Review: Over the last few years, Jimi Tenor seems to have settled into a new role as an elder statesman of left-of-centre Finnish jazz. He's also taken to composing music for film, as with the four cuts on this extended-play seven-inch. They're all featured on Kati Juruus's recent movie Cinema Dadaab, which focuses on the escapism films provide for the inhabitants of a refugee camp. Echoes of the setting and storyline can be heard across Tenor's compositions, which variously mix and match elements of jazz-funk, Blaxploitation-era soundtracks, the polyrhythms of Africa, the intoxicating instrumentation of the Middle East and the Finnish musician's own eccentric musical vision.

Review: Finnish lounge lizard-turned-jazzman Jimi Tenor first joined forces with legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen for a joint album on Strut in 2009. In January 2016, they reunited for two nights of performance at Cafe Oto in London, making use of a range of prototype and experimental analogue synthesizers loaned by the Moog Sound Lab. It must have been a terrific couple of days, because the live recordings showcased here are superb. As you'd expect, Allen's distinctive drumming provides the backbone, while Tenor variously delivers mazy Moog synth solos, trippy electronics, bittersweet lounge vocals (reminiscent of his late '90s albums on Warp) and occasional flute and sax solos. The results are decidedly intergalactic and out-there: wayward Afro-jazz for analogue astronauts.

Review: Finnish Jazz legend Jimi Tenor returns with his muse Nicole Willis and a bit of help from New York's Jonathan Maron on "Big Fantasy (For Me)" a lo-slung and funky soul jam that's delivered in a stylistic presentation that you'd always expect from these legends. On the flip "Tear It Down" goes for some more uptempo disco flavour with Willis' powerful vocals supported by a sexy, psychedelic and uplifting arrangement by Tenor and Maron's sleek guitar licks which earned him respect from his days in NYC acid jaxx band Groove Collective.
