The album itself is incredible, with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals, while the cast list - which includes original electrofunk outfit Unlimited Touch, Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico - is similarly impressive. The headline attraction is the epic extended mix of the Rod Temperton penned jazz-funk/disco classic 'The Star of a Story', which not only boasts fine lead vocals from Lisa Fischer and shuffling samba-house beats, but also strings (arranged by Leroy Burgess) performed Kelley Polar and his colleagues in the Apple Hill quartet. Here he is back on regular label Nervous with various different versions of his tunes 'Joy Universal' and 'Igobolo.' Review: Tucked away on Louie Vega's fantastic - and vast - Expansions in the NYC album were a handful of tributes to disco legends Patrick Adams and Larry Levan. This double-pack brings those tributes to the floor. Vega opens with his Elements of Live band cover of Sine's Patrick Adams-produced 1978 B-side 'Chimi', turning the four-minute cut into a driving-but-bouncy, near 14-minute disco epic rich in restless bass, attractive vibraphone solos and spacey synths. On 'Change Your Mind', which is presented in both full vocal and instrumental forms, Vega recruits the voice of the Peech Boys, Bernard Fowler, and turns down a sparse, heavily electronic workout reminiscent of Larry Levan's early '80s mixes. It's genuinely great, as is the DJ Spinna-sporting, hybrid disco/organic house cover of Adams' classic 'Atmosphere Strut'. In a word: essential!

Review: Louie Vega's forthcoming "Expansions In The NYC" album was apparently created in part as a tribute to the roots of house music as he sees them. You'll find plenty of nods to classic styles of old in this second sampler EP. The A-side boasts two thrill-a-minute, sweat-soaked "Nico Funki" dubs of "How He Works" - muscular and forthright affairs rich in squelchy proto-house bass, righteous vocal samples and a nagging, almost familiar piano riff. The fun continues on side B via the breezy brilliance of "Can't Slow Down" - a fine slab of organic, disco-tinged house in Vega's now familiar style - and the superb "Vince Montana Tribute", a cut in the style of the vibraphone player and Salsoul arranger complete with Candido style disco drums.

"I Deserve To Breathe" features the powerful soul vocals of Daneva, and the tune is a classic MAW bomb that could easily be enjoyed from everyone. Review: "Heaven Knows" was first featured on Louie Vega's expansive triple album of collaborations, Louie Vega Starring... XXVIII. Here, it gets the remix treatment. On the A-side, the Masters at Work man joins forces with Hajime Yoshizawa to deliver a largely instrumental, Afrobeat inspired take full of layered hand-held percussion, undulating grooves, and the latter producer's killer organ solos. On the flip, Blaze's Josh Milan provides a honeyed, effortlessly soulful interpretation that places Anane Vega's delicious vocals at the heart of proceedings. While it lacks a little of the hustling energy of the A-side, it will no doubt go down a treat at clubs that like it soulful.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an all-star re-recording of Universal Robot Band's boogie classic "Barely Breaking Even" that brings together Masters At Work man Louie Vega, original vocalist and arranger Leroy Burgess, iconic disco producer Patrick Adams and an impressive backing band of hired musicians including Michael Kelley (better known in electronic music circles as Metro Area collaborator Kelley Polar). While there are plenty of audible nods towards the early '80s original - extensive use of cowbells, that oh-so familiar synth sound - the re-recording is altogether warmer, fuller and a more contemporary sounding affair rich in sweeping orchestration and tactile synth bass. Both the edited vocal and instrumental versions are superb.

Its title was also the inspiration for the name of BBE Records, so it seems fitting that the label's 500th release is an all-star re-recording that brings together NYC house hero Louie Vega and original creators Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams. Vega delivers vocal and instrumental versions of two distinctive passes: a slick, smooth, soulful and string-laden "Boogie Mix" rich in warm electronics and subtle nods towards the early '80s original, and a rolling "NYC House Remix" full of twinkling Fender Rhodes solos and atmospheric chords. As you'd expect, Burgess' re-recorded vocal is superb.

Review: It would be fair to say that post-disco outfit Unlimited Touch's 1980 single "I Hear Music In the Streets" is one of the greatest boogie/electrofunk records of all time. Louie Vega clearly agrees, because late last year he decided to gather together the remaining members of Unlimited Touch and record a fresh 2020 version. The A-side "Touch Mix" is the bomb. It features a more organic-sounding disco-boogie groove than the 1980 original, with delicious guitars, bass and electric piano/organ underpinning seriously good group vocals from the sometime Prelude-signed outfit. Over on the flip, Vega serves up an electric piano solo-laden dub mix, as well as a "Classic Boogie" take that naturally sounds very similar to the band's much-loved original version.

Review: Anyone with even the smallest interest in disco and boogie will have heard Unlimited Touch's 1980 classic 'I Hear Music In The Streets'. It's a stone-cold killer that should be approached with caution. Louie Vega, of course, is respectful, and these versions are not remixes but rather re-makes, with the Masters at Work man being joined in the studio by all manner of guest musicians and vocalists - including original members of Unlimited Touch. The standout version is the near 11-minute A-side 'Touch Mix', an all-live post-disco version rich in classic disco bass, guitars, electric piano keys and spacey chords. The short-ish 'NYC Expansions Dub' cans the vocals and emphasises the various instrument solos, while the 'LV Classic Boogie Mix' is an almost note-for-note remake of the 1980 original.

Review: Absolutely sublime slice of deep afro jazz house by master mix combinations Louie Vega & Blaze. Oringally written by Josh and Kevin, this version features Louie at the controls and Vega labelmates Selan and Lousito Quintero on keyboards and percussion respectively. The Roots mix on the A side twists around a deep thudding kick and silky smooth decending guitar & Rhodes riffs. On the flip, Nico's dub drops the kick in favor of a more spacious feel, with the low end taken up by a stand up bass line.

Review: Having long since made enough money to retire, Louie Vega has spent the last few years developing his Elements of Life project - a kind of all-star band that blends global rhythms with elements of soul, disco, jazz and, of course, house. While early releases on his own Vega Records imprint were a touch ham-fisted and noodlesome, this second full-length oozes laidback spirituality - like the Masters at Work Nu Yorican Soul project taken to its logical conclusion. Review: One of the musical highlights from Louie Vega's NYC Disco album, "Rebel Nation" is a collaboration between grammy award winner Louie Vega, legendary multi-platinum producer Patrick Adams, and Nulu Records president, international DJ and artist Anane. Patrick initially had the idea for the song after seeing a recent Star Wars movie. In Louie's own words, "I call Anane a chameleon, because she transcends so many different sounds with her voice. She gave the track just the right feeling vocally. It's a very punk-rock approach; the kids speaking out, all kinds of people making the statement, Get Up! Stand Up! Let's Rise! Rebel Nation."

Review: Given the length of his career, it's rather surprising to find that Starring XXVIII is the New York house veteran's debut solo album. As the title suggests, it's an all-star affair, with each of the 28 tracks - stretched across two discs - featuring a guest vocalist or collaborator. After fusing P-funk and house with the help of Funkadelic, the Masters At Work man rolls through organic, Latin-tinged deep house, Nuyorican Soul style goodness (with a little help from former Soul II Soul singer Caron Wheeler), intergalactic dancefloor soul (alongside Viktor Duplaix), boogie-house brilliance (a tasty version of Leroy Burgess and Convexion's "Let's Do It"), jazz-funk, and luscious downtempo grooves ("Stop On By").

The first part of the 2 x double gatefold package features eight unmixed tracks. It certainly offers great value. Musically, it's pretty on-point too, flitting between all manner of heavy afro-tech grooves, percussive deep house, string-drenched soulful flavas, snappy Latino beats and Vega's own soft-focus take on Latin and Afro house. Mr V's productions and DJ sets are known for taking the listener back to the 'dance music golden age', a pioneer of the classic house sound. The final producer working on the track is Master At Work, Louie Vega. The release includes the original track along with three different remixes from Vega.
The release opens with the Louie Vega remix, the deep vocal loop ' I wanna take you there' gives the track a dark and seductive tone with the drum beat intensifying throughout the track. Vega's 'Jungle Beats' mix of the track completely gets rid of the vocal, the drums and sound effects become more prominent in its place. The Louie Vega Dance Ritual Mix is more up-tempo than his other two mixes of the track, with more of a club orientated sound.
The original track has a sound more in the style of sanXero, who has remixed commercial tracks to give them a house sound. The rolling baseline and big drops make this a track designed for the dancefloor.

Review: Louie Vega's Expansions In The NYC album remains a classic of the house master's vast ouvre. It was an all-star affair from the Masters at Work icon which same him pay homage to New York disco, boogie and house with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals from a superb cast which includes Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico. Two of the cuts from it now make their way onto this 12" on Nervous in the form of the soulful delights of the sooth a-side 'Another Day In My Life' and the jazzy, piano laced dancer that is 'Deep Burnt' (feat Axel Tosca) on the B-side. Life affirming stuff.

Review: We're prepared to argue with anyone on this, but Universal Robot Band's "Barely Breaking Even" is one of the best boogie-era disco records ever made. Its title was also the inspiration for the name of BBE Records, so it seems fitting that the label's 500th release is an all-star re-recording that brings together NYC house hero Louie Vega and original creators Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams. Vega delivers vocal and instrumental versions of two distinctive passes: a slick, smooth, soulful and string-laden "Boogie Mix" rich in warm electronics and subtle nods towards the early '80s original, and a rolling "NYC House Remix" full of twinkling Fender Rhodes solos and atmospheric chords. As you'd expect, Burgess' re-recorded vocal is superb.

Review: Earlier this month Louie Vega reissued his 2006 full-length collaboration with Luisito Quintero, a veteran percussionist who has long been part of New York's vibrant Latin fusion scene. Here he delivers 'Part Two' of the same project, a shorter but no less essential collection of percussion-rich Latin dance music gems. Opener 'Acid' is a high-quality traditional salsa gem, while 'Four Beat Mambo' does exactly what it says on the tin, with a killer double bassline rising and falling beneath Quintero's killer percussion. 'Son Montuno' adds a little deep jazz-funk flavour to the percussionist's infectious rhythms, while 'EOL Intro (Clap Your Hands)' is an up-tempo fusion of deep house and salsa that has long been a staple in the sets of Vega's Elements of Life band.

Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. A TMBLV mix is more pumping, Honey Dijon cuts loose on elastic bass and rugged rhythms and Dom Dolla offers a more energetic and main room version.

Review: Louie Vega presents the third instalment of the Vega Records unreleased series with another quintuple LP of hard-hitting unreleased house bangers that span the breadth and width of everything the genre has to offer. Mr X's 'The Curse' is an industrial tribal house floor filler with jazz sections, 'World Collisions' is in a similar vein with a deeper more meditative thudding bass. Disc 2 sidesteps into a jazzy Latin lane with Tony Touch's sax-fueled 'Apaga La Luz' and 'Baza SOS Fever'. Disc 3 is a temple for disco-house, with two gospel-inspired funk-filled tracks from Honeysweet - 'Last Night Changed It All' is a particular favourite. If we are talking highlights, Josh Millan hits it out the park on "Let us Shine" with Elements Of Life; Side B with a jazz house instrumental that's the perfect comedown. Disc 5 sees a monumentous 11-minute funky jazz cut from Honeysweet with 'Being Free', paired with a soulful closer instrumental from Two Soul Fusion. House collectors would be crazy to pass this release up.
