Review: Over the years, Lack of Afro producer Adrian Gibbons has proved adept at knocking out both shamelessly upbeat party fodder and carefully crafted songs laden with raw emotion. This third album - his second for Freestyle - gives ample weight to both, presenting a pleasing mix of scratchy soul (check the Northern Soul revivalism of "Fool" and "What The Hell"), horn-heavy Afrobeat, piano-laden anthems ("Holding My Breath"), Aim-ish hip-hop instrumentals and balls-out funk breaks messiness (the suitably fat "P.A.R.T.Y"). That it remains entertaining and highly polished throughout reflects Gibbons' growing skill as a producer. Basically, he's really nailed it This Time.

This funky young dude has been making music since the age of 7 and now, at 26, Adam Gibbons has all but earned an honorary afro with the release of his debut album, "Press On".

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Lack of Afro, AKA veteran funk, soul and hip-hop producer Adam Gibbons. This fourth studio album for regular home Freestyle Records is being pitched as his most eclectic yet. Certainly, there's plenty of variety in the textures, styles and tempos, from the disco-funk stomp of Herbal T hook-up "Brown Sugar" and sweet Northern Soul blast of "The Contender" (all fuzzy guitars and pleasing horns), to the soft soul shuffle of "Making It Right" and Breakestra-ish hip-hop funk of "Here We Go Again". Despite the variety, Gibbons is still at his best when really cutting loose, as the superb opener "Freedom" adeptly demonstrates.

Review: Lack Of Afro (aka Adam Gibbons), returns once more with a hard hitting slice of dancefloor magic. His debut single "Wait A Minute" turned heads around the globe with a wide array of DJ's charting it as well as picking up plays on Radio 1. In a similar vein, but this time taking it's cues from Latin funk, "Roderigo" is a stomping, horn led dancefloor monster - once again illustrating the unique production style of this young producer and giving another indication of what's to come.

Review: Neo soul evangelist Adam Gibbons - aka Lack Of Afro - is back with the euphoric, cathartic release of "Freedom", a retro jam that totally evokes the hazy Easy Rider age of American funk rock, featuring the talents of Jack Tyson-Charles. "Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances" meanwhile is a riot of Blow Up-era Swinging Sixties vintage funk - both cuts are highly recommended.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Wait A Minute
  2. Wait A Minute (Kraak & Smaak remix)
Review: Based in Exeter, Adam Gibbons is a talented multi-instrumentalist raised and fed on nothing but the finest funk. Having played saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, keys and drums in a plethora of bands throughout the years, this is his debut solo outing under the Lack Of Afro moniker. Reminiscent of the raw and heavy funk style of The Quantic Soul Orchestra and The New Mastersounds, "Wait A Minute" is a break led monster of epic proportions with nearly all instrumentation (save a few samples) handled by the young producer. Although retro in inspiration, like his contempories Adam brings the funk sound up to date without sounding too polished or synthetic and of course with an eye firmly fixed on the dancefloor! Keeping things up to date, we asked nu-funk fiddlers Kraak & Smaak (It means nice and tasty in Dutch to set the record straight!) to rework the track in their own style. Beefing up the beats and taking elements from the original master tapes, they push the track in a more straight up clubbier direction, with enough drops and builds to please DJs all over the musical spectrum. With 2 more Lack Of Afro tracks already in the can (including a fresh Natural Self remix) as well as an album in the pipeline, there's no telling how far the West Country's boy wonder will go.

  1. Take You Home (feat Joss Stone) (3:42)
  2. Fires Glow (feat Emma Noble) (3:47)
Review: You might say that Adam Gibbons is a fairly regular name, and you'd be right. This particular A.Gibbons has another side to him, though, one where he makes all sorts of crazy tunes under the moniker Lack Of Afro. Since the mid 00s, he's been releasing may variations of funk, soul and disco; the man is never afraid of a e new challenge and loves the vintage sounds of the 60s and 70s. This new two-tracker on the party-ready LOA is magnificent in its entirety; "Take You Home" is a lovely, soul-tastic pop tune guided by the imposing voice of Joss Stone, while Emma Noble delivers a deeper, more laid-back sort of wisdom on Gibbons' "Fires Glow". Lovely stuff.

Here, you have twelve scorching slices of upbeat lament, and from "Hello Baby" - a masterful stroke of sunny funk - to "Now I Feel Good", the artist manages to bring back the spirit of the 1970's into a new and contemporary light. Gliding piano keys, powerful vocals, and a kick-ass production surely make Lack Of Afro one of the kings of modern soul.

Review: Two highly contrasting soul cuts from Lack Of Afro's forthcoming fifth studio album Hello Baby. "I Got The Rhythm" is a firing workout that taps deep into mid '60s Motown, all sweaty and slightly rough around the edges yet still tighter than a banker's hedge fund. "All My Love" is a much silkier, string-based session that taps more into the late 70s pop style of soul with delicious vocals from London soulstress and previous LOA collaborator Juliette Ashby. A great introduction to the album.
