  1. This Is Bolga! (part 1) (3:35)
  2. This Is Bolga! (part 2) (3:53)
Review: German-Ghanaian group the Polyversal Souls have previously collaborated with a number of bands and solo artists from West Africa, so this hook-up with Northern Ghanaian outfit the Bolga All Stars - a collective made up of leading local kologo and frafra-gospel singers and musicians - should not come as much of a surprise. Separated into two parts for the seven-inch release, the track blends the Polyversal Souls' lolloping, late '60s style Afro-funk grooves - complete with fuzzy, period style production - and sharp horn section with glistening guitars, snaking solos and fine vocals from the Bolga All Stars. It's one of the Polyversal Souls' finest releases yet, and that's saying something.

Funk/Reissues
  1. Wake Me Up (2:50)
  2. The Penn Walk (2:52)
Review: George E Johnson's "Wake Me Up" is another of those killer funk rarities that very few people know about. It was released at some point in the dim and distant past on C.R.S Records, a deep funk imprint from Philadelphia that will soon be the subject of a Tramp Records compilation. This reissue, then, is something of a teaser for that set. "Wake Me Up" is a suitably heavy number, with George E Johnson delivering an impressively impassioned lead vocal over a fuzzy, intoxicated groove rich in distorted guitars, psychedelic-era Hammond organ licks, snaking sax lines and bustling drum-breaks. B-side "The Penn Walk" strips out Johnson's vocal, allowing the backing band's killer instrumentation to really shine.

  1. The Bottle (5:11)
  2. Hooked On Your Love (3:54)
Review: Recorded and originally released in 1999, "The Bottle" has been released twice by Expansion on 12" single and now finally gets its first 7" issue. The song is the most classic Gil Scott Heron song, vocalist Maysa Leak (of British supergroup Incognito) is still the finest contemporary soul singer with a unique voice and all here with the magic of a full Incognito production. It is coupled with "Hooked On Your Love", both songs from the Incognito produced album All My Life'. Another fine rendition of this timeless anthem by one of the all time greats.

  2. Sun Ra Interview With Jez Nelson (Jazz FM, 7th June 1990) (12:08)
Review: In honour of Record Store Day 2017, Gearbox has put together a rather special Sun Ra 7". Cut at 33rpm, the A-side boasts a previously unreleased piano improvisation by the spiritual jazz legend. It's as free-spirited and freaky as you'd expect, but also stunningly beautiful and, at times, impressively jaunty. It may take a few listens to fully comprehend, but it's more than worth the attention. The improvisation was captured during a rare 1990 interview with Jazz FM's Jez Nelson, so it's fitting that a 12-minute excerpt from that chat - featuring Sun Ra explaining some of his spiritual beliefs and approach to composition - can be found stretched out across the B-side. There are only 750 of these floating around, so grab a copy while you can.

  1. Luiz Carlos Vinhas - "Ye Me Le" (2:38)
  2. Golden Boys - "Berimbau" (2:58)
Review: The moment you put that needle down on "Ye Mele" you will know that you've lit a serious firecracker; that bold piano hook and silver harmonies have that instant classic appeal even if you've never heard it. A bona fide Brazilian classic. It's backed by a 68 track from the Golden Boys. A much more introspective fusion of late 60s American folk, Latin and Ennio-style original score music, full attention is arrested right until the stunning crescendo finale.
