Headspace EP
Cat: FD 002. Rel: 18 Nov 20
Deep House
  1. All We Have (7:07)
  2. Shine On Me (Rollin To Detroit mix) (6:30)
  3. Headspace (5:04)
  4. After The Rain (6:17)
Review: Somehow, Alton Miller is a rather under-regraded, or certainly under exposed, members of the US house fraternity. He has turned out as many essential tracks as any of his peers, and continues to do so here on the fledgling Forbidden Dance label. He opens up with some of his typically musical house grooves, with loose drums, subtle acid sounds and lush melodies. A Rollin to Detroit mix of one of his older tunes 'Shine On Me' reworks it as a deep and jazzy number, while 'Headspace' slows to a downtempo crawl that sinks you in deep and 'After The Rain' explores slow motion cosmic synth work. Perfect.

Blue Funk
Blue Funk (12")
Cat: dbh 004. Rel: 16 Jul 20
Deep House
  1. Bliss (5:30)
  2. Lovin & Dancin (4:02)
  3. All Tonight (7:06)
  4. Blue Funk (5:10)
Review: Astonishingly, Alton Miller was already four years into his production career when the "Blue Funk EP" first dropped on short-lived Detroit techno label M3 way back in 1997. The Detroiter is of course still going strong, though his productions are now way more polished than they were back then. As this reissue proves, the rawness and energy of his (relatively) early productions remains highly addictive. Check for example the hot-stepping analogue Afro-house beats, rich bass and tasty keys of "Bliss", the breathlessly loopy sweatiness of "Lovin' & Dancing" - a kind of raw disco-house cut-up masterpiece - and the trippy, breakbeat-driven sample house intensity of "Blue Funk" itself. The smoothest track of all, the NJ deep house influenced "All Tonight", is closest in tone to his more recent productions.

Down For The Dance Love For The Beat EP
  1. Speaking Of Future (7:26)
  2. All The Time (6:16)
  3. Who Am I (Speechless version) (6:48)
Review: The Playground's first release of 2019 comes from a suitably storied source: Motor City deep house legend Alton Miller. Given that Miller was in fine form on his recent Local Talk outing, it's no surprise to find him ticking all the right boxes here, too. A-side "Speaking Of Future" is typical of his work, with alternately dreamy and spacey electronic elements winding themselves around a tough but groovy rhythm track. Combined, it's a recipe for eyes-closed, life affirming deep house bliss. Miller opts for a chunkier bassline and slightly bolder beats on the similarly attractive flipside opener "All The Time" before reaching for the starry jazz-funk synths, sun-kissed chord sequences and rich bass on closing cut "Who Am I (Speechless Version)".

When The Morning Comes (Rydm Sectors, Nico Lahs & KETAMA remixes)
Cat: AR 008. Rel: 18 Jan 22
Deep House
  1. Alton Miller - "When The Morning Comes" (feat Amp Fiddler - Rydm Sectors remix) (5:57)
  2. Alton Miller - "When The Morning Comes" (feat Amp Fiddler - Nico Lahs remix) (6:29)
  3. Alton Miller - "Ever Wonder" (Nico Lahs remix) (6:32)
  4. Alton Miller - "Ever Wonder" (KETAMA remix) (6:18)
Review: Bari meets Detroit on these superb remixes on offer here of Alton Miller & Amp Fiddler's 2010 anthem 'When The Morning Comes'. On the A side, Rydm Sectors deliver a rolling stomper of a rendition that still retains the deepness of the original, followed by the ever reliable Nico Lahs who serves up a dusty, KDJ influenced perspective and proceeds to rework 'Ever Wonder' over on the flipside side in emotive late night fashion. As does local duo KETAMA (Cosmic Rhythm) who hand in a soulful Afro house inspired remix.

Bring Me Down
Cat: SS 065. Rel: 20 Jan 17
Deep House
  1. Bring Me Down (9:32)
  2. Bring Me Down (Theo Parrish translation) (9:35)
Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.
