Searching (5:48)
Moon (6:40)
Wild For The Night (4:16)
Love Ya (5:40)
Need Nobody (4:44)
It Ain’t The Same (5:06)
Review: On the second part of his simultaneously released Something To Show You EP series, Nick Lapien moves further towards late night techno territory. This is evident from the very start, with opener "Searching" delivering the perfect blend of layered, undulating rhythms, spacey riffs, and hypnotic, early morning atmospherics. It's there, too, on the cascading deep house synths and freshly baked grooves of "Moon", and "Wild For The Night", whose bold analogue bassline and yearning vocal samples propel the tracks forwards. Lapien heads for deeper territory on the flipside, with the sinewy pianos and locked-in rhythm of soul-flecked closer "It Ain't The Same" providing the headline attraction.

Something To Tell You EP
Cat: MR 08. Rel: 25 Jul 16

Deep House
Something To Tell You (8:23)
Loved Him So (5:28)
No Good (7:13)
In The Dark (6:06)
Review: Following a brief hiatus, DVS1's Mistress Recordings label returns with its' first release of 2016. Something To Show You is an expansive, two-part E.P fron Nick Lapien, the Dutch producer who has previously impressed with solo 12" singles under his surname on Bliq and Finale Sessions, along with work as Metropolis and part of Artefakt. There's much to enjoy on this first part, which sees Lapien deliver trippy, late night workouts that sit somewhere between ultra-deep house and Detroit techno. It's an atmospheric formula that works wonderfully, particularly on "Something To Tell You" - where bluesy vocal samples weave their way around a deep, locked-in groove - and the up-tempo bump of tech-house hustler "No Good".

Be Here EP
Cat: SPMB 007. Rel: 23 Mar 15

Deep House
New York (11:31)
On My Mind (feat Giselle) (7:34)
Be Here (feat Giselle) (6:01)
Review: Dutch artists Lapien has taken a careful and considered approach to releasing music so far, with Photic Fields and Bliq amongst the few labels to have been graced with his considered productions. On the Be Here EP, it makes total sense that he should be residing on Soul People Music as the ethereal magic of label boss Fred P hangs heavy in the spirit of each track. This is no imitation effort though, as Lapien brings his own approach not least on the immersive vocal tracks with Giselle, where gritty deep techno rhythmic constructions meet with metallic swathes of melody in a dubby backdrop as warm as it is adventurous. Giselle's vocals cut briskly through the haze and create a very immediate impact making this the kind of record you'll reach for time and time again.

Marchland EP
Cat: PF 06. Rel: 18 Jun 14

Deep House
Lapien - "Ballad Of A Man"
Lapien - "Bobby Konders"
Metropolis - "Black Motor Boogie"
Metropolis - "The Gatekeeper"
Review: Dutch producer Nick Lapien has developed quite a sound over the course of just a few releases with Bliq, Sequencias and Photic Fields; whether it's as Lapien or Metropolis, there is always a smoky, cinematic quality to his output that borrows elements from Chicago house or Detroit techno but always presents them within his own sonic framework. The Marchland EP sees Lapien add local concern Photic Fields to his collection and presents both of his production approaches. There's plenty to enjoy with both sides here too, be it the looseness of percussion and the thickness of harmony that present a nice contrast in the opening Lapien production "Ballad of a Man" or the abstracted, curvaceous 303 manoeuvres of Metropolis closer "The Gatekeeper".
