Review: The Berlin-based Mannequin now set their sights on Din A Testbild, early pioneers of the German New Wave music scene founded by Mark Eins and Einsturzende Neubauten's Gudrun Gut: that once called Tangerine Dream's Klaus Schulze a member. The Berlin by way of Rome label have now reissued three of the band's first albums. The amalgamation of punk band Testbild and obscure collective Din A, the musical union first surfaced in the early-'80s via three Programm albums on Schulze's Innovative Communication label before subsiding for nearly a decade. Programm 3 represents a moment of distance from the 'kraut' past of the band. Moving out from the legendary Schulze's studio into a home recording dimension with a basic equipment such as the Roland TR-808, Moog Source, EMS Synthi and tape loops.

Review: We don't know how he's done it, but Mannequin's head honcho has bloody done it again. Din A Testbild were a German synth-wave outfit who came to prominence at the start of the 1980s, but who always remained in the underground sector. In fact, they released three chapters of their infamous Programm series, the fourth of which was rejected by Innovative Communication at the tie, apparently because it was, well, too innovative. This feels like the perfect release for Mannequin, especially seeing as these are the product of original master tapes hand-delivered by Frieder Butzman, one of the outfit's original members. "West/Berlin Tegel Airport" kicks off with a punchy electro baseline and banging drums, all glazed in a coating of punky oddity, while "Cold War" sounds like Detroit electro from the likes of DJ Stingray, except the sounds are even more deranged. "Frontstadt" is another visionary electro experiment, driven by swarms of wild noise, "West/Berlin Underground" shudders its sinister vocals amid gnarly drums and synth glitches, leaving the entirety of the B-side to accommodate the viciously forward-thinking techno of "OST Berlin". You shouldn't really miss out on this if you're serious about your proto-techno.

Review: Interestingly, Din A Testbild's 1981 album, Programm 2, was a big favourite with Italian cosmic disco pioneers Daniel Baldelli and DJ Mozart. Recorded at Klaus Schulze's studio a year after their experimental new wave debut - a seminal release in the story of Berlin's avant-garde scene - it's sound is undeniably more polished and heavily electronic than its' lauded predecessor. While still firmly experimental in outlook, Programm 2 contains some moments of almost overwhelming beauty (see the spellbinding pianos and dreamy synthesizer textures of "Tight Pants" and similarly spaced-out "Harrakiry Mon Amour"), as well as dubbed-out trips into weird electronic territory.

Review: Din A Testbild's 1980 debut full-length, Programm 1, long been considered something of an experimental, post-punk classic by krautrock experts. Here, the album gets a timely reissue on Berlin's Mannequin Records. The set was recorded at Klaus Schulze's studio, and contained contributions from a number of German and American experimental musicians. The album's six tracks are surprisingly varied, and feature nods towards post-punk noise, abstract electronics, dub, beat poetry, wayward krautrock, early Cabaret Voltaure, Stockhausen style tape experiments, and the pitch-black output of Joy Division. Highlights are plentiful, from the bizarre ambience and spoken words of "Age Is A State Of Mind", to the off-kilter punk-funk of opener "Die Siebzige".
