Review: In late 2016, Lobster Theremin launched their new sub-label: the ambient, drone and experimental electronics offshoot Lobster Sleep Sequence. After label head Jimmy Asquith came across Thet Liturgiske Owasendet's immense ambient epic "Catalina" on Soundcloud, it soon became 'a staple cure to a bout of recent prolonged sleeplessness and mild insomnia that he'd been unable to shake via any other means.' For the label's second release we have Richard Vergez's Night Foundation project, which launched in 2016. Already part of the Lobster network as graphic designer for Raw MT and Hedge Maze's releases, it wasn't long before Asquith soon came across Vergez's new project and decided to release it. Formed of three separate parts, Memory Bells is a mesmerising and evocative body of work.

  1. Shine (6:14)

  4. Atom (9:00)
Review: With acclaimed releases on Mork, Lobster Theremin, Delsin and Pacific Command already under his belt, nthng is on the fast track to top-tier success. Much of the producer's reputation has been built on adaptability, with previous releases mixing and matching various strains of techno, electro and lo-fi house. His second appearance on Transatlantic brings with it another stylistic shift. Seemingly born out of early morning studio sessions and late night drifts into daydreaming, the four tracks that make up "Shine" brilliantly fuse elements of Pete Namlook style deep space ambient (see "Shine"), gradually unfurling, Global Communication style soundscapes ("Atom") and unfeasibly deep, out-there ambient techno ("Embryo", "Lyla").

Cat: LTNC 006. Rel: 06 Apr 16
  1. OK Face (4:23)
  2. Aphrobite (6:09)
  3. Morning Loving (5:27)
  4. M_Animal (4:07)
Review: Fresh from delivering a fine album of experimental electronics for Further Records (the ambient leaning Hyperboreal), Manuel Fogliata pops up Parisian imprint Latency with a pleasingly varied four-tracker. As if to emphasize his techno roots, he begins with something big and heavy - the pulsating rhythm, fluttering deep space electronics and hypnotic dancefloor intensity of "OK Face". Fogliata further proves his techno credentials with the rather brilliant "Morning Loving", a decidedly picturesque chunk of ambient techno that's both danceable, and aesthetically pleasing. Elsewhere, he pauses for a breather via the delay-laden beauty of ambient cut "Aphrobite", and wanders into trippy modular synthesizer territory on the beat-less "M_Animal".

Arc 1 (12'')
Cat: MVARC 1. Rel: 04 Jul 19
  1. Ambient City 1994 (part 1) (20:12)
  2. Ambient City 1994 (part 2) (13:15)
Review: Sahko has decided to offer up a series of releases focusing on choice unreleased works from the late, great Mika Vainio's archives. The first, "Arc 1", showcases a 32-minute piece (here split into two parts to fit on one record) originally recorded in 1994 for his Ambient City radio project at Helsinki's Museum of Contemporary Art. It's a sparse, stripped back affair, with Vainio alternating between drowsy, elongated ambient chords, crackling drones, fuzzy white noise, doom-laden tones, creepy sonic movements and hushed moments of intense electronic bliss. It's not Vainio's most blissful work, but it is hugely enjoyable; an experimental ambient journey that's arguably darker and more unsettling than many of his records as O.

Review: No one knows who One Day is. No one knows what the title of this EP is called. No one knows what the tracks are called. But we know that this is Office... And everything Baaz's Berlin-based label puts out has a great deal of detail invested in it and always requires attention. This is no exception as the mysterious vibe maestro takes us from warm, jazz-tinged chugging deep house to cascading aquatic ambience that bubbles and pops dreamily via fuzzy, springy downtempo. Who knows who's behind this masterpiece? Maybe One Day we'll find out...

Review: Conoley Ospovat, having crossed paths with deep heads like Pier Bucci, Pablo Bolivar, and Area, now turns up with a fully-realized EP for Kimochi. Solitude is a pulsing meditation, but with the rays of sunshine breaking throughout, it's clear that if it's alone, it's not lonely. The springtime sounds are full of optimism as well as introspection. Ambient house for the adventurous.

Review: Made in the winter and spring of 2018 in 'edenic' Altadena, California: P & D Records co-founder (and Suzanne Kraft collaborator) P Relief is back with the label's third release. The now Berlin based producer serves up dreamy and mesmerizing lo-fi house on the splendid Idlehour EP, as heard on terrific jams such as the wonderful opener "Club Fever" while the zeitgeist of early '90s IDM is captured stylishly on the mysterious "Broken Bell" as well as on the dreamy, ambient house "Lolli".

  1. Learned Behaviour (6:16)
  2. Dimished Feeling (4:57)
  3. Looking Outside (4:14)
Review: Chicago born, Brooklyn based producer Max Ravitz is quite known for his dusty goth(am) house and techno experiments; easily recognised by their brazenly compressed/saturated analogue aesthetic that sound like live jams. It's more of the same on his new offering: A side cut "Learned Behaviour" is the most 'straight-ahead' we've ever heard Ravitz with this tunnelling, hypnotic and absolutely heads down affair that soon evolves via some classic house chord progressions and mad 909 snare theatrics. The bittersweet and melancholic "Diminished Feeling" is more typical of his earlier style on such heralded EPs like his Opal Tapes debut Body Issues: the sound of a lonely Bushwick loft space on a Friday night. The lush and atmospheric "Looking Outside" provides a welcome ambient moment for this fine EP. Yet more fantastic work from him this year, following up the three part epic Several Shades of The Same Color on Ghostly International.

Review: Plants Army Revolver debut on Avian. The Italian live act will join Avian for a five track EP showcasing the pair's breadth as producers. Working within the bounds of a carefully refined sound palette, Marco Ragni & Birgan Valentin look to the more muted, tentatively melodic end of loop Techno, with excursions into washed out Ambient & leftfield Electronica, placing the focus on sound texture & tone.

Review: Andrea Porcu's ROHS! label has been a long time fixture in the ambient field, from net label origins to limited CDr and vinyl releases from a host of respected underground operators. This latest release, two years in the making, features two original tracks from PURL. These sublime ambient pieces, "Slow Poem" and "Cellar Door," move in slow, atmospheric ripples of submerged rhythm and glacial melodics, giving plenty of space for inventive remixes from Segue, Wanderwelle and many more. It's a perfect double pack of dreamy drifters for the chill-out room crowd to sink into.

Review: We at Juno HQ originally coined what is now known as the 'grey area', a sub-genre which has flourished in recent years in the post-Autonomic idiom of drum and bass, popularised by groundbreaking underground Berlin imprints such as Samurai Horo, Hidden Hawaii and of course the mysterious Weevil Neighbourhood. Repetition/Distract is Felix Hoeck aka Felix K, who originally released Salles Des Perdus ?in 2012 and it now gets a much needed repress. When you consider more recent releases on the label by the likes of SPR (with his black metal/dark ambient crossover) as well as Steven Porter's Katsunori Sawa who delivered last year's brutal Secret Of Silence LP, you can really trace back the original vision of the label through this EP with its sombre, textured noise experiments reminiscent of early Cold Meat Industries.

  1. Everything Happens For A Reason (5:59)
  2. Lake Nakaumi (7:03)
  3. Lake Nakaumi (Kastil remix) (7:00)
Review: The next signing of Bilbao based Forbidden Colours are modular nerds Kino Internacional and Borja Pineiro from Reykjavik606, who always challenge the fine line between music making and storytelling. On "Everything Happens For A Reason" the duo deliver a sublime serving of electronica which is best described as live drum 'n' bass, really. Smooth Rhodes melodies and dreamy orchestral pads engulf some tight live drumming on this five minute epic. The blissed out ambience of "Lake Nakaumi" follows, where this glacial and mysterious soundscape calls to mind the icy and chilling suspense of works on Canada's Silent Season imprint. Finally the Bilbao based label call in Basque techno leader Kastil for a remix - he serves up seven minutes of straight up hypnotic techno. This follows up great releases on the label from the likes of Andres Aguirre, Eduardo de la Calle and Jun Kimata.

  6. State IX (interlude II) (1:13)
Review: Former Playhouse and Bio Rhythm man Roger Reuter has only one previous album to his name, the woozy, edge-of-reason ambience of 2015's Mensch 001. Extended Play is its' follow up, and sees the experienced German producer appear on Ilian Tape for the first time. Rooted in his usual brand of unsettling, otherworldly ambience, the six tracks variously draw influence from early IDM, drone, dub techno, industrial and experimental film soundtracks. Despite these nods to familiar experimental styles, it's an album that can easily be listened to in a variety of situations, and never drags. It's strongest moments, such as the mournful ambient throb of "State IIX Interlude II", are particularly beguiling.

Bubbles EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DD 005. Rel: 04 Sep 17
  1. Mars Water
  2. Bubbles
  3. How Good Is The Party
  4. Twotet
Review: Dream Diary is a label operating out of Brixton that has previously featured the likes of Afriqua, Tom Gillieron and Richie Littler on its roster, and now it's the turn of the head honcho Oslo Roma to serve up some more of that subversive four-to-the-floor business. "Mars Water" is an infectious minimal roller with bass that wraps itself around your cerebellum and pulls you in deeper, while "Bubbles" does the same but without any drums to buffet it along. "How Good Is The Party" is a more experimental affair that deals with off kilter rhythmic fragments and spaced out textures, leaving EP closer "Twotet" to drop a more immediate slice of electro on the situation.

  5. Rain Sketch
Review: There's only been one other release to date on the aptly titled Night Sea Journey, whose M.O. is, "focused on simplicity." The Chicago label started life with label heads Garrett David and Colin Johnson, and now Adam Rowe has come to join in with his own take on simple approaches in ambient and deep house. "9_27 (edit 1)" may have a lovely sub bass propelling it, but the languorous quality of the keys makes it feel almost static in the best possible way. "8_27 (edit 1)" welcomes some needlepoint drum machine rhythms into the mix, preferring a broken beat over anything too straight. "Nite Houss" has a similar mysterious charm you might hear on a Real Soon record, while "Hanging Lake" swerve into more ambient territory again, with spectacular results.

Review: The ever on-point Kimochi crew has described this label debut from talented Finn Lauri Saine as "a deceptively simple series of compositions that rewards deeper listening". We get what they're saying. One of the EP's greatest strengths is the way the intricate details and subtle layers of Saine's productions creep up on you on the third, fourth or fifth listen. It gives all four cuts a super-deep feel, putting them somewhere between lovely warm-up workouts, horizontal home listening fare and Sprinkles style peak-time hypnotism. Highlights include the sunset-ready jazz-house fluidity of "Swirl", the undulating, wonderfully picturesque ambient shuffle of "Saw U" and the dub-techno influenced soundscape flex of "Babel".

  2. Islands
Review: In the new year things are only getting freakier for the Gravity Graffiti camp as label core member Riccardo Schiro takes the reins once again. "Sine Phase," as the title might well imply, is a focused trip into rhythmic synth modulation with a techno pulse and drippy effects processing guaranteed to soak into your cerebellum. "Islands" charges further into experimental terrain, ditching any semblance of a beat in favour of free-wheeling texture and tone that sounds as though it was wrenched from a particularly fruitful experimental session. As the plot thickens for this ever-intriguing label, our advice is to strap in for the long haul experience.

Review: Sacha Khalife, or simply SHCAA, is a multi-talented electronic music producer from Paris. We know him well, however, namely due to an EP that cam out through NYC's Blank Slate back in 2015. Since then, he's put out one more EP through Archipel, but this is the first time we've welcomed him back onto our charts in 2017. Golconde comes through courtesy of the young Sharingtones imprint, and while this is billed as an EP, the release's 11 tracks give the impression of something much more accomplished. Fair enough, each tune is comparatively short to the usual album tracks, but the likes of "Kohinor", a bluesy, laid back slice of exotica, offer some truly deep vibes. Moreover, it's how each tune fits with the next that has got us hooked from the start, where SCHAA chucks in a subtle house blend like it's nothing, making tunes such as "Mimesis" feel like a natural course of events. On the B-side, this curious yet endlessly pleasing blend of acoustic guitars and tropical house waves continues, climaxing with a bottomless pit o minimalistic drones on "Maelstrom", followed by some glitchy IDM vibes on "Kert". Lush.

Review: Hailing from the dark and mysterious world of Bunker Records, Shemale makes a welcome return after many years of silence with this fantastic release on Tabernacle. "Star Chamber Summoning" sets a powerful tone - this is ambient music that demands attention through its sheer force of presence. "Way To Hyperborea" actually taps up some kind of beat structure, but it still behaves like a wayward backroom track with its undulating bassline and gravelly, brutally submerged beat. "Shores Of The Western Sea" is all analogue soundtrack bombast of the finest B-movie kind, and "Wisdom Of The Stars" strikes a more nightmarish note in its use of discordant synth drones.

Mossafer EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AKS 5. Rel: 05 Feb 18
  1. Industriegebiet (feat Erik Jahaali) (5:54)
  2. Fasseleh (2:53)
  3. Skypainter (feat Erik Jahaali) (7:19)
  4. Dayi Mohsen (4:36)
Review: The Shahr Farang label is always an interesting one to check in with, sometimes veering towards fragile ambience as much as intriguing beat constructions. Here, label mainstay Sohrab invites Erik Jahaali to join in on the tough yet atmospheric thrust of "Industriegebiet", before he goes it alone on the moody beatless blanket of sound that is "Fasseleh". Jahaali is back on board for "Skypainter," which pivots around dusty pads and subtle, snaking rhythms in the deepest techno tradition. "Dayi Mohsen" is the surprise of the record, dropping into a Mo Wax style funk that should soothe all manner of chill out room scenarios.

Review: Lobster Sleep Sequence is developing into a fine label with each new release, with its parent brand - Lobster Theremin - doing its very best to branch out into all corners of the electronic game. This new LP form Sonikku is a delightful deviation of the senses, carrying a noticeable sway of airy melodies without the use of heavy, distorted beats, or gratuitous noise-filtered bric-a-brac. In fact, the majority of this LP is composed of delicate atmospherics showcasing the more placid side of downtempo, offering listeners an ambient texture which successfully merges a whole array of styles and influences together under one banner. Lovely.

Review: Ambient specialists Astral Industries have yet to put a foot wrong, so it's little surprise to find that their latest missive - a label debut from Bernard Zwijzen AKA Sonmi451 - is another must-have release. "Nachtmuziek" gathers together six overlooked tracks from the Belgian's sizable back catalogue, offering a neat introduction to his work for those who may have not come across his often ultra-limited releases for the likes of U-Cover and Time Released Sound. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the Pete Namlook style gentle pulse of "Probe", the crackly, harp-laden "Outer Shell", to the sumptuous chimes of "Inner Structure" and becalmed, slowly unfurling "Bay Hatch".
