AWOL - "54 973379, -1 614705" (Markus Suckut remix) (7:07)

Luke Hess - "TDY" (Aubrey remix) (6:50)
Deep'a & Biri - "Pilgrim" (Tripeo Journey mix) (5:48)
Review: Jaunt continue their 10 year celebrations with another strong cast of remixers taking their vision of techno even further out from the point of origin. Markus Suckut is up first, remixing AWOL with a blissful, almost Balearic leaning version that places piano chords front and centre. BNJMN takes on Artefakt's "Wanderings", digging it into the undergrowth for a gritty but submerged beatdown. Aubrey brings a little of his wildstyle charm to Luke Hess' "TDY", all bouncing drums, raining acid and delightfully wonky chords. Then Tripeo rounds things off with a boisterous take on Deep'a & Biri's "Pilgrim", using clattering drums and evocative atmospherics to create an epic trip.

E Grand Blvd (6:30)
E Grand Blvd (Fireground remix) (5:13)
Review: Detroit's Luke Hess is a dub and techno don who keeps on finding fresh new musical territory to explore each time he steps out. Here he lands on the respected European outlet Dolly with a pair of brand new and captivating cuts that come with a couple of solid remixes. 'Woodward Ave' is pure dub techno bliss with carefully evolving synths over driving drums and fluttering percussion with some added synth fizz for extra texture. 'E Grand Blvd' is a lush wedge of deep techno soul which becomes a more emotionally and physically intense vibe with the Fireground remix while the Vil remix of 'Woodward Ave' is thumping and high speed dub techno bliss.

Fortress (5:47)

Review: Luke Hess' latest EP 'Psalm' is a captivating journey into the deeper and more chord-heavy realms of dub techno, bigging up the artist's preference for evoking root-noted trance states. Tracks like 'Fortress' and 'Refuge' may on the surface sound functional, but further listens invite comparisons to living beings, with deft filterpassings and cutoff automation evoking the heavy breathing of a biotech beast.

Breakers (7:16)
Depths (6:17)
Submissions (5:37)
Review: Defining what is, and isn't, "deep" has long been a popular argument amongst house and techno heads, with plenty of records that describe themselves as such more often than not featuring only a veneer of deepness. Luke Hess's latest EP, Into The Deep, is not one of those records. Atmospheric, unearthly and wonderfully immersive, it sees Hess move between the deep techno hypnotism of opener 'Breakers' - think Motor City techno meets classic sci-fi house and you're close - the drifting, dubbed-out chords and locked-in rhythms of 'Depths', and the gorgeously picturesque deep electro shimmer of 'Submissions'. If you love club cuts that tend towards the spacey and emotive, Into The Deep ticks that box and then some.

Emerald (6:28)
Lumen (6:50)
Myriads (6:46)
Review: There are few surprises on Luke Hess's latest vinyl outing on Echochord's colour series, just a trio of fluttering, tried-and-tested techno workouts. Opener "Emerald" boasts a typically trippy and hypnotic groove, but also some heart-aching chord progressions and suitably melancholic melody lines. The late night hypnotism is also present on the slightly more boisterous "Lumen", in which the producer fires darting synthesizer lines and cyclical melody loops at a locked-in groove. In a possible bid to impress those who like their techno funkier and more forthright, he reaches for the foreboding acid lines and pounding kick-drums on cymbal-heavy closer "Myriads".

Pillars Of Creation (7:16)
Gravitation Effects (6:36)
Crate Digging On Planet Omnom (1:16)
Review: In recent years, Luke Hess has done more than most to keep the original futurist ethos of Detroit techno alive. Here he returns to Echochord Colour with an EP that neatly joins the dots between the spacey hypnotism most readily associated with the Motor City, the stretched-out, late night loops of Twilo-era Danny Tenaglia productions, and the unwavering chug of European deep house. This is particular evident on opener "Pillars of Creation", which expertly works an attractive, locked-in groove. He does a bit more stargazing on the more expansive, undeniably picturesque "Gravitation Effects", whilst still putting adequate emphasis on the track's rolling groove. There's a useful DJ tool included in the shape of "Crate Digging On Planet Omnom", a spoken word interlude laden with trippy effects and atmospheric field recordings.

Mission. 106 (6:57)
Review: Boom! Detroit's prodigal son Luke Hess returns on his own label with three cuts containing his signature brand of grainy, hissing analogue house and techno. As the name gives away, "Dimension D" is an interstellar house tune with a 90's sci-fi kinda feel to its synths, a progressive groove with a deep and subby bassline dominating its epicentre. There's also a VOX Reshape for all your DJ needs, and on over on the flipside, "Mission. 106" gives us another fine slice of molecular space funk, all phat, all hardware-based and straight out of the machines with minimal or no processing. Essential house goodness from the underground to you.

Deep House

Unity
Review: Luke Hess keeps it fresh on his own Deeplabs, turning out this excellent solo drop soon after collaborating with FXHE boss Omar S on a 12" for the label, and both tracks here continue Hess's penchant for forays into sci-fi tinged Motor City hypnotism. He kicks things off with "Become", a warm, melodic and decidedly positive deep house production shot through with his usual fluid synths and classic Detroit influences. "Unity", on the other hand, is straight-up Detroit techno - all undulating synthesizers, far-sighted stargazing chords and loopy, heads-down percussion. It's good and will no doubt become a firm favourite with DJs who like their techno smooth and melodic, though it lacks the glassy-eyed appeal of the sun-kissed A-side.

Paskho (version 1)
Paskho (version 2)
Review: Hess unites Detroit and Berlin on this latest missive for Danish label Echocord. "Pashko (Version 1)" is based on heavy beats and a menacing bass that rumbles along to reveal thundering claps. However, it's the chords that prove compelling, welling up and covering the arrangement in a layer of gloom. On the second version, steely drums and bleepy tones provide the basis for a throbbing basslne and Hess' trademark chords. This time however, they have changed in tone from moody to dreamy, with the US producer moving closer to the legacy of his hometown of Detroit. Sometimes, it's impossible to escape where you're from.

Review: Despite being born and raised in Detroit, Luke Hess is rarely mentioned in the same breath as his Motor City peers. Then again, his brand and dub-infused techno doesn't fit neatly into the futurist narrative. This latest full-length flips the script slightly. While it has plenty of dub-flecked moments (see "Overcome" and "Humility"), there's a greater reliance on melody over mood. While this could be a reflection of the involvement of collaborator Omar-S, it's more likely an indication of Hess's development as a producer. Moving from hypnotic deep house to robust techno via beatless interludes, Keep On is Hess's most accessible set to date.

Most High (6:10)
Twelve Gates (6:06)
Dwelling Place (7:23)
Review: Detroit techno veteran Luke Hess is back on his DeepLabs imprint, and on this one he teams up with brother Jeff who makes another rare appearance since his great debut on FXHE back in 2012. There's some sublime dub techno on offer here (as you'd well expect from the pair), and you will immediately feel lost in the groove of slinky and hypnotic A side cut 'Most High' as it glides elegantly through layers of vintage delay and glacial reverbs. The following cut 'Twelve Gates' is a stomping DJ tool that takes it cues from the timeless aesthetic of Axis/Purposemaker releases. The flipside belongs to the majestic deep techno epic 'Dwelling Place', the perfect soundtrack for a winter night drive along Lake Michigan. This is the 10th anniversary release on Hess's label, featuring full sleeve artwork by Haqq.

Review: Finale Sessions continues to fly the flag for the freshest variations on deep techno with a distinct Detroit flavour, and now the label is celebrating five years of operations with a split release that calls upon some label regulars to turn out the goods. Luke Hess is up first with the dynamic whipcrack dub techno pulse of "Deliverer", while Patrice Scott continues his fine run of form with the meditative "Future Funk". Basic Soul Unit meanwhile strikes the balance between experimentation and immersion with the sharp-angled yet soothing "Torn Satin", and then label boss Michael Zucker drops a punchy but poignant offering in the shape of "YHWH".

Detroit Electronic Quarterly Magazine Volume 17 & 18 EP Part 2

A7MC - "The Inexplicables" (4:18)

Eddie Fowlkes - "AK1" (4:51)
Luke Hess & Jeff Hess - "The Dance Room" (4:47)
ADMN - "Evening Acid" (5:35)
Review: Detroit Electronic Quarterly serves up the latest volume of tracks in their ongoing series and it is another crucial one that starts with a particularly potent spoken word. Nandi's 'Detroit Tells Its Techno Story' speaks about how the genre is often referenced by huge stars of the music world but never itself gets much credit. After that A7MC drops a nice raw hip hop beat and Shawscape Renegade offers some slippery analogue electro to make your ass wiggle. The ever underrated Eddie Fowlkes also contributes a vibe-y and dynamic deep house cut amongst other great tunes from Luke & Jeff Hess and ADMN which all show the varied and vital nature of the Motor City's output.

Jefferson Reserve (6:47)
Calm Of Night (7:31)
Review: Considering the spacey title, artwork and long-standing Detroit credentials of both Luke Hess and Omar-S collaborator Ob Ignitt, you'd expect these two tracks to be on the intergalactic side. Happily, they are. The duo kicks things off with "Jefferson Reserve", a tactile, floor-friendly chunk of energetic deep house blessed with classic electrofunk bass, deep space pads, and the kind of glistening, far-out synthesizer melodies you'd expect to hear the Cantina Band play in one of the Star Wars movies. They move further towards techno territory on flipside "Calm of Night", where warring lasers fizz between the speakers whilst progressive house-influenced chords and rhythms propel the track forwards at the speed of light.

Onmutu Mechanicks - "Calyx"
Brendon Moeller - "Farmhouse"
Luke Hess - "Kratos"
Resoe - "Tanzfieber"
Review: The key to the Echocord's longevity has been to focus on the deeper, dubbier side of techno, without worrying too much about what all around them are doing. Put simply, Echocord - now celebrating its 10th year - was releasing textured techno for the head and the floor before and after it was trendy to do so. This second sampler 12" showcasing the wares of Kenneth Christiansen's label ahead of a full 'best of' compilation release sees Onmutu Mechanicks, Brendon Moeller, Luke Hess and Resoe all making an appearance. Mechanicks's contribution turns the mood slightly more menacing as "Calyx" marches to the beat of metallic drums and teems with foreboding chords. This being Echocord however, reflective and evocative sensibilities are never too far away, and Luke Hess's "Kratos", although based on clipped drums, boasts breathy, shimmering melodies. Highly recommended.

Patrice Scott - "Journey To The Unknown"
Keith Worthy - "Cyclops"
Luke Hess - "Tolox"
Kai Alce - "Rockin K-Tel"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: For those turned on by the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired sounds of Detroit deep house and techno, this EP from Michael Zucker's Finale Underground imprint (an offshoot of his Finale Sessions label) should be an essential purchase. With the likes of Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy and Luke Hess involved, you'd expect the quality threshold to be high. It is, of course, resulting in a quartet of killer tracks. Hess' hypnotic techno jam "Tolox" is a definite highlight, though it pales in comparison to the analogue futurism of Keith Worthy's brilliant "Cyclops". Best of all, though, is Scott's "Journey Into The Unknown", which bobs, weaves, bubbles and spits to the rush-inducing deep house sound of undulating synthesizer melodies and classic, Transmat-style Motor City rhythms.

Review: The Jaunt Records 10 years series shores up with the Land installment featuring another four adventurous souls that have the spirit of deepest techno in their bones. Stojche lets lush Motor City synths lead the way on the energetic "The Exchange" before AWOL gets into an intricate broken beat groove on the stunning "54.973379, -1.614705". Luke Hess brings some unabashed acid gurgles to the front of the mix on "TDY" and then Deep'a & Biri plot a course for dubby waters with the growling tones of "Pilgrim".
