Review: Helmed by The Haggis Horns saxophonist Rob Mitchell, the Abstract Orchestra is a "hip-hop big band" from Leeds that specializes in jazz-fired cover versions of classic head-nodding beats. Having first impressed with a set of J Dilla interpretations in 2017, last year they turned their attention to Madlib and MF Doom's collaborative Madvillain project. As the title suggests "Madvillain 2" picks up where its predecessor left off, offering up sumptuously orchestrated, funk-fuelled and jazz-wise takes on such familiar cuts as "Meat Grinder", "Rainbows", 'Fire In The Hole" and "Operation Lifesaver". There's a tasty bonus cut, too, in the shape of the Abstract Orchestra's remix of their collab with Dabrye and MF Doom (yes, that MF Doom), "Air".

Review: Three years have passed since Alessandro Adriani impressed with his debut album, an industrial, EBM, techno and neo-trance inspired set that marked the Berlin-based Italian as a producer on the rise. "Morphic Dreams", his belated sequel, may explore some of the same influences, but Adriani's vision seems far more widescreen. Check, for example, the decaying urban ambience of "Casting The Runes", the buzzing and bubbling synth-wave throb of "Raindance", the tactile slo-mo bliss of Simon Crab collab "Dust/Mist" and the grandiose, rising intensity of dystopian soundscape "Crow". There are, of course, a number of muscular, EBM-influenced club cuts, with the Nitzer Ebb-esque "Dissolving Images" and fizzing "Storm Tree" standing out.

Review: There's a decidedly rushing, saucer-eyed feel to Ellen Allien's latest album, her eighth since launching the BPitch Control label at the dawn of the century. The Berlin veteran shows no desire to soften her sound or move away from the dancefloor, delivering an eight-track set that giddily charges between neo-trance (the loved-up "Empathy" and tech-trance throb-job "Free Society"), post-dubstep electro (the swirling "MDMA" and atmospheric "Exit To Humanity"), raging acid ("Bowie In Harmony"), decidedly muscular techno (the arpeggio-driven heaviness of acid fired smasher "Love Distortion" and the creepier "Electronic Joy") and bubbly acid electro (superb closing cut "Stimulation").

Review: Never too shy for irony, Australian rock band from Melbourne, Amyl and The Sniffers, are keeping the mullet cuts and beer spitting sound of the southern land's sound well alive. It's Rough Trade that have taken up Amyl and The Sniffers for their debut album recorded in Sheffield with Ross Orton towards the end of 2018. Six months on and the four piece are rattling the walls more than ever with a raucous ballyhoo of garage-punk that sees the band's ferocious Pouges-y mix of Irish drunkenness hit the wall with the Californian sounds of Pennywise and Australia's own Frenzal Rhomb. With thrashings of guitars, unique and raw Australianisms, and sweaty, smashing drums: Amyl and The Sniffers are popping off.

Review: There's plenty of anticipation around Big Thief's third record U.F.O.F., and we can say with confidence that it delivers on every front. A solid expansion of their last record, Capacity, U.F.O.F. for the most part goes deeper into diverse sonic territories that's emotionally raw and rich, calling to mind Elliott Smith, Joni Mitchell and various other accomplished singer songwriters especially in songs like "Contact" and "Cattails". Elsewhere, "Strange" and "Orange" provide a backing that seems more upbeat on the surface, yet the varied vocal technique of Adrianne Lenker, ranging from a whisper to a vulnerable bellow keeps us firmly captivated. The album really shines through when it reaches for slightly louder soundscapes, best heard on "Terminal Paradise" and "Jenni" (with the latter reminding us of "Washer" by Slint). All in all, U.F.O.F. will be a record that entrances you with its subtle yet haunting charm.

Review: When it comes to plugging in mega stacks of amplified prog-rock, Vancouver-area band Black Mountain deliver a retro-futuristic sound that's as large as any Godzilla soundtrack. With Destroyer presenting a fifth LP on Bloomington label Jagjaguwar, Black Mountain go someway in delivering a bold cross reference of only the best and most legendary points of 60s, 70s and 90s rock n roll regalia. With keys and piano mixed with guitars, distortion and vocoders giving the band a futuristic, krautrock (Deutsche elektronik musik) edge, British psychedelic and raw but atmospheric arrangements give the band their own undeniable identity. With songs passing the bottle from slow dancing rock, flashy hair metal, to synthy guitars and cosmic arpeggios, the best metal of today is still way up there, on Black Mountain.

Review: While producer Patrick Adams made many records during the disco era, none were more intergalactic in tone and synthesizer-heavy in execution than those he released under the Cloud One alias. Effectively an interchangeable studio band with Adams at the helm, Cloud One's two albums and umpteen singles were inspired, spacey and often deliciously eccentric - as this fine "best of" proves. Disc one draws together stone cold classics and lesser-known album cuts (think "Atmosphere Strut", the brilliant "Disco Juice", "Happy Music" and deliciously out-there "Spaced Out"), while the second CD explores alternative versions, lengthy club cuts and much-edited anthems ("Flying High", here included in two equally impressive variations).

Review: Following the release of his last album of synthesizer-driven imagined sci-fi themes, 2017's "Iteration", Seth Haley AKA Com Truise set about rebuilding his studio, refreshing his palette of sounds and developing a new approach. The result is "Persuasion System", a set of unsurprisingly synthesizer-driven tracks that feels warmer and more human than much of the producer's previous work. Of course, Haley's seemingly inherent melodiousness and obsession with bold aural colours remains at the forefront throughout, meaning that even more bittersweet moments - see "Ultrafiche Of You", "Privilege Escalation" and opaque ambient moments "Gaussian" and "Departure" - will leave listeners feeling suitably warm and fuzzy inside.

Review: Last year Stacey Pullen delivered the debut mix in the "Detroit Love" series, offering up a set that channeled "the spirit of the Motor City". 12 months on, label boss Carl Craig offers up the follow-up, delivering a two-disc set that flits between original Detroit jams and tracks by those who draw influence from the city's deep electronic music heritage. It's an interesting journey, with the Planet E founder devoting the first disc to bold, warehouse-friendly variants of chunky house music (think Waajeed, Claude Von Stoke, Delano Smith and Floorplan remixing Sophie Lloyd). It's the second disc, though, that showcases Craig at his very best. Here the veteran producer charges through quality techno cuts from the likes of Ataxia, Brain, Ectomorph and British scene stalwart Mr G.

Review: After a four-year break from recording, acclaimed live outfit Crazy P returns with their ninth studio album. It may be 22 years since Jim Baron and Chris Todd founded the band as a jazz-funk, disco and deep house loving studio project, but "Age Of The Ego" is every bit as vibrant and relevant as any of their previous albums. In general it's a little more electronic and synthesizer-driven than some of their previous sets, with notable nods towards Italo-disco, synth-pop, electro and P-funk, but the constant presence of longtime lead vocalist Danielle Moore and their trademark attention to musical details means that the album never feels like a giant stylistic leap. In simple terms, the songs are as colourful, vibrant and entertaining as you'd expect.
