Review: Los Angeleno in Berlin Steve Huerta returns to homeboy Urulu's Amadeus imprint for the first time since 2016's Apache Line EP. Still very much a deep house producer, he's truly reached a new level with his sound on the new Amaso EP. From the emotive, neon-lit vibe of the enchanting title track, the lush rolling breaks of "Fake Leather Whatever" to the full throttle retro techno vibe of "Don't Be Gentle, It's A Rental" which is quite reminiscent of his other great efforts on Slow Life or Oscillat recently.

Lounge Lizard (12" + sticker)
Cat: SL 018. Rel: 05 Dec 18
Deep House
  1. Huerta & S Moreira - "Metafiction" (7:34)
  2. Loose Thread (6:43)
  3. Lounge Lizard (6:38)
  4. Pale Fire (6:31)
Review: Berlin via Los Angeles' Steve Huerta first made a name for himself on labels such as Amadeus (run by fellow Californian Urulu) and Retrofit - usually in collaboration with homeboy Yooj - who is known these days as Gene On Earth. Like the latter, Huerta has reinvented his sound with appearances on In Dust We Trust, Oscillat, and now with this terrific new four tracker for Berlin based retroverts Slow Life. From the hypnotic old-school swing of "Metafiction" with S Moreira, the sun-kissed broken beat of "Loose Thread" (calling to mind classic Atjazz) to the woozy and minimal "Pale Fire", this single perfectly fits the label's open end parties aboard the Hoppetosse.

SMALLHOURS 001 (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: SMALLHOURS 001. Rel: 30 Jan 19
Deep House
  1. Youandewan & Huerta - "Who R U" (5:47)
  2. Sugar Free - "No Samba" (5:38)
  3. Junes - "Park & Ride" (6:18)
  4. Gene On Earth - "Dr Drago" (6:00)
Review: Berlin based Brit Ewan Smith aka Youandewan follows up the inauguration of his first imprint The Brane with his second imprint called Small Hours. The inaugural release here is a great snapshot of Berlin's sound of now, with these fellow expats from both sides of the Atlantic giving their take on new wave retro-techno - formerly of a deep house state of mind. Smith teams up with Los Angeleno Steve Huerta, who is fresh off a great release on Slow Life on the spacey minimal funk of "Who R U", Galdoors main man Junes comes off sounding far less arcane than usual on the quirky blip, blurp and bleep of "Park & Ride" and Gene On Earth gets even more out there on the all analogue IDM madness of "Dr Drago".
