Review: Flying Lotus collaborator Thundercat returns to Brainfeeder with his first full album since 2013's superb Apocalypse. Presented over four coloured pieces of 10" vinyl, Drunk is a thrill-a-minute, mix-tape style trip through the multi-instrumentalist and beat-maker's various inspirations (think skewed hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, left-of-centre electronica, and so on), all of which have been fused and mutated to fit his unique musical perspective. His high standing within the leffield hip-hop community has allowed Thundercat to snag some impressive guest stars, too, including Kendrick Lamarr, blue-eyed soul legend Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Pharell and jazz man Kamasi Washington. Old pal Fly-Lo also lends a hand.

Review: Thundercat's last album, 2017's "Drunk", is undeniably one of the greatest full-lengths of the past few years - a dizzyingly varied and mind-altering affair that mixed and matched styles to create thrilling new fusions of past and present sounds. He's at it again on this delayed follow-up "It Is What It Is", which was co-produced by Flying Lotus and includes an impressive cast-list of guests and collaborators (think Kamasi Washington, Ty Dolla Sign, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lil B and Louis Cole for starters). Musically it's impossible to pigeonhole - think rubbery 80s funk meets spiritual jazz meets reggae meets hip-hop meets experimental beats meets... you get the idea - and that makes for inspiring listening. Whether it's quite as good as "Drunk" is debatable, but it's certainly superb.

Review: The story of Tia Blake is more than a little enigmatic. Apparently she was an American teenager in Paris in 1970, and she somehow ended up securing a recording contract for a small clutch of public domain folk compositions which resulted in this stunning album. Blake performed one concert in support of the album and returned to North America the next year, leaving behind any potential career as a folk singer. Mores the pity, because this album is an arresting trip through traditional songs guided by Blake's captivating voice, which calls to mind Vashti Bunyan's dusky fragility albeit in a lower register. It's not been in print on vinyl since 1971, so don't expect these gems to stay around long.

Review: Record Kicks presents Keep It To Yourself, the new album by premier Dutch soul band The Tibbs. Produced by Paul Willemsen (Michelle David) and mastered in Nashville by soul veteran Bob Olhsson, who used to cut vinyl for Motown back in the day, the new album is the band's third Long Play. It contains 12 fresh 'n vibrant tracks that once again will take you back to the golden days of soul music. From the very first note, The Tibbs' musical prowess exudes a soulful, funky energy that is nothing short of mind-blowing. Among the twelve new ones, we find the first single 'Ain't It Funn', a high-energy stomper that sets the tone for the entire album, the New Orleans funk inspired 'Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks' and 'Chicken Bones, 'In Orbit', an emotional and heartfelt love ballad that allows the velvety vocals of singer Roxanne to take center stage or the northern soul belter 'Give Me A Reason'. Review: Tibi Dabo unveils his long-awaited full-length 'Vista' on Crosstown Rebels, with the kaleidoscopic nine-track album showcasing his diverse and rich sound-palette, centring on a chillout, colourful minimal house mood recalling the likes of Herbert or Eliphino. Born in Barcelona but steadily working his way into a Europe-wide infamy, Dabo has slowly grown in stature to become a Crosstown Rebels favourite, further bolstered on this dreamy eight-tracker which demonstrates a particular knack for making minimal and deep house sound personal and homely, not just 'deep'. Elegant and diffuse, bouncy and serene, this isn't an album you'll want to miss if you've a keen ear for detail.

Review: It's amazing to think how close this record was made to its predecessor, Tiblsc's critically acclaimed (and rightly so) debut album, Delusive Tongue Shifts. Which isn't to suggest for a moment that the two are particularly different, more just the first outing was so close to perfection it's hard to imagine anyone having found the time to have other material ready to go almost immediately after the initial batch.
Hypertranslucent picks up where its older sibling left off, and runs with similar themes and sounds. It glides and floats its way through eight tracks of stunning ambience, quiet but impactful, opiate but clearly formed and coherent. The musical equivalent to a lucid dream - producers fully in control of every moment, but with the sense of reality and rules drifting into the ether.

Review: When Mute proposed to Yann Tiersen, a storied composer and multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for utilizing odd instruments, that they put out a career retrospective, he agreed with one condition: that he could re-record all of the tracks, many with guest performers, and include a handful of brand new tracks. "Portrait" is therefore a snapshot of his career seen through a new prism. It's a very enjoyable set and the assembled cast list - which includes such luminaries as Gruff Rhys, Stephen O'Malley and regular collaborator Olavur Jakupsson - is mighty impressive.
