Kill The Devil
Kill The Devil (7" 再出版)
Cat: CGI 7006. Rel: 29 Sep 20
Classics/Ska
  1. Kill The Devil (3:22)
  2. Bury The Devil (3:36)
Review: Original copies of the original 1978 seven-inch of 12 Tribes Of Israel's debut single are not only hard to find, but also exceedingly expensive on the rare occasions they do come up for sale. This reissue then is well overdue. "Kill The Devil" is that rarest of things: an instrumental roots reggae workout that peppers a dancefloor-friendly groove with fluid piano, Hammond organ and jazz guitar solos. The flipside dub version - re-titled "Bury The Devil" - is also superb, with a stripped-back, reverb-drenched version of the track's killer groove rightly taking pride of place throughout.

Funk
  1. Cramp Your Style (2:15)
  2. Whatcha Gonna Do About It (3:01)
Review: "Cramp Your Style" by All The People surely belongs among the canon of all time funk standards, sampled aplenty over the years, included on numerous compilations as well as being the recipient of cover versions from Breakestra and Killer Meters. Originally issued on the Blue Candle label back in 1972, a newly remastered edition of that 7" is now available for any funkateers out there without the 45 in their collections already. Robert Moore's yearning vocal sounds all the better for it too! And don't sleep on the bluesy delights of B side track "Watcha Gonna Do About It?".

  1. Beastie Boys vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:11)
Review: On his last two singles on Soopastole, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul smashed together elements of Stevie Wonder and Redman/Method Man, and James Brown and Crooklyn Dodgers. For his latest trick he's decided to pepper an edited version of "People All Over The World" by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB, with raps from a stone cold classic Beastie Boys tune. It's the sort of thing that shouldn't work, but the Beasties' flows work perfectly over the flanged guitars, undulating bass and unfussy 4-to-the-floor Philly Soul grooves of the MFSB track. You can hear his instrumental rework of that track on the flip; it's so good that it's arguably worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: For this year's Record Store Day, Biffy Clyro has decided to cover two big tunes, and has said he will donate all proceeds to Tiny Changes, a mental health charity set up in memory of Scott Hutchison. A-side 'Modern Leper' is a dense, angst ridden rework that previously was available on a Frightened Rabbit tribute album, while flip over this limited white 7" and you'll find 'Modern Love' which was performed at Howard Stern's Bowie tribute concert in 2019. There's rawness in the whole thing, from the wailing vocals to the walls of fuzzy guitar.

  1. Strobelite Honey (Maybe We Did mix) (3:50)
  2. Strobelite Honey (3:08)
Review: There's been plenty of great "golden era" hip-hop reissued on wax lately, mostly via tidy and on-point seven-inch singles. Here's another, as Mr Bongo offers up a replica edition of the increasingly scarce "45" of Black Sheep's 1991 scene anthem "Strobelite Honey" - a playful and fun-packed affair that still gets feet moving 29 years after it first hit clubs. On the A-side you'll find the superior "Maybe We Did Remix", in which Dres's entertaining lyrics about courting a woman at a club ride crunchy drums, scratches, squally high pitched horn sounds and a wealth of killer samples. Turn to the flip for the far funkier original version, which lifts warm, squelchy and groovy elements from early '80s disco cuts by Change and Luther Vandross.

Funk
  1. Take You Higher (2:49)
  2. Hummingbird (feat Alison Garner) (3:20)
Review: Bristol beat-maker, break-digger and turntablist Boca 45 has released some pretty special material this year, most of it on the 2020 Donuts imprint he inaugurated back in January. There's naturally much to set the pulse racing on the series fourth instalment, a highly limited green vinyl affair that we think will simply fly out of stores. A-side "Take You Higher" is a bustling instrumental hip-hop number based around slack-tuned breakbeats, heavyweight bass, cut-up guitar riffs and all manner of cheeky spoken word snippets. Vocalist Alison Garner guests on superb flipside "Hummingbird", a hybrid hip-hop/bossa-nova number blessed with mazy Hammond organ solos, bold piano stabs and extra-special percussion.

Review: On the fifth volume in his 2020 Donuts series of party-starting "45s", Bristolian break-digger and beat-maker Boca 45 joins forces with Ash the Author, a Reading-based mic man who has been tipped for great things by a number of more experienced MCs. He makes his presence felt on "Party Rockers", delivering distinctive lyrics over a rock-solid beat peppered with tight scratches and moody, horn style stabs. Boca 45 ups the tempo on heavyweight flipside "Batacuda Battlebox", a riotous cut-and-paste affair crafted from Latin style drum samples, booming bass and the West Country producer's usual sneaky and inventive instrumental snippets.

  2. Don't Pay Any Fuller (A Jorun Bombay edit) (3:45)
Review: Canadian Jorun Bombay is a long time remix master who now lands on Soundweight Records with his latest cut up and reworking efforts. The A-side finds him take on Blondie's legendary 'Rapture', which mixed slick raps with post-punk guitars. Here it becomes sweet rolling funk gem with molten chords and plenty of soul. The flip-side is a tropical rework of 'Don't Pay Any Fuller' that ups the bass and beefs out the drums, while layering in steamy chords and percussion that brim with character. These are two more classics in the spotless catalogue of Jorun Bombay.

Review: Maxine Brown and Chuck Jackson are two of Wnad Records's finest singing talents, as well as being firm favourites of the Kent label. For that reason they are paired up on this vital 7", which provides DJs with some high grade weaponry. They tackle popular songs from Van McCoy and Luther Dixon respectively. with Brown serving up the super short but sweet "I Wonder What My Baby's Doing Tonight", a soul gem that will make your heart soar. Chuck Jackson's "Two Stupid Feet" is more slow motion and mellow, but makes just as much of an emotional impact.

Review: For the latest in their ongoing series of limited-edition, hand-numbered singles, Zurich outfit Phantom Island has turned to the label's in-house producer and "sound wizard", Florin Buchel. As you'd perhaps expect, there's much to admire on the producer's first single under his given name, particularly A-side 'Proper Distance'. This sees guitarist Roger Szedzalik add glistening, sun-soaked jazz solos to a dreamy, sunset-ready backing track rich in liquid synths, reggae bass and bubbly electronic beats. The leisurely, Balearic-focused vibe continues on the flip, where Buchel peppers a delay-laden drum machine beat with fretless bass, gently unfurling synthesizer melodies and flecks of echoing instrumentation.

  2. Ronn & Selah - "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" (4:42)
Review: Stand by for the much anticipated follow up to the unreleased Ronn Colbert 7" on this label earlier in the year. "Just One Kiss Away" is an ultra rare soul stepper from 1981. It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Add in steamy chords and soaring strings and you have one helluva smoocher. "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" is another romantic to and fro between the pair, with a little more tension and build in the rhythm edition that adds an extra element of spice. Both are sure to become re-found classics.

Ready Or Not Here Comes Love
  1. Carolyn Crawford - "Ready Or Not Here Comes Love" (2:26)
  2. Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford - "What Made You Think" (3:11)
Review: We'd advise serious soul heads to take a look at this one. Part of the "Kent Select" series of dancefloor-focused 45s, it features two previously unissued 1971 recordings, both of which were produced by Mickey Stevenson. In some ways, it's incredible to think that Carolyn Crawford's "Ready Or Not Here Comes Love" has never previously been released; it's a genuinely inspired, up-lifting slab of soaring, stomping soul that will get Northern Soul enthusiasts racing for the dancefloor in their droves. Flipside "What Made You Think", credited to Hodges, James, Smith and Crawford, is almost as good, even if it lacks the rushing, celebratory positivity of the sublime A-side. In a word: essential!

Review: Pepite Records have a brilliant Holy Grail reissue on their hands here with two world music oddities that send seasoned collectors into fits of excitement. They come from French composer Jean Claude Oliver, who was a noted talent in his day and possible the first Parisian to own a sitar in the sixties. He worked with Serge Gainsbourg amongst others, while also working as Derboukas. Two of his finest experiments are served up for the first time here and mixes oriental vibes with eastern bossa. The original of the a-side is impossible to find and the 'Caravan March' gem on the B-side is a welcome addition that fuses psychedelic pop grooves with lush cello.

Review: Earlier this summer, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul raised our temperatures by layering Wu-Tang Clan vocals over a chunky, funk-fuelled backing track crafted from snippets of James Brown jams. He called it "Sex Cream", and now he's back with more sickly-sweet goodness based around the down-low greatness of the Godfather of Soul. A-side "More Sex Cream (Crooklyn Style)" delivers a similar-sounding JB-inspired beat, this time peppered with rhymes from "Crooklyn". It works wonderfully, of course, as does the flipside instrumental version. Bare party-starting fun for funk-loving hip-hop heads!

Party starters, get this on in the bag immediately, It is pure fire in 7" form, a record bursting with Latin flavours, bristling percussion and jazz-sing beats that will lift anyone off their seat and right into the thick of it. The samples are easy enough to spot but that doesn't stop the a-side doing plenty of damage. Then on the flip, classic soul anthem 'I'm a Believer' gets a big beat and funky bridge extension that will keep people stomping for days. This black version has only been pressed 200 times, so one quick.

Review: The wonderfully named Django the Bastard is behind the production on this retro-future package from Dorothy's Fortress on Burning Witches. It's a real melting pot of sounds from electro to Italo, synth to lo-fi. It's sleazy yet dazzling, dark but uplifting and was first put out more than 10 years ago and hammered by The Chemical Brothers. The flip is a fat bit of analogue grooving with trippy arps and frazzled bass. This group has had underground cult status for a while but are now back making new beats, and we're certainly pleased about that.

Review: Doris Duke's version of Marlena Shaw's seminal, powerful "Woman Of The Ghetto" originally appeared on her third album Woman in 1975. It's a searing version, Duke's full-bodied and fierce voice adding even more urgency to the searing social commentary embedded in the lyrics. Added to that is the stunning orchestral arrangement, which gets a full instrumental airing on the B side of this reissue from SAM - the soaring strings whip up a rich, cinematic strain of soul with a weighty groove underneath it. The song has never sounded better thanks to some fresh mastering, and it looks great too on red 7".

That is who goes first on the guitar licked, Americana tinged, disco dripped "Hipos" which is a perfect tune for gazing off at a distant sunset as you sway to and fro on an outdoor dance floor. Eddie C's "Crazy Heart" chugs a it harder, with busy melodic phrases riding up and down the scale over chunky drums. As always with Red Motorbike, this is grown up music for grown up dance floors, but that's not to say it isn't hella fun.

Review: Esplendor GeomEtrico was a pioneer in the noise world and this record is one of his most edgy and advanced works of all. It is noisy, gauzy, confrontational and frankly weird for the way it mangles synths, layers up distortion and contorts vocals into dark apparitions and paranoid sound worlds. This is the first and only legitimate reissue of the record which was initially only pressed in very small quantities after an enigmatic fan decided to help out and stump up the funds. The artwork is as iconic and disturbing as the music itself and the DIY, experimental nature of the music still arrests your attention all these years later.

Review: When Names You Can Trust was first establishing itself in the late 2000s, few of the label's artists did more to raise its reputation than 21st century Cumbia fusionists Frente Cumbiero. Via a series of seriously good singles, the Mario Galeano Toro-helmed outfit established themselves as a cumbia band like no other. They've been fairly quiet of late, so this belated return to the Brooklyn imprint is undeniably long overdue. A-side 'Porrovia' is simply superb: a fuzzy, bass-heavy Cumbia shuffler laden with buzzing analogue synth sounds, beefy sub-bass, punchy horns and stacks of quality Colombian percussion. Deeper, warmer and more rhythmically complex flipside 'El Metodo De La Cera Perdido' is equally as impressive, if a little subdued in comparison to the illustrious A-side.

Review: Patrick Gibin has signed some terrific records to his Mother Tongue label, so it's no surprise to discover that the Italian imprint's first "45" is a bona fide stunner. It sees sometime Gustosa producer Gary Superfly join forces with Other Lands (AKA Gavin Sunderland, previously best known for his work as Fudge Fingaz) to offer up the kind of sumptuously warm, languid, loose, toasty and organic fare that can't quite decide whether it wants to be jazz-funk, modern boogie or especially hazy deep house. A-side "Endless" is particularly potent, with waves of kaleidoscopic synth sounds and twinkling Rhodes solos relaxing over a chunky bassline and head-nodding drums, though toastier and hazier flipside "Purple" is almost as good.
