Escapade (5:41)
Cyclops (5:58)
Future World (5:07)
Review: Fresh from recent releases for Acid Boom, Klasse Wrecks and Craigie Knowes, Dawl continues his exploration of ear-snagging electro on this latest missive for Planet 17. 'Escapade' is a bleep-heavy workout with plenty of jack and an acidic quality despite the apparent lack of 303, while 'Cyclops' favours a trippier sound-set with plenty of disorienting effects flair. 'Future World' completes the picture with head-twisting synth lines pitched at the later end of the night and some deliciously boxy beats that capture the mystical energy of those early bleep records in fine style.

Soundwave Disorder (5:42)

Close Your Eyes (5:39)
I Am The Energy (6:19)
Review: While the Vinyl Fanatiks label may deal in reissuing some of the less heralded pioneers of breakbeat, hardcore and acid, their Acid Boom sub label is also ready to embrace newer producers keeping the sound alive with a degree of authenticity. As such, they've done the right thing in tapping up Dawl, who delivers the kind of moody, grubby squat party gear that sounds like it's got the spirit of 88 pumping in its veins. The acid squelch on 'Close Your Eyes' and titular sample speaks directly to the kind of edgy sound cemented in UK rave lore at the RIP parties at Clink Street, where grittiness and sinister moods prevailed. You can always spot newer artists who quite simply get it, and Dawl is definitely one of them.

Do It Like This (6:01)
Hyper Charged (6:18)
Terrorformer (5:52)
Review: If there's one word we'd use to describe Dawl's retro-futirst techno releases, many of which mine turn-of-the-90s bleep & bass for inspiration, it would be "energy". The producer's first outing on Craigie Knowes continues in this vein, delivering breathless, often bass-heavy thrills of the kind that wouldn't have sounded out of place on dancefloors in 1990 or '91. Opener 'System Check', for example, adds fizzing rave riffs and Xon style electronics to a sub-heavy bleep & breaks groove, while 'Do It Like This' explores similar sonic territory while giving greater prominence to raw bleep melodies and trippy TB-303 lines. Over on side B, 'Hyper Charged' is a dreamier and more intergalactic, sub-heavy breaks workout, while 'Terrorformer' sounds like an electro-fired re-make of LFO's 'LFO' with added basement-bothering sonic menace.

Review: Amen Brother asked Darren Woolard aka DAWL, said to be a regular customer of Vinyl Fanatiks from the hardcore generation, to use his knowledge of the scene to create 'a proper little rave induced banger' and here are the results. Four ravey breakbeat numbers await you on the Pump Up The Noise EP featuring the euphoric, Mentasm-laden energy of 'Moonstruck' which kicks things off, followed by the title track which is packed full of Todd Terry style motifs mixed in with MC chants and rewinds. Over on the flip, it's all about the proto jungle vibe of the menacing 'Freak Of Nature'.

Pocket Universe (6:25)
Review: Since debuting as Dawl nine years ago, Tone Dropout co-founder Darren Woollard has become one of the most trusted producers of revivalist '90s fare, with a trademark sound that mixes and matches elements from various vintage styles of techno and electro. That attractive, mind-altering personal sound is much in evidence on this EP for Unknown To The Unknown, which wholeheartedly pays tribute to the turn-of-the-'90s Yorkshire bleep & bass sound. Those versed in the style's history will notice a few knowing winks to various underground classics - the title track sounds like an unreleased track from Richard H Kirk and Rob Gordon's short-lived XON project, for example - while the important ingredients (deep sub bass, alien bleeps, unfussy house-tempo techno drums and crunchy hardcore breaks) are all present and correct. A delicious blast from the past from a genuine student of the style.

Review: Born Abstract is a debut album from UK bleep and breakbeat master DAWL aka Dropout main man Darren Woollard on the Childhood Intelligence label. It's an intergalactic trip back to the future, with computerised melodies and heavy drums on 'Quadrant 6' then more manic techno stomps on 'Red Sky.' Elsewhere things get deep on 'Recon' a slippery and supple track with rich acid. 'Quantoum Jam' heads into electro territory and then it's an old school rave on 'I'm Confused'. Born Abstract is fun, fulsome, fantastic and as good as retro-future techno gets.

Review: Tribe Recordings' second missive is another standout techno affair, this time from Dawl who has been making big moves this year on Better Sound Italy, Tone Dropout and Hypnohouse. His futuristic sound hits that perfect sweet spot between techno and electro, all with a deeply cosmic edge. "Want Some Candy" manages to be super slick and sleek with a pumping bassline that will wiggle your backside. The intergalactic journey continues on the more textured and brain frying "Voyage" and completes with the acid laced jack track "Just Hausin" which is a real fist pumper.

Review: In our opinion, there are few labels out there quite as consistent as Craigie Knowes. The Scottish imprint has been on fire of late, and this label debut from Tone Dropout and Klasse Wrecks regular Darren "Dawl" Woollard is another surefire winner. There's a sweaty, saucer-eyed feel to the EP, from the acid-fired breakbeat madness of throbbing opener "Let's Go" and the accurately titled insanity of "Heavyweight" - all chopped-up rave-era riffs, booming bass and skittish drums - to the mind-altering acid psychedelia of hypnotic closing cut "Overdub" and the warehouse-friendly 1990 breakbeat hardcore skip of sub-heavy smasher "Drop It". In other words, it's a reliably charged-up set of misty-eyed workouts.

Tune In Space (5:49)
Alpha 101 (6:27)
Dark Space (6:48)
Review: Over the last year or two, Darren "Dawl" Woollard has proved to be one of British techno's most on-point revivalists. Here he pops up on Libertine with more mind-altering peak-time fare full of subtle references to records of old. There's something particularly wild and psychedelic about EP opener "Bad Trip", a throbbing chunk of mid-tempo techno rich in ghostly chords, glassy-eyed spoken word samples and layer upon layer of TB-303 acid lines. "Tune In Space" doffs a suitably oversized cap to "bleep and breaks" style early UK hardcore (think "LFO" chords, "Testone" bleeps, heavy sub bass and skittish drums), while "Alpha 101" sounds like the kind of record "Evil" Eddie Richards might have made around 1990. "Dark Space" meanwhile, is a killer electro cut laden in bleep-style melodies.

Cosmic Drift (5:57)
Review: For the uninitiated, Dawl is the alias of one Darren Woollard - a London based producer in charge of Tone Dropout since 2013. He has also served up some great releases of late on Berlin imprints Libertine and Klasse Wrecks. His new Infected System EP is for Shadow Play, a Paris based operation run by veteran DJ Le Loup (aka Hold Youth) and Pura. Classic UK rave aesthetics of yesteryear are catered for on "Bring It Back" with snarling 303 acid accompanied by fierce breakbeat action. On the flip are he pays homage to Yorkshire techno on the tunnelling banger "Parranoia" which uses more of that signature TB-303 sound and the deeply emotive hypnotism of "Cosmic Drift".

Brutal Science (5:25)
The Key (6:37)
First High (6:39)
Bleek (5:54)
Review: Previously, Darren "Dawl" Woollard has specialized in contributing tracks to compilation style EPs. Here, he finally gets a chance to showcase his wares on a solo EP of his own. Wisely, he's decided to use the opportunity to showcase some of his vintage influences. Opener "Brutal Science", for example, sees him stick a thrillingly rubbery synth bassline underneath cut-up early hardcore breakbeats, while "First High" is the kind of intergalactic, bleep-heavy roller that could have been made by LFO or Forgemasters way back in 1989. Bleep seems to be a big influence on Woollard, because the style's trademark sparse electronic melodies and heavy bass can also be heard on closer "Bleek" and standout "The Key", which thrillingly joins the dots between those heady Yorkshire sounds and punchy beatbox electro.

Review: When it comes to revivalist rave music, no other label does it quite as well as Tone Dropout. Their multi-artist EPs are invariably excellent and this seventh edition once again hits the mark. Dawl kicks things off via the fizzing "bleep and breaks" business of "Nebulon", before Daif dishes up some sweaty breakbeats and mind-altering analogue bass. Ascot and WW join forces for the bleep-goes-breakdance bustle of "FIFA 98", Alphonse wraps twisted acid lines and outer-space chords around a hip-house breakbeat ("Direct Transient"), and Jamie Blanco gets intense with the help of a bunch of TB-303 acid lines and some suitably jacking drums. In other words, it's another killer collection of saucer-eyed assaults on the senses.

Review: When it comes to retro-futurist, analogue-rich gems inspired by turn-of-the-'90s electronic music, there's no more reliable outlet than Tone Dropout. The label's latest drop - their tenth multi-artist extravagana - is once again packed with cuts that sound like they could have been made in 1990 or '91. Boss man Dawl kicks things off with a cracking fusion of punchy electro and bleep & bass ('Into Andromeda'), before Escape Earth deliver a dash of acid-flecked breakbeat hardcore ('Impact Event') and Kiddmisha explores acid-electro pastures on 'Retrodance'. The body popping fun continues apace on side B opener 'Evolution 1', a punchy electro club cut from The He Men - before Marino draws things to a close via the rumbling bass, skittish breakbeats and moody chords of 'Rave Alarm'.

Review: The second release of Flight Mode has landed with four artists from four different countries. On the A-side, Dawl delivers 'Microbe', a sleek acid slow burning that truly stalks the listener, before Kiddmisha ups the speed and the eerie moodiness with 'Anxiety'. Acid Charlie's 'Por La Paz' has the most old school favour of the quartet - even before sirens hit - underpinned by a thunderous drum machine. Then the mysterious producer SPAC closes the single with more cunningly employed acid shenanigans.

Cybernetik Synergy is their latest and it's a collaborative affair between Dawe and Luca Lozano that brings out the best in both. 'Data Transfer' is electrified broken beat techno with fizzing synth malfunctions, wispy stabs and fractured vocals for raw rave vibes. Review: Saucer-eyed rave revivalists Tone Dropout can usually be relied upon to deliver the goods, especially if you're looking for sweaty, energy-packed slabs of warehouse ready techno, acid and electro. The label's latest missive is packed to the rafters with such giddy and forthright fare, to the bleeping, mind-altering insanity of Dawl & Sween's acid-fired throb-job "Laser Guided", to the "Bleep and Breaks" pressure of Samuel Padden's bustling "Quad Damage", to the stripped-back machine techno heaviness of Daif's similarly bleepy "Mysterious Freakin History". Elsewhere, the Ascot/WW track sits somewhere between early breakbeat hardcore and ambient techno, while Skywave Transmission v XOTR's "Warehouse 101" lives up to its name. Serious heat!

Review: Leeds-born session Hearlucinate makes the leap to wax with a special series of 12"s that correspond to line-ups for parties in London, spearheaded by resident Tristan da Cunha. On this first release, Dawl shores up on the A side and sets the bar very high indeed with the killer bleep techno stylings of "Energy Overdrive" and the tough, punchy electro of "Cyborg". Da Cunha himself follows up on the B side with the equally tough and thumping "Move (Let Me See U)", a seedy and sensual peak timer if we ever heard one. Freakenstein completes the set with a rabble-rousing booty bass beat down that will appeal to those who likes their electro fast and nasty.

Here the London label dishes out a sixth serving of retro-futurist madness. Highlights naturally come thick and fast throughout. We're particularly impressed by the twisted acid lines and mind-altering psychedelic vibe of The He-Men's "Rolla", the bleep-meets-"Strings of Life" rush of Leeds lad DJPC's "Danger Man", Dawl's stab-happy fusion of electro and early hardcore ("Party Till The A.M") and the "bleep and breaks" rush of Craig Bratley's rumbling EP standout "From The DAT" (which, fittingly, was crafted from old demo recordings he made in the 90s).

Review: In the world of Tone Dropout, the rave never stops. It's this wholehearted 90s-inspired retro-futurism that makes their compilation style EP releases such a good listen. This ninth volume in the series packs a punch, with highlights coming courtesy of The He-Men (the trippy acid-psychedelia of saucer-eyed early morning workout "A-Train"), the weighty Yorkshire bleep and bass-meets-Italian dream house warmth of Ascot and WW's "Marelli Bleeps", and the deliciously quirky hip-house-meets-breakbeat hardcore-meets-acid bustle of Bufo Bufo's "Ectotherm". Arguably best of all though is Dawl's sleazy, alien and off-kilter acid-electro rub "Human Experiments".

Review: For the latest volume in their on-going multi-artist EP series, eccentric London label Tone Dropout has gathered together a fresh batch of cuts from their closest collaborators. To kick things off, the He Men (AKA Oki Noki and Sween) combine the deep space sounds of Detroit techno and mind-altering acid lines of Phuture with the rubbery beats of New York deep house. Dawl opts for brain-melting analogue bass and wild machine bleeps on mutant jack-track "Asylum", while Corporeal Face's "Permo" is probably best described as "hardcore clonk". Eslewhere, you'll find two chunks of Frankie Bones style breakbeat techno heaviness that wouldn't have sounded out of place rushing from the speakers at an early '90s Sunrise rave.

Review: Italian imprint Clut Communications has never been particularly prolific, often going 12 months or more between releases, but the label's output is always on-point and worth checking. Their first outing of 2023 is a double-header, featuring two tracks apiece from acid/bleep/breakbeat revivalist DAWL and industrial and EBM-influenced techno star Stigma. The latter handles side A, first joining the dots between his moody productions, EBM and Brown Album-era Orbital on 'I Will Make You Understand', before wrapping creepy, post synth-pop riffs and moody chords around a hybrid electro/EBM beat on 'Linearsynthwave'. DAWL once again offers up decidedly nostalgic cuts, with the house-tempo, lightly new beat-influenced 'Intence Perception' [sic] being followed by the rave-igniting bass, breaks and synth stabs of 'Riding High'.

Review: Due to popular demand (or the eye-watering prices being charged by online sellers for second-hand copies), the Tone Dropout crew has decided to reissue the label's 2013 debut EP. We should probably thank them, because it remains amongst the imprint's most potent releases. Dawl's two A-side tracks - the early LFO-influenced brilliance of "TRK1" and mind-altering electro box jam "Strange World" - are every bit as potent as they were five years ago, while Sween's trippy "Lab Rat" has probably improved with age. The track's combination of meandering acid lines, snappy machine drums, breathless vocal samples and hooky, early morning stabs is undoubtedly alluring.
