Drum & Bass / Jungle
Android Mash (12:35)
The Eagle (6:07)
Elevation (4:48)
Review: Alphonse pens a love letter to jungle on this new EP for Klasse Wrecks. It's a flurry of drum breaks and powerful rhythms all served up through a classical lens with hefty bass underpinning each tune. This is a real journey into jungle with epic 12-minute plus opener 'Android Mash' twisting and turning through a flurry of tumbling snares, police sirens and yearning vocals. 'The Eagle' is a more soulful sound but still dense in its arrangement and tense in its rhythms. 'Elevation' closes down with plunging basslines and dark soul atmospheres.

Glint AM (4:52)
Glint AM (DJ Normal 4 Vibemixx) (5:14)
Review: Back in 2018, Alphonse served up what was widely hailed as a mini masterpiece with his lush Afro-dub-house and basement breaks EP. Now it is repressed by the (Emotional) Especial label complete with standout remixes from The Pilotwings and DJ Normal 4. First up is the original 'Smokey' which is a fresh British house tune with congas, bongos, kick, dub bass lines and chants riding twisted FX. Fellow original 'Glint AM' strips things back with throbbing 808s and Detroit inspired strings and Akai vocals. The Pilotwings retake of 'Smokey' is a floating groove that strops things away to pure goodness and DJ Normal nods to the atmospherics of Biosphere and Leiner.

Signify (7:00)
Beechwood (7:00)
Review: Alphonse is an anonymous artist who has found a happy home on the Klasse Wrecks label. This is his third outing and is another interesting concoction that touches on everything from acid to ambient, new age to techno. And that's just on the opening tune 'Fanatic' which is as busy as you can imagine yet still has room to breathe. 'Everstar' is a hyper speed cut with layers of gleaming melody and long-tailed electronics. Further technoid funk comes in the form of 'Signify' and the more heady, dreamscape breakbeats of 'Beechwood.' These are yet more expressive weapons from this anonymous artist.

Review: Alphonse has already dropped a pair of 12"s on Especial in the past, but he's on especially excellent form this time around. A veteran of the halcyon rave days of the 90s, he's got a lot to draw on to conjure his particular kind of machine jams. "Moan Up" is a truly dazzling track, all twinkling synth lines interweaving around a crisp old school groove. As well as the loved up peaks of the original, there's also a beatless mix of the track that lets the melodies shine on their own. "White Pepper" takes things moodier and lets some sultry sax wail over the top, while retaining some of that boxy drum machine energy. There's even space for some tasteful guitar wailing - excellent.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Travelling both space and time with his constructions, Alphonse Rozel makes a welcome return on [Emotional] Especial after the Same For Me EP released last year. The incisive hit of the disco beat on "Smokey" is hard to ignore, while the booming toms and African chant lines feed into a perfect slice of dancefloor dynamite from an unspecified era. Meanwhile The Pilotwings take to the track with glee, whipping out some crisp breaks to drop over the proceedings in a pleasingly early '90s manner. "Glint AM" is quite the foil to the A side, leaning on some uplifting synth chords to provide the magic around the crafty drum programming.

Better Weather (7:31)

Better Weather (Abyss version) (6:26)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Stellar vocal cut here from Alphonse Rozel, who has had previous releases for Klasse Wrecks, Emotional Especial and Black Orpheus. Described by Hypercolour as 'spacey and dusty deepness' and that's pretty on point. Vocals are provided by one Rev Be, which Rozel utilises across these three versions. The deep bleep techno of "Better Weather" in its original version calls to mind the sounds of northern UK sounds from the early '90s, the trippy dub version - or Phazed version - is vaguely reminiscent of Derrick May's studio expriements around the same time with its funked up, flanged out and reversed elements galore. On the flip is the more straight ahead and dancefloor friendly bounce of the Abyss version.

Same For Me (9:06)
Same For Me (Junior Fairplay remix) (7:59)
Review: Especial welcomes one Alphonse to the label. A true missing in action, last seen by his crew dancing atop a bus, here literally forced him to give up the tape of Same For Me. A peane to his life? Possi bly. Mixing techno beats and (proto) rave breaks, all under his own unique and heartfelt message. Discovered on the outskirts of Letchlade, down the bottom of an abandoned traveller site in a delapidated caravan with just the clothes he was in, while clutching an armful of reel-to-reels masters, a pack of 20 B&H and 1 can of Strongbow, Alphonse's story is one of party obsessive gone AWOL. Mumbling periodically, words deciphered and names dropped. Frome, Stroud and whisper it, Castlemorton, led to rehabitlation, a bath, shave and slowly enticing is musical knowledge to share. With a few scraps appearing here and there, including a micro(dot) of disco editing knowhow given, here though he finally is able to share his experiences by looking back through making music of the future. Same For Me starts with Sterns intent, all hats, kick and fx to the max, a Fantazia of expression, before toms and 808 snap and the sermon begins. But wait, where is the bass? Boom! Subs squeeze ribs while flute lifts minds skywards. "A valuable tool in life. Concentrate on something makes you happy..." To bring this in to fold, the Junior family member is given the tapes to show what he can do. The most subtle start lulls you in to a sense of is that it? There must be more. Building. Building. Break and...hands to the sunrise. "...Thank you. Same For Me. Same For Me."

Alphonse - "Survival" (part 1)
Fx Mchn - "Jackie"
Jamie Blanco - "I Think She Thinks"
Facade - "Revelations"
Review: The newly established London Housing Trust label inaugurate proceedings with a various artists 12" featuring contributions from Cynic artist Jamie Blanco alongside the previously unheralded Alphonse, Fx Mchn and Facade. It's unclear who the latter are but inside info suggests it's three well known artists operating incognito, but don't let this wilful obscurism put you off as each track here is optimum analogue house at its finest. The Fx Mchn contribution "Jackie" is particularly beguiling, touching on jagged punk funk as much as late 80s house with echo laden vocals smudged deep beneath a delightfully rubbery bass line and buccaneering, malfunctioning drums for six minutes. A promising debut from the label!

Review: Voice Notes is a new imprint run by London underground veteran Toby Tobias with Alphonse. A five track various artist EP, Voice Notes 002 is a time-honoured memorial for its sister label London Housing Trust, that they shut down a few years ago after 10 releases. Featuring tracks by label boss Tobias who delivers some emotive electro on 'Streets Of Gold', his evil twin Alphonse on the UK flava of 'Rujac', plus introducing Dance with the dub techno deconstruction of 'Amber', Rodney Bennett with the classic Stateside deep house of 'Palm Sunday' and Pyramids of Space with the downbeat IDM journey 'Quantis'.

Jamie Blanco - "Reline" (feat Sam Mensah - Blanco vs Alphonse version)
Bintus - "Crosstream"
Alphonse - "Learning To Breathe"
Facade - "Ain't For Pussies"
Review: The mysterious London Housing Trust return with a third vital offering with contributions from label regulars Jamie Blanco, Facade and Alphonse as well as a full debut for Power Vacuum boss Bintus! Blanco leads the way with "Reline" produced in collaboration with Alphonse and dominated by the crooning, soulful intonations of Sam Mensah - if you like those classic vocal house cuts from Chicago's early days this is for you. "Crosstream" sees Milo Smee reign in his capacity for balls out acid-rave-techno-freakouts, working at a house tempo that suits the Bintus sound equally well - think Funkineven's Apron material. The flip holds more house goodness from the aforementioned Alphonse and Facade with the latter's "Ain't For Pussies" particularly delightful.

ToneBreak 3 (3:57)
Review: When it comes to revivalist rave music, no other label does it quite as well as Tone Dropout. Their multi-artist EPs are invariably excellent and this seventh edition once again hits the mark. Dawl kicks things off via the fizzing "bleep and breaks" business of "Nebulon", before Daif dishes up some sweaty breakbeats and mind-altering analogue bass. Ascot and WW join forces for the bleep-goes-breakdance bustle of "FIFA 98", Alphonse wraps twisted acid lines and outer-space chords around a hip-house breakbeat ("Direct Transient"), and Jamie Blanco gets intense with the help of a bunch of TB-303 acid lines and some suitably jacking drums. In other words, it's another killer collection of saucer-eyed assaults on the senses.

Fx Mchn - "Dunn"
Alphonse - "No Tomorrow"
Facade - "Saranna"
Facade - "Take It Slow"
Review: The Juno review team couldn't help but raise our mugs of coffee at this fourth release from the London Housing Trust crew as it sees the return of the mysterious fx mchn. Yes this producer may belong in the increasingly over swilling category of artists with an aversion to vowels but he/she/they made LHT001 truly memorable with the roguish lo-fi punk funk of "Jackie". Clearly not a one hit wonder, fx mchn open proceedings here with another excellent, albeit much darker, production in the form of "Dunn" which is possibly dedicated to one of England's lost footballing talents and is a dark acid rave monster worthy of any TBA East London warehouse party. LHT regular Alphonse follows suite with a mutant house number that would ruffle Maurice Fulton's feathers whilst Facade hos the B Side with a pair of tracks that are respectively classic house and electro funk - the latter is excellent!

Akio Nagase - "Tinsagu-Nu-Hana" (7:08)
Review: Ever since the first white labels appeared at the end of Summer 2013, [Emotional] Especial has been putting out music that is slightly left of (club music) centre. Influenced as much by and including dub, electro, disco, proto-house, house and techno, guided more by a feeling than a sound.

This thinking has been that exemplified by every 10th release being a label sampler - a showcase of unreleased tracks or remixes of what has come before, plus the odd one off cut by an artist to watch. Some 4 years since the last Sampler, the label's 40th release presents new label heads Giraffi Dog, returning after their recent "live" Multiverse EPs, here teaming up with GF Rich for a breaks anthem. Sub bass rising, the persistent build leads to piano before drop and Acid mayhem ensues, highlight why G Dog are such a producer to watch.

Label mainstay Alphonse returns, with White Pepper from the "Stolen Sunrise EP", here remixed by House stalwart Toby Tobias. Having released for a who's who of labels including REKIDS, ESP Institute, Delusions Of Grandeur and Futureboogie, the illusion these past years of who is Alphonse can finally revealed as Toby himself. The remix of his alter ego takes the 'Balearics' of the original and adds breaks and 303, all retaining a laid back feeling for summers return.

On the flip, the label welcomes rising star, Remotif. With a series of EPs showcasing a growing talent, his recent Coymix release sealed the deal. Here, his comedically titled Beam Me Up Softwoiii belies a party anthem, where breaks and arps rise in unison before an Aphex sunrise burst, drops and heads down in pure dance.

Akio Nagase returns to close with another of his Japanese folk meets lilting 303 Acid House. An Okinawa traditional folk song, conveying a life lesson, here to Hosenka flower is laid across slo-mo acid bubbles to quirkily and perfectly complete another 10th release of the Especial path.

Kostas G - "Spectrum" (7:24)
Review: When it comes to excitable club fodder rooted in club sounds of the late 80s and 90s, the Tone Dropout crew consistently delivers the goods. They're at it again on their 11th multi-artist extravaganza, which giddily sprints between acid-fired breakbeat house with glassy-eyed melodic motifs and spacey bleeps (Sween and Alphonse hook-up 'Downfall'), trancey early progressive house revivalism ('Odyssey T3D' by XOTR), intergalactic electro-bleep fusion (the punchy, Kraftwerk-on-pills excellence of Samuel Padden's 'Teslas Still Alive') and classy bleep and breaks nostalgia (Kostas G's pleasingly sub-heavy, funk break-driven 'Spectrum').
