  1. You Made Me A Believer (3:56)
  2. Starting Over (4:36)
Review: It would be fair to say that the two tracks showcased here aren't among Lamont Dozier's best-known songs. For starters, they were originally tucked away on the legendary soul man's largely overlooked 1981 set, Working On You. A-side "I'm A Believer" is a breezy, string-drenched chunk of disco-boogie blessed with one of the singer-songwriter's best vocal performances. It's something of an overlooked dancefloor gem, all told. Flipside "Starting Over" builds steadily from a slow start, with Dozier's impassioned message of love reborn coming through loud and clear over sumptuous orchestration and super-sweet vocal harmonies.

  1. Going Back To My Roots (9:44)
  2. Going Back To My Roots (Danny Krivit Chant edit) (5:37)
Review: While the later Richie Havens and Odyssey covers were far more commercially successful, you can't beat Lamont Dozier's original 1977 version of "Going Back To My Roots" - a near ten-minute workout that starts as a disco-soul stomper, ends as a chant-along Afro-funk stepper, and was arranged by none other than South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela. Dozier's impeccable take takes pride of place on side A of this Groovin' Records reissue, with a fresh re-edit by Danny Krivit - who previously tweaked the Richie Havens version - on the flip. Brilliantly, Krivit ignores much of the song, instead extending and rearranging the sweaty, tropical end section of Dozier's original mix into an inspired track of its own.

Review: As one of the 20th century's most successful songwriters - both as a solo composer and as part of Motown's legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland team - Lamont Dozier has penned some serious hits over the years. On Reimagination he offers us a neat reminder of the quality of his catalogue, laying down sparse and occasionally wildly different covers of his greatest songs, often accompanied by famous friends and guest artists. Highlights include a bluesy version of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" with Gregory Porter, a slo-mo gospel take on "Reach Out, I'll Be There" featuring Jo Harman, and a thrilling medley of "(Love Is Like A) Heatwave" and "Nowhere To Run" full of fizzing horns, fill-tastic jazz drums and boogie-woogie piano.
