CARISTA/VARIOUS
Secretsundaze Mixtape (limited mixed cassette + MP3 download code)
Cat: TAPE 002. Rel: 02 Oct 19
  1. Track 1 (44:05)
  2. Track 2 (44:00)
Review: Secretsundaze return with a second volume of their new mixtape series. After the success of the Joe Claussell tape they turn to Carista for another introspective mix aimed at a relaxed home-listening session.

In May 2018, Carista performed one of her first international gigs at Secretsundaze in London and went on to play 2 other shows for them that year. A year later, she has become a mainstay on the European club & festival circuit, playing to an ever growing, passionate and loyal fanbase week in week out, already playing shows that most DJs would only dream of, including closing a stage at Lowlands festival to an audience of 10000. No wonder a recent Mixmag article crowned her as "A DJ star in the making".

Her residencies on NTS and Red Light Radio showcase her love of house, boogie, broken beat, disco, funk and beyond. Her DJ gigs can also see her explore further into house and techno but this mixtape showcases a different, softer side of Carista blending ambient soundscapes, jazz, dub and soul as well as some poignant words from Nina Simone.

This is Carista's debut physical format release so don't sleep!

Review: This limited-edition double vinyl version of Celer's recent album won't be around for ever, so if you want one you'd best get moving. Not that "getting moving" is something that Celer himself does a great deal of, you understand: rather, beats-free ambient/drone soundscapes are the Japanese-based American producer's stock-in-trade. In fact, he's released over 100 albums of this stuff over the past 15 years - with many tracks consisting of little more than eight or nine minutes of a single, modulated synth chord and layers of dense atmospherics. One for the insomniacs and flotation tank devotees!

Review: Whether offering up dreamy, loved-up synth-pop or languid Balearic beats, Michael Silver's work as CFCF has always tended towards the summery and sun-kissed. Yet even by his high standards, "The Colours Of Life" is extra-special. The album first appeared on Canadian tape/download imprint 1080p back in 2015, becoming something of a cult item amongst ambient and Balearic collectors. The good news is that it's finally made it to wax, and not a moment too soon. The album's mixture of lazy, elongated chords, bubbling synthesizer melodies, soft focus beats, seductive aural textures, gentle new age motifs and occasional heartfelt jazz guitars is a treat for the ears: an aural bubble bath whose sonic smelling salts will tickle and tingle the senses.

Review: After years spent offering up impressive blends of ambient, drone, electronica and experimental drum and bass as ASC, James Clements has decided to commit more time to Comit (sorry), an alternative project which first surfaced via a debut single in 2016. Here the San Diego-based Brit delivers a first full-length excursion under the alias. There's plenty to soothe and seduce on the eight tracks stretched across two slabs of wax, from the undulating, occasionally skittish beats and sweeping chord sequences of opener "Behind Dulled Eyes" and the icy, doom-laden electronic melancholy of "Reverie", to the early Black Dog Productions flex of "Clouded Over" and the dubbed-out, slow motion bliss of "Soft Focus".

Review: Former folk singer Erland Cooper hit the headlines last year with his debut solo album, "Solan Goose", a set paid tribute to the birdlife of his native Orkney Isles via ambient electronics, sweeping neo-classical arrangements, evocative operatic style vocals and intricate, Nils Frahm style piano solos. This sequel - the second part in a promised trilogy - is named after a remote rock formation in the North Atlantic and was apparently inspired by the wild seas that frequently thunder against it. Musically it explores similar territory to its predecessor and is every bit as inspired, with cyclic melodic refrains, lonely string-drenched soundscapes and intricate arrangements conjuring mental images of slow boat journeys to Britain's most far-flung, windswept northern isles.

Review: Trailed as a direct sequel to his previous solo album, 2017's "Avanti", "Volume Massimo" sees Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini offer up another immersive trip through droning guitar textures, repetitive synthesizer motifs, exotic sitar parts and fuzzy electronics. It's effectively a series of "maximal" instrumental soundscapes with sounds so large and layered they rise above the "meditative" tag pushed by Mute's PR team. This is no criticism, though, just a reflection that while contemplative at times, one of the most joyous things about the album is Cortini's ability to build thrilling walls of sound.

Review: We are definitely not worthy. Or at least only just worthy. Arriving on stunning transparent wax this double header from 2000 combines two legendary forces in ambient and stripped compositions, making a very clear statement of intent. Buy it now or forever deal with the fallout. Perhaps one of the most impressive things about the tracks presented in this special edition, limited run package is the sonic depth achieved without forsaking minimalism. There doesn't necessarily appear to be much going on, but the soundcapes- or perhaps more accurately soundscape, given the quartet is wholly coherent and interconnected- feels so dense it's as if you could reach out and touch the work. Growing, building, expanding and mutating, the resulting tension and brooding atmosphere positions this as a crowning achievement on the part of both Finland's Pan Sonic and American Charlemagne Palestine.
