Review: A couple of years back, DJ David Goblin (an alias of Belgian designer/DJ/producer David Coquelin) unleashed "Ork Muzik", a bizarre-but-brilliant debut that comprised two insanely action-packed DJ mixes and a couple of similarly eccentric, hard-to-pigeonhole tracks. This follow-up is similarly unhinged - think mind-mangling mutations of rave, industrial, grime, techno, trance and gabber, chopped up and reassembled in the most madcap of ways - and contains a range of collaborations and solo tracks from a wide range of similarly-minded associates. It's ridiculously hard to accurately describe and concrete info is hard to come by- aside from the involvement of Low Jack under the B-Ball Joint alias - but suffice to say it's the kind of set that inspires fear, enjoyment and laughter in equal measure. Delightfully bonkers.

Review: Is there a more on-point modern jazz label than Chicago's International Anthem? The imprint has a knack of releasing far-sighted music that goes way beyond standard jazz, offering up spiritual and experimental fusions fully in-keeping with the genre's genre-defying roots. This solo set from Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker - his second for International Anthem following 2016's "The New Breed" - is a superb example. Breathlessly eclectic in the most inspiring of ways, it sees Parker combine virtuoso jazz guitar solos and mangled, guitar-powered aural textures with all manner of live and sampled sounds to create a dizzyingly good album that variously touches on soul-jazz, post-rock, free improvisation, Terry Riley style minimalist soundscapes, ambient, jazz-funk and much more besides. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Those with a love of reggae should be familiar with the work of Winston Reedy - after all, he's been offering up singles and albums since the early 1970s. His latest album sees him join forces with the Inn House Crew, a specially created band of legendary Jamaican players, to deliver a slick, super-sweet selection of soulful reggae covers and original tracks. Reedy's voice is superb - emotive, rich and soothing - while the backing tracks are warm, sunny and groovy, sitting somewhere between classic 1970s reggae and the digital style that has dominated since the 1980s. It all adds up to a hugely enjoyable and entertaining set that's as summery and smile-inducing as they come.

Review: A couple of years back, singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens composed the score for a dance work by choreographer Justin Peck. Entitled "The Decalogue" - which apparently means "The Ten Commandments" - the piece was debuted by the New York City Ballet in May 2017. It's taken a while, but now a recording of the solo piano piece, as performed by pianist Timo Andres, is finally available. It's split into ten parts that Stevens says, "sound like etudes in the Romantic-Modernist tradition, as if prompted by Debussy". In practice, that means some quiet and contemplative passages, some jaunty sections and a whole load of superb, fast-fingered playing by the hugely talented Andres.

Review: Thundercat's last album, 2017's "Drunk", is undeniably one of the greatest full-lengths of the past few years - a dizzyingly varied and mind-altering affair that mixed and matched styles to create thrilling new fusions of past and present sounds. He's at it again on this delayed follow-up "It Is What It Is", which was co-produced by Flying Lotus and includes an impressive cast-list of guests and collaborators (think Kamasi Washington, Ty Dolla Sign, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lil B and Louis Cole for starters). Musically it's impossible to pigeonhole - think rubbery 80s funk meets spiritual jazz meets reggae meets hip-hop meets experimental beats meets... you get the idea - and that makes for inspiring listening. Whether it's quite as good as "Drunk" is debatable, but it's certainly superb.

Review: If you're a fan of Antony and the Johnsons then Tindersticks should be familiar by now. Or at least Stuart Staples' voice should be, even if you've never come across the band before. But whereas Antony et al exist in a flamboyant queer disco cabaret, this lot occupy a place far less counter cultural, much sweeter and more tender. "No Treasure No Hope" a string-infused, piano-focussed chamber pop declaration of sweet nothings, both for those who are still with us and those who have come and gone. And it's not all romance. Comparisons are made between father's relationship with son and relationship with his own father ("The Old Man's Gait"). Tears falling into beers ("Trees Fall"). And delightful, innocent worlds are presented via songs like "The Amputees". Back on fine, late-night dark barroom form, it's the finest Tindersticks have given us in years.

Review: Another psych-rock album from Toy, one of the few remaining genre acts that haven't faded into obscurity since the revival almost a decade ago? Well, not quite. What they warned us about with "Happy In The Hollow" - the track that preceded this long form - is now inescapable. A band that have discovered a sharper, less forgiving edge wield this powerful, streamlined pop sword and do some real damage. The fact "Songs Of Consumption" is a covers album only makes the stylistic direction more pronounced. If you've heard the originals of tracks like the Stooges' "Down On The Street" or the almost-unknown Nico bomb "Sixty/Forty" you appreciate what's been done here even more. Respectively dancefloor electronica and exotic, dreamy soundscapes in those two cases. Reinventions by the reinvented.

Review: Politically charged Motor City jazz collective Tribe has undergone something of a career rebirth in the last few years. The releases they played, produced and put out on their Tribe Records imprint in the '70s are rightly revered, but the truth is that they've made equally as good music since getting back into the studio in 1990 - as this brilliant retrospective from Strut proves. The ten-track set contains both released material and previously unheard recordings, with highlights including a fantastic new version of "Juba" featuring Harold McKinney and his "McKinfolk" musicians, a daring new version of Tribe member Phil Ranelin's "He The One We All Knew" and the spiritual rallying cry that is "Marcus Garvey".

Review: From the moment you hear Austin Getz' voice on opener "Still In Motion" it's quite obvious that "Altogether" is going to be something pretty special. It's hard to believe Turnover didn't think this themselves upon listening back to what they had created, too, given this is a more aesthetically far-reaching body of work than we've been accustomed to from the band up until now. Which isn't to discredit past achievements, more an attempt to highlight just how many elements are audible here. That first track begins on a sombre, blues-inflected call to arms before opening out into a huge pop song, itself marking a big change for the troupe in question. Sensibilities that run throughout this collection, combined with a plethora of different moods, from lounge disco on "Sending Me Right Back" to "Valley Of The Moon"'s swooning shoegaze nuances and the rolling rock 'n' roll air of "Plant Sugar". An accomplished outing indeed.

Review: Welcome back Tycho, on a productive roll and ready to dive straight back in after 2019's stellar "Weather" album for Ninja Tune. This follow-up continues in the vein of Scott Hansen's creative arc to date, fusing traditional band dynamics with electronics in the most fluid of ways, and making a heart-stirring brew out of the resulting interplay. The drums bite with urgency on tracks like "Outer Sunset", but never at the expense of the winsome guitar lines and swooning synths. The tempo ups and the beats diversify on "Easy", but the overall mood remains consistent throughout "Simulcast". It's a cohesive world that wraps around you from the first bars to the last, and it's a very pleasant place to be.
