I'm Starting To Feel Okay Vol 7 Part 2
Cat: MM 199. Rel: 22 Mar 16

Deep House
DJ Jenifa - "Dresscode" (5:17)
Johannes Klingebiel - "Cowbell Piano House" (6:57)
Fred P - "Days In Time" (6:26)
Kim Brown - "Gated Communities" (6:06)
Review: You'll struggle to find a more pleasingly tongue-in-cheek house track than DJ Jenifa's "Dresscode", the opening cut from this 12" sampler for Mule Musiq's I'm Starting To Feel Okay Volume 7 compilation. Produced by Gold Panda, it peppers a woozy, Germanic deep house groove with scattergun drum machine hits, a lazy trumpet solo and cut-up samples of someone talking about going clubbing Chelmsford on a Saturday night. Elsewhere, Johannes Klingebiel delivers a dash of wonky jazz-house in the shape of the rather tasty "Cowbell Piano House", Fred P goes typically deep and spacey on the Motor City lusciousness that is "Days In Time", and Kim Brown goes even deeper with the dusty, analogue-sounding warmth of "Gated Communities".

TBK - "Ed In Da House"
DJ Qu - "Movements"
Review: Is Jus-Ed the hardest-working man in house? Certainly, he seems to be making a strong case. Following numerous mix CDs, singles and doublepack vinyl EPs in 2011, he begins 2012 with a typically impressive collection of soft-focus deep house with a rugged, floor-friendly edge. As ever, there's a high musical content (see the haunting acid bass and twinkling pianos of "Confused Passion"), alongside rougher cuts that explore the darker recesses of early morning deep house. Take, for example, the dreamy synths and ice-cold acid of "Trip To Hamburg" or liquid atmospherics of "Mr Pete's Cribby". Like the rest of Endurance, they're inspirationally melodic without losing dancefloor focus.

Review: It's that time of year again. 12 months on from his last album-length outing as FP-Oner, Fred P once again dons the alias for 7, a third numerically titled set in as many years. As usual, the music is rarely less than immaculate, with the imaginative and talented producer showcasing most sides of his musical personality. Highlights come thick and fast, from the yearning, soft focus melodiousness of quietly jazzy deep house opener "Smiles" and shimmering Motor City techno futurism of "Travelling Zones", to the blissful house minimalism of "Simple Things" and acid-flecked late night hypnotism of closer "Arigato". Superior electronic club music composed by a master: what more do you need?

Review: The last time we heard Fred P under his FP-Oner guise was for an album, the minimally named 5, which came out on Japan's powerful Mule Musiq stable. As such, FP-Oner returns with 6 for the same label, carrying a similar load of molecular deep house music coated in a distinctive sci-fi kinda feel. This is what Fred P does best; that is, constructing intricate patterns of sound and giving them a shape through house. In other words, each of these eight tunes tell a much more interesting story than the dancefloor and, instead, they force the listener to enter a world of its own, guided by airy, mystical synths and plenty of electronic manipulation. Excellent, as always, Mr P.

States Of Bliss Part 2
Cat: PS 0072. Rel: 30 Jan 23

Deep House
NY (2:33)
Awakening Desire (7:06)
High Fusion (extended mix) (8:05)
Review: Berlin-based but American-born producer Fred P is as deep as they come. Private Society has been his latest label concern for a while now and this State of Bliss series kicked off in November last year in fine fashion. Part 2 is another of his smooth signature blends of jazz, ambient and house. 'NY' has shimmering chords and a percussive clatter that eventually clears to reveal a skittish broken beat that is live and lush. 'Awakening Desire' then cuts loose on expansive ambient pads, with worlds vocals smeared across a wide open night sky in suggestive jazz drumming drifts way down low. It's an experimental piece before the funky jazz dancer 'High Fusion' gets you on your toes with a killer bass guitar line.

Forward Motion Equals Progression EP
Forward Motion Equals Progression EP (translucent green vinyl 12")
Cat: SYNCRO 3712. Rel: 23 Dec 22

Deep House
Foward (12:26)
Motion (5:43)
Equals Progression (6:22)
Review: Fred P has just served up the album of his career but that doesn't stop the scene's deepest operator from also coming up with this superb new EP on Cyber. It comes on a nice translucent green 12" and kicks off with 'Forward.' This one rolls on cuddly drums and has rickety percussive lines all overloaded with Fred's signature spiritual synths. 'Motion' is a little more driving but no less cavernous and inviting with its balmy and heady pads and then comes the life-affirming 'Equals Progression', a groove that sways to and fro with silvery drums and yet more astral melodies.

Profound Science
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has light surface marks/scratches, otherwise in excellent working condition***

Master of the (ultra) deep house cut Fred P launched the Private Society imprint - a limited-edition, hand-stamped, blink-and-you-miss-it affair - in Spring 2021. The label's first two releases sold out, and we expect the same to happen with this third instalment. There's much to admire, as you'd expect, with 'Music for the People' - a driving but undulating chunk of peak-time deep house goodness rich in echoing additional percussion hits, mazy jazz-funk synth solos, warming bass guitar and dreamy chords - leading the way. Other highlights include 'Good Vibration', a more intergalactic but no less energetic affair, and the soul-soaked broken house wonder that is closing cut 'Profound Science'. A master at work, doing what he does best.

Review: The next release on Shall Not Fade comes from none other than deep house legend, Fred P. Also renowned for his musical offerings as Black Jazz Consortium, the New York-bred, Berlin-based producer is accredited with over 100 releases, all instantly recognisable given their warmth, depth and modesty. The new 'Out All Night' EP tops up the roster, and is replete with shaky synth tremblings, underwater movements, and broken clap-drum assortments.

Review: New York house don Fred P is back after serving up some sumptuous album sounds under his Black Jazz Consortium alias. This time he has both feet firmly in the club, rooted to the floor, and his head is lost in the groove. As ever these are chunky, hypnotic affairs with real bass weight and just enough detail to keep your mind occupied as you travel ever further down the rabbit hole. There's glitchiness in "For The Dome" and soul in "Construction", while "Alphabet City" is a real bumper and "Turn Up" brings the darkness. High quality stuff, as always.

Reaching For The Stars (8:44)
Moonlight (3:44)
Riverside Drive (4:33)
New Ways (4:48)
Review: Hot on the heels of the "Lush Culture" EP with Deetron that landed on Perpetual earlier this summer, more lush licks come from Mr Fred P aka Black Jazz Consortium. Four soul hurricanes that range in weight and emotion, the two poles here can be found slap-bang in the middle of the EP: "Moonlight" is a sultry brushed-drum break for lovers while "Riverside Drive" jacks like a rhino but soothes you with big breeze feels. Elsewhere "Reaching For The Stars" cruises on a skippy break with airy early 90s New York pads and "New Ways" closes on a stunning 88 tip. Have nice dreams y'all.

Wave Patterns (10:24)
Continuous Sensations (7:05)
Unbroken Circle (6:44)
Review: After over 26 years at the forefront of Parisian nightlife, Rex Club expanded their remit in 2015 with the launch of an eponymous record label; typically, it was inaugurated with a dash of Gallic flair by a 12" sporting the collective talents of D'Julz, Phil Weeks and Trus'Me (the latter on remix duties). Fast forward to 2016 and Rex Club present their second 12", turning to one of the most respected names in deep house, Mr Fred P. Last year was perhaps the most productive so far for Fred P, and this creative drive continues apace on this Expressing Dark Matter EP. Holding it down on the A-side is "Wave Patterns" where a restrained groove plays second fiddle to some delightful pads and oh so deep chord work. The B-side pairs up the loose percussive "Continuous Sensations" with standout cut "Unbroken Circle". Vintage Peterkin through and through.

Dream World (7:08)
Slow Euphoria (7:06)
Spinning High (8:43)
Acid 20/20 (6:36)
Review: Rawax's Aira Series, in which esteemed producers are asked to create a spate of new tracks specifically using Roland's Aira-branded hardware, has previously delivered impressive outings from Ricardo Villalobos and Ron Trent. Here, it's the turn of Fred P to showcase the "new, but sounds old" possibilities of Roland's production kit. Three of the four tracks are heavily influenced by the twisted, intoxicating world of acid house, with "Dream World" - arguably the pick - also containing some deliciously starry and far-sighted synthesizer motifs. The slow-acid wonkiness of "Slow Euphoria" is potent, too - think Timothy J Fairplay goes to Detroit - while "Common Ground" is a deep, melodious, dub-influenced, intergalactic delight.

Using Machines
Review: ** REPRESS ** There's been plenty of sightings of Fred P in more techno-led realms of late, but this EP for Mule Musiq reveals some interesting new shades to his production style. "Distant Rain" heads in with a distinct line in grainy, piercing arpeggios well out of the usual soulful haze Fred weaves around his music. There's a Detroit weight to the more rhythmic chords in the track, but really that cosmic techno synth steals the show. "Using Machines" on the other hand is a low slung jazz affair with lightly brushed drums and a gorgeous spread of horns, piano guitar locked into a carefree, summer breeze of a tune.

State Of No State
Review: Founded last year, Anthony Parasole's label The Corner has seemingly not been content with sticking to one style thus far, covering deep house from DJ Qu, hip-hop from Nor'Easter, and techno from Parasole himself, Phil Moffa and a recent industrial turn from Shawn O'Sullivan. This latest releases sees the label return to the deeper echelons of the East Coast underground with the BQE EP from the man Fred P which fits in with The Corner ethos by covering a variety of styles. Opening track "Splitting Particles" is the most surprising cut here, running through robust, hi-resolution techno of the Ostgut Ton variety, though the improvised keys of "Tube Compression", hypnotic backdrop of "Storm Clouds" and mid-tempo bounce of "State Of No State" will please dedicated fans of Peterkin's style.

Black Magic
Review: The man otherwise known as Black Jazz Consortium gives us two particularly brooding house cuts on the always excellent Mule Electronic label. Despite the common depth running through both, the single is definitely one of two halves, with wildly different moods being displayed on each side. Despite its dark sub-bass, A-side "Soul Music" is the brighter of the two, using an introspective chord refrain with a number of spoken word samples that compete for position within the mix. Flipside "Black Magic" is moodier track still, taking the same low frequencies but creating the mood out of the churning bassline, whilst melody is foregone for a single organ chord that hangs suspensefully in the air, whilst somewhere beneath the murk you can almost hear a twisted human voice struggling to get out.

Review: The inimitable Fred Peterkin presents yet more incredible adventures on his newly inaugurated Perpetual Sound imprint. Following up the incredible EP from Black Jazz Consortium back in December, this sophomore effort sees the head honcho co-present some fine tracks with veteran Swiss producer Sam Geiser aka Deetron via the Lush Culture EP. It's all about Captain P on the A side, featuring the deep and moody tribal entrancement of "Liquidity" followed by the soulful title track - which features his trademark use of emotive synth sounds and immaculately programmed rhythms. On the flip, Deetron goes well deep and smooth on his offering "Sweet Science" which sees him deliver hi-tech soul in his usual idiosyncratic style before P returns to conclude the release with the retro-futurist, ambient "119 Black Key Experiment".

Review: Volcov steers the good ship Neroli towards more of that immaculately curated deep gear you know they do so well. The Inside series reaches part three with another heavyweight cast, leading in with the mighty Fred P on the crisp rhythms and considered chord movements of 'Time Well Spent'. Rest Symbol follows up with a powerful strain of synth orchestration which adds a moody intensity to the record, while Resonating creates a raw, seductive beatdown on 'J707' that will satisfy any discerning outboard house fiend. Patrice Scott then seals the deal with a submerged 'Beat Version' of an untitled track that course through snaking rhythms at a slower tempo perfect for some backroom scene setting or creative warm-up blending.

JC - "General Relativity"
JC - "Framework"
FP - "Quantum Effects"
FP - "String Theory"
Review: Commencing a new series for Fred P's Soul People imprint, Jose Cabrera and Fred himself deliver four tracks of uncharacteristically tough rhythms that suggest an exploration of more driving, DJ-focused cuts compared to the luscious soulful tones normally found on the label. Cabrera takes up the A side, kicking off with the hefty throwdown of "General Relativity", all thunderous kick, snagging hat and desolate bleep over a fearsome high-pitched tone. "Framework" is housier in its demeanour, but still packs a mean punch as it twists out a chunky chord line. Fred P's "Quantum Effects" on the flip is a perfectly scattered techno excursion, both minimal and engaging at the same time. "String Theory" is more twitchy with its dextrous layers of percussion and discordant notes claging around in the distance, a far cry from the soothing lullabies he can often be found crafting.

Move D - "Rise" (7:37)
Fred P - "Lush Life" (5:38)
Christopher Rau - "Unclear Joint" (6:08)
Easy To Remember - "I Don't Know" (5:15)
Review: Two years on from volume one, Unclear has decided to deliver a second 12" tribute to the sadly missed Klang Club, a techno and house institution that brought ravers to the sleepy Tuscan village of Arezzo between 2008 and 2013. Move D kicks things off with the minor key melodies, creepy chords and crunchy percussion of "Rise", before Fred P effortlessly fuses deep house and wigglin' acid on the standout "Lush Life". On the flip, Christopher Rau gets busy with the thunderous techno drums, sampled sax loops and tumbling chords of "Unclear Joint", before Easy To Remember rounds things off with the early Chicago house grooves and Damn Funk style synth solos of "I Don't Know".
