Deep House
Afro Galaga (5:52)
Escaped Drum (4:42)
Chief Sun Moon (6:12)
Review: Deepblak maestro Aybee is back in action on his home turf with a finely crafted selection of future-minded variations on the techno template, where rhythms shift and a cosmic sense of exploration reign supreme. "Afro Galaga" surges with a Motor City-informed pulse, but there's some signature Aybee looseness in the programming. "Escaped Drum" pushes this notion further out into broken beat territory without losing that urgent upthrust, before "Chief Sun Moon" swerves into deeper territory with a motif that wouldn't sound out of place on Livity Sound or a similar UK-rooted label.

In The (6:03)
The Scroll (6:15)
Veger (8:52)
Review: While Amon "Aybee" Bazile rarely puts a foot wrong, there was arguably a time when his releases were a little too frequent to register with buyers. Thankfully, he's simmered down in recent years, seemingly content to just release the cream of his studio productions. Certainly, Nexus shows the producer at the top of his game. Check the deep and spacey hypnotism of "The Scroll", where dreamy chord progressions seemingly float around an analogue rich deep house groove, and the broken techno headiness of "Veger". Both bubble along at a house tempo, but draw huge influence from Motor City futurism. Perhaps best of all, though, is opener "In The", a rolling, bongo-laden saunter into life-affirming outer-space deep house blessed with a rich and warming bassline.

Man Over Machine (9:51)
Build Them (Aybee Solstice mix) (6:02)
Legacy (5:03)
Melted Chains (1:35)
Review: Armon 'Aybee' Bazile is undoubtedly one of electronic music's most consistent performers. He's barely put a foot wrong since making his debut in 2004, and continues to deliver high-grade material on a regular basis. Predictably, there's plenty to get excited about on this 12", too. "Man Over Machine" is a winding, constantly building gem, with rising and falling, spaced out melody loops riding an off-kilter techno rhythm. On the flip, you'll find the deep space chord progressions, delay-laden electronics and deep tech-house grooves of "Build Them (Solstice Mix)", the intricate pianos solos and Soichi Terada style deep house vibes of "Legacy", and the off-kilter deep house/IDM fusion of "Melted Chains".

The Heart Of The Sun (10:50)
Review: Oakland's finest is back. Aybee returns on his always reliable Deepblak imprint to give us another dose of the real proper deep stuff! Just one side on this release from the man now in Berlin, but it's quality not quantity we say. "The Heart Of The Sun" is a raw and tunnelling cut with eerie synth melodies, a killer bassline and dark analogue drums giving this track its momentum and its edge! A fine taste of a long-mooted new Aybee album due on Deepblak in the coming months.

Metamorphosis
The Sky Is Ours
Centrifical Seduction
Review: On an unstoppable march into the deepest reaches of forward thinking electronic music, Aybee delivers once again with another slab of stunning vision on his own Deepblak. "Metamorphosis" starts the EP off in illustrious fashion with graceful sweeps of pads that flirt with a subtle kinked beat, and little else. "The Sky Is Ours" meanwhile revolves around a more stout 4/4 beat than we're used to from the Oakland producer, but still the extra percussive decoration pushes and pulls in alien formations that create a truly unique groove. "Centrifical Seduction" gets a touch more playful, as a nippy bassline darts around sombre synth notes and a stout handclap guides you through. Beats wise it may be more grounded than many Aybee records, but the feeling is still truly out of this world.

Wind Walkers
The Pursuit
Rahk
Review: Following recent outings on Sounds of the Universe, Deep Explorer and his own Deepblak imprint, Amon Bazile brings his brand of intergalactic deep house to Japan's Sound of Speed label. Happily, he's in fine form from the word go, with opener "Wind Walkers" layering spacey chords and bubbling melodies over an undulating, Motor City-influenced groove. "The Pursuit" is more cinematic and widescreen in approach, with drifting chords and disembodied vocal samples ushering in a yearning, analogue-sounding vision of deep house. Finally "Rahk" impresses with its combination of cheery keys, positive chords and loose, off-kilter house rhythms. Impressive stuff, all told.

A Novel Gesture
We Come In Peace
Akiara
Review: Always committed to bringing interesting rhythms to bear on the world of house and techno, Aybee is back on his home turf with a fresh salvo of off-kilter drums and otherworldly synth tones that further his quest into pastures new for time-honoured dance music. "A Novel Gesture" rumbles with gritty kicks and stalking dub techno chords, and yet still manages to sound nimble on its feet. "We Come In Peace" is more purposefully floaty, swirling as it does around a central pad that takes on a three dimensional shape through some clever sound design, with just a gentle house beat underneath to keep it moving. "Akiara" is a devout bliss-out track not least in its delayed and filtered pulses pitched perfectly for heavy-lidded transcendence.

Landing

Signals
Review: Oakland's Aybee remains one of the true unsung heroes of contemporary US house despite a stellar discography that revolves mostly around output on his own Deepblak label as well as numerous appearances on the likes of Underground Quality, Prescription and Further. Having decamped to the latter Seattle operation for his second LP, Aybee will return to Deepblak next month with his third long player Worlds, with three tracks featured here on this hand-stamped white label promo along with a bonus exclusive cut. Worlds will find Aybee is in fine fettle if this 12" is any indicator, with "Landing" setting a glacial, astral tone whose intricate rhythms are matched but never rehashed in the subsequent productions. "Solaris" is particularly worthy of your attention, expertly mutating from shifty sci-fi techno into full blown tech-step paranoia.

No Fiction
Ether
Kommands
Review: Deepblak come in from the stark, cold silence with their first transmission of 2012, the suitably titled Astral Metronome EP from label boss Aybee. Those familiar with the label will feel immediately at home amidst the expansive, smudged out sub frequencies of lead track "No Fiction" which soon becomes dominated by the rigid, snapping rhyhtms and a echoed out textural quality that is eerily akin to rust filled water dripping down your spine. Alongside it, "Ether" scratches granular dub techno abrasions into the gloopy bottom end whose viscous form threatens to offset the swing brought by the mechanical skip of drums. This 12" is added further singularity by the monolithic slab of low frequency analogue fudge that is "Kommands", which can only be described as sounding like Aybee mapping out a dystopian nightmare on a musical mainframe that gleefully disregards notions of genre.

Ozzie Davis
Cat: FV 004. Rel: 05 Oct 06

Deep House
Review: Aybee returns with a tribute to Ozzie Davis. With a life long commitment to the arts and the civil rights struggle, Ozzie Davis, along with actress wife Ruby Dee, have been a beacon of light to ensuing generations of black artists. Always remembered for his presence, and dignity, Davis had the unfortunate job of providing the eulogy for Dr Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. With this jam Aybee hopes to give respect, and eulogy to a spirit who's commitment to struggle serves as continual inspiration. Laced with and powerful foot and ethereal chords, Aybee paints a lifetime as he sees it. Laying down a robust 4/4 groove that commands the soul to move.

Strange Visitors (10:13)
Motion Of Attraction (7:40)
The Sacred Smoke (5:53)
Review: As Burek correctly note on their press release for this latest 12", we have become accustomed to expecting the unexpected from Deepblak man Aybee but still this collection of productions as The Bazile Republic is something special. Strange Visitor is the first of several planned releases themed around the story of a strange island, a celestial visitor, and mysterious doctor, and it will be interesting to see how Aybee develops this narrative. With just the three tracks to focus on for now, it's best to judge The Bazile Republic on it's musical merits and Aybee is on inspired form as ever. Few can match him when it comes to bending house music into compelling new shapes and "The Sacred Smoke" is a quite wonderful highlight.

Miles Sagnia - "Journey 2 Forever" (Visual Foci reprise)
Review: Aybee is one of those rare few that has managed to conquer a range of styles within his work from soul, techno, house and hip-hop under his many monikers. This time we see the artist team up with Miles Sagnia for two cuts each on the Eternal Radiance EP on Sagnia's Atmospheric Existence imprint. First, Aybee serves up "A Glance" which oozes with classic US house charm. Acoustic piano chords and are layered on top of a chugging bassline and electronic melody, tightly produced and melting in its warmth. "Isis" gets heavier with a more underground vibe of crashing echoes and tinny drum arrangements. Up next, Sagnia's "Journey 2 Forever" fuses multi-tracked choral chants, the impeccable sound of the Hammond and a rapid techy groove. His Visual Foci Reprise of "Journey 2 Forever" ditches the chants, instead opting for a sensual male vocal.

October - "Galactic Dawn"
Aybee - "ATCG"
Adam Lundberg - "Remember"
Dakini9 - "Daemon"
Review: Previous instalments of Soul People's Earth Tones series have featured the likes of Move D, Fred P and Joey Anderson, and the lineup on this fourth outing more than maintains these standards. October, Aybee, Adam Lundberg and Dakini 9 all feature and contribute house and techno of the deep and sensuous variety. Bristol don October's "Galactic Dawn" is a typically deep piece of cosmically-tinged house with synths wrung out like blankets soaked in space dust, while Aybee's "ATCG" is a classic piece of chord-driven house whose melodic elements are submerged beneath a deep layer of murky atmospherics. Adam Lundberg's "Remember" places breathy vocals over a dubby, brushed groove filled with sub-aquatic sounds, and Dakini9's "Daemon" hits the perfect mid-point between driving techno and a dreamy melodic sensibility.

Book 01 (10:09)
Book 02 (5:27)
Book 03 (5:15)
Review: Oakland's Aybee revisits his old alias Orion 70 for the next release on his always impressive Deepblak imprint. "Book 01" is dark and brooding acid techno with a gritty 303 arpeggio, hissing vintage drum machines and eerie pads that can only be described as vampire techno! Equally suited to creatures of the night is "Book 02" however this one shows more restraint and sees Aybee take on some dark and cinematic industrial soundscapes for a change and to convincing effect; another side to this producer yet! Finally on the flip there's "Book 03" which is definitely the most straight-ahead sounding track on here; a tough and adrenalised reduced techno cut with infectious repetitions that will satisfy cerebrally as it will physically on the dancefloor.

Orion 70 - "The Little King"
Aybee - "In Every Way Feat Omega"
Dozie - "Sensuality"
Orion 70 - "Technoir"
Review: Dubbyman's Deep Explorer label eases into their 31st release with Sounds From The Void a celebration of the production palette of Deepblak founding father Armon Bazile. All four tracks here are pulled from the Deepblak digital archives, with a pair of Orion 70 productions complemented by an Aybee cut and refix of Dozie. First up is the rattling, broken flex of "The Little King", an Orion 70 production from 2007 that's been pressed on vinyl for the first time and sounds just as fresh! "In Every Way" presents Aybee at his most soulful, with a restrained production that gives Omega's vocal the centre stage it deserves. A similar mood pervades Aybee's Midnight Creep refix of Dozie's "Superstar" whilst the taut and punchy "Technoir" from Orion 70 rounds out proceedings in a steadfastly futuristic vein.
