Atomos VII
Minuet For Cheap Piano Number One
Atomos VII (Greenhouse re interpretation remix)
Review: Dustin O'Hallaran and Adam Wiltzie have been dealing in musique concrete for a while now, with releases on some of the most daring labels around. However, this latest work on Kranky is undoubtedly a significant step up for the outfit, with people such as Keith Fullerton Whitman having released on the label. Three extended slices of pure hedonism, each one growing and rising in emotion and momentum with each new melody. "Atmos VII" drops you into a tranquil soundscape surrounded by orchestral swirls of melodies and subtle kick drums, and "Minuet For Cheap Piano Number One" prolongs this journey through paradise thanks to some stunning keys and spine-chilling bursts of ambience. Over on the flip, the Greenhouse re-wiring of the title track is equally pensive but considerably more sinister, with an extra dosage of guitar feedback winding its way into the mix. Stunners.

Review: Adam Wiltizie and Dustin O'Halloran return to their A Winged Victory For The Sullen project with a complete edition of all their Atomos works for the electrifying Kranky imprint - the best of homes for cutting-edge sonics and scintillating soundscapes. After a preview 12" of "VII" out earlier this year, this full compilation contains all eleven tracks for your listening pleasure. Blissful drones, neo-classical strings and just the right amount of noise paint a rather special picture. Listen to those violins intertwine so majestically with the powerful electronic backdrops of sound. Lovely stuff.

Review: Comprised of Kranky regulars Mark Nelson, Robert Donne and percussionist Steven Hess, Anjou make their debut on the esteemed Kranky imprint. The trio trade in a unique kind of ethereality, where tracks like "Specimen Question" take you far away into a melodic daze and bring you back to planet earth feeling shaken. Beautiful snippets of field recordings, enchanting voices and a little bit of hardware fuzz created by analogue machinery make up the album's core, and tracks like "Inclosed" feel both sparse and rich at the same time, a characteristic of all the tracks herein.

Review: Upon its release in 2014, Anjou's eponymous debut album was praised on this very site for offering a "unique kind of ethereality" capable of lulling listeners into a "melodic daze". There's a similar feel about this follow-up, which sees the trio of Steven Hess and Labradford duo Mark Nelson and Robert Donne combine drone style sonic textures with gentle electronics, trippy hardware explorations, and effects-laden field recordings. It's perhaps a little more sombre in tone than their debut, but still boasts enough drowsily picturesque moments - see "An Empty Bank", "Georgia" and "Culcinae", in particular - to stave off any dystopian thoughts.

Review: The third album from Canadian composer Christopher Bissonette sees him expanding his palette by narrowing his sound sources to a self built analog synthesizer. Eschewing the whiplash and/or everything including the kitchen sink style of assembly so common among current analog aficionados, Bissonnette instead applies his signature compositional style of using long held tones and sweeping drones that alternate between, and fuse, pure tonal transcendence and patient, sparkling melodies that slowly reveal themselves.

Review: Adam Wiltzie is a member of Windsor for the Derby and Stars of The Lid, and alongside Christina Vantzou he crafted The Dead Texan back in 2004. It now finally gets a reissue which reminds us of its lush and weightless electronic and experimental charms. All 11 tunes are painterly in style with smeared synths and widescreen designs created using piano, guitar and electronic sounds. Piano motifs give an anchor to most of the tracks and there is spiritual gravity in many of them. Two decades old now but still relevant, the is a reissue well worth having.

Review: Newcomer Demen, who goes by the relatively more peaceful name Irma Orm in the real world, appears on the Kranky imprint with a full-blown LP, which is sort of a bold move if you think about it; usually debutants land with an EP, or even a mini LP, but this feels like something much more accomplished. What's more, this really does feel like a complete work from an artist who truly understands the intricacies of constructing something much broader than a single. The Swedish producer's sound is angelic and demonic at the same time, immersing there listener into a cold yet uplifting stratosphere of sounds that make for some truly meditative experiences. Everything is connected and nothing is random here; Demen is in total control of the direction of her music, and its final delivery. This is electronica with a darker twist. Excellent.

Review: Jacob Long's third full length LP under Earthen Sea sees the New Yorker weave together a slew of downtempo tracks, pulling from dub-techno and chillhop sensibilities, in a tracklist that feels like you are in the center of a steel sphere, as tracks like the Lo-Fi 'Stolen Time' and 'Rough Air' reverberate around you. Ochre Sky is a real highlight off the records back half, the mellow timbre and interspersed organic percussion (including a sample of a sink splashing) evokes a slow paced walk through a luscious garden. The material quality of Ghost Poems is what makes it so special, with each of the 10 tracks constituting a different biome to an expansive diorama. From the warm sunbeams of 'Fossil Painting', to the underground lakes of 'Felt Absence' each track has something refreshing to offer.

Review: Having established a reputation on the electronic underground via a series of quietly impressive, low-key releases, Jacob Long brings his Earthen Sea project to Kranky for the first time. An Act of Love is his sixth solo full-length, and sees him exploring both his usual blend of slowly shifting ambience and atmospheric drone movements, and more rhythmic, techno and house influenced workouts. Naturally, even his more forthright, beat-driven moments are still blessed with picturesque chords and drifting melody lines, giving An Act of Love a dreamy, softly spoken feel throughout. There's much beauty to be found throughout, even if Long's becalmed productions don't strive too hard for attention.

Review: Ruins is the 10th LP from Portland artist Grouper, an incredible set that's found it's home on the inimitable and always on- point Kranky label...and yes, it's another fine outing from the voco-noise head. Tracks like "Clearing", however, show another side to Grouper's usual rough edge. There's an element of smoothness to those sombre keys and far-out vocals. It's basically an ambient album with an extra layer of soul in its core - check "Made Of Air" for a seriously trippy set of soundscapes.

Review: Back in 2011, Liz Harris - better known under her artistic alias Grouper - released a pair of albums under the "AIA" banner. The first, "Dream Loss", has already been reissued; here, they offer up the second, "Alien Observer". It partly explores similar sonic territory, where distant-sounding recordings of Harris' voice, synths and evocative guitars are smothered in reverb, field recordings and noise, but also includes a few sharper, more defined moments. Amongst these, we'd suggest checking the sublime title track, a beautifully becalmed and spaced-out fusion of Harris' vocals and delay-laden guitar arpeggio scales, and closer "Come Softly", an even more beautiful and minimalist piece that's nothing less than stunning.

Review: Since first appearing in 2011, Liz Harris' seventh album as Grouper, "AIA: Dream Loss" has become something of a sought-after item. As this vinyl reissue proves, there's a very good reason for that: it's superb. Based around an opaque and cloudy production style that's as trippy as it is oddly comforting, it sees Harris layer up haunting freestyle vocals, droning electronic textures, analogue noise and all manner of acoustic and electric instrumentation - guitars, strings and so on - into a thick sonic soup. While the instrumentation may be distant and downplayed in the mix, that gives it a haunting, ethereal quality.

Review: Steve Hauschildt is no newcomer to the blossoming ambient scene, having released his first album almost a decade ago. In that time, he's earned a reputation for crafting genuinely poignant electronic music that neatly sidesteps ambient's various stylistic cliches. There's plenty to get excited about on this latest full-length - his fourth for venerable Chicago institution Kranky - starting with the sun-bright, Tangerine Dream style synthesizer arpeggios of the brilliant "Same River Twice". Elsewhere, he gets stunningly melancholic on the drifting beauty of "A False Seeming", doffs a cap to Global Communication and Steve Hillage on the glistening positivity of "Ketracel", and gives Pete Namlook a run for his money on the spacey wonder of "Strands".
