Review: Ground is the collaborative project of two Austrian musicians : Christoph Pajer and Oliver Stotz, and sets the two members guitar playing in amongst a bed of electronics and chopped samples. Probably the most experimental album on the Radian-curated Karate Joe label, "Lift" manages to be totally obtuse at times and then at others entirely straightforward and listenable. One moment drifting into crunching concrete sounds and mangled vocal samples, then the next you'll here fingerpicked guitar and sung vocals. It's a strange mix carried off with ease. Very occasionally the more arty segments of the album can grate, but when the band get it right (Steve Reich meets Delia Derbyshire squelch of "Klagit" for example) the results are explosive.

Review: Publicity-shy Japanese producer Ground first came to our attention earlier in the year thanks to the kosmiche-goes-deep techno hypnotism of debut single "Logos". Here, the Osaka-raised artist unveils a debut album that expands on that thrilling first missive, variously joining the dots between melodious, off-kilter lo-fi techno, attractive experimental deep house, hard-to-pigeonhole high-tempo ethno-techno workouts (see the bonkers but brilliant "Hanasai"), low-slung dancefloor weirdness ('Feel It", the insane jazz cut-up "Koot Works") and drowsy, sunrise-friendly brilliance (album highlight "Sunizm"). It's a curious set, all told, but one that wholeheartedly impresses from start to finish, with Ground supplying enough curious touches and aural textures to suggest that repeat listening is essential.
