Hustle Do Brasil
Cat: KMPN 007. Rel: 06 Apr 21

Disco/Nu-Disco
Hustle Do Brasil (Aroop Roy rework) (4:28)
A Festa (Aroop Roy edit) (4:02)
Review: There's something special with these hush-hush reworks and re-edits as they breathe new life into dusty old Brazilian disco and boogie cuts. A-side 'Hustle Do Brazil' is a rambunctious, party-starting treat that turns a handful of loops from a piano-heavy South American disco record into a bouncy, disco-house slammer. He subtly switches tack on side B, delivering an edit of the deeper, smoother and jazzier 'A Festa', wisely prioritising his source material's spacey jazz-funk synths, heady party atmos, good grooves and even greater electric piano stabs. Samba-disco magic!

People Talk

Minimal/Tech House
People Talk (original) (6:51)
People Talk (acapella) (3:37)
Review: Brazilian tech house up and comer L_cio, known to his Mum as Laercio Schwantes Iorio finally gets his day on wax with this new one on the DOC label. On the A-side is "People Talk" with pop induced tech house reminiscent of the Kompakt style, moody as hell and big on atmosphere with uber cool male vocals courtesy of Japan based Brit Aroop Roy. On the flip is the accapella but it's more of a beatless version, keeping the druggy mesmerising melody and said uber cool vocals by Roy. A fine little 7" nugget from DOC.

Mama Mwana (5:47)
Re Bulele (feat Fox Meropa - FNX Omar remix) (6:24)
Re Bulele (feat Fox Meropa) (8:25)
Review: Nothing is tastier than some Freerange deep house and so it proves with this first new offering of the year from the venerated UK label. Aroop Roy is the man on the buttons and 'Mama Mwana' is the Afro opener that transports you to somewhere hot. Squeaky guitar lines unfurl over the warming rolling beats to a hypnotic effect. Next is a remix from Moroccan scene mainstay FNX Omar who flips 'Re Bulele' into a deeply sonorous affair with twinkling melodies and steamy vocal coos and the original version rounds out the EP with percussive, funky and soulful house grooves. A typically rich EP from this crew.

Disco/Nu-Disco
Tabu Afrique (6:56)
Magia (5:50)
Na Boko Samba (7:39)
Review: Neo Danza kicks off with a red hot release of super rare 80s tropical grooves that have been repurposed for contemporary dance floors. You can imagine these sort of jams getting plenty of plans by the likes of Rush Hour boss Antal and compadre Hunee as the weather begins to warm up. "Tabu Afrique" opens the EP in bristling afro disco fashion and with a big vocal, then things get a little more slow and emotional on "Magia". The standout might be "Na Boko Samba", a sizzling seven minute opus of unrestrained tropical disco funk.

Talkin Bout Life (6:58)
We Together (7:26)
Talkin Bout Life (Brisa remix) (4:26)
Review: Aroop Roy is a producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist from the UK. Be prepared for one well funky and soul infused journey on "Talkin Bout Life" which is perfect to bring in the summer of 2017. Funky elements, a serious horns section and strong vocals hold up this brilliant track. It's a more straight ahead deep house affair on the rather evocative "We Together" and actually its the kind of track you could imagine Derrick May or Dixon playing out; there are definitely elements of 'hi-tech soul' in it. The Brisa remix of Talkin Bout Life" on the flip is a worthy addition also.

Afrika My Home

I Listen
Afrika My Dub
Review: Aroop Roy is next up on Lazy Days, bringing his well honed house tones to the label in four varied takes on chunky hardware deep house. "Afrika My Home" is utterly infectious with its shuffling groove and warm, buttery keys. "Le Pasteur" takes some choice disco licks and runs them mercilessly through a filter for blissed out funk of the highest order, while "I Listen" gets into a sprightly, uplifting frame of mind as the most outright party starter on the record. "Afrika My Home" gets dubbed out at the end of the record and sounds even more potent for late night dancefloor sessions.

Flecha De Foga (5:58)
Todo Mundo Tem Amor (6:16)
Review: Aroop Roy returns to his "Brazil Breakdown" series for the first time in over two years. Not even taking a whole slew of singles on the likes of Basic Fingers, DOC, Kampana and House Of Disco into account, he's more than made up for lost time. "Flecha De Fogo" is a heavy sunset soul piece that works around a Nazare Pereira samba with woozy chords, layered percussion and an alluring vocal. "Todo Mundo Tem Amor" takes us deeper into Aroop's dancefloor psyche with a much more driving beat. Golden.

O Mestre
Review: Aroop delivers the third instalment of his "Brazil Breakdown" series with three of his floor-fired reworks to date. "Brilhantina" is a percussion-heavy slice of four-to-the-floor soul with synths straight out of the Detroit playbook. "Quem Vai Querer" ups the ante with a juicy bottom end (think mid 00's Yam Who), feel-good chants and a conga roll so hypnotic you'll be shaking your hips for hours. Finally we hit "O Mestre"; rich in warm reverbed synths and coated with a pristine-polished 80s soul vocal, this will work well on both sides of the night. Honey coated warm up or an emotional finale.

Xica Da Silva
A Gira
Esquindin Din
Review: Setting the foundations for this summer's emphatic exploration of all things Brazilian, Aroop's inaugural Brazil Breakdown EP came our way in October 2013. Scoring critical acclaim with all the right tastemakers and critics, he set the bench high, and naturally this sets it even higher. Three well-dug not-too-obvious classics, each one has been given the perfect amount of Aroop polish. Jorge Ben's "Xica Da Silva" gets a mild discofication by way of a gossamer bass lick, Trio Ternura's "A Gira" natural rhythmic insistency is emphasised with subtlety and Marcos Moran's conga-heavy "Esquindin Din" gets the uptempo facelift it's always dreamt of. Unlike the World Cup itself, re-edits like this are truly timeless.

Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser
Burguesinha
Review: His first original material since his Normadic Soul album a few years back, Aroop returns with a beautiful double dose of Latin spirit. "Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser" pays homage to Brazilian folk legend Milton Nascimento with a lolloping percussive jam. Driven by enveloping funk bass and great processing on the vocal, it's instantly hypnotic affair with perfect nuances of psychedelia weaved deep into the blend. Flip for "Burguesinha", a remarkable cover of Seu Jorge's classic. Paying full respect, Aroop has ramped the tempo and beefed up the groove while retaining every ounce the original's soul. Stunning stuff.

Review: "Too Long", by Roy Aroop, is a bossa-house ballad with a heart-warming vocal line and an irresistible groove that will pack any dancefloor. With vocals, guitar and keys all recorded live by Aroop himself, this track has an undeniable authenticity and soulfulness.

Tabala Mouv (Truccy edit)
Tabala Mouv
Review: Aroop Roy launches the Vive La Musique label with this effervescent blast of sunkissed Zouk music from the mid 80s. Maurice Agad, the writer responsible for "Tabala Mouv," was traced to the Caribbean island of Martinique, and it only helps feed into the exotic atmosphere surrounding the music. In its original form "Tabala Mouv" is a plush, richly produced groover laden with slap bass, strings, keys, horns and a wonderful meandering vocal. Roy beefs the track up with a rework that subtly edges a few modern touches into the mix, while Truccy offers up a simple edit of the track in its purest form.
