Review: Last year saw the passing of two monumental figures in rock history, legendary drummer Jaki Liebezeit and bassist Holger Czukay, the unrivalled rhythm section of influential krautrock group Can. Following Czukay's death, Gronland Records offer 'Cinema', a five LP posthumous retrospective that spans fifty years of his recording career. Numerous tributes have cited Czukay as a crucial cult figure, famed for collaborations with artists in a broad field; David Sylvian, Jah Wobble, Brian Eno and Karlheinz Stockhausen are to name but a few. This compilation covers such a broad catalogue of released and unreleased material - his most popular being from the iconic 1979 record 'Movies' - that it's essential listening for Czukay and Can lovers alike, as well as a fine introduction to the man's body of work. Review: Despite the break-up of Can, nothing was going to stop Holger Czukay pursuing his strange and restless muse, and his work in the '80s is marked out by featuring just as much vibrant experimentation and playful spirit as anything he'd created thus far. Taking a plethora of influences on board from rock, jazz, dub. European folk music and elsewhere, and blending them with tape loops, samples and absurdist collages, he created two albums chock full of the kind of magpie spirit that ensured his place in the avant-garde hall of fame. Particularly striking is the fact that thirty-odd years on, these records stubbornly refuse to date, beamed in from a mindset still streets ahead of the competition.

Like previous instalments from Claremont 56, Can completists will relish this 12", with the A Side dedicated to a brand new version of "A Perfect World". Notable at the time for a strange proto rap delivery from vocalist Sheldon Ancel, this new version presents the track as tingling flamenco flecked kraut rock. Face down the label presents a breathy version of "Photosong" recorded live at Czukay's performance at the Short Circuit festival at London venue The Roundhouse and the original frenetic recording of "Hit Hit Flop Flop".

Review: Claremont 56 continue their mission to release unheard Holger Czukay rarities to the world with this two track EP, recorded between 1978 and 1984, during the period when CAN were utilising the Innerspace Studio in Cologne less frequently, but Czukay and drummer Jaki Liebezeit continued to experiment together. These tracks were largely created using recordings from an old dictaphone, looped and tinkered with by Czukay. As a consequence these tracks are as weightless as the EP's title suggests, with the avan-garde rhythms of "In Space" and broken guitar melodies of "Secret Life" both providing some particularly haunting moments. As with Claremont 56's previous Czukay release, the sleeve is hand numbered, and the record comes on beautiful white vinyl.

Review: This 12", containing two unreleased tracks from Can co-founder Holger Czukay, is a typically gorgeous effort from Claremont 56, replete with gold embossed sleeve, and full liner notes on these two 30 year old gems. On the A-Side is "Music is a Miracle", an 18 minute musical lecture, in which Czukay talks the listener through selected examples of sounds from several tracks contained on his 1981 album On the Way to the Peak of Normal, the first he wrote solo following the break-up of Can. On the B-Side is "Ode to Perfume Part 2", a companion piece to the opener to that album, a leisurely guitar jam with elements of French horn that would be considered positively Balearic by most quarters today. But it's the extensive vocoder use, which, together with the spectral organ sounds, add a particularly haunting element to the track's proceedings. A must for Czukay collectors and Can fans alike.

Review: Claremont 56 deliver another stunningly presented 12' pressed up on muddy gold which holds two versions of Holger Czukay's "My Persian Love". This brilliant journey into kaleidoscopic cosmiche psychedelia was the Can legend's first composition after leaving the band and it's complemented by an equally spellbinding 2010 update.

Review: Claremont 56's main man Mudd gets busy with two remixes of Holger Czukay and U She's "La Premiere", getting nice and slow to worm a lazy kind of shuffle into the original track from all-round Krautrock legend Czukay. The "Ode To Phreek" remix is a loungey track that hops along with quite a spring in its groove, as muted guitar strikes drive everything along behind U She's mournful tone. The "Garden" mix does slip a more prominent kick into the mix whilst subtly dubbing out certain elements in a coolly executed celebration of eclecticism.
