Out To Rust
Review: Over the last few years, we've learned not to second-guess the content of Call Super records. The producer has done a successful job carving his own particular niche, delivering releases that pay their dues to the dancefloor while also exploring the worlds of ambient and experimental electronica. Predictably, he's at it again on sophomore set Arpo, unfurling a fine selection of tracks that variously touch on clarinet-laden soundscapes, deep space Balearica, fizzing, footwork-inspired beat-scapes, mid-'90s intelligent techno, Aphex Twin style IDM, sun-dried bass music experimentation and saucer-eyed ambient. It's thrillingly hard to pigeonhole, mostly free of surging club tracks and hugely atmospheric from start to finish.

Puppet Sense (7:00)
New Life Repercussions (8:04)
Review: Call Super is back on Houndstooth, following up that great Nervous Sex Traffic release on Dekmantel with another killer two tracker entitled New Life Tones. There's some immersive high fidelity deepness to be heard on "Puppet Sense" with its booming baseline, echo laden atmospherics and futuristic sound design taking you somewhere else entirely. On the flip, "New Life Repercussions" gets a four to the floor beat on to power away beneath some tunnelling sonar aesthetics and entrancing pads to marvellous effect. Forward thinking stuff as always from this guy!

Deep House
Migrant (7:03)
Meltintu (7:57)
Review: Call Super's 2014 debut album for Fabric's Houndstooth label was something of a triumph; a hugely entertaining collection of off-kilter techno compositions and melodious, far-sighted deep house workouts. A year on, he returns to the label with a fine two-tracker that should cement his reputation as one of electronic music's most unique voices. A-side "Migrant" sets the tone, with dextrous, bongo-laden beats and a jaunty synth bassline underpinning rich chords and emotion-stirring melodies. Flipside "Melintu" takes a similar approach, with additional layers of bright-eyed, Detroit-inspired melodies perfectly matching his tough-but-tactile, low-end grooves.

Experimental/Electronic
Sulu Sekou (7" version)
Coney Storm Drain (extended version)
Review: Ahead of the drop of his debut album, Houndstooth are sneaking out this little 7" shaped taster to give expectant Call Super fans an idea of what they're in for come the big release date. "Sulu Sekou" is a finely woven electronica tale enriched with haunting instrumentation that piles romance and mystery into the endearing pops and fidgets of the homespun rhythm. It's a decidedly mellow excursion compared to the previous Call Super singles, lifting the lid on the exciting new avenues down which the artist is headed. "Coney Storm Drain" appears here in an extended version that finds a base layer of micro-static and winsome melody interfered with by scattered rasps of percussion, building in intensity without ever feeling too anchored to any one direction, like any good exercise in experimentalism.

Review: As the Houndstooth roster becomes increasingly diversified with age, so Call Super remains the label's brightest star. Responsible for inaugurating the Fabric-housed operation, J R Seaton has subsequently gone on to deliver some of their best 12" offerings and the time feels right for the Berlin-based producer to show his hand at full length albums. In contrast to the techno-focused approach of his Call Super 12"s, Suzi Ecto finds Seaton expanding on his palette with 11 tracks that veer wonderfully between moments of electronic poignancy and more thrusting fare. Spend some time with Suzi Ecto and you'll find it to be one of this year's most rewarding listens with new favourites emerging with each cycle - "Raindance" is the current fave here at Juno HQ.

Acephale II
Review: Depicta/Acephale II marks Call Super's third appearance on Houndstooth, and it contains what is easily some of the Berlin-based producer's fiercest tracks to date. "Depicta" features the kind of hefty 4/4 kick drums that would make Jeff Mills jealous, combining them with otherworldly pads which seem to blend into one another like ink being added to water; "Acephale II" takes a similar approach but is joined percussion that sounds like a stream of pure data travelling down a knackered copper wire. Another record to add to Call Super's flawless run of form.

Black Octagons
Review: Best known as Call Super, Berlin-based producer JR Seaton was given the honour of inaugurating Fabric's Houndstooth label back in February with the The Present Tense EP, building on his productions for Five Easy Pieces, Throne Of Blood and Relish with a stunning EP of highly detailed techno whose rich textural approach stood out amongst an increasing ocean of industrial sounds. With Houndstooth now established as one of this year's breakthrough labels, Seaton returns with a second offering in the shape of the Black Octagons EP that further extends his grounding as one of techno's most under rated talents. Three tracks deep, Seaton demonstrates a wonderful capacity to mould eye catching productions from glistening tones and scuffed rhythms in a manner that has echoes of Actress and Terrence Dixon.
