  1. Minor Forms (Joaquin Joe Claussell Cosmic Arts version) (15:21)
  2. St Catherine & The Calm (feat Nadia Sparrow - LNS remix) (10:58)
Review: Francis Harris blew plenty of minds with his third LP, "Trivial Occupations", when it dropped last year, and now the German deep house don is revisiting two of the tracks from the record for a pair of smartly chosen remixes. On the A side, the mighty Joe Claussell presents a Cosmic Arts version of "Minor Forms" which bursts with nu jazz stylings, from the bashy drums to the wiggy synth lines pinging into the stratosphere. Switching stance pretty drastically for the B side, deep diving Canadian artist LNS takes "St Catherine & The Calm" down a rabbit hole of head-nodding meditation over the course of 11 minutes smattered with electro touches, mystical flute and more ear-snagging delights besides.

  1. In The Right Place (5:38)
  2. Johnnie's Home (4:31)
Review: Recorded and released two years before she gave us the iconic vocals on Indeep's "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", Beckie Bell's 1979 debut release enjoys its first repress in 37 years. You don't even need hindsight to hear the promise she had at the start of her career. "In The Right Place" was a spacy, almost bluesy disco jam where she's not afraid to take full command while "Johnnie's Home" still sparkles with reggae fusion funk that's often attempted but seldom smashed in such a sexy way.

  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

  1. Teste - "The Wipe" (Edit Select 2014 edit)
  2. Edit Select & Teste - "Ascend"
Review: Teste are back, but not without reminding us why they are so revered. Their track "The Wipe, originally released in 1992, is often credited as a forbearer to a style of techno described as bassline driven, and a style long championed by Munich label Prologue. So before Teste release any new music, Edit Select has extended their famous cut so the wormhole experience of "The Wipe" can last all the more longer. The real treat though is "Ascender", a brand new production between Teste and Edit Select which is similar to "The Wipe" only it swaps foreboding sounds for something lighter and the results are transcendental.

  13. If I Could Ever Get...
Review: Suction Records is thrilled to present the debut archival album release by RX-101, a bedroom techno producer from the Netherlands, Erik Jong. "Like Yesterdays" compiles 10 tracks from RX-101's first two vinyl-only 12" EPs, together with three CD/digital album exclusives. This previously unreleased material dates from 1997-1999, recorded live to cassette in a feverish burst of creativity, utilizing a small arsenal of classic techno instruments. Here's RX-101 in his own words: "From childhood I loved dance music. In the '80s one of my older brothers always recorded mixes from the radio and we always listened to that. My other brother and sister took music lessons in electronic organ and when I was about 9 years old I did the same. I quit when I was 14. From childhood I was fascinated by synthesizers. In the late '80s I started more and more listening to dance and house music and it was 1991 when I started listening to techno from labels like Underground Resistance, Transmat, Metroplex, +8 Records and Warp. That was the time I knew that I also wanted to make electronic music and build a studio. With my musical background and love for synthesizers, everything fell into place. When I heard Aphex Twin's "Digeridoo" in '92, I was completely hooked on Aphex Twin and soon discovered his label Rephlex. I almost bought every release. My friends at that time always listened to electronic music. In '92 (when I was 16) I bought my first synthesizer, a Roland Juno-106. Then I started to buy more stuff, and two years later I had a small studio with some synths, a drum machine, a Quadraverb fx unit, an Atari computer and a mixer. My Roland SH-101 is still my favourite synth. In those days I always played with my gear, but I never made a complete track or recorded something actually. After buying some more stuff in the years following, it was time to start making tracks. It was 1997 then and I was 21 years old. I started to like it very much and I was very productive then. I wanted to make music all the time. I was a student then and had plenty of time to make music. I made a lot of tracks and recorded everything to cassette between 1997 and 1999. In the early '90s I dreamt of releasing music on a record label, but in the years after that dream ebbed slowly away. I'm not sure why.... I think that's the reason I never have sent tracks or a demo to a label. In 2000 I quit school and I found a full time job. Because of this I also had less time to make music. It was a new step in my life. My passion to make music then became less. At one point I saved my tapes with my tracks in a box. In 2013, I discovered that box again. I thought it was a good idea to archive all of my tape tracks to my computer. The last time I had listened to it was 2001. In September 2013 I uploaded about 15 tracks of that old stuff to Soundcloud. About a year later I started to upload more and more stuff. I received many nice comments and I was a little bit surprised that a record company was also interested."

And commission a remix from Critical's stinky breddah Sam Binga. Yeah, Rua Sound are doing everything right: "Lifted" nods lightly at Horizons-era Bukem but with more amen addling while "Rotten" packs a skankier jungle punch. Binga's remix? Wonderfully sludgy. More of this please Rua.

  2. Background Explorer (7:47)
Review: Kiwi duo Chaos In The CBD has been on fire of late, delivering a string of deep and jazzy EPs for such labels as Rhythm Section International, Church, Mule Musiq and Amadeus Records. Predictably, this two-tracker on the freshly minted Youandmusic is equally as inspired. A-side "Global Erosion" is a warm and relaxed affair, despite the presence of rolling, Afro-tinged drums, with delay-laden horns drifting across the mix in evocative fashion. The duo's African influences are brought to the fore on "Global Explorer", a rolling, far-sighted affair full of dreamy deep house pads, twittering panpipe melodies and dense tribal percussion.

  1. Don't You Want My Love (Joe Claussell 1986 Reel To Reel edit) (8:54)
  2. Don't You Want My Love (Cratebug More Love remix) (9:06)
Review: Defected's fabulous Glitterbox off-shoot has thankfully repressed these two fist pumping disco remixes of Debbie Jacobs' classic "Don't You Want My Love". Stepping up on the a-side is the master of the mix, EQer extraordinaire and founder of the legendary Body & Soul party, Joe Claussell. His remix is perfect for said New York party with its loose percussion, big string stabs and relentless disco drums. Cratebug strips things back to a more functional and contemporary club track that builds in layers, with subtle filters bringing the tension until finally he lets the groove drop, no doubt to devastating scenes on the dance floor.

  1. SoulPhiction - "Sky So High" (5:52)
  2. Mike Dehnert - "Zumwald" (6:39)
Review: Bang, boom, biff! New label alert from contemporary house maestros Soulphiction and Mike Dehnert, a collaboration which has caught us by surprise and left us trailing by the wayside. Masterful. Hands & Tief is the name of the home to this punchy two-tracker that sees both artists put on their techno mask and offer something a little moodier than their usual output, respectively. "Sky So High" is Soulphiction going for a distorted, industrial approach and it works like a charm; the tune's percussion is raw and mashable in any mix, the bassline ominous and intriguing, and the groove powerful and body-moving. Mike Dehnert's "Zumwald" is more in line with his usual bags of tricks, except that here the lower frequencies are more aligned to the electro dynasty than a classic 'Berlin' approach. Both sleek, effective dance floor bangers recommended for pretty much any DJ wanting to lay down some heat!

Review: The Great Revivers continue their unassailable 2014 assault on the record boxes of funk selectors everywhere with yet another killer seven for the Funk Night label. Brashly titled "Don't Mess with GR" may be, but this Russian quartet always prefer to let their musicianship do the talking and you can't fault the Great Revivers funk here as three odd minutes of prime dirtiness unfolds driven by a killer drum beat. It's complemented well by the more uptempo jam that is "Hard Way To Go" and lays down a marker for what to expect from the Great Revivers forthcoming album.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Exzakt continues to forge one of the purest totems of classic electro with his Monotone label, and indeed his own output. The latest release is a various artists EP which perfectly sums up everything Monotone is about. The Advent leads the way with the dark, melodic "Eye's Of Envy," produced alongside Zein, before Exzakt himself drops a taut and wiry dancefloor bomb in the shape of "Kreep." 214 fires up the B side with the edgy, minimalist thrust of "Crouch & Turn," before EggFooYoung makes a surprise return to the fray with the more Miami-flavoured stylings of "Bass2Large," a slower, dirtier jam with low end frequencies to get the whole club freaking.

  4. Destroy This Fucking System (4:34)
Review: Mancunian lo-fi house heroes Natural Sciences are back with a bang in 2018: now giving us a second serving of throwback electro sounds courtesy of one Antonio Barbetta. He has had some great releases recently as Raw Ambassador on Mannequin and Ortloff. The Germany based Italian producer serves up what the label best described themselves as 'panzer funk and mechanised thrash metal from the shadows of Frankfurt's industrial district' and that's pretty spot on! There's the guttural futurist sludge of opening track "A Violent Collision" that will appeal to fans of Lux Rec or Return To Disorder, not to mention other excursions through heavy dystopian machine funk like on "Destroy This Fucking System". The breakneck "Adriatic Funk" is a full frontal assault that calls to mind the UK sounds of Bass Junkie & Dexorcist from a while back, while "Cyborg" is a fitting tribute to his new hometown's favourite son: the one and only Anthony Rother.

  3. Obnox (4:49)
  4. Dissolve (6:52)
Review: Mark System's last outing on Exit, 2015's Final Approach LP, was almost universally praised for its pleasing fusion of bombastic, tech-step influenced bottom end and dreamy, ear-pleasing liquid D&B elements. The long-serving producer has taken a similar approach on this belated follow-up EP. While opener "Break Glass" is a little creepier than previous efforts - if no less punchy and bass-heavy - it retains System's instinctive grasp of the dynamics of light and shade. "600K" brilliantly joins the dots between classic jungle, modern tech-step and 8-bit games soundtracks, while "Obnox" dips crunchy beats in wild electronics to brilliant effect.
