Efdemin - "Bergwein"
Lawrence - "Unserious Takeout No 1"
Michaela Meise/Sergej Jensen - "Secret Side"
Review: Long before releasing Efdemin's "Bergwein" it seemed to be a little underground hit, featured on the groove100 CD mixed by Lawrence and a part of the sets faves of DJs like Shinedoe, Sascha Funke, Carsten Jost and many more. A piece of minimal primetime deepness, filled with Detroit strings and the most hypnotic bassline ever. Lawrence's unserious takeout shows his unstraight infantile side, inspired by Bell 'N' Bass boosting Rephlex madness. Jubilee Dial 30 ends up with a super low nice cover version taken from the new 'Neu' CD by Michaela Meise and Sergej Jensen.

Review: Veteran German producer Peter M. Kersten dons the Lawrence alias once again for his twelfth long-player, following some fine self-released efforts and of course 2021's wonderful Birds On The Playground for Mule Musiq. Whether it's the armchair melancholia of 'Blue Moon' or the quirky microhouse of 'Jacob's Ladder', through to mesmerising downbeat journeys like 'Epiphany' or the late night mood music of 'Hamburg' (an ode to his beloved hometown) - Epiphany sees the Dial co-head cover a wide selection of moods and grooves and the many shades of deep house music, all in his inimitable and understated style throughout.

Meadows (Sunrise edit) (3:44)
Review: 22 years after his debut EP, micro-house classic Sporturlaub, hit stores, Dial Records co-founder Lawrence is still at the peak of his powers. That's certainly the conclusion we've reached having listened to Birds on the Dancefloor, a fine four-tracker for Mule Musiq full of evocative, melodious, atmospheric and morning-fresh deep house jams. Our pick of a very strong bunch is the ultra-deep, drifting, dubbed-out dancefloor drift of 'Everglade', though opener 'Highland Spores (House Mix)' - a heady and hypnotic fusion of micro-house and deep house - pushes it close. Elsewhere, 'The Awakening' sees the German pepper an undulating acid bassline and smooth beats with rising and falling melodies, while 'Meadows (sunrise edit)' is an intensely beautiful fusion of IDM electronics and soft-focus deep house grooves

Review: Dial Recordings co-head Peter Kersten, aka Lawrence, is no stranger to Mule Musiq. Birds On The Playground is in fact his 14th release for the label. Kersten wrote nine arrangements specifically for Toshiya Kawasaki's recently unveiled Studio Mule, an audiophile listening bar in Shibuya, Tokyo where the Hamburg native is said to have been 'slightly drunk' while enjoying the music. He wanted to bring this feeling of being 'tipsy' across in the album itself, composed on both acoustic and electronic instruments with the addition of field recordings captured in Berlin's Tiergarten. The result is a collection of contemplative downbeat journeys incorporating jazz, cosmic, ambient and japanese folk influences to wonderful effect.

Clouds & Arrows (Roman Flugel remix) (7:52)
Simmer (Lake People remix) (6:03)
Illuminated (Kettenkarussell Yin Mirror) (8:08)
Review: On this EP, Mule Musiq has gathered together a crack team of artists to rework tracks from Lawrence's most recent album, the fine Yoyogi Park. Kettenkarussell serve up two fine reworks of "Illuminated", first heading into deep space, atmospheric techno territory before breaking up the beats on their dreamier, more fragile Yin Mirror version. The headline attraction is arguably Roman Flugel's rework of "Clouds and Arrows", which wraps sparkling synthesizer melodies and cascading piano lines over a bouncy tech-house groove. Arguably best of all, though, is Lake People's version of "Simmer", which fixes bouncy, old school house pianos to a sparkling electro groove.

King Quail
Review: Ever a powerhouse of quality, mood-enhancing electronic music of a 4/4 persuasion, Lawrence returns to his regular stomping ground Mule Musiq for another delectable EP of subliminal sounds for deep questing spinners and sofa jockeys alike. "Blue Mountain" is a shimmering triumph of cascading synths and poised drums, unfurling the component parts with poise while always marching forwards. "Simmer" takes you on a haunting diversion into reflective electro for laying your head down to, while "The Cave" creates a more mischievous kind of fairy tale that makes for one of the pinnacles of the record. "King Quail" then smooths things out with a more steady ticking kind of house jam, albeit shot through with the same misty melodic refinement that we would always expect from Lawrence.

Review: Having flirted with Mule across his last two album length excursions, Lawrence returns to the Dial label he founded with Carsten Jost for Films & Windows, the Hamburg producer's sixth studio album. Given how much finely sculpted deep house terrain Peter M. Kersten has covered on his previous five album it's not surprising to hear that Films & Windows is driven by a central concept. Ten tracks deep, Kersten's production was apparently motivated and "inspired by an endless number of screened movies and real-life films". It's open to interpretation how much this actually manifests itself in the end results, though Lawrence fans will delight in the rich melodic warmth apparent in tracks such as "In Patagonia" whilst "Lucifer" is a certified jam.

Above The Sky (version)
Review: Lawrence is no stranger to Japanese label Mule Electronic, having been releasing with them since 2007, and Above The Sky follows his exquisite Until The Goodbye album released in 2009. The underpinning trait of "Teenage Barb" is the delicate piano chord movements that sit on top of monotone synth notes and shadowed claps. Whispy and delightful, they contrast magically against the deep bass. "Organ Track" has a more familiar deep house vibe to it as tribal drums march their way from the intro and allow the immense organ melody to dance along the rest of the piece. Flip over and Lawrence offers "Above The Sky" in two versions for the B Side. The original adaptation flies with manipulated shakers, a chugging bass and long, drawn out pads, while the second offers a twinkling beatless close to another wonderfully crafted EP from the German producer.

Review: 3rd single from the album "The Night Will Last Forever" featuring mixes by Kompakt ace Superpitcher and Minus' Troy Pierce. Superpitcher's mix of "Along The Wire" is a stunning New Order-flavoured groover with a gorgeous floating melody and thick bassline chord shifts. Pierce contributes a pair of mixes, first a housey shuffle track followed by a dubbier, techier minimal rinse-out.

Roman Flugel - "In Your Wardrobe" (8:39)
Dawn Mok - "Like Thoughts Or Moments We'll Fall" (2:35)
Pawel - "All Nearness Pauses" (2:44)
Review: Dial celebrated its 15th anniversary in requisite fashion this year with the All compilation, a CD pulling in productions from label regulars as well as hinting at the shape of their future with some new faces. The latest All 12" sampler is largely formed of those you'd readily associate with Dial. Lawrence turns in "Chez Dupont" another example of his talented of mysterious and ethereal grooves. Efdemin proves yet again why he is the auteur of beautifully crafted and soulful techno on "No Exit". "In Your Wardrobe" by Roman Flugel is a welcome edition no doubt as his legendary sound aesthetic is totally in harmony with the label. Finally the last two artists highlight the far reaching diversity of the label yet keep its aesthetic aligned, with the R&B flavour of the mysterious Dawn Mok and label mainstay Pawel's brooding lo-fi ballad "All Nearness Pauses".

Lawrence - "Divided" (Kassem Mosse remix)
Hierogltphic Being - "Got No Place To Go"
Gadi Mizrahi - "She Only Looks At You"
Kate Simko - "Zhivago"
Review: Ghostly offshoot Spectral deliver the final vinyl off cuts from the excellent Ryan Elliot curated Document compilation. Mikrodisko's Kassem Mosse adds a satisfying metallic crunch and bounce to Lawrence's atmospheric "Divided", embellishing the track with a real dynamism. Hieroglyphic Being aka Members Only boss Jamal Moss occupies the space closer to Side A's run out groove with "Got No Place To Go". The hazy melodic techno abstractions that fold cannot help but encompass your senses with unease. Wolf & Lamb's Gadi Mizrahi flies solo once again on the undulating cosmiche bump of "She Only Looks At You" which lays gentle arpeggiated organ flourishes and vocal abstractions deep beneath intricate drum programming. Kate Simko rounds off the release with the dubby tech house bounce of "Zhivago" which sees an intermittent synth swell mutate several times over the staid drums.

Unity Kolabo Part 6 & 7: 10 Year Anniversary Edition

Lawrence - "Sapphire"
Arcarsenal - "Suzgun Beats"
Son Of Sound - "Staircase Love"
Diego Gamez - "Idealness"
Alexkid & Hector - "Ontra Bravo"
DJ Jus-Ed - "Whale Dance"
Review: In order to celebrate arriving at their tenth year, Jus Ed's Underground Quality label picks up on Unity Kolabo, a vinyl series that has laid dormant for a while, and there is a suitably high profile cast of contributing talent. The presence of DJ Koze and Lawrence is likely to stop many a deep house appreciator in their tracks, and contributions from this European pair are complemented by some under the radar talent. Tape Club's Jo Nathan sets the tone with the crisp, warbling deepness of "That Other Train", and it's nice to see Koze turn in one of his most joyous productions in recent memory in the shape of "NYC Dub". The subsequent six cuts all retain that Underground Quality and demonstrate Unity Kolabo Part 6 & 7 to be a fine way to celebrate 10 years. PS do check the mind bending Son Of Sound contribution - our personal favourite!

Martin Eyerer & Benno Blome - "Piano Roll" (Audiofly Twinkle edit) (8:55)
Review: Cacao is a Central American rooted label now based in Berlin "with a knack for refreshing exotic dopeness of house and techno flavors", they claim. Starting off their new Timeless EP compilation is Rodriguez Jr's "Kids Of Hula" which is reminiscent of Guy Gerber or Shlomi Aber's brand of slinky tech house. It's then over to to Berlin legend Tigerskin aka Dub Taylor who serves up the deep tribal tech house of "Hidden From The Mind". On the flip, enfant terrible Seth Troxler teams up with Dial head honcho Lawrence for the tunnelling hi-tech soul of "Miles In Aphrika" (YouANDme edit) which has a kind of Innervisions vibe about it. Finally, German gun for hire Martin Eyerer teams up with Sender Berlin's Benno Blome on the emotive and bittersweet closer "Piano Roll" (Audiofly Twinkle edit) with some truly life affirming Rhodes keys throughout: check it!

Tilman Tausendfreund - "A Man Under The Influence" (5:10)

Christopher Rau - "RG En El Casa" (5:33)
Review: This year, Smallville Records is celebrating a decade in the game with the Smallville Ways compilation. This second, sampler 12" boasts a quartet of cuts from that set. The prolific Stephan "STL" Laubner kicks things off, going deep into dub techno/deep house fusion territory with the ricocheting chords, delay-laden hits and suitably bass-heavy groove of "Leaving Peaceful". Tilman Tausenfruend's "A Man Under The Influence" is a woozy, fluid delight - think clicking percussion, watery chords and smooth bass - while Lawrence's "Dawn 808" perfectly captures the sapped energy and hazy sunlight of an early morning session of outdoor dancing. Best of all, though, is Christopher Rau's "RG En El Casa", where skittish, soft touch beats provide the perfect foil for the producer's melancholic chords and yearning melodies.

Review: You can always count on Styrax to dig deep for their reissue series, and that doesn't always mean going back into the past too far as this release ably demonstrates. Instead a few finely selected gems that sit well together make up the sixth installment of the Styrax Special series, kicking off with the Soul Capsule-powered delights of "Check Your Buddah" by Sunpeople. Dial main man Lawrence follows up with the haunting lilt of "Lost Friday", while Patrice Scott's heart-melting "Do You Feel Me" from his first EP on Sistrum makes a welcome appearance. Then the string-laden delights of Even Tuell's "Pointing Sydney" round the EP off in fine style.
