heights, leading to somewhat of a torch-passing between bands as Neck Deep's stratospheric ascent can likely be drawn back to the success of this second LP. Now, courtesy of their ever-supportive label-home, the album lands back on wax after too long an absence.

Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Japanese funk and soul group from Tokyo who have an unashamed love of James Brown and his hard-hitting funky style. They do big dance numbers as well as more laid-back and mellow moments, but this new 7" is very much in the former camp. "The Jet Leg" (feat Ryo Nakata (Osaka Monaurail)) is all big horns, hard and crisp drums and incendiary vocals from the lead singer. It's a real stormy tune and on the flip side, "Wolf" doesn't let up. It's another rousing tune lead by huge horns, all manner of bristling percussive sounds and a driving rhythm section.

Review: Trombonist Ira Nepps - a member of Hawaiian AIR classic Lemur who also recorded with the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Leon Russell and BB King - released only one album and that was this one in 1979. Trombone Feeling is a seamless and soulful fusion of jazz and mellow styles with Brazilian sunshine flavours that brings to mind the work of the great Roy Ayers. It features such gems as the lush title track with its sublime female choses and the more low key and soothing sounds of 'Trickey Mickey' as well as plenty more. It has become a cult and hard-to-find album having only been pressed up 500 times back in the day, and it was popularised on the radio on the US mainland.

Review: 41 years after its original release, it's hard to grasp just how revolutionary the New Age Steppers self-titled debut album was. The brainchild of the Slits' Ari Up and producer Adrian Sherwood, the set brought paired the cream of the post-punk scene (including the Pop Group's Mark Stewart and journalist Vivian Goldman) with a string of experienced dub-wise players to create a set that genuinely took dub and roots reggae in thrilling new directions (think alien noises, industrial sounds, experimental effects and squally guitar textures). Now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release, New Age Steppers is an album that should genuinely be in every serious music-head's collection.

Review: Having previously delivered a must-have, quintuple CD retrospective of African Head Charge's influential albums, On-U-Sound has wisely decided to give the same treatment to Slits singer Ari Up and Adrian Sherwood's equally as influential New Age Steppers project - an outfit whose rotating cast of guest musicians included a string of British post-punk greats. Discs one to four showcase, in sequence, the collective's spaced-out, often experimental dub albums released between 1980 and 2012 (The New Age Steppers, Action Battlefield, Foundation Steppers and Love Forever). The fifth and final disc, subtitled Avant Gardening, gathers together rare dubs, unreleased tracks and "version excursions" from the archives. Throw in extensive sleeve notes from Oli Warwick telling the story of the project and you have a nigh on essential boxset.

Review: It has been 26 years since people had their first taste of New Found Glory. Emerging from Coral Springs, Florida, in the height of the pop punk second wave (Stateside at least), back then they were hailed by many as pioneers of a re-energised sound, offering rowdy, speedy, unrelenting and immediately sing-along-worthy anthems by the bucketload, referencing alternative rock and hardcore without putting off anyone eyeing them up for chart targeting marketing campaigns.

Make the Most of It certainly clarifies that praise was not simply the dew-eyed ramblings of people caught in a moment. Having created the blueprint for their sub-genre, here they strip all that away without damaging the emotional quality, offering a rousing and - it has to be said - evocative acoustic record that lays bare their lyrical and instrumental talent.

Review: The eighth full-length from Floridian pop-punk legends New Found Glory marked their first as a four-piece following the controversial ejection of founding guitarist Steve Klein, and would serve as a creative reappraisal of the band's sonic trajectory at that time. Reverting from the accessible easycore of 2011's Radiosurgery, the follow up Resurrection would land in 2014 with a monumental chug-fest of anthemic breakdowns gelled to the type of earworm pop hooks ghost writers could only dream of penning. Featuring guest vocals from Anthony Raneri of Bayside on 'Stubborn' and (a pre-global success) Brendan Yates of Turnstile on the blistering closer 'On My Own'; Resurrection proved beyond a shadow of doubt that just because they were on the ropes, did not mean that New Found Glory would go down any other way than swinging, while what initially appeared to be their potential swansong, ultimately became a rejuvenation (or resurrection) as the band have continued to put out new albums all the way up to this day.

Decca has already reissued their superb debut album Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe recently to great acclaim. Now comes this second reissue of their Western Reunion London 1965 album on nice heavy wax. It features them covering classic like Miles Davis's 'Shades of Blue' in sympathetic fashion while there are also more introspective pieces like 'If You Could See Me Now' and high energy big band jazz swing bangs like 'Tiny's Blue.'

Review: It's quite hard to comprehend that such a pivotal album in the history of free jazz has taken this long to be reissued. Originally coming out in 1980, Visions Of The Third Eye is a landmark piece of work which saw the untamed terrain of free jazz being navigated with a certain soulful, spiritual bent which lands differently compared to a lot of other works in the genre. New Life Trio was made up of monumental drummer Steve Reid, guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist David Wertman, and on this record they broke down barriers but never at the expense of the feeling. Now Early Future have faithfully reissued the album with an appropriate level of grandeur, remastered and featuring a 20-page zine with interviews, essays and more.

Education Entertainment Recreation: A Concert Film By Mike Christie (Blu-ray)
Review: Most of us have seen footage of New Order's celebrated performance at Alexandra Palace in 2018, a joyous and celebratory occasion that saw the Manchester legends deliver hugely entertaining performances of songs spanning the entire length of their career to date. Fans will love the rousing renditions of such classics as 'Regret', 'The Perfect Kiss' and 'Sub-Culture', while the extended takes on 'True Faith', 'Blue Monday' and 'Temptation' are every bit as engrossing and rush-inducing as the 12" studio versions of those cuts. The band's encore of a trio of Joy Division tracks is simply superb, too. With a blue-ray film of the concert plus two audio discs, Education Entertainment Recreation should be an essential addition to any New Order fan's collection.

Review: Most people will remember the New Radicals from their international hit single (well, certainly UK and US hit single) 'You Get What You Give' - a Waterboys-esque slice of emotionally charged indie with rousing message about how putting in is the only real means of receiving anything good. Releasing just one album - this one, from which that song was taken - diving into the full record now, 24 years on, is intriguing.

While that statement track might have convinced many otherwise, newcomers will find that Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too is actually a pretty wild ride through psychedelic-leaning poppy rock. Or rocky pop, it's hard to know which order to punt for. Fundamentally, though, this is a way more complex and fascinating outing than That Big Anthem would have you expecting, nodding to early-Aerosmith, INXS and more.

Review: It would be fair to say that The New York Disco Orchestra's 1978 album Reverie - Get Up and Dance is not the most celebrated set around, though it has long been on the radar of many well-funded record collectors. The album was the work of brothers John and Rocco Giamundo and was originally released in miniscule numbers in the US, Belgium and Japan. If you dig high-quality orchestral disco, it's well worth a listen. Particularly impressive is jazzy opener 'Reverie', a solo-packed dancefloor interpretation of a Claude Debussy composition, heavyweight disco-funk workout 'Get Up and Dance' and epic B-side opener 'The Wat We Were', a wonderfully lengthy and over-the-top orchestral disco number that's just the right side of cheesy.

Here we have a highly sought-after album from the US, originally released as a promo album in 1979 in a blank sleeve by The New York Disco Orchestra. They are tight lipped regarding who was behind the project, but it was rumored to be a bunch of anonymous session musicians of the NYC scene at the time, with top engineers such as Jack Jones and Joaquin J. Lopes. This the first ever LP reissue of Reverie, featuring new artwork (based on the band's original idea for the intended US cover) and restored sound from the master tapes.

Review: Ahead of their time? Ruined by excess and ego? A difficult act to market? New York Dolls are one of those stories about the fickle nature of industry and listeners, and the risks of hedonism. Emerging from The Big Apple in 1971, the group had a thoroughly modern sound for the time, combining hard and what was then a very fresh glam rock sound with early punk prototypes, years before people would learn what that means. New York Dolls was the spectacular self-titled debut from the band, put out by Mercury in 1973. Although a commercial failure, it's often cited among the greatest rock 'n' roll records of all time, but despite critical success it did little outside the US, where sales weren't great as it was, and the outfit would only last another few years - with various lineup changes - before calling time. This rare release charts what came before all that, including collector's item demos from their time playing as Actress.

Review: If you've yet to catch up with the story of Danny Torrance, the young boy with special powers who wound up being tormented and almost murdered by his father, Jack, after the latter went mad in the remote and closed-for-the-season Overlook Hotel while working as winter manager, then we do recommend Doctor Sleep, the long-awaited sequel to landmark horror classic The Shining. However, it's wise to heed this warning: don't expect the same level of excellence this time round, or indeed the same type of movie.

Part two is arguably at its best when it slips into a similar vein as its predecessor, with eerie quiet and these subtle then intense builds of tension. That doesn't happen too often and the narrative is far more fantastical than traumatic. In contrast, the score itself - delivered by The Newton Brothers - does serve comparable purposes to the first. A masterclass in atmospheric white noises, shimmers, broodingly menacing noises and suggestions of fright.

Review: Japanese maverick Kohei Matsunaga, aka NHK yx Koyxen explores far and wide on this new album Climb Downhill 2. It comes after many years of unusual but ultimately excellent sounds on the likes of Diagonal, DFA, Pan, L.I.E.S. and right back to Mille Plateaux and WordSound. Across 13 cuts he truly gets loose and abstract, mishmashing endless genres and sub-genres into lively cuts that are both dance yet cerebral. His sketch-pad style approach to building sonics makes each tune a live and restless collision of freaky frequencies and squealing synths, busted bass and broken beats.

Review: Nia Archives has burst through and made a gigantic impact that now stands her at the forefront of the latest jungle era, and pretty much has done since she first made waves in 2020. Her collagist soundscapes have brought an all new sense of energy and rejuvenation to the genre that has in turn brought in plenty of new fans. While some may label her a revivalist, she emphasises that that aspect of the genre has never really gone away. The 24-year-old's debut album has been much anticipated by fans who have fallen in love with her weightless jungle tracks and intense basslines and they aren't let down here as those sounds resonate throughout.

Review: The only album Nico gave us that didn't feature John Cale was a visionary piece of work. Not for a moment suggesting the absence of her regular collaborator improved things, but Drama of Exile certainly saw the iconic German musician, singer and songwriter move in some different and very new directions. Enlisting the help of Philippe Quilichini, a Corsican bassist, and introducing a Middle Eastern rhythm section definitely helped, but ultimately you can't help feeling this was an album she was always supposed to make. That voice, once described by the critic Richard Goldstein as sounding like "a cello getting up in the morning", was perfect for what had come before, but as the focal point of experiments in coldwave, synthwave, goth and new wave, it seems to take on new resonance and power. A thing of obscure beauty that deserves every bit of this repressing.

Review: The Sonor Music Editions label is serving up a welcome reissue of the soundtrack of the cult Italian cult movie Emanuelle in America. It comes in super limited quantities with just 500 vinyl copies pressed and the whole thing has been remastered for the occasion. The sex thriller movie was directed by the legendary Joe D'Amato and its music was overseen by Nico Fidenco. Fittingly, the sounds are super libidinous, sexy and seductive, with sultry strings and 70s porno vibes never too far away. This one is for adults only, for sure.

Review: Night Owls are an LA-based group made up of members of The Lions and The Aggrolites, pooling their skills into a seriously slick stew which splits the difference between roots reggae and funky soul. Sonically, they achieve a perfect 70s sound with plenty of choppy guitar licks, cool organ and light dubby touches on the desk, but first and foremost comes the songwriting. These tunes have an instant classic kind of feel to them, helped no end by the revolving door roster of vocalists reaching from Kendra Morris to Malik The Freq Moore and so many more besides lending their croon to the exquisite musicianship.

Review: The highly respected Northern English music journalist John Robb once described The Nightingales as "the misfits' misfits". In a small part, this is probably owing to the relentless changes in lineup the group have experienced since forming in Birmingham in 1979. However, that's really quite a reductive reading of the statement. Realistically, the post punk outfit just don't quite match their peers, with a take on the genre that incorporates elements of folk and gypsy rock.

Or at least that's our reading. Agree or not, In The Good Old Country Way was the outfit's third studio album, and at the time of its original release (1986), was recognised among their most polished and refined work. Nevertheless, it still sounds like a raw and rather uncompromising workout, sweat-soaked and dirty, experimental but really just aimed at making you spill your drink.

Review: After what seems like an eternity (four years to be exact), Aim and Niko have fired up their ATIC Records imprint to release the latter's first album in nine years. Produced by Aim, Electric Union is a pleasingly eclectic affair that rightly puts the Seattle-born singer front and centre. After opening with a dash of futurist, house-fired synth-pop ('It Could Be Love') and shiny new wave revivalism (the Goldfrapp-esque 'The Palace Discotheque'), the set sees Niko and her long-time producer sashay between analogue-rich electro-pop, kaleidoscopic downtempo loveliness and thrill-a-minute D&B ('You Used To Have Her'), all shot through with neon-lit synth sounds and crunchy machine beats.
