Review: Baba Stiltz is one of the greatest musical chameleons of our time. From the darkened booths of Europe's techno clubs, to the wild, open plains of half-imagined western Frontierlands, he's proven more than capable of turning a hand to an incredible variety of sounds, with a particularly lo-fi take on alternative indie rock, infused with a kind of contemporary country blend, coming to the fore more recently. Paid Testimony is, err, testimony to just how adept he is at conjuring images of small town USA. An album born from numerous trips that took the FilipinoAmerican-Swedish artist from Stockholm to northern California, it presents a series of archetypal characters summoned in some strange dream of what the latter region could and should be. People who plot bank heists, drink milk and vodka after midnight, and look for confrontation at every corner. A surreal, yet strangely poignant and universal gem.

We Both Know It's The Last Game We Play (6:59)
Review: Baba Stiltz isn't exactly the first name you'd associate to Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes, but the reality is that the producer's shady strain of deep house works perfectly well with the incorrigibly leftfield label. Moreover, Bankhead has never been one to shy away from anything that he likes, so it would be unfair to limit this incredible imprint to techno or noise. "Keep It Lit" kicks off with a warm, gloriously funky little house groove that reminds us of DJ Nature or even Kyle Hall's early productions whereas, on the flip, "BB 1-2" edges closer to typical TTT territories thanks to its deranged vocal samples and broken arrangement. "We Both Know It's The Last Game We Play" is similarly twisted, and verging towards just the right kind of dark and eerie. This is a fine, three-piece house EP with a hint of TTT's inimitable oddity. 5 stars.

Intrstllr (6:29)
Review: Given his penchant for energetic, eccentric and off-kilter dancefloor fare, it's perhaps not all that surprising that DJ Haus is a fan of Studio Barnhaus associate Baba Stiltz. Here, the latter makes his first appearance on the latter's Unknown To The Unknown label. "Cherry" is perhaps more raw and kaleidoscopic than his previous output, with nagging, rave-era piano hooks and pitched-up vocal samples riding a snappy, party-starting machine groove. "Intr Seller" is perhaps closer to his previous output, utilizing a well-known melody line and turning it into a strutting, cymbal-heavy Balearic club jam. There's a great bonus, too, in the shape of Legowelt's wild, synth-heavy, cut-up revision of "Cherry", with the Dutch maestro making merry with some particularly sweet and evocative synthesizer lines.

L Is L (3:08)
Review: Without resorting to hyperbole, Studio Barnhaus regular Baba Stiltz has yet to release a mediocre record. To date, his releases - think dusty, smoldering deep house blessed with some killer samples - have never been less than excellent. Die Hard+2 - his first EP since the release of debut album Total last autumn - is another fine 12". There's much to admire, from the fuzzy, kick-dominated beats and heart-aching samples of "Dei2", and the piano-heavy, chopped-up bounce of "Born 2 Live", to the eccentric, MPC-style experimental beat science of closer "L is L". In other words, it's another must-have release from Senor Stiltz.

Review: It's taken Baba Stiltz a while to settle on a sound of his own. While his early material - released as far back as 2011 - stuck rigidly to skwee and hip-hop influenced downtempo grooves, latter projects for Studio Barnhus have seen him head in a much more immersive deep house direction. This imaginative and eccentric debut album, presented as a doublepack with full artwork, stitches together these disparate strands. The results are impressive, with vibrant, Balearic-influenced deep house cuts nestling side by side with robust acid jams, scratchy downtempo grooves, grandiose synthesizer soundscapes and skewed instrumental pop. It's an assured and curiously off-kilter debut, which should appeal to those who enjoy more leftfield strains of deep house.

Aches
U
€ Prom
Review: After the gnarly bassline from his track "Palats" from his first of now three Studio Barnhus 12"s this year, Baba Stiltz dodges the big room antics this time for something more emotional. The young Swede squeezes mournful licks of acid out of his 303 for the euphoric "Aches" which should be a lesson to others on how to extract soul from a machine. The B-side features two tracks, and the first, "U" is a melancholic waltz through video game-like synths and toy tone atmospheres, while a beatless but throbbing "€ Prom" is a second lesson in production, this time: Arpeggios.

Principles
Principles
Review: Kornel Kovacs, Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist Studio Barnhaus label can usually be relied upon to deliver the sort of curiously left-of-centre deep house that offers more than mere straight-up dancefloor thrills. That's certainly the case on the latest slab of eccentricity from label regular Baba Stiltz. While "Transit" itself is the epitome of eccentric - think vintage acid house fused with early '80s New York electro and dreamy electronica - it's the jazzy "Principles", all lolloping rhythms and fiercely cut-up rhythms that really impresses. Even odder is "Principles Oh So Fresh", which dispenses with the beats and concentrates on the original's chiming music box melodies.

Our Girls 1
Our Girls 2
Our Girls 3
Review: Having already featured on Samo & Sling's Born Free label as well as the fledgling Under Bron, young Stockholm based producer and selector Baba Stiltz adds a more established and venerable Swedish operation to his prospering discography with the first of several releases for Studio Barnhus. Overseen by Axel Boman, Kornel Kovacs and Petter Nordkvist, the Studio Barnhus label has a long established sense for not taking themselves seriously and this obviously appeals to Baba Stiltz whose debut release for the label presents three variations on "Our Girls". All three were apparently recorded straight to tape and the tempo gets gradually slower with each track; naturally the bouncy, effervescent nature of the A Side rendition will appeal most to fans of straight house music, but the music gets more woozy and psychedelically intoxicating the slower it becomes. More please!

Running Ame (Worlds)
Dive (Phillip Lauer remix)
Review: With a brief history in Skweee behind him, Baba Stiltz is re-aligning his creative focus towards melodic, detailed tech house, notching up this release for fellow Scandinavian operators Under Bron. "Dive" is a rugged affair with an insistent momentum to it, keeping the bottom end pumping away with a deep intent while the top end is populated by emotive keys. "Running Ame (Worlds)" is a more unusual affair, fusing auto tune vocals with a lilting, Balearic kind of house shuffle, both sunny and strange in its demeanor. Providing a stark contrast to those two offerings, Phillip Lauer's remix of "Dive" is a stripped down coldwave exercise full of VHS romanticism and powered by motoring arpeggios working away in the distance.

Samo DJ + Tzusing - "Hollabackboi" (3:31)
Review: Munich nu-balearic crew Public Possession broaden their horizons beyond said sensibilities, but instead venture further into oddball groove territory; in this case it's Sweden. First up Born Free main man Samo DJ delivers the low slung funk groove of "Triad Board Meeting" (sounding like some creepy, old midi file.. yet not altogether unpleasant) while Baba Stilz delivers some of the weirdest deep house you'll hear this year on on "Pacific Times" and "Beirut" respectively. But they save the best for last on the explosive collaboration between Samo and Cititrax troublemaker Tzusing on "Hollabackboi", a smashing, pop-inflected curveball that'll flip your mind.

Baba Stiltz - "ABBA-Dubb" (10:05)
Pedrodollar - "Love Me Now-Dubb" (9:28)
Review: Here's a treat for all those who've fallen in love with the eccentric, anything goes deep house antics of Sweden's Studio Barnhus label: a double-pack, nestled in a transparent plastic sleeve, featuring brand new dubs of vintage label material. Axel Boman kicks things off with a wonderfully rolling, tactile version of his jazz-flecked summertime bomb "Mogadishu", before Shakarchi and Straneus get all twinkling and Balearic with a decidedly touchy-feely take on "ABBA". Side three boasts another "ABBA-Dubb", this time from Baba Stiltz, who adds a little Latin flavour to proceedings before dropping into a colossal bassline, ragged electronics and glitchy rhythms. Finally, Pedrodollar's disco-influenced anthem "Love Me Now" is given the "Dubb" treatment, with particularly delicious results.

Kling Party (9:09)
Denzil Adventure (5:54)
Review: The latest missive on Stockholm's Born Free is a collaboration between two like-minded Swedes: label co-founder Samo DJ and Baba Stiltz. It's not their first hook-up on the imprint, either, though it is the first since both producers' profiles began to rise. The real killer is A-side "Kling Party", a humid and intoxicating affair that's as hypnotic as it is gently wayward. There are remarkably few elements involved - think gently undulating dream machine beats, echoing effects, dub style sub-bass and twinkling synthesizer motifs - but they come together so well that you hardly notice. Mind you, we wouldn't have expected anything less.
