Curved (4:04)
Curved (Bambounou Hyper Street remix) (4:09)
Review: Bristol bestie badmen Batu and Lurka clash up once again for another Fringe excursion. One track, one remix, "Curved" gets straight to the point with its loosely broken house beats, grumbling bass bubbles and drunken synth scribbles. If you recall the dubby delights of Craig Richards & Lee Burridge's Tyrant project years ago, you're in the right area. Need things a little spicier? Flip for Bambounou's up-tempo twist where the drums are fully broken, the tension is higher and there's a trippy-assed breakdown that will bend your dancefloor's minds. Limited to 300, this won't hang around.

Sick Flips (7:10)
Space (4:41)
Review: Make Your Own Meaning continues to convey its unique techno message with a new statement of intent from label head Lurka. The artist has been busy of late and continues to be on a roll with another fascinating four tracker that genuinely serves up some original sounds and rhythms. 'Trip' gets things underway with organic percussive patterns stacked up over drilling bass to make for a prickly groove. 'Airlock' is similar but darker and heavier and 'Sick Flips' keeps the nimble feel going with dancing perc, rigid synths and scratchy sound effects all coalescing over broken drum patterns. Last of all is another dense, busy and multi-layered melange of tiny percussive sounds, synths and clipped rhythms that will make any floor move.

Wire (4:09)
Molten Drum (2:47)
Machine (5:48)
Zone (Packet) (3:23)
Review: Lurka ended the year on a high with a kick-ass new EP on his own new label Make Your Own Meaning. He is now set to start 2023 in an equally strong fashion with four more futuristic bass fusions. 'Wire' is a minimal stepper with bursts of bass and flitting percussive lines. 'Molten Drum' is another twitchy mix of malfunctioning computer sounds, refracted vocals and fizzing synths that keep you on edge then 'Machine' picks ups the pace with jumpy rhythms and militant snare work. 'Zone (Packet)' rounds out with a double-speed workout and juke patterns that head out on a cosmic journey.

Powers (7:02)
Re Speak (5:04)
String (4:50)
Mystick Crystal (5:40)
Review: If your new EP has already been getting dropped by top dogs like Upsammy, Batu, Call Super, Ben Ufo and Bruce, you know it's a winner. And that's exactly what Lurka's first release on his brand new Make Your On Meaning label is - four tracks of red hot and brilliantly weird minimal. 'Powers' is razor-sharp hi-hats cutting up a scintillatingly smooth and militant tech house groove. 'Re Speak' has jumbled percussion and more wonky rhythms while 'String' layers up toms, tin pot hits, clattering sound effects and an undulating liquid baseline into something super seductive. The closer 'Mystick Crystal' is the busiest of the lot with its densely layered sound fx and samples underpinned by minimal funk.

Point Noise Behaviours (5:03)
Ssppeedd (4:10)
Minds Eye Tript (5:32)
Rhythm Hi-Tek (5:49)
Review: High grade club business from the lurking one right here. After a series of treats on his own Fringe White imprint, Lurka jumps aboard the good ship Timedance, run by his long-time musical ally Batu, for his first proper solo EP. As you'd expect, the results are joyously chaotic and unpredictable. "Point Noise Behaviours" is a stampy warped rave monster who has done 10 rounds with Tyson Fury but still just about manages to stand up and throw gunfinger. "Ssppeedd" takes more of a techno twist as it rambles at pace towards a very trippy breakdown before the hypnotic tripletty twists of "Minds Eye Tript" calm us into a more lucid state. Finally "Rhythm Hi-Tek" seals the deal. A fractured, tense slab of electro so electric it sizzles with pent up energy, Lurka didn't name the EP after it for nothing.

Beater (5:35)
Density (4:53)
Review: Having previously delivered two out of the three releases on Timedance himself, boss man Batu has decided to rope in old pal Lurka for 12" number four. The Bristol-based bass head predictably hits the spot. "Beater" is as rhythmically interesting and sparsely produced as previous outings, with a handful of elements - drum machine hits, rubbery bass and occasional whispers of melody - being worked hard throughout. The result is a typically raw and moody dancefloor jacker. Flipside "Density" is even heavier and arguably more impressive, with Lurka cleverly layering bleeping melody lines and Motor City chords over a loose-limbed rhythm and booming sub-bass line.

Ritual Dingers

Ritual Dingers (5:38)
Choke (4:18)
Review: Here, Bristol-based Lurka makes his second appearance on hometown imprint Hotline Recordings. In keeping with much of the label's output, the two tracks that make up Ritual Dingers are hard to place, with Lurka combining elements and influences from a variety of genres to create unique, percussive, bass-heavy blends. The title track sets the tone, building an atmospheric, surprisingly melancholic cut around a brilliantly programmed groove that seems to simultaneously doff a cap to jazz, broken beat, techno and post-dubstep beats. In contrast, flipside "Choke" is a pleasingly heavy affair, built around surging sub-bass, industrial electronics and the kind of booming riddim that should ignite any bass-obsessed dance.

Partials (6:08)
Mach (5:19)
Review: Lurka realigns with the Black Acre label for another journey into "sonic bat country" on the heavy hitting Partials 12". Responsible for one of favourite Hotline releases, Lurka has previously been spotted lending some subby heft to the likes of Box Clever and Black Box but seems to have struck a real partnership with Black Acre. Leading with "Partials", Lurka's production intricacies are on full display here with twisting, snake-like melodies and crunched up and broken metallic rhythms deployed with extra time delay that is likely to confuse the dance nicely. Complementing this, "Mach" comes off as a more rugged number, though the awkward drums are still very much a prominent element.

Br Greaze
Review: After launching in dancehall style with Kahn & Neek's Backchat last year, Bristol-based Hotline Recordings move to dubstep on this second release containing two bonafide bangers from Lurka. Known for his collaborations with Commodo and searing solo productions for the likes of Black Box and Box Clever, Lurka's sound shares elements of Coki's harsh mechanical wobble and Mala's propulsive rhythms, however his Hotline single is something quite different. "Full Clip" has all the sonic hallmarks of his previous productions, but ratchets the pace up to a ridiculous 175BPM halfstep and smears his basslines in what sounds like a vocoder; "BR Greaze" is similarly paced but combines his shackling rhythms with "Dominator"-inspired hoover synths. Great stuff and impeccable sleeve design once again.

Track 1 (5:30)
Track 2 (5:03)
Track 3 (5:49)
Review: Bristol bassheads Lurka and Batu have long been friends, so its little surprise to see them join forces for a collaborative effort on the former's freshly minted Fringe White label. The untitled track lurking (sorry) on the A-side is an analogue affair built around heavy sub bass, metallic rhythms and flashes of vintage Motor City electronics, as if the duo has reinvented Yorkshire bleep for the broken techno generation. Flip for a metronomic 4/4 slammer with subtle UK funky influences (particularly in the mutilated, Serato's-gone-mental melodies), and a sparser, more electro influenced cut that bounces, bobs and weaves impressively.
