Techno
Ritmo Oscuro 1 (6:11)
Ritmo Oscuro 2 (4:53)
Ritmo Oscuro 2 (LDS remix) (4:13)
Ritmo Oscuro 3 (5:42)
Review: Hailing from Spain's Non Series label, Ritmo Oscuro' offers a diverse techno exploration. Sciahri / Conceptual join forces to delve deep into the title track and evolve it enough to make alternate versions stand on their own. The original track oozes sci-fi ambiance with its heavy beat and eerie atmosphere. 'Ritmo Oscuro 2' shifts towards a more aggressive, energy-building tech sound. LDS' remix brings broken beats and distinctive sound effects. Finally, 'Ritmo Oscuro 3' transports listeners to the 90s with its ravey, linear techno. If you are looking for some percussive, sci-fi techno then look no further then this.

She Was From Another Time (version 2) (5:39)
As Honest As She Lived (6:52)
Nina (6:37)
Review: Ornate Music has been serving up quality deepness since 2008 but it's been a while since we heard from them. Edinburgh based producer, Rai Scott, returns to Ornate Music, previously releasing on the imprint back in 2014. This long overdue followup to her Innershift EP brings ethereal atmospherics and hypnotising percussion. The opener is a dreamy and celestial vibe with gently rolling beats, while Version 2 is more defined by the smeared chords which spiral to the heavens. 'As Honest As She Lived' is another electric lullaby with well-crafted ambient pads and 'Nina' ends with layers of bells, glistening keys and shimmering melody that soothes the soul.

Review: Originally released in 1965, this landmark album of meditation features Scott's clarinet playing alongside Japanese musicians on koto and shakuhachi. Its tranquil and lucid sound has captivated artists and collectors globally, providing rich sampling by notable hip-hop and electronic music producers. This album's legacy lies in its ability to transcend time and genres, resonating with listeners seeking a sense of serenity and introspection. With the popularity of ambient continuing to rise and the importance of Japanese influence on electronic music being more and more prominent, this album becomes a more and more important guidepost in music.

Destination? Funk! (4:30)
Camelot Chill (4:52)
Review: This is the third installment in the Local Sugar Diggers Series from Scruniversal in which old and rare records from the label head's friend's collections get reworked and edited. This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. This one has romantic sax notes and gentle grooves with jazzy keys finishing it in style.

Review: At least one person has described Scythe's work as "expertly modulated space blues and isolationist architectures." First emerging from the ether (or at least that's how we like to think of it) through a series of clandestine cassette releases on Low Company in 2019 and 2020, Head X'Change almost feels like the culmination of all that has come before. A weird and truly wonderful place to spend time. A collaborative project between David West and R.A. Jones, elements of kosmische intermingle with a kind of earthy ambience, DIY electronics leading into white noise moments or new age melodies. At times it's so joyfully opiate you wonder if there's any way of getting back up off the pillow. In other moments, there's tension, eeriness, and uncertainty. Once you're in, it's a wild ride indeed.

Review: Arriving on lovely forest green vinyl, Standing On Giant Shoulders is the superb new album from Seafood Sam, a modern marvel who defies categorisation. Hailing from North Long Beach, he embodies a fusion of contradictions that define true originality as he seamlessly blends rap, soulful vocals, and masterful production and does so with effortless flair. Picture him cruising in vintage Cadillacs, indulging in caviar with a blade tucked away and exuding timeless charm in classic Pelle Pelle attire as you listen to this record which suggests he is an enigmatic figure who channels the spirit of blaxploitation icons into the digital era, fusing 90s lyrical prowess with futuristic swagger. In an age craving authenticity, Seafood Sam emerges as a beacon of modern heroism.

Review: The long beloved Balance series of DJ mixes gathers two prominent figures in the history of dance music for this one episode - Dave Seaman & Quivver. The two are paired up for this double CD set that also features two new tracks to make this project even more appetising. Both Dave Seaman and John Graham aka Quivver have over 30 plus years in the business each, with DJ gigs and credits lists that go on for days to read and their experience shows here. Highlights include Dave's heavy driving remix of 'Low Burn' by Underworld, Ben Archbold's epic 'Psychedelic Halo' and Timo Maas's bass heavy remix of Polaroit's 'Apart'. Dave and Quivver's mixing is flawless as usual - their ability to take a handful of strong tracks and make an epic journey is something they have earned their stripes doing, now you can experience it from the comfort of your living room.

Nu Zau - "I See You" (8:29)
Review: Nu Zau & Sepp return to Gettraum after previously featuring on the label's recent compilation, this time with more of their groovy tech house sounds. Sepp kicks off with 'Recognize That' which pairs acid-tinged synths with thumping drums and some nice analogue percussive clatter. On the flip, Nu Zau's 'I See You' is a balmy, breezy cut with dubby low ends, silvery tech drums and nice fractured vocals stretched throughout the mix next to happy melodies. The label head Traumer steps up to remix and flips this one into a deeper, more heads-down cut for the late-night hours.

Review: In 2024 urban and club are often interchangeable terms. Both are also painfully reductive, but that's a point for another time. Los Angeles-based vocalist and producer serpentwithfeet is a case in point, an artist who deftly weaves together sexy and seductive with nightlife energy, proving not only the breadth of each canon but also how much ground they can share. While this may not be unfamiliar, it's relatively new ground for the man with the mic in question, whose previous exploits have often been rooted in gospel tones, nodding to his own upbringing in a religious household. GRIP is musically revelatory in that sense, then, and impeccably crafted.

Review: This is the sole recording of a fleeting guitar sextet from Caracas, Venezuela. Led by Moises "Ajoporro" Daubetire, who later founded the renowned Grupo Mango, it marks his debut in the record market. Released amidst the waning boogaloo craze of the late 60s, the LP initially garnered little attention. Yet, it has since become a coveted collector's item. Its simply arranged tracks exude charm, with standout performances like the lively guaracha 'Ahorita No' and the rhythmic guaguanco 'Rico Guaguanco.' Despite its initial obscurity, this record remains a gem, beckoning listeners to explore its musical treasures.

Sexxy Dexx - "Revelry" (4:08)
Delores Galore - "Whats It Bout To Be" (3:45)
Review: Sexxy Dexx's 'Revelry' transports listeners back to the heyday of 80s funk and soul with its infectious energy and undeniable groove. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Prince, the track exudes a playful sensuality that is perfect for the dance floor. With its catchy hooks and pulsating rhythms, 'Revelry' captivates from the first note to the last, ensuring that feet will be tapping and hips will be swaying all night long. On the flip side, Delores Galore's 'What's It Bout To Be' brings a modern twist to the electro-funk genre, blending infectious beats with soulful melodies and seductive vocals. The result is a dance track that is as irresistible as it is memorable. Together, these two singles offer a tantalizing glimpse into the vibrant world of funk-infused pop, proving that the spirit of the 80s is alive and thriving in today's music scene.

Review: British jazz musician Shabaka Hutchings releases his sophomore album 'Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace', set to be another distinctive ribbon on top of his well-decorated jazz career including collaborations with Andre 3000 and being a member of Sons of Kemet. The LP marks Hutchings' return to music after giving up the saxophone a year ago. Here he returns to his original instrumental calling, the clarinet, but a wide array of wind and percussion punctuates his musings. Opening track 'End of Innocence', is a brief and understated clarinet and piano marriage. The reverberation of the keys softly drones behind the masterfully precise clarinet lead, with perfectly placed percussion sprinkled throughout. It's introspective, serene and understated - a supremely narrative feel that only instrumental jazz can give off. This pressing is the indie-exclusive red-coloured disc.

Review: Composer and multi-instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings releases his sophomore LP Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace', building on his increasingly impressive career working with Andre 3000, Sun Ra Arkestra and heading multiple bands - not least the, now dissolved, The Comet is Coming. The album marks the king's return to music, following his abandonment of the saxophone in 2023. Here he returns to his original instrumental calling, the clarinet, but a wide array of wind is on offer. The first single, the opening track 'End of Innocence', is a succinct clarinet and piano marriage. Song Of The Motherland
Review: Shabaka Hutchings' Perceive Its Beauty is a profound and meditative musical journey that celebrates the richness and grace of African culture. Through a diverse ensemble of renowned musicians, Hutchings invites us to immerse ourselves in a sonic landscape that evokes the beauty and bounty of the Motherland. The album's meditative quality stems from the restraint and collective nature of its creation. The instruments seem to float effortlessly, creating a sonic cloud that carries echoes of Afro-Asian music and the tranquil sounds of nature. Yet, within this understated atmosphere, individual brilliance shines through. The artistry of Jason Moran on the piano and the ethereal voices of Moses Sumney and Eska add layers of nuance and emotional depth. In an era often marked by division and disharmony, Perceive Its Beauty offers a refuge of unity and peace. It invites us to transcend superficial boundaries and embrace the beauty and grace that resides within and around us.

Review: Joseph Shabason, Matthew Sage, and Nicholas Krgovich form a harmonious triangle, both musically and geographically. Hailing from Toronto, Colorado, and Vancouver respectively, they converged at Sage's barn studio nestled at the foot of the Rockies to explore their shared talent for finding beauty in life's mundane moments. Shabason, known for blending late 80s adult-contemporary and smooth jazz aesthetics into ethereal soundscapes, joins forces with Sage, who combines instrumental prowess with synthesis and field recordings to evoke the natural world's whimsy and profundity. Completing the trio is Krgovich, whose observational poetics add a relatable touch to their calm expressionism. Their collaborative album, warmly Shabason, Krgovich, Sage extends the wry and melancholic micro-miracles established in their previous works.

It is a rather enchaining listen that draws on many different rap eras and blends them into one new sound helmed by vocalist and producer Ismael Butler. Review: Shabazz Palaces is masterminded by vocalist and producer Ishmael Butler, whose unstinting drive to reimagine hip-hop - even as he enters his fifth decade on Earth - remains undimmed. With Robed In Rareness, there's a respectful eye on the past, an embrace of an ever-evolving present, and two feet firmly planted in the future. It features collaborations with the likes of Seattle's Royce The Choice and Porter Ray, Colorado Springs' O Finess, Bronx's Geechi Suede (of Camp Lo) and Butler's son, the incomparable Lil Tracy. Most instrumentals land like slick, soft jaunts over which mega-chorused flows oxbow, while weird subversions of hip-hop's trademark braggadocio and opulence are heard throughout. Palaces' cloudiest project yet, this one oozes alt enjoyment from start to finish.

Taking after Chicago and garage house, A-siders 'The Messiah' and 'It Started In Chicago' impress with their full-bodied reveries and beeping repetitions, but neither match the transcendent stringwork, chord progressive poignancies and vocal samply ingenuity of the B1 'How Does It Feel', sure, by our word, to become a modern classic. 'Changes' closes on an indeterminate progressive mood, bridging the gap between styles in a way we don't think we've heard before.

One such project was Sa-Re-Ga Machan, first released in 1981, and which lent a jungle-safari theme to the already established electronic rock fusions he'd laid down on his earlier self-titled record. Seguing through rollicking, schools-out psychedelic odysseys, not to mention humid, wonderfully sublime tropical soundscapes on which we can't tell what's synthetic and what isn't, this is an worthy new reissue from Life Goes On; worth every penny.

Many consider him to be one of the most important movie composers in the last half century. And his credits are impressive to say the least. Not to be outdone, is the soundtrack for the cult classic Se7en starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Howard Shore's award-winning compositions for this as well as The Lord of the Rings trilogy have captivated audiences worldwide, often accompanied by live film screenings. The meticulous attention to detail in bringing Tolkien's world to life through music is legendary, incorporating diverse musical styles and instruments to evoke the rich landscapes and characters of Middle-earth. From 'Song Of The Lonely Mountain' to 'Protector Of The Common Folk', this journey through cinematic composing is truly extraordinary.

Review: The London collective, Shovel Dance Collective, breathes new life into folk music with their album The Water Is the Shovel of the Shore. Embracing folk song as a living tradition, not a relic, they connect centuries-old songs to modern struggles. Through haunting vocal performances and sparse instrumentation - utilising hammered dulcimer, bowed cittern, and pump organ - they evoke a deeper, stranger antiquity. The album's collage-like presentation, interspersed with field recordings, adds contemporary resonance to traditional pieces from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Guyana. The cumulative effect is both mesmerising and uncanny, reminiscent of the films of Robert Eggers. Shovel Dance Collective's emphasis on authenticity and inclusivity, as well as their non-hierarchical approach, adds depth to their reinterpretations. Whether delving into historical narratives or exploring themes of liberation and solidarity, their music speaks volumes. The Water Is the Shovel of the Shore is powerhouse of traditional music in today's world.

His Teenage Catalog is a superbly sophisticated house outing that looks to the traditions of the likes of DJ Sprinkles and the smoky depths of German label Dial. This artist showed his chic sounds in fine style with his acclaimed album Zapoi And Other Dysfunctional Love Stories here in 2021 and now offers up five more mesmerising tracks, including the captivating 'Going Home' and the mysterious 'R2D2 Secret Lover.' The album included the Grammy-winning smash hit 'Fly Robin Fly,' which topped both the disco and pop charts for weeks and became the band's signature song. Now, Omnivore Recordings and Good Time Records present an expanded reissue of this classic debut, featuring five bonus tracks and insightful liner notes detailing the album's genesis and global impact. With its original international cover art and a 12-page color booklet filled with photos and ephemera, this reissue is a must-have for fans of Eurodisco and music history enthusiasts alike.

Review: In the realm of electronic music, Silver Fox's Dread by Dawn emerges as a captivating time capsule from the golden age of jungle and hardcore. Originally released in 1993 and meticulously reissued in 2024, this rare gem has lost none of its potency. The album's four tracks exude a haunting and otherworldly atmosphere, characterized by ominous doom-infused soundscapes and unmistakable jungle and hardcore rhythms. Central to the album's allure is its masterful utilization of the iconic "amen break," a drum loop that has become synonymous with the genre. Silver Fox weaves this pulsating rhythm into a mesmerizing tapestry of dark and melodic samples, including ethereal voices and haunting sci-fi elements. The result is a deeply hypnotic and immersive listening experience that transports listeners back to the halcyon days of electronic music's boundary-pushing experiments.

Review: Nancy Sinatra's sophomore album, How Does That Grab You?, solidifies her status as a pop icon. Released in 1966, it features the iconic title track, a top ten hit that encapsulates her sultry and playful style. Another standout is 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),' later made infamous by its inclusion in Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill' films. Sinatra's collaboration with Lee Hazlewood brings a cinematic quality to her songs, creating a haunting and ethereal atmosphere. "How Does That Grab You?" showcases Sinatra's versatility, from the catchy pop melodies to the dramatic ballads, cementing as a legendary performer.

His music is widely considered new folk but he operates differently to most, infusing various sounds like chimes, percussive elements and layered drones and here features nine new songs that explore a strictly more soundtrack approach than anything he's done before. The result is riveting, with tracks like 'Summer's Last Rays' busy tonal compositions where multiple instruments and percussion blend together to a triumphant crescendo. Whether something left on in the background and absorbing your full attention, this works well and the evolution of the band's sound is exciting. With over 25 albums to their credits, this may be their most experimental and groundbreaking yet.

He has roasted pretty exclusively here and never fails to innovate with each new drop. This one again hits the mark across seven elastic techno cuts that are underpinned by lovely dub weight and propelled by tight, pinging kicks. 'Dachtekker' is lit up with hi-tek soul synths straight from Detroit, 'Double Standard' is deliciously deep and driving with swirling pads smeared around up top and 'Small Stone S700' manages to pair soul-drenched chords full of subtle joy with kinetic drum programming that makes you want to move. Review: Currently back at full activity, and most recently releasing their latest album Il Tradimento Silenzioso (The Silent Betrayal) in 2022, Manchester punk pioneers Slaughter & The Dogs first made their name through their connections to former Joy Division manager Rob Gretton, while their opening slot for the Sex Pistols in Manchester on July 20, 1976 (the second of their two Free Tree Hall shows within two months) played a hand in expanding the city's punk movement before extending to a UK-wide phenomenon. Originally released in 1980, Bite Back served as the feral follow up to the band's quintessential 1978 debut full-length Do It Dog Style, and continued their blistering run of playfully chaotic anthems. Back on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing, this newly refurbished reissue comes with the double A-side of 'I'm The One' b/w 'One By One' as bonus tracks.

Review: Though he was already famous, Either/Or is the album that made Elliott Smith great. Now Kill Rock Stars proudly present their newly reissued, expanded edition of the sensitive songster's crowning glory, this time including five live multi-track recordings from the Yo Yo A Go Go Festival in Olympia, WA in 1997, as well as three previously unreleased studio recordings, not to mention one B-side gem. The album was highly praised at the time due to several of its songs' lucky inclusion by Gus Van Sant in the classic drama movie Good Will Hunting, though the album's appeal goes much deeper than that, with Smith's melancholic, sombre voice soaring low above well-glued, unplugged pop mixes, though, typically for Smith, it still touches on existential, philosophical and neurotic themes throughout.

Review: Mr Bongo continues to take us deep into the recorded work of Lonnie Smith with the reissue of this 1975 LP from the legendary jazz organist. It's an expansive, daring soul-jazz excursion which embellishes the heavyweight grooves with experimental, discordant tones which reach extraterrestrial heights, not least on the eyes-closed escapism of 'Spirits Free'. While Smith may have turned his hand to smoother sounds at certain points in his career, this is testament to the impact free jazz had on his development through the 70s. Crucially though, the music never derails into pure chaos, and the soulful sentiment of the music shines through even in its wildest stretches.

Review: The Sokratis Votskos Quartet features Kostas Anastasiadis and Giorgos Klountzos on drums, Leandros Pasias on piano, Vaggelis Vrachnos on contrabass and Sokratis Votskos on soprano sax, bass clarinet and composition and they have a fulsome and electrifying jazz sound that pays homage to greats of the genre such as Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. This album celebrates life with expressionistic solos, sweeping arrangements and plenty of off-grid rhythmic drama, all of which was recorded during the challenging COVID-era and no doubt distils the highs and lows of those times into the music.

Up first is the main theme from 1974's subway hijack movie The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three and it is one with a funky, jazzy, high-octane sound that has been sampled by Company Flow, Mix Master Mike and many more. On the backside is an edit of a tune from Manfred Mann Chapter Three's self-titled 1969 LP. This one has been famously sampled by The Prodigy. Another great little 7".

'Distance Problems' is the title track for the EP and definitely stands out. The deep ambient acid that gives way for a brisk dancefloor knockout is pure sublime producing. 'Fade To Green' is a stunning atmospheric jam that verges on a beautiful acid trance sunset. On Side-2, 'Vanessa' is a floaty ambient techno track that you we just can't get enough of listening here at HQ. Just when we thought we couldn't be any happier, Romanian producer adds his Midas touch to the remix. If you like spacey techno, then suit up.

Review: Dele Sosimi, UK Afrobeat maestro and former member of Fela Kuti's band Egypt 80, keeps the stylistic flame well alive with his new LP, The Confluence, made in collaboration with The Estuary 21 aka. Sam Duckworth. Sosimi is usually heard focusing on the more eventidal moods of Afrobeat, asking the listener to imagine the genre in a more serene state of flow, in contrast to Kuti's original hip-swaying histrionics; his hedonic rancour. Following 2023's 'The Confluence' EP, the eponymous LP follows and hears the Hackney-born hero and the prolific pop producer team up for a multi-alias exploration, with Duckworth donning his alternate Get Cape Wear Cape Fly moniker many times throughout and flaunting the absolute best of his production chops.

The former track is an androgyne vocal soul, car-stereo'ed burst of joy, on which, despite the overarching feel of ecstasy, we hear duetting singers Anita Louis' and John Colbert's lyrics sing of remaining in one's comfort zone, which depending on the interpretation could either be heard as sardonic or earnest. Sylvia and co.'s B-side sounds as great as ever, being the breathy, flirtatious number it always was, yet with its best elements fleshed out ever-further by this 7" pressing.

Following earlier, acclaimed tributes the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Mos Def, the new 'Dues and Don'ts' b/w 'Fraud Fades' 45 features two, all-original jazz-funk groovers by the Amsterdam-based keyboardist and producer. The former track burns slowly, carefully building up around a harpsichord improv, Herbie Hancock style, coming heavy-set by a thick and booming drum backing that soon enough late-blossoms into a cinematic, stringed soaring-on-high. The latter track pays complementary homage to the funk drum breaks of yore, with the central drum line around which the track is built echoing Serge Gainsbourg or Clyde Stubblefield, albeit making conspicuous its own electronically sequenced, not entirely live-performed, feel.

Dov'eri Sabato Sera narrates a tale of unrequited love, weaving crisp rhythms and wistful melodies into a captivating narrative of youth and dashed hopes. Review: More Specials is the second studio album from the Coventry band, originaly released in 1980 and reportedly splitting opinion among their fanbase, although it's come to be seen as a classic containing many of their best loved songs, from ska knees up 'Enjoy Yourself' to the deadpan reggae of 'Do Nothing'. Produced by the band's own keyboardist Jerry Dammers, it had a more eclectic and less obviously punk sound than its Elvis Costello-produced predecessor, with the band's constant disagreements on the direction of the sound proving a creative rather destructive force here, even if it would - barely more than a year later - cause them to eventually split.
