Review: When it was first released on CD earlier in the year, Inspirations caused quite a stir. Now available on wax for the first time, the album sees Los Angeles jazz singer Dwight Trible cover some of the songs and artists that shaped his formative musical years, with a little help from Manchester-based bandleader, arranger and trumpeter Matthew Halsall. Highlights include a rousing, near riotous cover of Nina Simone favourite "Feeling Good", a spiritual, harp-laden rendition of Hal David and Burt Bacharach's "What The World Needs Now is Love" - a radical departure from the original, featuring one of Trible's greatest vocal performances to date - and a poignant, heartfelt version of Leroy Hutson and Donny Hathaway's still relevant "Tryin' Times".

Review: When it was first released on CD, Inspirations caused quite a stir. It was then made available on wax for the first time and soon sold out. Review: Matthew Halsall's Gondwana label is seeing a busy August what with the imprint flooding our jazz charts with reissues and, of course, new releases such as this wonderful collaborative effort from The Gondwana Orchestra and Dwight Trible. Trible's voice is like silk, running up and down the delicate waves of melodies from the collective, with "Colors" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" both capable of making the toughest of audiences feel utterly uplifted. On the flip, "Love Is Everywhere" shines bright amid a flurry of flutes and intricate drum percussions, while "You've Got To Have Freedom" rides off a much smoother, deeper sort of vibe that's got a little funk at its core. Wicked.

Review: An organic, acoustic take on the Dwight Trible cosmic jazz vision. After last year's 'Love Is The Answer' release - Dwight Trible's collaboration with Ammoncontact's Carlos Nino and the young beatmakers of Los Angeles - Ninja Tune brings you the organic, acoustic take on the singer's cosmic jazz vision. Originally released in 2004 in the USA, 'Living Water' finds the singer-musician-storyteller at the peak of his powers, displaying a virtuosity gained from a lifetime of refining complex techniques with the same dedication as dear-departed masters John Coltrane and Horace Tapscott, both major influences on Trible. The bold humanitarian stance of those legends frames the repertoire of 'Living Water', that includes Trible originals like the heart-stopping acapella 'Peace', as well as new takes on jazz staples such as Andy Bey's 'Celestial Blues' and Wayne Shorter's 'Footprints'. Pianist John Rangel, drummer Daniel Bejerano and bassist Trevor Ware are Trible's core band but the sound canvas is further enriched by guests like percussion maestros Munyungo Jackson and Derf Reklaw, flautist Joshua Spiegelman and poets Kamau Daaood and Blay Ambolley. Above all it is Trible who stands tall on the record. The depth of emotion as well as the technical brilliance of his voice places him in an illustrious lineage of singers that includes Andy Bey and the late, great Leon Thomas. Trible has also drawn greatly from one of his (and Thomas') trusty collaborators, Pharoah Sanders. The iconic saxophonist, living embodiment of the Coltranian spirit that is dear to Trible's heart, has provided an instructive template for the singer for many years. Sanders' ability to centre and focus his tone with laser-like precision is reflected in the quality of Trible's delivery. The purity of his timbre is remarkable. 'Living Water' is the sound of an artist in his prime, a man at peace with himself seeking peace for his fellow man.
