Review: Of Wave Variations, British producer Dennis Huddleston aka 36 has said that ocean tides inspired his latest album for Indianapolis-based Past Inside The Present. Recalling the sense of longing and wonder when standing on a beach, while staring past the waves and into the endless horizon, he feels the album is one of the most minimal records he has ever made, as he had far less sound sources at his disposal. Huddleston intentionally created the tracks around the three minute mark, as he feels that a lot of ambient creations are unnecessarily long (we agree!) and as the label most succinctly put it 'take you straight to Elysium and then dissolve into the ether.' The moods throughout the album are quite varied, moving from sanguine, melodic affairs, into intoxicating shoegaze-ish soundscapes, haunting and introspective drones and film score-like cues.

Review: Arovane evolved quickly during the early stages of his career. The German producer became known for a gossamer-light strain of ambient electronica which he has continued to explore up to the present day, but his first albums such as Atol Scrap (on cult label DIN) and Tides (on City Centre Offices) featured elegantly sculpted beats alongside pastoral melodic flourishes. Following Atol Scrap's reissue recently, Keplar turn their attention to Tides for a remastered revisit, and it's lost none of its charm in 22 years. There are moments of fragile beauty which point to the direction Arovane was heading in, but there are still some brilliantly programmed drums which rightly established him as a dazzling talent during a boom era for downtempo electronica.

Review: Los Angeles based ambient husband and wife duo, awakened souls join with Reunion Island native, From Overseas to create Keep The Orange Sun. After hearing each other's individual music, a deeper conversation started about shared musical influences and inspiration leading to the creation of this album. Keep The Orange Sun guides the listener on a thoughtfully curated path. Starting with the certainty of life's changes (Certainty of Tides) to arising self-doubt (Release/Adapt) and celebrating immersion in the present moment as the gateway to deeper connection with nature and one's life (Keep The Orange Sun). The instrumentation present in each track channels elements of electronic, shoegaze & ambient with each artist's distinct musical fingerprint highlighted.

  7. Carlo Maria - "Fantas Resynthesized For 808 & 202" (7:32)
  8. Kara-Lis Coverdale - "Fantas Morbida" (7:53)
Review: Caterina Barbieri is an Italian modular goddess. Her 2019 album Ecstatic Computation was opened up by the majestic 'Fantas' and now it gets a whole new lease of life with this bumper package of variations. Each artist was personally chosen by Caterina and told to do whatever they wanted with the source material. The results are beguiling from the off with Evelyn Saylor, Lyra Pramuk, Annie Garlid & Stine Janvin going for a loopy, multi-layered vocal version that is constantly ascending to heaven. There is more calm from Kali Malon who keeps it strictly ambient and Carlo Maria approximates peak time melodic techno but from a much more artistic rather than narcotic point of view.

Review: William Basinski and Janek Schaefer make for a long distance collaboration on this much anticipated new album. It has taken the best part of eight years from conception to final execution but that more than proves worth the wait. Time and duration are recurring themes in their work and during the pandemic yeas in particular those were very much skewed and warped for us all. ". . . on reflection" casts itself free from temporal restraints with delicate piano passages, flickering melodies and drawn out drones that really sink you in deep.

Review: When it comes to floor-filling tracks that balance smart drum programming with pure melodic bliss, you can always rely on John Beltran to deliver. The five track EP contains masterful ambient pieces with a Detroit/Chicago analog house vibe bringing a warm and psychedelic feel. He joins the label's third release with a brilliant chill-out EP entitled 'The Peninsula', united by another Detroit legend Luke Hess, bringing his traditional 303 upbeat sound remixing 'Begin Again'. Visual artist Alona Rodeh also joins the release showcasing her stunning High-Vis (Future, Black) which featured in her first solo exhibition at the Christine Konig Galerie in Vienna last year.

Review: Re: Discovery do us all a favour here by putting out his majestic and dreamy techno album from Deep Space Network. Deep Space Network was a collaborative project by David Moufang aka Move D and Jonas Grossman which explored electronic sounds though a lens of ambient, chill out, sci-f and IDM. It first came on Source Records - Move D's own label - and 27 years later gets vinyl release that it deserves, all with original artwork and a gatefold cover. It's a lush, widescreen affair and album in the truest sense of the word. Would you expect anything less from a master of all styles than David Moufang?

Review: Danish Damien Dubrovnik duo have been releasing psyched-out noise and power electronics since 2009, and the majority of their work has been released through their own sublime Posh Isolation stable. This time, however, they jump start their machines and distortion pedals, and land on the Jealous God imprint; the label is run by a rather startling trio, the combined talents of Karl O'Connor aka Regis, Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant, and James Ruskin. It sounds like Damien Dubrovnik have all the respect they need, then! All four sound sculptures seem tailor made for the label, where glacial drones hint at something otherworldly or religious, and faint pulses can be heard in the background of the mix. It's techno without techno, dance music without the dance, and we love it to bits. Quality.

Review: Brian and Roger Eno have their own accomplished legacies in music - Brian as a polymath producer and artist, and Roger as a composer. Now the brothers have pooled their talents into their first collaborative album, Mixing Colours, which has taken shape over a 15 year period. The overall process involved Roger recording piano parts in MIDI to send to his older brother for processing, resulting in a mass of work which they finally whittled down to this exquisite collection. Lovers of both artists will be immensely satisfied, as the fusion of classical piano composition and adventurous ambient electronics merge for an engaging, hypnagogic listening experience.

Review: Back in 2011, Liz Harris - better known under her artistic alias Grouper - released a pair of albums under the "AIA" banner. The first, "Dream Loss", has already been reissued; here, they offer up the second, "Alien Observer". It partly explores similar sonic territory, where distant-sounding recordings of Harris' voice, synths and evocative guitars are smothered in reverb, field recordings and noise, but also includes a few sharper, more defined moments. Amongst these, we'd suggest checking the sublime title track, a beautifully becalmed and spaced-out fusion of Harris' vocals and delay-laden guitar arpeggio scales, and closer "Come Softly", an even more beautiful and minimalist piece that's nothing less than stunning.

Review: Melodies In The Sand is another vital album from Melody As Truth. It collects together the works of Czech artists Irena and Vojt?ch Havlovi, a husband and wife pair who made music int he 80s as part of experimental collective Capella Antiqua e Moderna. Their style spanned various styles of European classical music and was never less than unorthodox yet beguiling. This record really shines a light on these talented artists and brims with an emotional honesty and vulnerability that will impact anyone who hears it. The delicate keys, the vocal whispers and way they drift in and out, the rippling chords -these are always empty, subtle tracks but they leave an inedible mark.

Review: Martin Jenkins aka Pye Corner Audio's loose trilogy of albums comes to a superb close here with Entangled Routes. It follows on from 2016's Stasis and 2019's Hollow Earth, all three of which have had a gently epic sci-fi concept that has very much taken listeners on a trip through the cosmos. This latest is said to play with "the idea of mycorrhizal networks and human attempts to listen in and communicate." It is a well-crafted and compelling world of sound with stripped back and sleek synth sequences, rolling hypnotic rhythms and plenty of deft sonic details that help craft an expansive world of sound.

Review: Over the last couple of years, former Chi Factory member Hanyo van Oosterom has donned the Son of Chi alias and begun collaborating with a new generation of ambient producers. The latest is Spanish artist Clara Brae, who handed over a swathe of field recordings made for the site-specific Wetland sound instillation before returning to add new layers to the Dutch veteran's lengthy ambient soundscapes. As usual with van Oosterom's creations, what's on offer is an intoxicating, sonically detailed sound soup in which his own sparse instrumentation (percussion, bass, oud, mouth harp, piano, guitar and more) bobs and weaves in a sea of atmospheric field recordings and heady new age intent. If you've enjoyed any of his previous work, you'll love it - we genuinely think it's another future classic.

Her two self-released cassette albums "Water Memory and Mount Vision" may well have passed you by when they first snuck out in 2017 and 2018 respectively, but fortunately the ever-tuned-in RVNG Intl. are taking care of business and gathering these two wonderful releases together and presenting them as a beautifully packaged long playing release. This is the kind of delicate ambient material that suits both mindful immersion and environmental mood setting, emanating harmony and balance at every turn.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.
