Pulse (12")
Cat: TTT 057. Rel: 13 Mar 17
  1. Pulse (16:53)
  2. High (17:38)
Review: The partnership of Kassem Mosse and Beatrice Dillon; Dillon Wendel is a place for the two respected artists to explore soundscapes, aesthetics and synthesis in pastures aeons away from the dancefloors they're most familiar with. Both compositions weighing in over 15 minutes, they're experiences which challenge form and convention; "Pulse" ripples with its namesake, a texture that buzzes and drones in endless waves while "High" mutates a warmer, grainer tone with dizzying effect.

  1. A Strain A Meter Below
  2. Inter 10 (Dragged Out)
Review: Opal Tapes regular Wanda Group makes the move to Notown with a new pair of aptly disturbed musings that bring an uneasy serenity to the world of industrial noise and found sound experimentation. "A Strain A Meter Below" has a bizarre soulful quality thanks to the distorted vocal that inhabits the track, while drowning piano notes inject some musicality into the spacious surroundings defined only by a distant hum of melody. "Inter 10 (Dragged Out)" is more purposefully ambient, letting harmonious pads drift into mechanics and locomotives of sound and back out again with an eerie calm.

Lost In A Sea Of Trees (repress) (180 gram gatefold double 12")
Cat: SSV 11. Rel: 04 Mar 19

  2. Where The Wind Howls (7:45)
  3. Through The Meadow (6:30)

  6. Eyes In Looming Trees (6:38)
  7. Unholy Grounds (5:00)
  8. The Domovoi (7:38)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Wanderwelle comes to Silent Season to explore immersive techno inspired by the early pagan history of Europe. "The Starry Night" makes for a beautiful opening statement on this point, all gently lilting melodies reaching for an emotional peak and loaded with mystery. "Where The Wind Howls" equally lulls your ears with its patient layers of synths feeding into an implied narrative that works wonderfully with the fantastic artwork on this release. "Through The Meadow" has a more overt new age ambient finish, while "Lured By An Unseen Presence" edges a little dub techno influence into the mix. With all eight tracks feeding into this implied tale, this is an album to listen to from start to finish and truly lose yourself in.

Garuda (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JC 10. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. Garuda
  2. Garuda (Kuniyuki remix)
Review: Japanese guitarist Kazumi Watanabe has been a treasure of leftfield music in the Far East since the 70s, and Jazzy Conscious are doing a great service in highlighting the delicate talents of this gifted artist for a new generation. There's a new age lilt to the looped up melodic chime patterns that course through "Garuda" as they flirt with Watanabe's effervescent playing. Kuniyuki then hops on the B side to deliver a contemporary remix of the track that shapes out a brooding, immersive atmosphere populated by earthly drums and looming reverb.

Lifestream (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 064. Rel: 08 Oct 18
  1. Lifestream (extended mix)
  2. Rain Trek
Review: Clifford White is the kind of 80s curio that Emotional Rescue love so dearly - a bedroom keyboard warrior who happened to catapult to professional studio environs in the blink of an eye. The two tracks pressed up here previously appeared on a 1989 LP in an abridged version - White has returned to both tracks and stretched them out to enhance their playability in the dance. Both "Lifestream" and "Rain Trek" aren't your typical party starters though - rather they're lilting, uplifting synth expressions strapped to a mixable beat. That's exactly why they've been hot property on the Balearic scene for a long time, and now they're available in loud-cut, blissfully extended form for the modern heads to get dreamy to.

  2. About Life & Death
  3. The Party Is Elsewhere
  4. Dearly Beloved
Review: Having only made spotted appearances in the past, icy ambient techno artist Winter In June makes a fine first outing on vinyl with a press of his formerly digi-only EP Eternal Lovers. It's prime Silent Season material, using massive slabs of reverb and a foreboding sense of space as his main weapons while rolling out bleak machine matter that sounds as though it were blown across the tundra. "About Life & Death" is particularly moving with its heart monitor bleeps and forlorn strings, while "The Party Is Elsewhere" is a telling trip into the coldest of coldwave.

  1. Island Breeze (3:42)
  2. Caravan (4:20)
  3. The Odyssey (3:32)
  4. Caravan Revisited (4:20)
Review: The latest volume in Music From Memory's impressive 12" series of reissued obscurities takes us back to late '80s St Louis and the hard to find world of Workdub. Formed of Virgil Work Jnr. and Nicholas Georgieff, Workdub's output was restricted to a pair of highly limited albums recorded between 1989 and 1992. All four tracks are taken from these two albums, and offer a lucid, ear-catching fusion of early ambient house electronics, experimental oriental synth-pop, alien jazz breaks, spacey Detroit influences, and stuttering drum machine rhythms. It's a hard-to-place but wonderfully evocative mixture, arguably best displayed on standout opener "Island Breeze". That said, the curiously Balearic, Tangerine Dream influenced "Caravan" is rather tasty, too, while its' ambient alternative mix, "Caravan Revisited" is almost overpowering in its' simple beauty.

Feminist (10")
Cat: MIRA 004. Rel: 22 Aug 13
  1. Feminist (feat The KVB)
  2. No Expression
  3. Unconscious
  4. Less Distant
Review: Whilst Ventress is less prolific than his Avian co-founder Shifted, he has been responsible for some finely crafted techno in the slate grey, minimalistic vein in recent times. Here Ventress uses his debut on Avian sub label Mira as an opportunity to explore his more experimental side with the full debut of the Worn alias. The cultured ears out there will no doubt be familiar with the Worn approach thanks to a stunning contribution to The KVB Remixes EP released on Cititrax earlier this year, and the lead track on this Feminist EP sees Worn collaborate with The KVB frontman Nicholas Wood. Naturally incorporating elements of The KVB's atmospheric guitars over a fuzz edged synth motif, "Feminist" is complemented by three further productions that slip deep into oppressive drone.

  1. Camaro Husk
  2. Cinder: Shorn
  3. Saline Flats
  4. Ragged One (reprise)
Review: Valcrond Video presents the next work by sound and image artist Luke Wyatt, Songs From Bad Kid School.

On a high desert plain, inside a cinder block compound, a prank squad is incarcerated. Between fiddling with ninja stars and leafing through back issues of Fangoria, they find time to scrape out the soundtrack of their escape.
On the first track, heatsick guitars and steel wool beats suggest a landscape strewn with abandoned car carcasses, old Camaros left for dead in the sun, used for shotgun practice.

The B-side leads off with the beat-less, articulated sprawl of "Saline Flats". Here is the story of a desert search for water: figures warping mirage-like on the horizon as they make a confused journey over dunes, ending with a cathartic drone that suggests the mirages resolving into a real oasis. Though it is just as likely that the bad kids have expired from thirst, and ascended to the sublime.

Review: Efficient Space's latest release is certainly an intriguing one. It was sparked by the discovery of a CD copy of an obscure, mid-'90s album made by the late Victorian musician Peter Mumme and three Aboriginal songmen from the Yolngu people of the Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern territory. Uniquely, the album - here reissued under a new title with an additional unreleased piece - mixed the singers' traditional vocals with impeccable ambient soundscapes, gently pulsating electronic rhythms and the kind of fluid and wide-eyed synthesizer melodies more often found on '80s new age recordings. The results still sound remarkable and, thanks to the Yolngu singing style, surprisingly haunting.

Cat: NNA 068. Rel: 15 Jan 14
  1. How To Learn To Concentrate
  2. No Mouth Or Transparency & Variable Curvature
Review: The hugely prolific Brighton based producer and caps lock enthusiast Louis Johnstone has operated under all manner of guises over the years (The Hers, Dem Hunger, and GG Alien are just three) but seems to have found a creative focus under the name WANDA GROUP. Back in 2011, he made his debut under this name with the Bass Urine cassette for NNA Tapes, and having subsequently graced the likes of Further, Vlek, Opal Tapes and Notown with his dense, abstract musique concrete collages, Johnstone returns to the Vermont label with a new LP. Entitled A Slab About Being Held Captive, it contains two long-form compositions with a near infinite amount of found sound and micro-texture. For WANDA GROUP fans, this is essential!

Review: REPRESS ALERT: The Amsterdam-based duo Wanderwelle returns to Silent Season with their second album, which is inspired by the last years of the life of Paul Gauguin that he spent on the island of Tahiti. Gathering of the Ancient Spirits tells the alternative history of his search for a land which is untouched by modern society and whose inhabitants were still dependent on the gifts of nature and connected to their ancestors. During his stay, the painter encounters forgotten rituals and the primordial beings which haunted the island since the dawn of men.

Review: Valencia's Agustin Mena has been bringing the Warmth alias through in fine style style, and has done so thanks to a singular glow of sonics and painfully loose harmonies that are ambient in texture, but that all too often stray out into more treacherous territories. In case you hadn't understood, we love it. This new LP, Home, comes through on his own Archives label and it's a lesson in balance and precision, an eight-track experiment in subtlety and elegance. Describing such abstract forms feels almost redundant seeing a show this is music to be interpreted subjectively, but what we can say is that it brings in a true breath of fresh air to a scene all too often dictated by the same patterns in sonic frequencies. Pensive and often introspective, this is the sort of gear for the deeply focussed minds out there, and will surely provide comfort - and warmth - to those seeking refuge from the monotony of 'above the line' music.

Review: Athens of the North takes a surprise turn, briefly eschewing their usual funk, soul and jazz in favour of something far more visceral and musically intriguing. It comes from Scottish writer, producer and instrumentalist Andrew Mitchell under the Andrew Wasylyk alias, and it is the result of a commission from a historic house in Scotland to create new music for their restored, 19th century Erard Grecian harp. While that instrument is an ever present, it rarely dominates; instead, Mitchell has served up a joyously laidback and atmospheric collection of compositions that variously draw on Bob James style jazz-funk, British library music, Eno-style ambient movements, homemade field recordings, drowsy jazz, brass bands, modern classical and Gaelic folk. In a word: spellbinding.

Review: Way back in 1996, Rod Modell (he of Deepchord and Echospace fame) joined forces with Chris Troy as Waveform Transmission. They released one, CD-only album, V1.0-1.9, before going their separate ways. 21 years on, they've reunited for this superb follow-up on Astral Industries. While there are naturally plenty of nods towards Modell's usual densely layered, ultra-textured sound - think manipulated field recordings and lashings of outboard analogue effects - for the most part the set is far dreamier and more melodically precise than his ambient works; a testament, perhaps, to Troy's influence. Either way, the resultant tracks are, for the most part, breathtakingly good, sitting somewhere between gently drifting aural meditations and Pete Namlook style deep space soundscapes.

It's an album that sees classic strands of '80s synths blend and pair themselves with guitars that shimmer and sing to the point both instruments become one. It's a furturistic style of new age ambient exoctica that Weingarten purports, but not so much in the way of Pacific Island specialist Mike Cooper, but more the Brian Eno meets Jean Michel Jarre style. For a deep dip back into the sound of minimal synth, tape loops and processed guitars, allow Carl Weingarten to introduce himself to your collection like he should have done 33 years ago.

Review: Mike Weis surfaced in 2009 on Digitalis and since then the release rate of his records have been few and far between, but the quality has always remained top tier. Debuting on Type - an important label for Andreas Tilliander's Mokira project - he delivers a three-track 12" opened by the wooden industrial knock, pop and click of "The Temple Bell Stops" (with some delightful electric static too". "But The Sound Keeps Coming" continues the record's theme of field-recordings mixed with busy and low-lying tribal drums and shimmering ride symbols that sound as thousands of soft feathers are being poured all over them, while the real ambient and drone piece comes in "Out Of The Flowers" where the first sign of a kick drum ever so shyly reveals itself.
