Bicep - "Feel It"
Rick Wade - "Free"
DJ Sprinkles - "Kissing Costs Extra"
Review: The Kolour Ltd label breaks radio silence and does it in style with the heavy hitting It's House Not House EP featuring contributions from Bicep, Rick Wade and DJ Sprinkles! Finding themselves in such respected company, Bicep elect to celebrate their Kolour Ltd debut by granting "Feel It" the vinyl platform it deserves, with the track a much requested secret weapon of their DJ sets. Rick Wade keeps up his near 100% appearance record in the weekly release schedules with "Free" a gem from his late 90s past whilst the flip has DJ Sprinkles going deep in the producer's own inimitably vintage style across 11 minutes on "Kissing Costs Extra".

Hard Ton: Food Of Love (Sprinkles Dubberama)
Hard Ton: Food Of Love (Sprinkles Grub dub)
Hard Ton: Food Of Love (Sprinkles Latex Lament)
Review: This fourth vinyl sampler for DJ Sprinkles superb Queerifications & Ruins compilation - a collection of his finest deep, dubby, stretched-out remixes - features a trio of versions of Hard Ton's "Food Of Love", including one previously unreleased interpretation. It was the 12-minute "Dubberama" version - a brilliant voyage into heady, dubby deep house built around a rock solid groove - that appeared on the compilation. Here it's joined by the sweet, soul-flecked "Deeperama" mix - as featured on the original Hard Ton 12" on Toy Tronics - and the previously unheard "Latex Lament" mix. This is particularly picturesque, removing all semblence of groove to leave a sunrise-inspired fusion of twinkling jazz pianos, heady chords and occasional snippets of vocal.

Ducktails - "Letter Of Intent" (Sprinkles Post Script)
Adultnapper - "Low Point On High Ground" (Rock Bottom mix)
Review: The Mule Musiq label returns to Queerification And Ruins, their sublime retrospective of DJ Sprinkles for a third vinyl sampler! In original format the double disc release ranks as one of the Juno review team's favourite compilations so far and it's nice to see two more of Terre Thaemlitz's wholly imaginative reworks culled for 12" duty. Leading the way is compilation's curveball inclusion; the nine minute DJ Sprinkles 'Post Script' take on "Letters Of Intent" by Ducktails which is a perfect example of the producer's ingenuity when it comes to approaching remixes - in a word epic! On the flip is the 13 minute DJ Sprinkles 'Rock Bottom' take on "Low Point On High Ground" from Adultnapper's 2010 Simple release of the same name.

Lost Area (DJ Sprinkles Lost Dancefloor original version)
Lost Area (DJ Sprinkles Empty Dancefloor original version)
Review: Lifted from his impending collection of remixes on Mule Musiq, DJ Sprinkles turns the spotlight on his two contrasting versions of June's "Lost" for a perfectly balanced 12". On the A-side you get to enjoy Sprinkles in righteous party mode, dropping a classic funk break vibe over a fulsome bass before working in romantic sweeps of strings and vocal. Meanwhile on the flipside the beat is dropped in favour of blissful piano ringing out over wistful pads while the vocal hangs suspended in mid-air, for one of those all-time spiritual eyes-closed adrift-at-sea moments. Depending on which side you need at what time, you won't be able to go far wrong with this beauty.

Down Home Kami - Sakunobe
Hobo Train
Review: Adorning ten inches of clear red vinyl, Skylax present the latest in their series of Terre Thaemlitz curated House Explosion releases. Volume 3 sees the house music polemicist present live versions of tracks that were part of Electronics, his 2008 collaboration with conceptual German noise orchestra Zeitkratzer. Recorded in Berlin, Sprinkles drops live acoustic versions of "Down Home Kami - Sakunobe" and "Hobo Train" which stretch the concepts of what passes for deep house brilliantly. This is resolutely not music you'd bang in a warehouse at 2am and is a marked contrast to the deranged Moodymannisns of the recent House Explosion Vol 2 but Sprinkles fans will love this.

Crosstown
Infected
Review: Skylax swiftly deliver a second dose of Terre Thaemlitz's House Explosion musical schizophrenia with the standard of the first DJ Sprinkles vs KSHE twelve inch more than matched with the two tracks on this lemon yellow record. There's such a richness in musical texture to both "Crosstown" and "Infected" it takes several listens for everything to sink in. "Crosstown" contains the idiosyncratic socio political commentary on pan sexuality you'd expect from a Sprinkles production, but it's wrapped in a finely balanced and stunning arrangement of shuffling percussion, ethereal harmonies and lusciously spectral organs. The opposing counterpart "Infected" is just as impressive, perhaps lifting the dramatic strings from Madonna's "Vogue" and slipping them behind a KDJ style surfeit of heavily processed vocal loops, bustling key riffs and multi faceted percussion.

Review: Terre Thaemlitz, aka DJ Sprinkles, is one of those producers whose career has never been as widely celebrated as it deserves, despite a back catalogue rich in atmospheric depth and off-kilter approach. Hopefully, this bleary-eyed mix album for Mule Musiq will inspire a reappraisal. Packed with warm, woozy tracks, long-forgotten US house gems (Gene Farris's disco-flecked "Good Feeling" and, more impressively, a 1993 deep garage remix from BT in his pre progressive house days), deep house classics (Keys & Tronics Ensemble's decidedly Balearic "Calypso of House", a dash of Fingers Inc) and on-point contemporary selections (Manoo & Francois A), it doesn't so much bristle with energy as slip between the speakers on a wave of saucer-eyed love.

Double Secret
Fuck The Down Low
Hobo Train
Review: Skylax treat our ears to the second dose of Terre Thaemlitz's musically brilliant schizophrenia in a matter of months. June's "Hush Now" was one of this year's more enduring deep house jackers and on this latest DJ Sprinkles Vs K.S.H.E 12" Thaemlitz doubles the quantity of tracks but retains the quality. "Down Home Kami-Sakunobe" eases you in with the odd but bewitching combination of violin strings, intermittent piano flourishes, overdubbed percussive shuffles and glacial breathing. Cavernous atmospheric abound on "Double Secret" which is dominated by bass notes of true warmth and the tingling interplay between soft piano and haunting vocals. "Fuck The Down Low" completes the proceedings on the A Side with a short but oh so sweet Moodymann esque bumper replete with a sample familiar to Beastie Boys fans. The real gold is reserved for the B Side with "Hobo Train", a raw percussive delight. You will be totally captivated from the early moment that the cavalcade of heavily compressed hi-hats take centre stage.

Review: Skylax head honcho Hardrock Striker teams up with DJ Sprinkles, celebrating two decades of Skylax Records and bringing politics to the dancefloor on Skylax House Explosion (S.H.E.). They present the second of three exclusive vinyl releases, accompanying the mix CD for the 20-year compilation. On this volume, Turkish producer Sinan Kaya kicks off the A-side with the classic deep house vibe of "What's Mine is Mine" a sexy/smoky jam for the late night, Parisian Flabaire gets deep down and dusty (as always) on the jazzy "Riders In The Sun". On the flip, Slowdawn picks up the pace with his energetic yet emotive "Don't Play Around" and closing the EP is Sameed Alexander Rezayan with the sweltering disco cut-up "See Ma Thang On You".

Review: Having previously danced "Under the Garage" and "Under The Loft", old pals DJ Sprinkles and Hardrock Striker are now throwing shapes beneath "The Ballroom" on this third and final part of the exclusive vinyl series accompanying their celebratory Skylax House Explosion mix CD. Fittingly, there's a trio of tracks to choose from, beginning with the tactile, loved-out dream house chords, fluttering FM synthesizer melodies and rubbery, retro-futurist Balearic house grooves of Lauer's "Bigs". Octa Octa steals the show with the alternately chiming and dreamily deep "Running" - all eyes-closed synthesizer melodies, elongated chords, cut-up vocals and snappy drum machine percussion - while "Soleil Mauve" by Violence FM and The Underground Soulsavers is an effortlessly good chunk of dreamy, melodious and ultra-deep house.

Review: Given that it's been 14 years since French producer Hardrock Striker established the Skylax label, this retrospective catalogue mix-up has been a long time coming. Old friend DJ Sprinkles handles disc one, delivering a mix that brilliantly blends her uniquely dubby and spaced-out take on house music with dusty, soulful and largely U.S-centric deep house jams from the likes of Sameed, Lady Blaktronika, Chez Damier, Joey Kay and Carlos Nilmmns. On the second disc, Hardrock Striker focuses on more recent label material, whizzing through a swathe of tactile, deep and groovy retro-futurist cuts from the likes of Octa Octa, Niko Marks, Groove Riddim and Garage Shelter.

Insights (Sprinkles alternate mix) (9:46)
Fresh (Sprinkles alternate mix) (10:59)
Review: After their surprise joining of forces back in 2012, DJ Sprinkles and Mark Fell have rekindled their collaboration with the Fresh Insights 12", and following on from the blink-and-you'll-miss-it first release, this second round features some alternative mixes from DJ Sprinkles. First up is "Insights", which sounds positively sumptuous with a classically Sprinkles-style house groove accentuated by the glossy synth tones you can hear in plenty of Mark Fell's output. Meanwhile on the flip a powerful speech from Tony Benn brings a politicised tone to the deep house surroundings of "Fresh", his social fervour a surprisingly neat fit for the easy-going atmosphere.

Fresh
Review: Back in 2012, DJ Sprinkles and Mark Fell surprised everyone with the release of The Complete Spiral, a collaborative 12" on the former's Comatonse label that brandished three sublime exercises in classicist deep house. It was made all the more distinctive by the usage of a vocal sample from '80s Trade Unionist Arthur Scargill, perhaps a knowing nod to all the deep house producers over the years that have sampled that Martin Luther King speech. Some three years on and the pair return with a new 12", Fresh Insights (EP 1), which suggests there will be further insights forthcoming from Fell and Sprinkles. Again the production is spot on, be it the simple exercise in chord rich instrumental deepness that is "Insights" or the lead track "Fresh" which utilises more spoken words, this time from Tony Benn.

Complete Spiral
Say It Slow (N U M mix)
Say It Slow (Hee Haw mix)
Review: The Complete Spiral EP makes for a superb if quite unexpected release from DJ Sprinkles and SND's Mark Fell, delivering three tracks of effervescent throwback NY house steeped in a musical heritage from two pioneers of electronic music who experienced it first time round. At twelve minutes long the title track is the undoubted centrepiece here, with the extended length allowing both Fell and Sprinkles to work their magic on a eminently slinky and wondrous level, intricate little polyrhythms slipping elegantly in line with liquefied melodics - it's the sort of house track you'd quite happily turn mad listening to on repeat as infinity approached. Complementing this, "Say It Slow (N U M mix)" allows Sprinkles the chance to indulge his political side, sampling a speech from 80s Trade Unionist Arthur Scargill over a bumping, organ heavy groove, whilst the Hee Haw Mix replaces Arthur's distinct tones with some neat little vocal stabs. Pricey yes, but undoubtedly one of the 12"s of the year so far!

Review: Not content with compiling one of this year's best mix CDs in Where Dancefloors Stand Still, Terre Thaemlitz and Mule come together again for this wondrous retrospective package of the producer's own remix work entitled Queerification And Ruins. The 14 track, double-disc package includes four previously unreleased reworks by the Comatose Recordings boss, along with plenty of his recent work under the DJ Sprinkles name, with highlights aplenty. Immediate standouts include the extended take on Marco Bernardi's "Klinsfrar Melode", the self styled 'Dubberama" of Hard Ton's "Food Of Love" and the eleven and a half minutes of bliss that is the Deep Breath mix of "Exhalation" by Parallax Brother. In truth though, all fourteen tracks are sublime.
