Ramm200 (trifold triple 12" (side 6 etched))
Ram
Cat: RAMM 200. Rel: 15 Feb 16
Drum And Bass
  1. Culture Shock - "Piano Dark" (original dub) (5:59)
  2. Mind Vortex - "Future Fold" (4:56)

  4. Kryptic Minds - "The Truth" (Insideinfo remix) (5:54)
  5. Rene Lavice - "The Calling VIP" (4:53)
Review: Andy C's mega-label Ram celebrates the big 200 in style: triple vinyl in trifold sleeve with etched sixth side, each of the five cuts represent Ram's dark, start extremes. The touching depths of Culture Shock's long-awaited "Piano Dark", the Noisia-level antics of Audio on his June Miller, InsideInfo's deep throat bass on "The Truth" and the add bass fluctuations on Rene's VIP. 200 singles deep and still killing it, Ram have put together a serious package here.

  1. Yta Jourias - "Adome Nyueto" (Bosq rework) (8:10)
  2. Roger Damawuzan - "Loxo Nye" (Pushin Wood remix) (5:39)
  3. Napo De Mi Amor - "Cacatchoule "Berceuse Bassari"" (3:04)
  4. Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

Abu Ali (Record Store Day 2019) (limited yellow vinyl 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: WWSLP 021LP. Rel: 30 Apr 19

  1. Abu Ali (13:12)
  2. Prelude (Theme From Mais El Rim) (12:49)
Review: Wewantsounds' 2019 Record Store Day release takes us back to 1978 and a hard-to-find 12" single from Lebanese composer, pianist, playwright and political commentator Ziad Rahbani. "Abu Ali" is perhaps not Rahbani's best known work - in the Arab world his various albums are far more celebrated - but it is one that has chimed with Western audiences thanks to its assimilation of elements of American disco, soul and funk. The title track is something of a beast: a 10-minute epic that wraps Arabic orchestration, mazy horn refrains and prominent piano motifs around an atmospheric disco groove and intergalactic synthesizer lines. It's bonkers but brilliant, making this reissue more than welcome. On the flipside there's a chance to enjoy "Prelude (Theme from Mais El Rim)", an epic example of Rahbani's 1970s soundtrack work.

Review: If you are lucky enough to have visited Dusseldorf club Salon Des Amateurs, you may be familiar with one of its residents, the cultish Serbian DJ Vladimir Ivkovic whose daring sets are inspiration to another of the venue's stars in Lena Willikens. Often Music is Ivkovic's new label and their first release shines a light on the unreleased archives of pioneering Serbian electronic artist Rex Ilusivii, real name Mitar Suboti?. The Serbian artist sadly passed away in a studio fire in 1999 leaving behind a vast number of unreleased works recorded over a decade from 1980 onwards. Six of those rescued tracks feature on this double 12" release In The Moon Cage (side 4 houses an etched illustration) and the more daring selectors out there will find them quite inspirational.

Review: First released way back in 1992, Radio Tarifa's debut album "Rumba Argelina" has long been considered something of a global fusion classic. Reissued here on vinyl for the very first time - weirdly, it has only ever been available on CD in the past - the album has lost none of its charms. It's naturally rooted in various strains of traditional Spanish music - flamenco, Andalucian folk music and so on - but also incorporates musical elements from North African and Arabic music, with occasional nods towards tango and such obscure (but surprisingly enjoyable) styles as German medieval music.

Review: Twenty years ago it sounded like an oddly poignant evocation of pre-millennial tension. Two decades later it stands as an eerily prescient glimpe into the technological alienation and dislocation of of a new era. Yet more importantly, OK Computer is no more or less than a sparkling, dramatic and moving collection of songs that haven't lost any of their impact in the interim. The sound of a band stubbornly refusing to follow up the stadium-strafing stylings of its predecessor The Bends - and instead bursting headlong into experimentation and wild creativity -is portrayed in still more vivid colours by the alarmingly strong collection of out-takes and B-sides collected herein, Yet there's no getting away from the chill and spark that marked out OK Computer from everything surrounding it in the post-Britpop malaise, and continues to do so in the pre-Brexit counterpart.

Review: French percussionist Roger Raspail has been active on the Parisian scene for decades, releasing his debut album - the CD-only Fanny's Dream - way back in 1997. This belated second set is a deliciously vibrant and internationally minded affair, with the 13 tracks variously touching on Afro-cuban grooves, jazz-funk, zouk, calypso, tango, samba and hard-to-pigeonhole musical fusions. A range of guest vocalists swing by to lend a hand, while Rapsail's brilliant drum work - which encompasses all manner of different percussion instruments - providing the glue that holds everything together. While there are a few deeper moments, for the most part Dalva is a joyous celebration of global rhythms.

Review: Christopher Rau is a true stalwart of the German deep house scene, with releases on a who's who such as Smallville, Office, Mule Musiq and Die Orakel over the years. FME Hustle is the Hamburg native's new one, where he can count Berlin urban house heroes Money $ex to his list of credentials. Expect the same soulful and dusty deepness from the man, as he's been consistently pumping out for close to a decade from his new home in the capital. From the broken emotive groove of "Jetlag Alter", the neon-lit lo-fi hiss of "Uebelst Bekorbt House Mix" or the textured/dub-laden tech house of "Drama - Chamber" Rau further demonstrates exactly why he's still one of the most highly respected producers within the genre.

Review: Mexico's Rebolledo has played an important part in Comeme's development over the years, and his nutty strain of electronic dance music fit perfectly in line with the label's tone of voice. Never straight enough to be categorised as house but always too structured to be labelled simply as ambient, Rebolledo is one of the few artist's truly making 'outsider' music these days. This latest album, Mondo Alterado, is perfect for anyone wanting something deep and mystical but that still carries enough weight and shape to be played to other human beings. In fact, a big part of the tunes on this LP verge onto the 'dance' side of things, but the producer has a distinct knack for making that sound constantly surprising, a sort of perennial sonic morphing that steers clear of any concrete genres. Review: Red Soul Community is a ska band from Spain founded by Carlos Dingo, and after a small hiatus they make a big return with a punk riddled new album that comes with suitably confrontational artwork. Known and loved by rocksteady fans round the world, this outfit is led by the captivating vocals of Isa Garcia and since 2005 they've turned out a number of acclaimed albums. This new one is an uptempo affair with energetic grooves, hints of American ska, skinhead and 2 tone, and attitude to spare. The songs are both catchy and dance-y, and the whole album is wonderfully colourful.

Review: A detailed document that captures a unique period in African music history: the most western point of Africa had attracted all manner of traders and visitors over the years but it was the Cubans and Americans who really left their mark with soul, jazz and son montuno. By the '70s cities such as Dakar and Thies had become hotbeds of national acts who'd repurposed these influences with their own west African musicianship. And while many of them recorded music, not all of them released it. Here we find 12 of over 300 never-released-before recordings recently curated by audio archaeologist Adamantios Kafetzis and Thies sound engineer Moussa Diallo. Complete with a 12 page booklet detailing the era's history with levels of research it's never enjoyed before, this took four years in the making and you can really tell.

Review: It is strange that Reginald Omas Mamode IV didn't release a self-titled LP as his first album but, then again, this guy bangs to the beat of a different drum. Literally. We first clocked onto him thanks to an EP his released on London's 22a imprint, and we've been avid listeners ever since. He has a natural ability to embed an honest level of jazz sensibility into house or hip-hop, and we love that. If you're on a Floating Points or Dego tip, then this dude should be on your radar at all costs, with this album firmly in your bag. Across its fifteen songs, Mamode delivers sublime arrangements of jazz-minded house music, loose and hip-hop-minded broken beat, and plenty of his very own strain of high-grade. This material is too dope. Don't miss it.

Review: Way back in 1976, now legendary U.S jazz drummer Steve Reid and his band, The Legendary Master Brotherhood, headed into Studio WE in NYC to record what would become "Nova" - a near-legendary debut album that has since become a cult classic. Featuring a mix of punchy free jazz and free funk, the set is still regarded by many jazz-heads as Reid's defining work. Here it gets a fresh reissue on limited orange vinyl, with Soul Jazz Records doing their usual bang-up job on the mastering and packaging. There's much to admire throughout, from the fizzing dueling trumpet and sax solos of breezy opener "Nova", to the spiraling spiritual jazz intensity of "Free Spirits - Unknown" and the free-jazz epic "Sixth House".

Review: Ever wonder where Music From Memory founders Abel Nagengast, Jamie Tiller & Tako Reyenga got the name of their label from? The answer is obscure New York musician Vito Ricci, whose diverse and quite stunning discography of private press releases is compiled on this wonderful retrospective I Was Crossing A Bridge. Active during the '80s musical heyday of New York, Ricci description as "one of the unsung heroes of New York's downtown music scene" is fully qualified on this 18 track double LP release, which contains such a dizzying array of musical styles it's tempting to call him a musical genius. The three strong suite of "Inferno" tracks in particular could easily be mistaken for the work of Container, and that Ricci was capable of that as well as some tongue in cheek coke boogie like "I'm At That Party Right Now" means Music From Memory should be applauded once more.

Review: While he was already building an impressive reputation for his distinctively atmospheric take on modern classical, it was arguably 2006's Songs From Before full-length that really put Max Richter on the map. A decade on, that set - his third, for the record - is being given the reissue treatment. Widely praised at the time, it was Richter's first to feature a narrator, in this case the distinctive tones of progressive rock legend Robert Wyatt. His readings seemingly float above Richter's superb piano, and the subtle accompaniment of a string quartet. Richter has always shown a light touch, and it's this trait that makes Songs From Before such a beguiling listen.

Review: Romania's Rodion GA is by no means a new name. The founding and only remaining member, Rodion Rosca, has been making music since the Communism-oppressed times of the 70's and 80's, where psychedelic sounds were by no means appreciated! It's only recently that Rosca's forward thinking music has truly seen the light of day, and following a retrospective on Strut, the equally on-point BBE present this 20 track selection of long-lost material! This stuff is seriously out-there, and each track brings something different to the table. From the drum-machine, Eastern vibes of "Acvila Fragment", to the gnarly, guitar-thrashing electronic of "Cosmic Game, and even the post-punk oddities of tracks like "Paradox", there's something in hear for all diggers and wax junkies. Recommended, of course.

Review: The story of Puccio Roelens begins way back in 1969, a time when the 'exotica' sound was at its peak, and when electronic music really started to have an impact on the rest of the global scene. Constanza Records, from the late 60s through to the late 70s, was responsible from some truly pioneering work by a small selection of artists from around the globe. Roelens was one such artist, a producer who contributed to the infamous series named Musica Per Commenti Sonori, or 'music for sonic comments'. His particular contribution was entitled Lipstick, and explored the vast possibilities of disco, a genre that was at its height at the time, but that was beginning to take on new influences that would eventually transform it into boogie. This album is a special piece of work, a collection of sublime disco tracks with an experimental edge. The more you listen, the more you want. TIP!

Review: Ninja Tune's relentless release schedule continues apace here with the much anticipated debut album from Romare. Under the name, London producer Archie Fairhurst first made waves with a couple of excellent 12" releases for the Black Acre label which revealed a quite distinct approach to production. Inspired by the collages of noted US artist Romare Bearden, Fairhurst's fascination with African-American culture is explored through his productions which deftly weaved in untold amounts of samples in an illuminating fashion. How Romare applies this approach to the album format is one of the most compelling thoughts you will have when listening to Projections. The resultant 11 tracks suggest Fairhurst has achieved it with aplomb.

Review: In our eyes, Questlove is one of the best drummers of the modern era. His playing skills have held down killer grooves by everyone from D'Angelo to Jill Scott, Erykah Badu to Soulquarians. His own Grammy Award winning band The Roots brought thrilling musicianship and live instrumentation to the hip hop game and are widely regarded as one of the best live acts in the genre. Their fourth album, Things Fall Apart, was their real breakthrough and is now presented here, remastered, with bonus tracks, rare photos, essays from Black Thought and Questlove and liner notes from Questlove. Essential.

Review: Up until Peter Gordon's recent revival, excerpts from Arthur Russell's 1975 composition Instrumentals - inspired by his studies of Indian and western music while in San Francisco a few years previously - had only ever been performed in public on a handful of occasions. While this may have partly been due to the Russell's desire for it to be performed in a single 48-hour cycle, it has meant that the few recordings that do exist have remained hidden for decades. This superb double album gathers together those excerpts, recorded between 1974 and 78 in New York, alongside recordings of two other early Russell works. Musically, it's as strange, imaginative and touching as you'd expect, with Instrumentals variously fusing pastoral classical music, Indian mysticism, and (then) contemporary Americana.

Review: With unabashed portraits adorning the major releases of Ry Cuming's music, the coastal crooner that is RY X on stage is certainly not shy of revealing his rugged sensitivity of swoon, inside and out. A production feat of the highest order, Unfurl, presents an album diving deep in a procession of chords and reverb-drenched vocal work. With flashes of post-dubstep beats in tracks like "Untold" - possibly hinting at his James Blake inspirations - to the profound and effectively melancholic chords in "Body Sun", RY X has delivered an unrivalled album of coastal blues and roots meets contemporary pop and electronica by the way of easy listening and piano. Five Stars.

Review: A welcomed heavyweight vinyl reissue of 1994 GRAMMY award winning album from two of the 20th century's most inspirational, creative bluesmen from two wholly contrasting sides of the world: Ali Farka and Ry Cooder. Most of Talking Timbuktu kicks its feet in the dusty plains of Mali with traditional instrumentation and time signatures before dropping into occasional splashes of soul surging blues such as the fiddle-like picking of "Ai Du" and the foot-stamping yearns of "Amandrai". A timeless meeting of two amazing minds that will never happen again, this should be reissued every 20 years by law to ensure future generations are aware this happened.
