Following on from 2021's insidious and unsettling full-length LP Feel, the band return with Disgraced Emanations From A Tranquil State; a monolithic opus set to eclipse any of the muted hope of their previous material. Dissecting forms of early psychedelic proto-doom, but with the sole intention of re-channelling those fuzzed out sonics into abyssal swathes of complex, heaving dread, this isn't your beer-chugging, whiplash-headbanging gross out death metal (while there's always a place for that). Rather, this is a cosmic realm of Lovecraftian variety, designed to enthral, impress, touch, harrow, and haunt in equal measure. Review: Given Tornado Wallace's impeccable Balearic credentials, you'd expect his new A.S.O project - a collaboration with Berlin-based singer-songwriter Alisia Seror O'Neill AKA Alias Error - to tend towards the dreamy, immersive and emotive. Review: Tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen made his debut splash when he was just 20 years old, impressing all those around him with the incendiary Guilde Du Jazz: 1957 album. Across the album, laggard, carefree swing and roomy bop abounded stylistically, leading one of his major inspirations, Miles Davis, to remark: "this is the best tenor saxophone I've heard in Europe; he plays tenor in an authentic way, much better than many current stars in the States." Unfortunately, this record was not widely distributed in Wilens' native France because he was under contract with the French label Vogue. Now reissued in its true home country under the wing of Sam Records, Wilen's Guilde is returns as an impressive portrayal of the saxophonist's aptitude for wild, ghostly playing, which succeeds in evoking a feeling of the uncanny despite its jubilant style.

They infused their music with skate funk, which means they somewhat deviated from hardcore norms at the time. Arabesque monologues in her native French soar over warblingly warm arpeggios, which sound ready-primed for traversals of Transylvania, while the more languid cuts make use of impressively synthetic emulations of what could otherwise sound like affectedly acoustic instruments, such as the "harmonica" on 'En attendant l'aube'. This is a welcome unearthing of an otherwise unconscious album, made in the space between REM sleep and authentic, out-of-the-limelight living.

Soma was recorded in Lisbon over a three-day jam session that saw him asking plenty of top local Lisbon-based musicians to improvise over rhythmic frameworks. Review: American jazz drummer Roy Brooks lit a fire under his career when he joined the Horace Silver Combo in the early 1960s; such was the foot in the door that it allowed him to join a multitude of later bands and projects of esteem, including those led by Stanley Turrentine, Yusef Lateef and Charles Mingus. Perhaps it was this early exposure to multiplicity that saw to his incredible collective magnum opus (by then having formed his own band, the Artistic Truth), Black Survival, a live album recorded in 1974 that outwardly heard Brooks' then newfangled sense of spirituality at the time, not to mention his anti-war thematic focus, overflows of emotion, and glorious monologues in favour of peace and unity. One for the spiritual jazz heads, we'd say you can hardly call yourself one if you haven't checked this one out.

Review: Originally released in 1984 by Touch & Go Records, Psychic was the startling debut album by a then largely unknown Butthole Surfers. And it laid out their stall pretty convincingly, with elements that nodded to the psychedelia implied in the title, but the record largely rooted in more 'traditional' punk sounds, the emerging surf-skate scene, and, to a lesser extent, country rock. Listening back now, and the collection has lost little of its original impact. From the moment you hit play, you know this is going to be an uncompromising and unstoppable assault on the senses, throwing weird effects, cunning tape edits, samples of Spanish radio stations, spit and (probably) blood into the mix. A reminder of a much more visceral and unleashed time in the history of music, to revisit is both joy and lamentation.

Review: A great choice by Music On Vinyl - whom at this point have proven their mettle at sating the desires of almost any type of past music enjoyer - Chapterhouse's 'Whirlpool' is the debut studio album by the English shoegaze band, and thoroughly deserves this case of retrospection. In just nine tracks, the quartet of Andrew Sheriff, Stephen Patman, Simon Rowe and Ashley Bates established a hugely maximal sound, stylistically nailing the form by pairing its vacuuming vocal washes with more propulsive, hard-limited mixes and masters, informed by industrial and dance music most notably. Contemporaries of similarly tersely-named bands like Lush, Moose, Ride and Curve, Chapterhouse were indeed the most multi-syllabic, not to mention least restrained band out at the time; standouts 'Pearl', 'Autosleeper' and 'Falling Down' nailed the explosion of '90s indie ferment and the overflow of emotions that came with the decade.
