Review: Music From Memory totally recall and compile this next instalment in their popular multi-artist compilation series, Virtual Dreams. This time centring on Ambient Explorations In The House And Techno Age, Japan 1993-1999, this second edition in the series follows on from the first released in 2020, and continues to shine a light on the house and techno-adjacent music that helped redefine the definition of ambient music during the 1990s. While the first focused on Europe, we venture far further East here, primarily riffing on the many ambient flows and sequential somnaumblisms eminent from the J-shaped isle from the time, including the trans-missive floater, 'Phoenix At Desert' by Akio and the pulse-tidal electro phaseout, Web's 'The Cycle Of Seasons'.

Review: JS is an alias of James Zeiter and is also the name of his own label. This seventh transmission once again showcases his signature take on minimal, dub and techno. 'JS-07' rolls out with deep, pillow drums and well buried sub bass that slowly sweeps you up and locks you into a state of hypnosis. 'JS-07R' on the flip side is run through with slightly more warmth and light, like beams of sun piercing the surface of an ocean and catching microscopic organisms floating on the sea bed. It's a heady sound full of soul.

Review: Music From Memory share the CD edition (there's also a vinyl release) of their latest in a series of compilations, which focuses on the tide of new ambient and minimalist electronica which came about at the turn of the millennium, Virtual Dreams. Whilst the first volume focused on the techno and electronica musics emergent in Europe in 1993-99, Virtual Dreams Vol. 2 homes in on Japan during the same period, tracking the regional, geosonic differences between each global cultural centre. Tracing a fibrous thread, that began to weave itself of its own accord, out from the early 90s acid house FOMO experienced in Japan's early days, through to its restful response with the dawn of "listening techno" proffered by the likes of Sublime Records, Syzygy Records and Frogman Records, many of the tracks featured therein cull their choices from not only these leading lights but also the odd and not-so-odd rarity, helping usher in a truer representation of the era.

Music For Bus Stations
Cat: SME 2477.
Review: Rod Modell's Music For Bus Stations, released by Silentes in Italy, is a masterful exploration of ambient and dub techno that immerses listeners in a transcendent soundscape. Known for his Detroit roots and innovative use of old-school recording techniques like tape loops and echo devices, Modell crafts a sonic experience that seamlessly integrates with modern architecture. The album serves as a generative backdrop, enhancing the atmosphere of bus stations with its ethereal and progressive sounds. Designed to complement rather than clash with architectural elements, the composition creates a constantly evolving, organic sound tapestry. By utilising polyrhythmic elements and shifting sonic phenomena, Modell's work induces a state of calm and reflection. Inspired by avant-garde bus station designs, such as those by Domitianus Arquitectura and Bluck & Morgen, Music For Bus Stations transforms everyday spaces into immersive sound environments. The result is a living, unpredictable auditory experience that elevates the mundane to the sublime, perfectly capturing the essence of ambient exploration. Act fast if you want a copy, Rod Modell fans are die-hards!

Review: Science, Art And Ritual chronicles the musical journey of Kingsuk Biswas, known as Bedouin Ascent. Growing up in Harrow during the 70s and 80s, Biswas was influenced by David Rodigan's dub shows and the post-punk experimentation of the era. His eclectic tastes spanned punk, free jazz, noise, and Indian Classical music, which he fused with his ever expanding record collection. By 1987, his music prefigured what would become techno and gave rise to this album which was released in 1994 by Rising High Records. Science, Art And Ritual now celebrates its 30th anniversary with a deluxe 3LP reissue featuring restored tracks and some bonus new material.

Review: Wewantsounds has put together a re-release of the late, great Ryuichi Sakamoto's classic album Coda, which was originally issued in his native Japan in 1983. This album is a solo piano rendition of the seminal Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence soundtrack and has never been available outside Japan until now. It finds legendary composer Sakamoto perform acoustic piano interpretations of his iconic themes including the classic title track and 'Germination,' which later featured in the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack. Remastered by Seigen Ono's Saidera Mastering studio in Tokyo, this reissue includes the original artwork and a four page insert with new liner notes by Andy Beta.

The Detroit-born artist scours the full breadth and depth of his sound here, with its many sheer fuzzes and tasty melodies providing ample ,de-coustic contrast to the impersonal but oddly calming modernist architecture styles that constitute the many central European bus station designs that Modell has visited on his travels.

Review: Music For Bus Stations by Rod Modell draws an explicit parallel between the act of vesseled, bodily transportation and psychogenic listening, implicitly arguing that both are forms of affirming the importance of elsewhere. Realising that making one's own noise is sometimes an unnecessary reaction, his liner notes read: "There is no reason for resistance. Let's be silent. The noise around us is quite good." Waiting and deep listening thus become central themes of this LP, inspired by the modernist designs of bus stations dotting the many outer metropolitan areas of such staple European cities as Pzorzheim, Rio Maior and Hamburg. With its shifting statics and coarse electric ambiences providing equal parts tension and release, Modell emphasises attention paid, not reflexive avoidance of or reaction to, the transient environment one finds oneself in.

Radials (part 1) (18:55)
Radials (part 2) (22:35)
Review: For AI-38, Italian duo LF58 (Giuseppe Tillieci and Filippo Scorcucchi) present 'Radials', a live recording captured in Venice. The EP centres around a site-specific performance that translates the visual themes of the homonymous exhibition by Roman artist group Sbagliato for the 2023 Biennale Architettura. Sbagliato's installation, set within the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, explores the manipulation of architectural spaces, creating optical illusions that challenge perceptions of reality. The venue's loggia, with its five archways overlooking the Canal Grande, is a key focus, giving rise to a repeated, disorienting visual effect. LF58's sound design mirrors these concepts, using quadraphonic audio to create an immersive, spatial soundscape. Opening with the ambient noise of running water and city sounds, 'Radials' quickly shifts into more abstract territory, with shimmering frequencies and layered textures evoking the exhibition's interplay of space and perspective. The sound moves fluidly, capturing the sensation of shifting dimensions and altered realities.

Review: Rod Modell's Music For Bus Stations is, as it says on the tin, a "generative sonic backdrop for bus stations". We hope that that includes Milton Keynes Interchange, or else us Brits will have no music to help us through the bleakness next time we're headed up North! Building on a 25-ish-year-long career's worth of similar stuff, the Detroit sound-e-scape artist serves up a profound, yet measured set of pieces here, all of which are untitled, and each of which deliver slightly different takes on a fibre-optic, refractive sound, echoing something between Global Communication, Arpanet and Celer in combining implied themes of travel and telecoms.

Review: zake's untouchable ambient imprint Past Inside the Present revisits James Bernard's classic 1994 album Atmospherics and has remastered it and paired it with some fresh reinterpretations by bvdub, a longtime friend and collaborator. Since the original release, music and technology have evolved significantly but the timeless craft and rich textures of Bernard's work remain evident. Atmospherics achieved cult status during the ambient music boom after being crafted solely with a keyboard, sequencer, 12-bit sampler, drum machine, and bass guitar, all created in real-time and without edits. Bvdub's reinterpretations honour the originals while adding new dimensions and infusing them with a melancholic air that enhances its emotional depth.

Review: After six years away, Rebelski returns to All Day I Dream with 'The Sirens', an EP that marks a compelling re-entry into the ambient fold. This collection of six tracks showcases the producer's ability to craft expansive soundscapes, each layered with intricate melodies, lush instrumentals, and hauntingly soft vocals. From the opener 'Cascading Waves' to the titular 'The Sirens', each track conjures an immersive atmosphere that feels simultaneously vast and intimate. 'Memory Loss' and 'Jupiter' continue this journey, pushing the listener into deeper introspection with their hypnotic rhythms and subtle shifts in tone. Side two offers even more to explore. 'Under Your Spell (feat Caroline Sheehan)' brings a delicate yet powerful vocal performance into the mix, perfectly complementing Rebelski's ethereal production. 'Polarity' follows, balancing soft textures with darker undercurrents. The EP closes with a Tim Green remix of 'The Sirens', which adds a touch of dancefloor energy while retaining the meditative quality of the original. Much like the otherworldly vibe that Rebelski has become known for, 'The Sirens' EP transports the listener to a realm where time and space blur, offering a serene yet complex auditory experience.

Review: Marysia Osu's debut album, harp, beats & dreams, is a stunning example of her musical evolution and innovative spirit. Known for her role in Levitation Orchestra and as a Brownswood 'Bubblers' graduate, Marysia blends her classical roots with contemporary exploration in this enchanting release. Originating from Poland and enriched by her musical education in London, she has embraced the harp with profound artistry, now intertwining it with electronic elements and personal introspection. The album opens with the hypnotic 'seatime,' a journey through coastal reverie that celebrates self-acceptance and inner harmony. It continues with 'care to care,' where Levitation Orchestra's Plumm adds ethereal vocals, advocating for self-care and personal space. The track 'memento mori' features YUIS's illuminating flute, echoing stoic reflections on life's impermanence. Marysia's return to the piano and spontaneous clarinet experiments, inspired by a vivid dream, add depth to her soundscape. The clarinet's breath symbolises life's essence, bridging body and mind, enhancing the album's introspective quality. Marysia Osu's debut is a an exciting debut, offering a serene escape thanks to her talent and unique vision.

Review: September 23rd is the debut release of William Basinski's new Arcadia Archive series and it features a previously unreleased gem recorded in September 1982 in his first loft in Brooklyn's pre-gentrified DUMBO. This early work, derived from a high school piano composition, evolved significantly after Basinski recorded it using a portable cassette deck on a piano owned by his neighbour, John Epperson at 351 Jay Street. Initially unimpressive, the piece transformed through Basinski's use of the John Giorno/William Burroughs cut-up technique and Frippertronics loop system to yield remarkable results. This discovery adds a captivating layer to Basinski's nearly five-decade career.

Review: Jonas Munk's Mirror Phase is the final chapter in his trilogy of minimalist ambient albums, marking a return to the warm, immersive tones he's often associated with. Across eight tracks, Munk crafts soundscapes rooted in evolving guitar and synth loops, where subtle changes mirror the slow transformation of clouds. The title track is a standoutia nearly 18-minute drone piece where oscillating tones phase in and out, creating mesmerizing, shifting patterns. 'Transition' layers delicate guitars, evoking the calm rhythm of waves on a shoreline, while 'At a Distance' employs slightly detuned analog synths to conjure a haunting, hypnotic atmosphere reminiscent of Popol Vuh's krautrock. 'Rise' and the closing 'Return to Nowhere' hearken back to Munk's Manual releases, with their shimmering textures. With Mirror Phase, Munk reaches a high point in his ambient work, expertly balancing subtlety and depth. The CD release also includes Altered Light (2021), a previously digital-only album, further showcasing Munk's mastery of ambient soundscapes built over his 25-year career.

Review: September 23rd is the first release in William Basinski's new Arcadia Archive series. Recorded in September 1982 in his first loft in the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, September 23rd is a recently unearthed early entry in what has become a hugely inspirational and influential catalogue. Built from a piano piece that Basinski composed in high school in the mid-1970s, September 23rd quickly evolved into a vastly different work, upon its revisitation. Using the John Giorno and William Burroughs cut-up technique, Basinski fabricated an elaborate Frippertronics and feedback loop tape delay system, resulting in the quiet but dramatic set of sounds and resounds you hear here.

Review: OKRAA's La Gran Corriente represents a significant creative turning point for Colombian-born Juan Carlos Torres Alonso. Released via A Strangely Isolated Place, the album follows a transformative experience Juan had in Bogota in May 2023. It was there that he encountered what he describes as "an infinite current behind or inside of everything," a revelation that completely changed his approach to music. Scrapping earlier demos, Juan embraced a more fluid and organic style, abandoning fixed grids and BPMs, and tapping into the spontaneous energy that characterised his other production alias, Laudrup. The result is a hypnotic journey through time and space, as the album's non-linear structures give way to unexpected yet cohesive sonic moments. 'La Gran Corriente' features "happy accidents" throughout, subtle production quirks that contribute to its distinct sound. Central to the project is a poem written by Juan, weaving reflections on time and reality into the fabric of the music. Lines like "the land of oblivion is not real" and "time is an illusion" form the backbone of the album's philosophical undercurrent. The album's release is paired with artwork by Peter Skwiot Smith, with the 2xLP available on limited edition coloured vinyl, fully mastered by Taylor Deupree.

Review: Oliver Coates' Throb, Shiver, Arrow of Time is an exploration of memory and emotion, blending the tactile with the ephemeral. This third album from the British cellist, producer, and composer, released through RVNG Intl., encapsulates six years of introspection and creative evolution. Following the atmospheric textures of his previous work, skins n slime, Coates delves deeper into the interplay of digital and analogue sound. The album's centerpiece, 'Shopping centre curfew,' reflects a surreal fusion of events from South London during the pandemic, manifesting a unique blend of temporal dissonance and vivid soundscapes. Tracks like 'Please be normal' and '90' showcase Coates' ability to weave misty tones and shifting frequencies into a cohesive auditory experience. Collaborations with Malibu and chrysanthemum bear, along with Faten Kanaan's synth textures, enhance the album's depth. Inspired by artist Sarah Sze's installations, Coates applies a sculptural approach to sound, creating a dynamic interplay between digital manipulation and live performance. The result is a rich experience that resists closure, with the final track 'Make it happen' embodying a defiant push against silence.

Review: Blume Records return to the forefront of the contemporary experimental canon with the first ever vinyl edition of (a study of) James Tenney's infamous Fluxus suite, Postal Pieces. The storied composer and music theorist was an alpine fixture of the modern music compositional world, with his various writings - both notated on the stave and prosaically penned in the journal - amounting to exquisitely impenetrable tracts on every isolable facet of music theory from harmonic perception to process music to sound synthesis to spectral music. Originally a set of 11 pieces but truncated to five here, drawing on a set of live recordings laid down in 2003, Postal Pieces is one of many of Tenney's works emphasising process over end result. Perhaps the emphasis on process was an attempt to treat the sufferances of "schizophonia", which had plagued musicologists since the 1930s as one of many fussed-over consequences of recorded music obscuring the original source of the sounds heard through an extended medium. The album's sonic pentagram - of long sequences resembling air-raid sirens, its basal textural swells and backroomed feedback loops - might sound doomy to the glib ear. Ultimately, though, this album could also be read as a simple formal exercise, one intended to divert Tenney's own aversion to writing letters (despite his wont to write music theory). Ironically enough, we're sure that, in the wake of this reissue and its hot demand, the postal system itself will thank Tenney for the boost in revenue.

Review: Marking its first decade of activity, Blume returns with the first ever vinyl reissue of the seminal New Music for Electronic and Recorded Media, from 1977, the third and final instalment in a suite of releases that includes James Tenney's Postal Pieces and Ben Vida's Vocal Trio. Distinctly a standout compilation in the feminist avant-garde hall of fame, New Music For Electronic & Recorded Media compiles individual pieces from the likes of Johanna M. Beyer, Annea Lockwood, Pauline Oliveros, Laurie Spiegel, Megan Roberts, Ruth Anderson, and Laurie Anderson. Centring on the Ptolemaic turn towards female inclusivity, amidst the Copernican metastases of aleatory and generative music in the 1970s, the various sonic effluvia here range from buzzing pulse wave gallops through abstracted Northeastern American fields (Spiegel's 'Appalachian Grove I') through to primal minimalist abreactions (Megan Roberts' 'I Could Sit Here All Day') and pitch-whacked, satirical, musical-saw-backed anti-performances (Anderson's 'New York Social Life').

Review: Jacob Long's fourth full-length LP for Kranky hears the artist otherwise known as Earthen Sea expand his repertoire to an almost full reimagining, taking to the now longstanding Earthen Sea moniker from the fresh incarnation as a "piano trio", rather than a solo production effort. Though we gather this might not genuinely be the case, all it took was a simple shift in self-imagining to fashion a completely different take on a still so far meditative sound. Here elements were chopped and resampled, then layered with bass, drums, percussion and additional keys; the result is a fusion of live band acoustics and downtempo loops, sculpted into nine smoke-and-mirror dubs of fractured jazz, soft-focus noir and trip hop dust.

Review: Debuting on Soda Gong, Memotone aka. Will Yates brings new album Fever Of The World to our ears. Sporting a high temperature and a brain foggy pall, the world today is indeed insalubriously feverish, and Memotone crafts an arresting record in tribute to the Earth, serving as both an elegy and an elixir for it depending on how you hear it. Built on and around a set of compositional and live techniques fashioned over years, Yates' newest output is amorphous and palliative, putting our symptomatic souls at rest, with softly truck caresses by gong and pan; twinkles on the piano; real, boughed, and fed back mic-ups. The whole thing plays out like a half-hypnoic reverie, in which dream-images coalesce with engrams of the past and made manifest in the auditory field; be these the deja entendus of the abstracted children's laughter on 'Fever Of The World' or the sense of mobile, civic, automatic movement, via a continual textural wash, on 'The Bus'.

Review: Bersarin Quartett is the work of Thomas Bucker, who since 2012 has released his flagship ambient project via Denovali. The Munster-based artist employs a grandiose orchestral lilt to the compositions on Systeme, threading considered sound design touches in amongst the sweep and swell of strings that rise from his imaginary quartet of players. It's neo-classical with a plaintive, soundtrack-ready quality, but as ever Bucker weaves tension, dissonance and texture in amongst the foreground melodic content to make for a richly compelling listen.

Mirror Phase
Cat: VISTA 015LP. Rel: 25 Oct 24
Review: Mirror Phase marks the conclusion of Jonas Munk's ambient trilogy, a series that has seen him explore the subtleties of soundscapes crafted from guitar and synthesiser loops. These eight tracks bring Munk back to the warmer tones often associated with his earlier work, shaping sonic structures that ebb and flow, much like clouds shifting in the sky. The title track, 'Mirror Phase', stands out as his most expansive drone composition to date. Over its nearly 18-minute runtime, oscillating tones move in and out of sync, creating a constantly evolving and mesmerising pattern. 'Transition' offers something gentler, layering guitars to evoke the sensation of waves lapping against the shore. Meanwhile, 'At a Distance' leans into the eerie and hypnotic, with slightly out-of-tune analogue synthesisers giving the track a krautrock flavour reminiscent of Popol Vuh. The shimmering tones of 'Rise' and the closer, 'Return to Nowhere', recall Munk's past work as Manual, blending glistening textures with a serene undercurrent. It's an album that's less about instant gratification and more about gradual immersion. The pieces evolve slowly, rewarding patient listeners with subtle shifts in mood and atmosphere. By the end of this trilogy, Munk seems to have fully embraced the minimalism and expansive soundscapes that have defined his ambient explorations, culminating in what might be his most refined and cohesive ambient work yet.

Review: The makings of Murcof's new album Twin Colour were first germinated in 2020, shaped by the early days of the pandemic lockdowns. The first volume in a new multidisciplinary project between Fernando Corona (Murcof), his daughter Alina Corona, and his colleague Simon Geilfus, Twin Colour is born of less conception and more studio heuristics, though it draws many of its inspirations from some of the 80s material that Murcof had laid down at the start of his career. As such, an impressive combo of tape-hissed coldwave and modern, progressive ambient is heard here, straying from Murcof's trickier material for something much more roughshod, tawny and dramatic.

Review: Parisian label InFine presents Collection, a stunning anthology of Kaito's ambient works, the project of Hiroshi Watanabe, a techno veteran with nearly three decades of experience. This album compiles remastered and re-edited tracks originally released between 2020 and 2022 on Watanabe's Cosmic Signatures imprint, offering a serene sonic journey for introspection and reflection. Collection shows off Kaito's ethereal soundscapes, blending layered drones, emotive synthetic strings, and analogue harmonies that ascend to euphoric heights. Pieces like 'Summer Mood' evoke a nostalgic beauty, blending piano-led melodies with a bittersweet sense of reminiscence. The track 'Birds of Passage' features delicate, treated textures, while 'Summer Sketch' nods to the warmth of Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain with its humanistic horns. The album's beat-driven tracks stand out, with 'Silent Cloud' echoing the vibes of Mo Wax and Massive Attack, and 'Silent Sky' delivering deep basslines and subtle details reminiscent of classic downtempo electronica. Masterfully remastered by Rashad Becker, Collection is a testament to Kaito's mastery of ambient music, blending minimalism with emotional depth. Hats off to InFine, for further solidifying his place among Japan's ambient music luminaries.

Originally released in 2012, this modern classical and ambient album has got tremendous word of mouth support for its uniqueness and originality, its flavour somewhere between spacey and post-classical. The album certainly has a minimalistic approach to it and at times there are chamber-like tones that overlap with drone, making for an intelligent and very engaging album. Movement (2xLP)
Cat: HG 2405. Rel: 18 Oct 24
Review: Samuel Reinhard's latest release, Movement, feels like a deep dive into the possibilities of space, texture, and repetition. Known for his intricate chamber compositions, Reinhard steps into electroacoustic territory, crafting a piece that's as much about what isn't there as what is. The title track 'No. 1', at a staggering 20 minutes, unfolds at a near-glacial pace. Piano notes decay as they meet fragments of cello, bass flute, double bass, baritone sax, and harp - all contributing to a sonic landscape where time feels stretched. The minimalist arrangement isn't about creating immersive soundscapes but rather letting each note breathe, decay, and be accompanied by the physical actions that produced them. It's a stark reminder that silence, or near-silence, can be just as powerful as sound. In keeping with his usual method, Reinhard uses a predetermined system to arrange these instrumental recordings. It's not the grand layering of instruments into a single cohesive whole, but rather the augmentation of subtle textures, crafting a free-floating counterpoint. There's no rush to move from one point to the next, leaving listeners to focus on the resonance of each note, the breath that fills an instrument, or the bow held in mid-air. As with previous releases on Hallow Ground and Prasens Editionen, including names like Lawrence English and Kali Malone, Movement is an exploration of perception, duration, and attention. Reinhard has produced a suite that manages to evoke both stillness and motion - a paradox that's central to his compositional style.

Review: Space Drum Meditation is back with a reissue of Four Tusks, a 12-track odyssey of dreaded sonics and trepidatious treks through augmented wildernesses. Their debut album and seventh reissue on the eponymous label, the duo of Eddie Ness and Liem were once fixtures of the house musical landscape at large, yet only with SDM did they turn their hands to demurer experimental soundscapes, informed by the "tribal" gloom and etherics of an electro-auxed rainforest. Throughout Four Tusks, we hear the sleeker, pantherine side of their catalogue, with ritualistic drumming heard well-melded into many a grim, cowled and rattling texture, all glued by the faint but here still oppressive sound of rain, not to mention vapour steaming off the megaphylls.

Review: Black Truffle is celebrating the tenth anniversary of Oren Ambarchi's Quixotism with a special reissue, originally released on Editions Mego in 2014. This remastered edition, with enhancements by Joe Talia, brings back Ambarchi's ambitious workia summation of his past explorations and a precursor to future innovations. Quixotism presents a single, LP-length composition divided into five parts, anchored by Thomas Brinkmann's pulsating electronic rhythms. The album starts with delicate orchestral and piano textures, gradually evolving into a vibrant polyrhythmic shuffle featuring tabla player U-zhaan. Ambarchi's guitar traverses a wide array of acoustic spaces, from crisp, clipped tones to deep, reverberant expanses. The piece's slow, dream-like transitions and the intricate interplay of its elements reflect both a culmination of Ambarchi's previous work and a hint of his future directions. A fresh opportunity to rediscover the charm of Quixotism.

Review: False Aralia is a new self-titled label from Brian Foote (of Peak Oil, Kranky, etc.) that launches with "a series of recordings growing in all directions" and that draws together the work of artists from North America who are centred around the studio practices of Izaak Schlossman. Zero Key is the first 12" and it opens with a blend of spread synths, dubby undercurrents and microhouse rhythms. Pained vocals drift in and out of focus. There is a hallucinogenic quality to some of the sounds and an aquatic feel to the way the subtle and supple grooves unfold. It is otherworldly music that is rooted in real-world emotion.

Relevanz
Review: Germany's Bersarin Quartett - the imaginary invention of Munster musician Thomas Bucker - drops its fifth album Systeme. Whether the sole product of one man's imagination or the figurative invocation of orchestra-as-tulpa, it doesn't matter. This is an album of full-on metamodern electro-orchestral post-generations, the likes of which generations prior would've never heard before. Described by Denovali as "if Talk Talk, Tim Hecker and Skrillex were making music together and challenging our tolerance for ambiguity", we find this comparison apt if not eliding the real thrust of the record; the likes of 'Liebe' and 'Autopoesie' evidently draw on far more influences than mere composers, building a strikingly oneiric repertoire of crystalline fluctuations and timestretched neoclassical romances.

Review: Ambient mastermind Haruka Nakamura continues to execute his scheme to produce four albums centring on a verdant theme - "Forest" (Aoimori). This time he shares the third album in the slated quadriptych. Building on the legend that the birthplace of all musical instruments was the forested area, the Aoimori series also takes after Nakamura's own formative proximity to a "Blue Forest" near his hometown. Not stooping to the low of assuming that electronica might become abstracted from the groves, canopies and coppices of the world, the artist maintains the fact that forest music is synth music; out from a chromatic four-piece set of introductory songs, 'Blue', 'True' and 'White' included, we move with Nakamura into a serene, happily directionless wooded wandering, reaching the minimalistic aerations of 'Lake' and the earthen excavations and lyses of 'Soil'. By the end of the record, we find ourselves indebted, in 'Silence', to an artist whose tonal sensitivities and peacefully restless, steadfast ambient compositions compel us to rewild the proverbial nature reserve.

Review: The film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, a worldwide sensation upon its release in 1983, showcased Sakamoto's emerging talent as a composer - alongside his acting role - and the soundtrack became instantly popular, establishing Sakamoto as a global music icon. These solo piano versions of it were recorded at Onkyo Haus in Tokyo and initially released as part of the Japanese cassette book project Avec Piano, and now, not before town, are finally getting their first full international release.
