Review: Amble is the new recording alias of an artist known only as Ess M, a Swedish producer who recorded this debut album at home "with a few select instruments". According to the brief sleeve notes, each of the tracks was recorded at night following days spent at work, resulting in less sleep but a set that ripples with otherworldly quality. Much of the material is reminiscent of the IDM sounds of the early to mid 1990s, where ambient style chords, melodies and gently throbbing acid lines rise above hushed or laidback beats. It makes for superb listening, with the producer's keenness on short, tight tracks resulting in a quickly changing journey through ear-pleasing, emotive electronica.

Review: "At the center of 'Long Formations +4' are the two longest pieces I've recorded. Although recorded and released at different times, these pieces always felt like they were two sides of the same coin and I'd hoped to have them collected on a physical release one day. Both use layers of guitar as the source material and the pieces ebb and flow between the original guitar recordings and variations on them - manipulations in playback speed and EQ with additional textures and melodies fading into the mixes. The additional pieces were all recorded in late 2019 and are significantly shorter pieces, but feel very connected to the long formations in tone and in mood so it seemed fitting that these all be compiled together. These pieces are also predominantly guitar based with the addition of strings in "Soft Spoken" and onde magnetique in 'Street Lights'."

Review: Hidden Amongst the Trees and Foothills' was recorded this past spring during what I would describe as a very weird time for me. I was experiencing a constant sense of isolation and feeling disconnected with both myself and others. Playing guitar has been a constant source of peace for me and these are some tracks that came out of this difficult period. Looking back now, I feel like I'm in a different, better place now. I hope this music will bring peace to others just as it has done for me.

Review: If there's one thing that can be said of Blackest Ever Black, it's that the label continues to confounds expectations. Having just issued Dead Unique, a "lost classic of English art-rock" by Mick Hobbs under his Officer! guise, Blackest Ever Black now turn their attentions to Sweden and Bremen, a duo comprised of Scandinavian underground punk figures Lanchy Orre and Jonas Tiljander. Their BEB debut takes the form of Second Launch, an eleven track collection that further explores the instrumental blend of krautrock, drone, and progressive rock that made up Bremen's 2013 self-titled debut. Guitar and organ are the primary weapons wielded by Orre and Tiljander on Second Launch, subjected to all manner of reverb and feedback, with drums and synthesiser tones offering some rhythmic balance.

Review: While Greek producer Hior Chronik tends to be at his best when pushing boundaries, he never forgets the fundamental role played by melody. It can be heard in his slowly shifting ambient pieces and becomes even more prevalent when he veers towards neo-classical territory. "Blind Heaven" sits in the latter category. While atmospheric and otherworldly - thanks in part to his judicious use of drone style textures and spaced-out experimental sounds - the album's main calling card is the quality of the orchestration and the slow creep of his increasingly intense arrangements. It's genuinely emotive stuff, with the overriding themes being melancholy, anger and regret.

Review: Trust Blackest Ever Black for psychedelic lo-fi goth-tronica: this time courtesy of Berlin dwelling Italian Silvia Kastel. She has released on labels such as Ultramarine, Alt.Vinyl and Clan Destine over the years - both solo and as part of the duo Ninni Morgia Control Unit. 'Air Flows' was recorded between her expansive studio in Italy and a more compact, ersatz set-up in Berlin. The album gradually takes on some of the character of the German capital: you can hear the wide streets and uninhabited spaces, the seepage of never-ending nightlife and the loneliness. Musically it is informed by musique concrete, Japanese minimalism and techno-pop: and is both her fullest and most refined offering to date. A work of vivid, isolationist electronics which draws deeply on her past experience but assuredly breaks new ground.

Cat: MATSS 2. Rel: 28 May 19
  1. The Perishable Imagination (14:19)

Review: Earlier in the year, Jonny Nash and Diego Herrera (AKA Suzanne Kraft) debuted their MATStudio project, a collage style affair featuring lengthy tracks built out of fragments of "improvisations, experiments and accidents". This speedy follow-up is arguably even better than its predecessor, at least in our eyes. There's something particularly wondrous about A-side "The Perishable Imagination", a sublime 14-minute journey through processed ambient electronics, delay-laden acoustic guitars and droning effects that subtly shifts focus several times. "Maybe This Is Something You Should Think About" slowly throbs and pulses before softly unfurling via trademark Jonny Nash guitars, scattergun Autechre-esque beats and intergalactic electronics. Lie down, zone out and enjoy.

Review: Henrik Schwarz may have once produced some the deepest and most atmospheric house records around, but in recent years his dancefloor output has been minimal. Instead, he's re-cast himself as composer and producer working at the cutting edge of neo-classical/electronic music fusion. He's at it again here in cahoots with Dutch string section Alma Quartet. Their inventive and otherworldly arrangements are brilliantly blended with Schwarz's subtle electronics and experimental production techniques to create evocative and imaginative pieces that are often hard to pin down. Sometimes, they're cyclical and heady, as if all involved are channeling Philip Glass or Steve Reich; at other points, they sound like classical versions of unheard minimal techno tracks. Throughout, you'll be surprised, inspired and entertained in equal measure.

  3. The West Berlin Open Air Concert (Livemiles part 2 - part 1) (16:59)
  4. The West Berlin Open Air Concert (part 2) (10:17)
Review: Dating from Tangerine Dream's infamous "blue period", 1988's "Livemiles" originally squeezed recordings from two iconic concerts - one in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1986, the other in West Berlin in 1987 - onto one slab of wax. Given that both recordings hover around the 30-minute mark, this resulted in pretty rubbish sound. This reissue addresses this issue, splitting each recording into two parts for a louder cut. Musically, it's what you'd expect from Tangerine Dream in this period, ebbing and flowing between Fairlight and Atari ST-driven electronic rhythms and blissful ambient soundscapes. It's all very positive in the manner of, say, Jean Michel-Jarre, rather than the more droning and atmospheric, krautrock-influenced feel of their 1970s work.

Review: While the Space of Variants label is perhaps more readily associated with hazy dub techno, it also has a neat sideline in similarly spaced-out ambient cuts. "Ambient Addict" celebrates this side of the label's musical personality via 11 tracks from a variety of obscure, established and up-and-coming artists. There's much to admire throughout, from the near neo-classical electronic movements of DT-90's "Ionosphere" and the enveloping ambient techno shuffle of "Intrusing Dew" [sic] by Desove, to the slow-burn ambient dub smokiness of Otzim's Lee's "Divers" and the swirling, reverb-heavy drone textures of Flying Cobra's dense and otherworldly "Aether".
